When
Jeff McBride, on our cover this month, appeared at the 1982
New York Magic Symposium and premiered his new Kabuki-inspired
act with masks it was a revelation and the start of a long
and prestigious career. His main focus has become The Mystery
School, and he is now a much-revered teacher. Larry Haas
takes us on the long tour of Mr. McBride's life and escapades.
The
2023 Academy of Magical Arts Awards Show took place this
past June. Some years had been skipped because of the pandemic,
so it was catch-up time for the performing awards. Lots
of worthy folks received fellowships. Dustin Stinett was
there to report for us, with photos by Najee Williams and
Taylor Wong. It was also the last public appearance by Milt
Larsen, co-founder (along with Bill and Irene) of The Magic
Castle. Milt was the guy who built the place and kept adding
to it. When Bill and later Irene died, Milt became a regular
fixture at the club. David Regal remembers Milton Page Larsen.
Our
third story is one of a series that focuses on local magic
venues throughout the U.S.A. This time we travel to San
Antonio, Texas, and visit the Alamo
and Scott Pepper's
the Magicians' Agency Theatre.
It's
the second month for Robert Ramirez as the new "Magicana"
wrangler, and there's something extremely interesting in
this column. It's a Torn and Restored Card that uses only
one card (any card). The card is genuinely torn into four
pieces. There are no gimmicks, and nothing is added or taken
away. It's puzzling
literally.
In
"Chamber of Secrets" John Gaughan shows us a little
French gent who ignites a match which lights a cigarette
in a roundabout way.
David
Kaye takes us to county fairs around the United States,
and the magicians who do kid shows at them, in "The
Expert at the Kids' Table."
I
don't have the cujones to try the bluff inherent in David
Britland's trick in this month's "Cardopolis,"
but maybe you do!
In
this month's "Exhumations," Jon Racherbaumer begins
with Latin and a strangely deceptive force.
Random
thoughts are the thoughts that Rafael Benatar gives you
in "Thoughts
."
A Stop Trick using a bell and an ingenious Deck Switch will
be yours if you read Roberto Mansilla's "Artifices"
this month.
Vanessa
Armstrong teases and tantalizes you with the latest news
in "The Eye."
Shawn McMaster delves in depth into The Library at The Magic
Castle in "Knights at The Magic Castle."
"Light
from the Lamp" brings us reviews of the latest books,
videos, and tricks from David Britland, Joe M. Turner, and
Mark Phillips.

4. No Stone Unturned - Paul Stone - Article #113
-------------------------------------
Message by Paul Stone (US)
I'm
writing this week's article on June 21, historically the
longest day of the year. I'm in Atlanta, Georgia for a few
days visiting friends, and as I look out of the window,
the skies are grey, and it is pouring with rain! For one
brief moment, I thought I was back in England!
Yesterday
I met up with an old friend, Ricky Kalmon, whom I had not
seen for several years. Although he has lived in Atlanta
now for 18 years, Ricky originally hailed from St Louis,
a city that I spent considerable time visiting a couple
of decades ago.
Ricky
is a seasoned entertainer, a hypnotist and successful corporate
speaker. I was first introduced to him probably thirty years
ago when, as a young aspiring professional, he was being
mentored by a mutual friend, Rick Neiswonger.
In
those days, I used to bring groups of UK magicians over
to USA, and on one of the trips we attended the IBM Convention
in St Louis. There were actually 150 UK magicians and their
wives. Thinking about it now, I'm not sure how I pulled
that off! I definitely couldn't do it today!
It
was at that convention that we first saw Jeff Hobson perform,
and were blown away by his hilarious act. It was also when
I got to spend time with a couple of other St Louis residents,
Shep Hyken, another great corporate speaker, and Past President
of the National Speakers Association, who became a close
friend, and who happily I'm still in contact with to this
day.
The
other close friend, who sadly is no longer with us, and
whom I greatly miss, was Bud Dietrich, a really classy and
kind gentleman and a top Tradeshow magician, who taught
me that side of the magic business. Bud was one of the original
Tradeshow entertainers, who paved the way for so many other
magicians to follow.
Finally,
I want to remind you about the special limited opportunity
to visit the JUNGLE PALACE, the original home of Siegfried
& Roy, on Saturday August 5th and Sunday August 6th.
Just
to remind you once again of the details that I published
in last week's Magic New Zealand, there will only be four
tours of a maximum of 25 people, at 11am & 2.30pm on
August 5 & 6.
I will personally escort the groups, and the tours will
last approx. 90 minutes. You will have the opportunity to
take as many photos as you'd like at the Jungle Palace.
The
fee is $125, and these limited tickets will go on sale on
July 1st. Full details will be published in the various
magical press.
There
has already been considerable interest from magicians who
will be visiting Las Vegas for Magic Live.
The
Jungle Palace is an iconic venue, and this is a rare opportunity
to visit the fabulous home of two Las Vegas magic legends.

Message by Scott Wells, M.I.M.C. with Gold Star (US)
While
recently performing at the Magic Castle, we had an opportunity
to record several episodes with different magicians who
were working that same week. One such performer was Ron
Saylor who is the owner and producer of the Celebrities
of Magic Theater in Bakersfield, California, about 100 miles
north of Los Angeles. Ron books acts months in advance and
features some of the top names in our industry.
Last
week we gave you some ideas on how to create a magic theater
for children in your area. This week we talk about Ron's
theater that successfully operates in a community that is
not known for its tourism. Perhaps this business model might
inspire you to consider finding a similar venue in your
back yard.
You
can listen wherever you get your podcasts. But for more
information, watch the videos, see some photos, get some
links and more, please visit: https://www.themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/766-ron-saylor
And please help our podcast grow by liking, sharing and
subscribing to The Magic Word Podcast and leaving a five
star rating and comments on whatever platform you use to

6. Magic Museum Bellachini - Episode 36
---------------------------------------------
Message by Wittus Witt (Germany)
Keeping
a museum alive is not easy. Old things stay old. But they
can be replaced, of course. So it is interesting for every
museum to present changing exhibitions from time to time,
so that it stays alive and can always offer something "new".
This is important for the public, but also for the press,
which thus again receives new information to report on.
From
the very beginning, I set up an area in the museum for such
special exhibitions. Currently, this section is dedicated
to the magician Fredo Raxon (1923 - 2008), who performed
very successfully on television and international stages
in Germany in the 1980s and 1990s.
Among
his special tricks were the "vase and rope", the
"card sword" and a unique version of the trick
where a drinking glass is knocked through the top of a table.
A feat we all know, but have only ever performed sitting
at a table. The glass is wrapped in paper. Then the covered
glass is struck with the hand and brought out from under
the table. Raxon masterfully performed this feat standing
on large stages. However, he produced the glass at the end
from the jacket of the spectator standing next to him. I
can't remember any fellow magician who also performed this
feat.
The
exhibition shows photos and early posters of Raxon as well
as his original stage table, the original vase and the card
sword. In early times Raxon also performed the floating
cane like Fredo Marvelli. This cane is also on display.

--------------------------------------------
Message by Kent Cummins, Director (US)
The
Kitchen Magician
Last
week, I talked about magic that physically hurts someone
often
the magician himself!
But the worst thing I have ever done as a magician involved
Abbott's Disecto, that strange-looking red-and-yellow wrist
chopper. I couldn't afford to buy one when I was a teen-age
magician, but later I purchased one at the World-Famous
Austin Magic Auction (www.AustinMagicAuction.com)
I
was providing training sessions for military club managers,
based on my experience creating a sandwich shop chain in
Austin, Texas. The restaurants were named, "the SamWitch
shops," and featured a cartoon witch named Sam, drawn
by my famous uncle, Jack Kent.
As
part of the demonstration, I brought out the Disecto, which
I called, "The Kitchen Magician." I modeled my
presentation to sound like those late-night television commercials,
put on a Chef's hat and apron, and created an entertaining
routine to get people laughing before I taught them the
serious stuff.
I
invited one of the Air Force managers up to assist with
the demonstration, and had him hold a raw potato in the
middle hole as I sliced it, demonstrating the "amazing
properties of the Kitchen Magician!"
"To
demonstrate the incredible safety features of this marvelous
appliance, let's see what happens if your arm was to accidentally
slip into the path of the blade." I put carrots into
the upper and lower holes, and smash down the blade, slicing
the carrots cleanly in two
while not harming the spectator's
arm.
But
this guy had very skinny arms, and the blade cut his wrist
fairly badly. (I wish I had previously read about smoothing
the blade edges with a Dremel Tool, described in a book
by Paul Osborne.)
The
Fantastic Magic Center is dedicated to preserving and sharing
the art of magic. But I can't do it without your help. My

9. Empowered - John Carey #204
-------------------------------------------
Message by John Carey (UK)
http://www.johncareymagic.co.uk/
The
spectator as magician or mind reader plot is a fascinating
and strong one. My dear friend, the incredibly talented
Michael Murray has some wonderful work in this area in his
book a piece of my mind. What I've put together here is
an age old principle flipped on its head to create the illusion
of the spectator reading my mind. Interested? Read on! To
begin with have a card peeked at via a standard riffle peek
and stop procedure and keep a left pinky beneath it. "Lock
the thought of that card into your mind. Have you ever read
a mind Mick? Ah there's a first time for everything.
To
make it interesting, I will think of a different colored
card to yours. Is the card you are thinking of red or black?
Ok then I will think of a black card. Got one. I will place
my thought face-down on the table." The right hand
comes over the deck from above and turns the deck over from
left to right. A small step will form at the break enabling
you to peek their card. This is Edward Marlo's book break.
Let's say it's the Seven of Hearts. Spread through the deck
with the faces towards you and take out their card and drop
it face-down onto the table.
"OK
then, Mick, just look at me and I will count to three and
I want you to go with your first thought and attempt to
name my thought of card." Let's say he says Jack of
Clubs. Look down at the card on the table then look at your
helper and smile. "Do you have this week's winning
lottery numbers too? I will now try and delve into your
mind. I'm getting the sense of a heart card, not that high,
but not too low either. Don't say a word just yet and I
will take out what I believe is the card you are merely
thinking of."
Turn
the deck face-up and spread through it with the faces towards
you, pausing a couple of times to create some dramatic tension.
Then take out the card they believed you thought of - the
Jack of Clubs and drop it face down on top of the other
tabled card, slightly askew. "So card mysteries are
just like a great novel, with a beginning, a middle were
tabled here. To finish we need to see how in sync both our
minds are today Mick. What card are you thinking of? The
seven of Hearts? And what card did you intuit as my thought
of card? Let's see how close we
both came. Impossible!!!"
As
you deliver the above final monologue the right hand simply
comes down on top of the two face-down cards and drags them
off the table. Then as you deliver the closing line it simply
lowers and throws both cards face-up onto the table so that
they separate. No need for moves here. Just be casual and
do it.
Notes:
The
genesis of this effect comes from an Edward Marlo piece
in his book the Cardician called Impromptu Double Thought.
In that effect two spectators minds were apparently read
using the classic one behind principle that I use in my
presentation. It dawned on me that it would be pretty strong
to flip this idea a little and empower my spectator to read
my mind and make them the star.
