3. No Stone Unturned - Paul Stone - Article #114
-------------------------------------
Message by Paul Stone (US)
I've
received several emails regarding the special tours of the
Jungle Palace, Siegfried & Roy's iconic former home in
Las Vegas, which I am organizing and hosting on August 5th
& 6th.
I will be providing full details of how to book tickets in
next week's Magic New Zealand, and also through various magic
press.
This
will be a rare opportunity to not only visit this amazing
house but also to get a glimpse of Siegfried & Roy's lavish
lifestyle.
I
was very fortunate to know them well, and to have spent time
with them and enjoyed their superb hospitality on several
occasions, at a venue that regularly hosted U.S. Presidents
and major Show Business Celebrities.
The
new owners have lovingly brought this magnificent building
back to life, and whilst Siegfried & Roy's 'Little Bavaria'
home was elegant and much larger, it was at the Jungle Palace
where the 'Masters of the Impossible' spent their most successful
years, sharing this outstanding property with their spectacular
animal co-stars.
We
will be taking bookings for two tours, each with a maximum
of 25 people, one on Saturday August 5th at 2.30pm, and one
on Sunday August 6th at 11.30am.
Tickets,
which will be available to buy next week, will be $125. I
will personally host each tour, which will last around 90
minutes. Depending on demand, it is possible that an additional
tour could take place on each day.
This
truly is a limited and rare opportunity to visit this historic
and magical mansion. And the taking of photographs will be
permitted.

4. The Magic Word Podcast - Randy Wakeman

Message by Scott Wells, M.I.M.C. with Gold Star (US)
This
week we feature a magician who may not be known to all of
you because of his expertise in a specific arena: cards. Randy
Wakeman also performs and teaches some amazing coin tricks
and other close-up tricks as well, but unless you are really
interested in sleights, then you may have overlooked his excellent
lectures and workshops at the many conventions he has participated
in over the years.
He
was one of the regular Bar Magicians before the turn of the
last century where he worked at the Pickle Barrel magic bar
in Chicago and performed alongside many of the well-known
favorites of Chicago bar magic including the late Heba Haba
Al. He was part of Ed Marlo's circle of friends as attended
many of the sessions with him. Randy has also authored several
magic books including "Randy Wakeman Presents" and
also a DVD on bar magic.
As
always, you can listen to this week's episode wherever you
get your podcasts. But to view videos, see some photos, get
links, listen online and get more information, please visit:

5. Magic Museum Bellachini - Episode 37

Message by Wittus Witt (Germany)
Today
I have to report the passing away of a friend. Wolfgang Scheuer
(1934 - 2023) died on a date unknown to me, either at the
end of February or the beginning of March this year.
Who
was Wolfgang Scheuer? I think hardly anyone can remember that
name. But a lot of people will remember the name Kalanag,
won't they?
Well,
Wolfgang Scheuer had the chance to take over the Kalanag show
directly after Kalanag's sudden death in December 1963. Kalanag
had already signed a contract for a longer guest performance
at the famous Friedrichstadtpalast in Berlin. This was still
East Germany at the time. All the dates at the Friedrichstadtpalast
were coordinated with the guest performance of Kalanag's revue
"Sim Sala Bim", so nobody wanted the show to be
cancelled.
Wolfgang
Scheuer was already a renowned magician in the GDR and was
offered to take over the show. This happened on 20 October
1965, but there was not much time for rehearsals. The premiere
was to take place on 16 November.
And
indeed, the opening of the show took place on the scheduled
evening. Wolfgang Scheuer made the best of it and overall
the show was very well received by the audience. That "experts"
who knew the Kalanag show had a different opinion and criticised
the show accordingly is understandable. Of course, you can't
replace a personality. But Wolfgang Scheuer didn't want that
either, because he had his own personality.
The
tricks and illusions performed included the Kalanag routine
"The Woman without a Centre", the "Bullet Shot",
the "Indian Rope Trick", the "Floating Lady"
and others. All the props came from the stock of the Kalanag
Revue and some of them were already very worn out, but this
did not matter to the audience.
Wolfgang
Scheuer had a few more offers to continue performing the show
after his guest appearance, but he turned them down. He wanted
to be himself again. In the early 1990s he retired from the
stage and lived modestly on the outskirts of Berlin in a beautiful
new flat in Potsdam.
He
was a friendly and very sympathetic gentleman with whom I
met a few more times in recent years. It is sad that his daughter,
the only survivor, cannot be reached to find out the exact
date of his death.
You
can learn more in the Magic-Pedia, in German, but quickly
translatable via Google or Deepl.

Message by Kent Cummins, Director (US)
My
Favorite Trick?
When
people find out you do magic, do they often ask you, "What
is your favorite trick?"
"It
depends" is not a very satisfying answer, but of course
it is the most accurate answer. My favorite card trick is
Paul Curry's Out of This World. But my favorite trick deck
is the Svengali Deck invented by Burling Hull. My favorite
illusion is definitely levitation of a beautiful woman.
Blackstone Senior is the first magician I ever saw perform,
and my favorite trick of his was the Blooming Bouquet. I now
perform the Blooming Bouquet in almost every show.
But
I often consider the Ball and Vase Trick as my favorite trick.
It was the first trick I saw in my first magic store, when
Louis Berkie performed it for me at the Fun 'N Magic Shop
in San Antonio, Texas. It was the S.S. Adams red wooden vase
with a black wooden ball.
Mom
bought it for me, and apparently one of my grandparents went
to the magic shop and also bought one for me, because in my
first paid show, in 1953 at the age of ten, I performed with
two identical balls and vases, making the ball disappear from
one vase and reappear in the other, across the stage.
But
the biggest Ball and Vase that I have seen was built by Owen
Magic Supreme using a regulation NBA basketball!
Versions
of the Ball and Vase trick have appeared in cereal boxes,
magic sets, and in the oldest books on conjuring. It is truly
a classic of magic, and I have many different versions in
my collections at the Fantastic Magic Center.
The
Fantastic Magic Center is dedicated to preserving and sharing
the art of magic. But I can't do it without your help. My
Patreon account is the same place as my free weekly podcast:

8. Quaudincidence! - John Carey #205

Message by John Carey (UK)

Sometimes
it's fun to take a strong, standard effect and play with it
and twist it around a little to create a completely different
effect. In the following piece, I've taken a classic Ed Marlo
method for spectator cuts the Aces and used it to create a
strong and fooling quadruple coincidence.
There
is a small set up on top of the deck. From the top down, position
the following cards in this order: 7C, 2H, 5S, 7S, 2D and
the 5C. You will also need a business card or piece of paper.
Bring out your deck and execute an in the hands riffle shuffle,
retaining your setup. Table the deck and bring out a business
card and a pen. "Sometimes in life, you just get a hunch
about something." Write the number 13 on the back of
your business card, sight unseen and table it printed side
up.
"They
say all good things come in threes, so let me cut to a few
random cards." As you say this hold the deck from above
in the right hand. Swing cut about a third of the deck into
your palm up left hand. Then swing cut another third on top
of this packet, securing a pinky break beneath it. The right
hand drops its packet face-down onto the table, then the right
hand cuts at the break and drops that packet on top. Deal
off three face-down cards into a little pile and then drop
the remaining cards on top of the deck and square up. The
above is the classic Frank Thompson false cut, broken up.
The three face-down cards on the table are the 7C, 2H and
5S.
Hand
the deck to your spectator and ask them to cut off about a
third and table them. Then direct them to cut off another
third and table it to the right of the first packet. Finally
have them place the remaining packet to the right of all,
forming a row of three packets. "Let's see what cards
you
cut to." Pick up the left end packet of the row and hold
it face-down in left hand dealing grip. Push off the top card
about halfway over the packet leaving it side-jogged.
Then
pick up the top card of the second packet and place that side-jogged
under the first card. Finally pick up the top card of the
third packet and place it side-jogged underneath the other
two cards. The right hand comes over the packet and squares
up, securing a pinky break beneath the three side-jogged cards.
Flip the top card of this packet face, showing the 7S. The
palm down right hand takes all three cards
below
the break and places the triple card on top of the leftmost
tabled packet. It then returns to the in the hands packet
and flips over the top card, showing the 2D. Take this card
from above with the right hand and place it on top of the
other tabled packet. Finally flip over the top card of
the left hands packet, showing the 5C. Place this packet next
to the other packets, exhibiting three face-up cards.
"So
you randomly cut to these three cards. They are not the greatest
cards, but certainly not the worst either. Maybe they are
telling us something? If we add the values together we get
thirteen. That can be either lucky or unlucky." Pick
up the business card and turn it over revealing your
prediction to be uncannily accurate. Then pick up the three
face-down cards you cut to at the beginning and deal each
one face-up on top of its mate on the table to conclude this
quadruple coincidence.
