4. No Stone Unturned - Paul Stone - Article #123
-------------------------------------
Message by Paul Stone (US)
I was sorry to hear that Coral Reveen had died last week.
She was an integral and hugely important part of the success
of Peter Reveen, and assisted him not only in his record
breaking hypnosis shows in Canada but also as the leading
lady in his spectacular illusion shows.
Mention of Peter, who was a very close friend, and someone
that I greatly admired both as a performer and as a kind
and generous human being, reminds me of the weekly lunches
we used to have, which we nicknamed the Peter Reveen lunches,
with Peter, Lance Burton, Bill Smith, Norm & Lupe Nielsen,
and Fielding West, and a few other select magicians.
They were always great fun, and after Peter sadly passed,
they were replaced by the Lance Burton lunches, which in
turn, after Lance moved away from Vegas back to Kentucky
to become a Gentleman Farmer, were re christened the Fielding
West lunches!
We had one such lunch this week with Fielding, Bill Smith,
Lupe Nielsen, Richard Faverty, Charlie & Sherry Frye,
and Jason Byrne, at the same Thai restaurant we've regularly
frequented.
I was driving today from Las Vegas to Phoenix and before
going over the Hoover Dam, I passed by Lance's old residence,
the 'castle on the hill' where I was fortunate to enjoy
several dinners and get together with him, and amongst others,
Johnny & Pam Thompson, another couple that are greatly
missed.
On the first evening reception at the recent Magic Live
Convention, I was walking round the impressive Dealers Room
when I was approached by a masked magician, not THE masked
magician. At first, I didn't recognise him, but soon realised
that it was another old friend, Mike Close.
Mike was in town to work on another series of Penn &
Teller's 'Fool Us' TV Show. It was good to see him, and
we arranged to meet up for breakfast one day during the
week.
The following day I received a message from Mike asking
to postpone our breakfast as he had caught a bug. It turned
out that it was in fact more than just a bug, and before
we knew it, Mike was in the UMC Hospital, in a very poorly
condition.
I'm glad to report that after a week's treatment, during
which he still somehow managed to help several magicians
on the show, Mike did make it back to complete the final
week's filming.
I've always felt that Mike was underrated. He is a fabulous
keyboard player, an excellent Close-up magician, and a very
knowledgeable and well respected writer. He also edited
the MUM magazine for a number of years, and did an outstanding
job (I know, because I wrote a regular article titled 'Backstage'
for his final two years in that position).
And Mike is the perfect Magic Consultant for 'Fool Us',
having previously worked with Johnny Thompson on a Penn
& Teller underwater TV Special.
Mike's lovely wife Lisa is a pretty amazing lady too! She
worked with Mike on the layout and production of the MUM
magazine, and not too many people know that she has one
of the best Svengali Deck pitches on the planet!
I also vividly remember when she went to Guatamala to try
to adopt a baby, and was there many months before finally
she and Mike got the green light to adopt Ava who was then
only a few months old.
That was obviously quite a life changer for Mike too, and
to both their credits, Ava has blossomed into an incredibly
talented and attractive teenager.
It's a shame we don't get to see much of them, as they moved
to Canada quite a few years ago, but all their friends here
in Las Vegas really miss them.
Mike and Lisa are two of my favourite people in magic.

6. Magic Museum Bellachini - Episode 45
---------------------------------------------
Message by Wittus Witt (Germany)
As
I wrote recently, I am currently working on the third volume
about cities in Germany that are particularly important
for the art of magic. Hamburg covered the first volume,
Munich the second and now it's Berlin. Berlin, a city that
was divided for many years after the Second World War, occupies
a special position. On one hand, there were several magic
clubs in Berlin and on the other hand, Germany's most famous
variety theatres were located here: the Wintergarten (in
West Berlin) and the Friedrichstadtpalast (in East Berlin).
Anyone
who was important in the world of magic performed in one
of these two theatres. In the Wintergarten, for example,
Dante (Harry August Jansen, 16 June 1882 - 16 June 1955)
gave performances in the early 1930s. He was also seen here
by Kalanag - at that time still Helmut Schreiber - who is
proven to have copied some of Dante's work later. Above
all, Schreiber/Kalanag repeatedly claimed that he had invented
the magic word Sim-Sala-Bim. But by now we have long since
established that it was Dante who first used this magic
word. Anyone familiar with Dante's large multi-page brochure,
which looks like a large travel suitcase on the outside,
will quickly realise that Kalanag also had a very similar
brochure made later.
You
can compare the two brochures here:
Here
you can find the Kalanag brochure from 1949/50 (Kalanag/Stuttgart).
https://www.zauber-pedia.de/index.php?title=Kalanag-Programmhefte
Here
you can see the Dante brochure:
https://www.zauber-pedia.de/index.php?title=Dante
Both
programmes are somewhat the same size and both show the
name large and diagonally on the title page.
See
you next week

Message by Kent Cummins, Director (US)
Texas
Association of Magicians
Everything
is bigger in Texas
or at least, that's what we Texans
say! And the Texas Association of Magicians TAOM) convention
has often been one of the largest annual magic conventions
in America.
The
convention started as a picnic hosted by Herman Yerger in
Austin, and became the TAOM on Labor Day (an American holiday)
weekend in 1944. By a wonderful coincidence, my wife Margot
was also born on Labor Day, September 4, in the same year!
So, maybe it is appropriate that we often celebrate her
birthday at this magic convention.
My
first TAOM Convention was in 1960, when I won the Teen Trophy.
I had just asked if I could perform in the show; I didn't
know there was a contest! So, for 1961, I worked hard all
year and presented what I considered a wonderful competition
act. I invited Dena Lister, the younger daughter of my friend
Glidden Lister (Jo Jo the Clown) to be my beautiful assistant.
But we lost to a 2-brother comedy act which included Tom
Britton, who has become a lifelong friend
and co-author
of The Magic of Change. Tom also eventually married Dena.
I
became President and Convention Chairman in 1983 at the
age of 40, and I am now a proud member of the Order of Willard,
awarded to us old guys (and gals) who have been participating
for many years.
If
you are reading this on Labor Day weekend, September 1-4,
2023, then I am at this year's TAOM Convention in Houston,
Texas. Souvenir programs and other memorabilia are on display
at my Fantastic Magic Center, as well as my tiny teen trophy
from 1960.
The
Fantastic Magic Center is dedicated to preserving and sharing
the art of magic. But I can't do it without your help. My
Patreon account is the same place as my free weekly podcast:

8. Futuristic... - John Carey #208
-------------------------------------------
Message by John Carey (UK)
http://www.johncareymagic.co.uk/
Futuristic
is my current favorite approach to the classic mystery card
plot. It's an improvement on a couple of versions I had
in my books Crafted with Carey and Minimalistica. This version
has a stronger theatrical build I believe.
Hand
out the deck for shuffling. "Cards have been used by
Gypsies and Psychics for generations to tell the past, present
and future. Today we shall explore what the cards say about
you, Mandy." Ask your spectator to take out any random
card and place it sight unseen face-down on the table. "This
card is the future." Take back the deck and turn it
face-up. Spread the cards and have any card freely named.
Let's say it's the Five of Spades. Remove it and ask your
helper to sign it on the face. Have the card returned and
control it to fourth from top using a favorite deceptive
method. Table the deck a moment.
"So
you have signed a card that will represent you, Mandy. Now
let's give the deck a few cuts and explore your past and
then discuss what the cards are telling me about the present."
Pick up the deck and execute any good false cut. I use the
Jay Ose false triple cut from Lorayne's Close up Card Magic.
Take the deck and spell the word PAST as you deal one card
per letter face-down onto the table in a packet. Take the
last card dealt and place it to the left of the mystery
card. Drop the deck on top of the other dealt cards and
then spell and deal the word PRESENT, one card for each
letter into a packet like before. Take the last card dealt
and place it to the
right of the mystery card. Drop the deck on top of the small
packet and set it aside.
"Let's
see what happens when we combine the past and the present
with the future." Take the card at the left end of
the row at the fingertips of the left hand and the card
at the right end of the row at the right fingertips in readiness
for Brother John Hamman's sandwich switch: Both hands
approach the mystery card at the same time. The left hand
card goes on top of it as the right hand scoops up the mystery
card. Butt the packet square and then immediately slide
out the bottom card, turn it face-up and place it on top
of the packet. With no hesitation draw out the new bottom
card, turn it face-up and then slide it to the bottom of
the packet. Table the packet face-up and spread, exhibiting
a face-down card between two face-up cards. A switch has
been done right under their nose and from a technical standpoint,
you're work is done.
Now
for some smoke. I point to the face-up card at the bottom
of the sandwich and give a little cold reading about their
past. Please keep it light! Then I focus on the upper face-up
card of the sandwich and discuss the present, giving a positive
overview. I remove the two face-up cards
and set them on top of the deck, leaving a face-down card
in view. "So the past is the past and the present is
what it is. But that card there was removed by you and placed
on the table at the very beginning. Maybe that card can
tell us something very special about you Mandy? How you
sign your name!" Have the 'mystery card' turned over
to reveal her signed card as you tell her that her future
is looking amazing!
