There
is something for everyone at the S.A.M. National Convention.
Each show is a "never to be repeated" event and

8. Magic Museum Bellachini - Episode 24
---------------------------------------------
Message by Wittus Witt (Germany)
Last Friday I could give away the 500th ticket to my museum.
Wow! That means that since the opening in December 2022,
I have been able to welcome an average of 10 guests a day.
I am curious to see how it will continue.
In addition to such a pleasant fact, something less pleasant
has unfortunately become apparent in the last few days.
My secretary, who has been helping in my office for about
3 years, suddenly informed me that she will no longer be
working for me. Oops! Of course I asked her why. And now,
dear colleagues, brace yourselves! Her answer was: I can
no longer reconcile my work with you with my (Christian)
faith!
I was absolutely speechless? What does the good Lord have
against theatre? But I didn't discuss it with her. You can't
discuss faith, in my opinion. So I immediately dismissed
her and dutifully thanked her for the cooperation so far.
This reminded me of a similar incident almost exactly 30
years ago. At that time, I was to perform at an event where
the director of the Toy Museum in Nuremberg was bid farewell.
Dr. Lydia Bayer. Shortly before the date, I received a cancellation
for my appearance. The reason was: The head of the culture
department said that if Mr. Witt comes, she won't come.
She does not want to appear with a person who is in league
with the devil.
Can you imagine that? Reginald Scot's book suddenly becomes
reality again in the 20th and 21st centuries. What I'm saying
is that it has to be published again ...
But, life is already wonderful ... As I write these lines
(29 March), I receive a kind invitation from the parish
of the district where my museum is located to give a lecture
on the art of magic and my museum.
Thank God!
So much for today.
Thank you for your interest.

9. No Stone Unturned - Paul Stone - Article #101
-------------------------------------
Message by Paul Stone (US)
It
is amazing how fast the first three months of 2023 have
come and gone. Next week it will be Easter.
My
mind goes back many years, probably the best part of 40
years in fact, when I was living in UK, to the Northern
Magic Circle's Easter weekend in the picturesque Victorian
spa town of Harrogate in Yorkshire.
It
was a small convention, or actually more like a large gathering
of friends. There were a couple of lectures and shows but
the main event that I remember was a Gala Black Tie Dinner,
and the Toastmaster, in his resplendent Red Tail Coat with
gavel in hand, a certain John Pye.
John
was a talented and confident performer although he wasn't
full time, because he ran a successful family photographic
business. John progressed to become not only President of
the IBM British Ring, but also the International IBM President.
He was also very active with FISM.
Sadly
John died last year but he will always be remembered as
a true gentleman.
Although
the Northern Magic Circle had a relatively small membership,
it nonetheless boasted a very vibrant and successful Junior
section, which was run for several years by Cynthia Neptune.
Her partner was the well-known and respected British magician,
Johnny Neptune.
I've
always believed that it is important to encourage as many
young people as possible to join magic clubs. There are
so many benefits, including building confidence, and the
opportunity to learn a skill and meet new friends. I think
those of us who have been around the magic scene for many
years are duty bound to support any youngster who shows
an interest in our wonderful art.
Which
is why this week I salute Diana Zimmerman and Lance Burton.
40
years ago, Diana, together with no less a name than Cary
Grant, established the Magic Castle Juniors, a program that
is still very much thriving to this day and that has been
responsible for producing a number of top performers. Although
Diana has taken more of a back seat these days, she very
rarely misses one of their monthly meetings.
Lance
started the Teen program at the Las Vegas Desert Magic Seminar,
and has successfully continued it at the Annual IBM Convention,
and will be once again be hosting this special event in
July at the IBM Convention in Pittsburgh.
For
aspiring young magicians to have the opportunity to benefit
from Lance's long performing experience at the highest level,
and his unique talent, is priceless.
And,
as I mentioned in my article last week, he's still out there
performing to full houses with his Lance Burton & Friends
touring show. Kudos to him.

Magic
with a Rabbit
Iris
the Eye Bunny became an important part of my magic show
when I became "Mr. See It, the Magician with a Vision"
for Texas State Optical (TSO) in 1986. She was a cute, white
baby dwarf rabbit whose job it was to magically appear from
the 3-D Bunny Box at the end of each show. (I talked about
Mr. See It in Episode #12.)
As
I was preparing for my first show as Mr. See It, I thought
that Iris might need some water
which I provided before
putting her in the 3-D Bunny Box. When I produced her at
the end of the show, she sprayed rabbit pee everywhere!
I learned to only give her water AFTER each show.
Once
during a small-town newspaper interview, the reporter was
upset because when she asked who I "really" was,
I explained that as long as I was in costume, I was just
Mr. See It. (Would Santa Claus tell a reporter that he was
really Chris Walden?) When the article appeared, it featured
a photo and story about Iris the Eye Bunny. I was not mentioned.
After
more than 500 shows, TSO cancelled the Mr. See It program,
and we were told to return all costumes and props. But they
decided I could keep the rabbit! When I took her to the
veterinarian for a check-up, the vet said, "You realize
this is a male rabbit, right?"
Nope.
I
changed the rabbit's name to Bonkers the Bunny, and HE continued
performing with me for several more years. It was Bonkers
who appeared when I used the Doves to Rabbit trick, mentioned
last week.
Adorable
photos of the famous rabbit are on display at my Fantastic
Magic Center.
The
Fantastic Magic Center is dedicated to preserving and sharing
the art of magic. Check out my free weekly podcast at:

11. Sync 2.0 - John Carey #192

Message by John Carey (UK)

In
each of my three previous books I've had a version of a
mental effect called Think N Sync. It's proved to be very
popular amongst magicians for its strong effect and ease
of working. Always believing there's no such thing as a
finished piece, I offer here the latest incarnation
which I'm extremely pleased with.
Ask
a spectator to shuffle the deck and then table it. "Ava,
if I asked you to think of a playing card, the chances are
you might think of one of the popular cards such as the
Queen of Hearts or the Ace of Spades. So in order to make
this experiment completely random I'm going to ask you
to combine two actions: a mental one and a physical one.
Firstly would you think of either red or black? Now just
think of one of the suits of that colour. Picture it in
your mind big and bold. Now the physical aspect of this.
Imagine
this deck you shuffled is made up only of numbers. With
your thumb would you simply open up the deck and put the
thought of the number you see into your mind as I look away?
Now combine your thoughts to form a random card that only
you know. So if you are thinking of Clubs and two your thought
would be two of Clubs etc. So it's like I've just walked
into the room and you're thinking of a card. Be honest,
you're not thinking of a red card are you? I thought so.
I will take a card from the deck and place it on the table.
Would you now take out the card you are thinking of and
table it too? It's not there? You sure? What card are you
thinking of Ava? Turn my card over. Impossible!"
From
a method point of view this is extremely simple, but efficient.
Once the deck has been shuffled and tabled your helper thinks
red or black. Let's say it's red. Then they think either
Hearts or Diamonds. That's the mental part. Pick up the
deck and hold it in left hand dealers grip. Demonstrate
what you would like them to do by breaking open the deck
using your right thumb as you ask them to imagine the deck
is made up only of numbers (1). Turn away as they comply
and secure a left pinky break beneath the card (2). Turn
back and grip the deck from above with the right hand at
the inner and outer left corners with your right thumb and
second finger (3). Revolve the deck face-up from left to
right and the break automatically converts into a step which
enables you to secretly peek the value (4), say 4, then
immediately ribbon spread the deck face-up. This is the
book break peek of Ed Marlo.
All
we have to ascertain now is the colour of their card to
bring the trick home successfully. I simply ask: "Be
honest, you're not thinking of a red card are you?"
If they say yes I say I thought so. If they say no I say
I thought not. Just be casual in this moment. In our example
we secretly know their card is a 4 and red but we do not
know the suit. But the good news is it doesn't matter! I
simply pick up the deck and take out the first red four
I come to and table it face-down. I hand the spectator the
deck and request they take out their thought of card. Two
scenarios will arise.
They
won't be able to find their card and so you draw attention
to the card you removed and reveal it. Or they will remove
a card which means the climax is a different one. I would
ask them to reveal their card, say 4 of Hearts. I then point
to my card and say that this is as close as I could get.
I turn it over to reveal the other red Four. "And you
can't get much closer than that!" Credit to my friend
Raj Madhok for this great line.
