I
was very sad to hear about the passing of Harry Lorayne.
His books and videos have been a huge part of my life since
Close Up Card Magic came out. I discovered him back in England
at Ken Brooke's Magic Place when Fred Kaps was frying people
with The Moving Pencil. Harry's legacy is astonishing.

4. No Stone Unturned - Paul Stone - Article #103
-------------------------------------
Message by Paul Stone (US)
These
days, I don't often venture down to the Las Vegas Strip,
I really only do so if there is a new show opening, or if
I have friends visiting the entertainment capital of the
world.
Last
week however, that was the case as Russ Brown, one of the
organisers of the Annual Blackpool Magicians Club Convention,
was in town to celebrate a special Wedding Anniversary with
his wife Debbie, and their 11 year old daughter, Florence,
who is like 11 going on 21!
I
ended up seeing four shows in three days, something I haven't
done since I first came to Las Vegas in 1981, as the European
Adviser to the Desert Magic Seminar.
First
up was the Mad Apple Show at New York, New York Hotel and
Casino. I'd heard a great deal about this show, and I was
not disappointed. As a huge fan of Variety, this was right
up my street.
The
speciality acts were all outstanding, and equally impressive
for me, were the musicians, who moved in and out of the
fabulous looking set and integrated with all the performers
seamlessly. And every one of them was superb.
The
show is advertised for adults only, and is aimed at the
same audience I suspect as another past Cirque du Soleil
Show, Zumanity.
But
where this show differs from other X rated shows like Absinthe,
which plays to packed houses in the Spiegel tent in front
of Caesar's Palace, is that the only reason that the show
is for adults only is because of the host, who is comedian
/ magician Harrison Greenbaum.
Now,
I don't want to take anything away from Harrison, he is
a brilliant performer, and a wonderful host. But in this
show, it is his material alone that is X rated. He is hilarious,
but very definitely, and deliberately X rated.
Now
don't get me wrong, I loved every minute of his performance,
which was a key part of the show, linking it all together,
but the acts, the musicians and the whole staging and choreography
of the show was so good, that I'm not sure that his material
needed to be X rated. Just my opinion of course, but I'm
old school!!
Harrison
is a tremendous talent, both as a comedian, and a magician,
yes he did do a couple of tricks too, cleverly involving
the audience.
The
following night, the Brown family and I went to see another
Cirque show, Mystere, which I've seen on many occasions.
Mystere was the first Cirque du Soleil Show to play Las
Vegas, and the original show was in a tent at the Mirage
Hotel & Casino in 1993.
It
moved to its current home at Treasure Island Hotel &
Casino, and is still playing to packed audiences after 30
years! We went to the second house, the 9.30pm late show.
This was all courtesy of a good friend of mine, Gabrielle
Lyster, who is the Wardrobe Mistress for the show.
Gabrielle
hails from New Zealand, and still has the tell-tale accent
to prove it! She has been in Las Vegas for over 25 years,
firstly as Wardrobe Mistress for Master Magician Lance Burton,
at the Monte Carlo Hotel & Casino for 14 years, then
with Criss Angel's Show for 7 years, and now at Mystere.
Not
only did she arrange tickets for us, but she went the extra
mile
actually several miles, to give us a fantastic
and comprehensive backstage tour after the show. It was
amazing! Gabrielle, you're the best!
The
next day, after a quick run up to take the Browns to see
Red Rock Canyon, we went to Mac King's afternoon show at
the Excalibur Hotel & Casino. It was Spring Break and
Easter week, and I'm pleased to say that the showroom was
packed.
Mac
is Mac! His show is so honed to perfection. Every move,
every line, has been carefully crafted to gain maximum audience
response, and his timing is immaculate.
Mac
is booked to headline the Blackpool Convention next February,
and whether you've never seen him perform live, or like
me, you've seen him many times, it's always a brilliant
show, so catch it if you can!
And
last, but not least, after his show stopping performances
at this year's Blackpool Convention, we went downtown to
the Four Queen's Hotel & Casino, to see Mike Hammer's
show.
Mike
is one of the most successful magicians to play Las Vegas,
and has been headlining his own one-man show at the Four
Queens for 13 years. He is edgy, but for me, he is the master
at working an audience.
He's
first and foremost a comedy performer, but his show is also
full of strong magic. He has recently introduced two new
and original illusions, which are real foolers.
I
strongly recommend you go to his show if you are in Las
Vegas. And his show is the best value in town!
It
was definitely a fast and furious few days, but it was great
to spend time with Russ, Debbie and Florence, who are now
winding up their holiday in the magic world of Disneyland!

9. Magic Museum Bellachini - Episode 26
---------------------------------------------
Message by Wittus Witt (Germany)
This
weekend (April 14-16) the German-speaking meeting of magic
historians will take place for the 30th time. When I first
organized the collecting meeting in Germany in 1980, there
were about a dozen magic historians who gathered in the
magic studio of the magic dealer Werry near Aachen. Surprisingly,
after more than 40 years, the number of active collectors
has not developed much.
About
30 colleagues have registered for this year's meeting. This
year's meeting is organized by Thomas Gundlach, who also
leads the Magic Circle in Hamburg. For the welcome evening
a meeting in my museum Bellachini was originally planned,
but unfortunately I had to cancel this program item for
personal reasons.
The
official program includes several speakers with very interesting
topics:
Dr.
Andreas Michel-Andino: Alexander Adrion as an intellectual
representative of the art of magic.
Prof.
Dr. Peter Rawert: Posting slips for all kinds of magic spectacles
Fritz Weil: Peter Weyganda and his mysterious box Jan Isenbarth:
Marvelli as photographer and hotelier in Spain Hans Christian
Solkau: Myth Charlier - Fact or Fake?
Reinhard
Müller: Motzkart
Stefan
Alexander Rautenberg: Conversation with the King of Magic
"Zauberkönig Berlin"
Birgit Bartl-Engelhardt: Fragile magic in the Third Reich
Thomas Gundlach: Magic Switchboards Hans Bäumer: Maru
- the first professional mentalist of East Germany Claus
Wegener-Dixon: Eddy Taytelbaum Jörg Willich: Graphic
design for magicians Fl!p Hallema: Larette.

10. Tales From The Fantastic Magic Center - #36
--------------------------------------------
Message by Kent Cummins, Director (US)
Terrifying
Tigers!
Tigers
have been a part of my magic shows for six decades
but
never a live tiger. I left that for Siegfried and Roy, who
did it incredibly well!
But
I do have a trick in my magic show in which I tear a tiger
apart piece by piece, make the pieces disappear, and then
restore the tiger. I call it, "The Tale of the Terrifying
Tiger!"
I tell the audience that I am about to perform a magic trick
with a terrifying tiger, and anyone who might be afraid
is welcome to close their eyes
or even to leave the
room if they need to. I then take off a camouflage cloth
from a frame on the table, displaying a cute (and not at
all terrifying) tiger jigsaw puzzle.
It's
a fuzzy tiger jigsaw puzzle that I found at the dime store
and, with the help of my brother Carter, turned into a magic
trick.
I
continue to pretend that the tiger is dangerous, as I don
a pith helmet and pick up a rifle. Then I take out the pieces
of the puzzle, putting them into a net hanging from the
rifle. I cover the now-empty frame, fire the rifle, and
the net falls to reveal that the pieces are gone
except
for one piece.
When
I pull the cloth back off the frame, the tiger is seen to
be restored
except for his tail. Yes, I pick up the
piece from the floor and it is the missing tail. The TAIL
of the Terrifying Tiger!
Next week, I will tell you about the time my daughter was
crapped on by a tiger during a magic show.
The
Fantastic Magic Center is dedicated to preserving and sharing
the art of magic. But I can't do it without your help. My

11. CAAN You Believe It? - John Carey #194
-------------------------------------------
Message by John Carey (UK)
http://www.johncareymagic.co.uk/
In
recent times there has been a resurgence in the card plot
any card at any number, popularized of course by the work
of David Berglas. Many are seeking a 'holy grail' method
but few come even close in my opinion. The following falls
into the category of a predicted card at any number and
has as the core method an old number force of number nine
that my great friend Chris Wood kindly shared with me.
If
you ask a spectator to think of a two digit number between
ten and twenty, then take away the sum of the digits, the
total will always be nine. For example, thirteen: 13 - 4
= 9. This got me thinking and I realized a larger range
of numbers could be thought of that would all total a multiple
of nine using this concept. A number between 10 and 50 would
automatically be either 9,18,27,36 or 45 using the force
concept. Very interesting!
So
for our prediction effect you will require five duplicate
cards that are not conspicuous. The 4 of Clubs is perfect.
Position each duplicate at positions 9,18,27,36 and 45 from
the top of the deck down. You also require a business card
with a prediction of that card written down on it. Or use
a stranger card.
Bring
out the deck and envelope and set the envelope aside without
fanfare. Remove the cards and casually display the faces
then execute any deceptive false shuffle. Hand the deck
to a helper and walk and talk them through the Jay Ose false
cut from Lorayne's Close up card magic - see notes.
"Mick,
numbers play such an important role in everyone's lives.
Door numbers, PIN numbers and social security numbers to
name just a few examples. The lottery is yet another example
of something with numbers many have a fascination with.
Do you have a good imagination? Excellent! Imagine a glass
bowl on the table filled with little white balls with numbers
from ten to fifty on them. Further imagine you reaching
into that bowl and swirling the balls around with your hand.
Then finally I want you to imagine taking out any numbered
ball. Imagine it in your hand, right there, right now. What
number do you see in your mind, Mick? Thirty two is a good
number. I was thirty two - once!
Now
I want you to add the two digits of that number together
to form what numerology experts call a life number. Now
subtract that number from your original thought of number
to form a completely random number nobody could have envisaged."
Of course in the above example the number twenty seven is
forced. You just have to make the little process necessary
interesting and succinct before moving on. Ask your helper
to deal and count the cards out loud into a neat face-up
pile.
When
they get to twenty six stop them and ask them to deal the
next card face-down away from the tabled packet. Take the
remainder of the deck from them and casually deal a few
more faceup cards, showing random indifferent values. Then
focus attention on the envelope, stating that inside is
a message. Ask them to open it and read out the message,
calling out the 4 of Clubs. Request they turn over the card
that was at their number to successfully conclude the mystery.
Notes:
It
goes without saying that if they originally think of one
of your force numbers then no further math is necessary!
