Message by Paul Stone (US)
A
few months ago, I reported that the long-time home of Siegfried
& Roy, the JUNGLE PALACE, here in Las Vegas, was put
up for sale and sold within just four hours.
As
I mentioned it was bought by Circus Impressario George Carden
and his son Brett, owners of the Carden International Circus.
For
many of us in Show Business, and especially those in the
world of magic, we were all delighted and relieved that
this iconic building was not only to be saved from developers,
but lovingly brought back to its magnificent condition,
and preserved as a true legacy to these two true magic legends.
And
now, after several weeks of virtually non-stop renovation
work, costing a cool $1,000,000, the Jungle Palace is once
again back to its former glory.
The
new owners have bought back at auction many original Siegfried
& Roy artefacts to restore the original look and feel
of this very unique building.
Wally
Eastwood, well known in this city as the host of 'V' the
Ultimate Variety Show at Planet Hollywood Hotel & Casino,
is a cousin of the Carden family, and has previously worked
on several Circus related projects with George Carden, including
at the Orleans Arena here in Las Vegas.
Wally
is a brilliant juggler and comedy entertainer, and has performed
well over 50,000 shows on the Las Vegas Strip in a successful
career which has so far lasted more than 30 years in the
entertainment capital of the world.
For
the past few months, in addition to performing nightly in
the 'V' Show, Wally has taken on the huge job of spearheading
and co-ordinating the complete renovation of the Jungle
Palace which, take my word for it, has been a daunting task!
But his, and the owners hard work and commitment have paid
off handsomely, and the result is impressive.
As
regular readers of my articles will know, I have been a
Show & Event Producer for many years both in UK and
in USA, and I'm pleased to say that I will be actively involved
in promoting the Jungle Palace as a unique and historic
Las Vegas venue.
And
although future plans for the Jungle Palace are still being
finalized, I am delighted to announce that the owners have
agreed that we will specially open up the Jungle Palace
exclusively for out of town magicians who will be visiting
Las Vegas for 'Magic Live', and also for local magicians.
Due
to the location, this is a very limited opportunity for
four groups only of a maximum of 25 people, and places will
be allocated on a 'first come, first served' basis.
Each
tour will last for 90 minutes and will cover the whole property
and grounds of the Jungle Palace.
I
was fortunate to know Siegfried & Roy well for over
40 years, and I will personally host each tour and share
little known stories about their incredible careers, and
insights into the way these 'Masters of the Impossible'
lived their lives with many of their animal co-stars, at
this amazing mansion.
And,
for the first time ever at the Jungle Palace, you will have
the opportunity to take photographs.
The
tours will take place at 11am and 2.30pm on Saturday August
5th and Sunday August 6th.
Tickets
are $125 and will be put on sale on July 1st. Full details
on how to reserve your ticket will be published shortly
in the magic press.

Message by Scott Wells, M.I.M.C. with Gold Star (US)
While
attending the recent convention in St. Louis, Missouri,
we took a side trip to visit Abra-Kid-Abra, a stand-alone
venue for children's birthday parties and other juvenile
celebrations. They have an indoor bounce house, many construction
activities, a room for a magic show, a separate room for
cake and ice cream and opening presents, too. Why travel
to perform birthday parties when you can host the parties
and have the children come to you?
This
week we chat with the proprietors, Dan Davis and Jeff Lefton
who pull back the curtain and explain their business model
for all who might be interested in pursuing a similar venue
in their own locale. You can listen wherever you get your
podcasts, but for more information, please visit
https://www.themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/765-abra-kid-abra
This week we also congratulate David Cupps, Gary Friedrich
and Simon Carmel who were the winners of our recent contest
for copies of "Take Five" by Michael Breggar.
Even if your name wasn't drawn, Michael is offering a steep
discount on his eBook to listeners of the Magic Word Podcast.
Just visit this week's website for details on how you can
get your copy.

8. Magic Museum Bellachini - Episode 35
---------------------------------------------
Message by Wittus Witt (Germany)
Some
time ago I asked here where there are museums that deal
exclusively with the art of magic.
Today
I ask: Who knows where the very first magic exhibition took
place? My magical colleague Michelle Ainsworth from the
USA gave a very well researched lecture on this at the meeting
of the "New England Magic Collectors Association"
some time ago. She also asked me for catalogues from my
gallery at that time.
Finally, I asked Michelle if I could publish her talk in
my other magazine "ABC der Taschenspieler-Kunst"
(ABC of the Art of Legerdemain). This is, if you like, the
German version of the American "Gibecière",
edited by Bill Kalush. My periodical is also opublished
twice a year in book form and is devoted to many different
magic topics.
So
the next issue - No. 12 - will deal with magic exhibitions.
Michelle has now been able to research over 250 exhibitions
and around 100 catalogues. A great work, which will be accompanied
by many, many photos. I should note that these are not magic
museums, but only temporary exhibitions.
I
present an impression of the wealth of material in my Thursday
YouTube film:
https://youtu.be/eLhqJv-DST0
In
any case, there will be another exhibition at the end of
the year. On 17 November, the great German magician Alexander
Adrion would have turned 100. In his honour, my colleague
Stefan Alexander Rautenberg and I will curate a special
exhibition in my museum. There will also be a comprehensive
catalogue book.
That's
all for now.

10. Tales From The Fantastic Magic Center - #45
--------------------------------------------
Message by Kent Cummins, Director (US)
Magic
That Hurts!
Last
week, I talked about magic that doesn't work. This week,
continuing the theme, I want to share some stories about
magic that hurts!
I
know, as magicians, it hurts us to see Bad Magic! But I
am talking about actually, physically, hurting someone.
For example, the first and last time I ever performed the
Razor Blade Trick was for a show at my middle school, Baton
Rouge Junior High School, for the March of Dimes. I was
slicing a piece of paper to prove that the blades were sharp,
and I accidentally sliced my finger!
I
took out my pocket handkerchief, wrapped up the bleeding
finger, and continued with the show. Later, when I was packing
up, a friend came backstage to tell me he enjoyed my show
but
that "pretending to cut your finger" was ridiculous.
I
unwrapped my blood-stained handkerchief, and showed him
my cut finger.
I
had heard that David Copperfield once cut his finger while
performing a cut and restored rope trick. I thought that
was ridiculous, until the day that I cut my own finger while
doing The Rope Trick. I took out my pocket handkerchief,
wrapped up the cut finger, and finished the show. Nobody
came up afterwards to see if it was real.
I
have performed the French Guillotine hundreds of times,
and nobody has ever been even the least bit hurt. I have
sawed hundreds of people in half with a power saw, without
any injury.
But
my worst "trick that hurt somebody" was with Abbott's
Disecto, which I used in my Sandwich Magic training as "The
Kitchen Magician." I'll tell you that story next week.
The
Fantastic Magic Center is dedicated to preserving and sharing
the art of magic. But I can't do it without your help. My
Patreon account is the same place as my free weekly podcast:

11. On The Up - John Carey #203
-------------------------------------------
Message by John Carey (UK)
http://www.johncareymagic.co.uk/
The
following script for the ambitious card was totally inspired
by my amazingly talented friend, Andrew Gerard's ambitious
card effect I saw on his conscious magic volume 2 DVD. I
loved his premise but wanted a script that fitted my personality.
I urge you to try this out on a lady just once and I promise
you will not be disappointed with the reaction!
"Today
Sarah I want to attempt something that is all about you.
Firstly just think of any card and take it from the deck.
Now we need something personal to work with and it doesn't
get more personal than your name. Please write your name
across that four of Hearts. The way you write your name
tells me you are quite a confident person. Please return
your card to the middle. I'm not going to shuffle or cut
the cards or indeed do anything except place the deck in
the palm of your hand. Please trap the deck into a temporary
state of darkness by covering it with your other hand.
Now
I would like for the next few moments for you to close your
eyes and take a deep breath in and then out. Everyone has
their ups and downs in life and I guess we all deal with
them differently. Can you think back to a particular period
where everything seemed to be a low?
Either
emotionally or professionally and it seemed to get you down?
But then you turned the corner and things starting looking
up. The negatives turned to positives and things improved.
Just like at this moment in time with you looking at me
and me looking at you and you holding a thought trapped
between your palms. The only thing I will say is that things
are looking good and I would advise you to follow your dreams.
In fact, the only way is up!"
Method:
From
a method point one has so many options. I simply have the
signed face-up card returned to the face-up deck and use
a Hofzinser cull to covertly control it to the top. For
me, it's the perfect tool for this job.
Whatever
you use, treat the effect and presentation with respect
and it will pay you back in Spades. Yes there's only one
phase, but sometimes less really can mean more...
