2. Ben Murphy Tackled During Royal Caribbean Cruise Performance

Magician Ben Murphy tackled during Royal Caribbean Cruise performance on Quantum of the Seas

Ben Murphy was performing on Royal Caribbean's Quantum of the Seas on March 1 when he invited a female passenger on stage.

A member of the audience was recording the show when Murphy kicked off his latest trick with the woman.

In the video, Murphy leans towards the woman, sitting on the stage, and uses his mouth to touch a folded card wedged between her lips.

He leaned in gently to tap their cards together as part of the cheeky performance before a man then rushed at him.

Murphy's face lit up in panic as he was tackled by the man.

The woman was seen pushing the man away, visibly upset with him, before he walked away.
A stunned Murphy later posted the footage to Instagram.

'Entertainment, comedy and magic are NOT contact sports,' he wrote.

'This guest should not have been allowed to enjoy the rest of his cruise.'

Murphy said it took a week for someone to approach him and get a statement and claimed he was told the delay was because there were 'no witnesses'.

Royal Cruises told Daily Mail Australia it could not comment on an ongoing investigation.

Social media users quickly swooped in to defend Murphy, sharing their shock at the footage.

'We were in the audience for this and my jaw nearly hit the floor…. Feel sorry for not only you, but the poor wife and kids who saw the whole thing,' one wrote.

Another added: 'We were in the audience and it was absolutely nuts!

'We assumed he would have been locked in his cabin for the rest of the cruise and I'm fuming if he wasn't!

'You did an amazing job continuing on with the rest of the show. Hope you're doing ok.'

Murphy is a comedy magician and illusionist who has toured around the globe to perform his acts.

3. MAGIC Live 2023
--------------------------------------------
Message by Stan Allen, Las Vegas

Research has shown that the most important thing people look for in a magic show is surprise. We've always known the power of surprise at MAGIC Live, which is why we do not announce presenters or performers prior to the event.

When you check in at Registration, you will receive a guidebook that lists who the speakers are, what they're speaking on, and when. That way, you'll be able to plan your days.

Your nights, however, are for shows! As with all magic shows, these will strive to surprise you, not only with who's on, but also what they're doing.

Each year, we hear from attendees that MAGIC Live makes them feel like they're a kid at their first convention. I think that's largely due to the element of surprise.

Hopefully, you can join us in Las Vegas, August 6-9 - and feel like a kid again!

6. Magic Museum Bellachini - Episode 22

Message by Wittus Witt (Germany)

I am surprised myself that something happens in my museum every week. The number of visitors is increasing and there are always groups who want to book a guided tour through the rooms.

Now that Goethe's original magic box (1830) is back in the Goethe Museum in Düsseldorf, the huge travel and prop case from one of the last Bellachinis, Theodor von Schledorn, will be collected this week. It, too, was on loan. So only the unique oil painting from 1460 is still hanging in the museum, which I will return to Volker Huber's widow at the end of April. By the way, she, Christina, has allowed me to hang a copy of the painting, for which I am very grateful.

Until now, the painting by Hiernoymus Bosch was always considered the oldest oil painting depicting a magician, dating from around 1510.

Parallel to my museum Bellachini, I am lending around 30 exhibits to the Stadtmuseum Münster. From May to September, the museum will present a large exhibition on Alexander Heimbürger. Heimbürger lived in Münster, but in the 19th century he was probably the most famous magician who performed mainly in South America.

I don't even know if I told you that I have been publishing the magazine "Magische Welt" for 22 years. Now I have to work again for that, too. The focus of the new issue is Shawn Farquhar, about whom I will bring a big portrait and also introduce his theatre in particular. Shawn is a wonderful colleague, always friendly and very helpful.

So much for today.

Thank you for your interest.

It's been quite an eventful last few days in Las Vegas! You can't have failed to notice in last week's Magic New Zealand Ezine that Siegfried & Roy's original Jungle Palace home was placed on the market for $3 Million. And unsurprisingly, that news had spread all around Las Vegas and into cities across USA and countries beyond.

The Open House showing of the Jungle Palace drew over 400 Realtors and interested people to view this iconic property. Those of us who were close to Siegfried & Roy, and indeed many others from the world of entertainment, were extremely concerned that the house would sell to a developer who would knock down the Jungle Palace and build several homes on the site.

It is such a unique property and holds a special place in Las Vegas entertainment history, and it would have been unthinkable to see it destroyed.

Within four hours of the Jungle Palace going on the market, it had been sold! There was considerable interest but, as it turns out, we needn't have worried, because the new owner is George Carden, the founder of the George Carden Circus, formerly known as the Carden International Circus.

Not only was George a good friend of Siegfried & Roy, he was, like them, also very close to Mr Tihany, the legendary Hungarian Circus Impressario. A few years ago, George brought his circus to the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas, and I was fortunate to be there with Siegfried & Roy and Mr Tihany to see their exciting show.

Another top Las Vegas performer, and a longtime friend of mine, Wally Eastwood, Host of 'V' The Ultimate Variety Show at the Planet Hollywood Hotel & Casino here in Vegas, just happens to be a cousin of George Carden. Wally, who has been associated with the family circus for a number of years, and is very close to the Carden family, was not only the man who handed the check over for the Jungle Palace on behalf of George Carden, but will be the man on site responsible for its future operations.

There are some exciting plans for the Jungle Palace which I'm sure will be shared in due course, but for now I understand that the priority is to restore the Jungle Palace to its former glory and ensure that there is a true, lasting and deserved legacy for the 'Masters of the Impossible', Siegfried & Roy.

I'm certain that Siegfried & Roy, and Mr Tihany are looking down on George Carden and his family with a huge smile!

It's not an Orben joke!

"Kent! It's Robert Orben on the phone!"

My wife Margot sounded excited, because she knew who Robert Orben was, and she knew that I had been connected to him throughout my performing career. (I have a letter from him dated October 29, 1955.)

Robert Orben had written jokes for some of the greatest comedians in history. He also became the primary speech writer for U.S. President Gerald Ford. I had dozens of his patter books in my library. My first book was his "Encyclopedia of Patter."

Whenever I told a dubious joke, Margot would ask me, "Is that an Orben joke?" And now this comedy legend wanted to talk to her husband?

I hurried to the phone, and began reconnecting to this amazing person. I had written about comedy in my monthly "Marketing Magic" column for The Linking Ring magazine, and of course I had talked about Robert Orben. A lifelong member of the International Brotherhood of Magicians, Orben still enjoyed reading The Linking Ring, and he was calling to thank me for my comments.

The two of us had far more in common than just being magicians who loved comedy. Both of us were active in the Unitarian Church, something that we shared with magician John Booth. Both of us had AMD (Age-Related Macular Degeneration), so we could no longer drive. Both of us enjoyed long happy marriages to our childhood sweethearts.

I reminded him that he had promised me an autographed photo in his 1955 letter. He said that he still didn't have one, and we both laughed.

On February 2, 2023, Bob Orben passed away. It's not a joke.

But I will be telling Orben jokes for the rest of my life.

9. The Lazy Magician! - John Carey #190

Message by John Carey (UK)

I used to love the old cassette prediction that stage magicians used to use years ago. Wanting a version for close up using my mobile phone I put the following together. It uses a force I first saw used by Bill Goldman but I wouldn't be at all surprised if it is very old and hidden
away in the literature.

Place your force card, say 3 of Spades second from top whenever you want to get into this. At home go to your audio record app and record the following transcript:

"Good evening and thank you for helping me. Ask the magician to shuffle the deck. (Retain the force card second from top as you shuffle) Now please take the deck and cut off a third and table it. Then cut off another third and table that next to the first packet. Finally place the remaining
packet next to the other packets. Now gather them up. Great job! (This is of course the classic Jay Ose false cut)

Pick up the deck and start dealing the cards one at a time into a face-up packet. You do that well! Please continue dealing and stop on impulse. Discard the rest of the cards and pick that packet up and turn it face-down. Now to make things fair please lose the top card into the packet. Then lose
the bottom card. Please now take a peek at the top card of that packet (3S) and then shuffle that packet. Then gather up all the other cards and shuffle the deck. Beautifully done! Now place the cards away in their box and hold them between your palms.

So you are just thinking of a card and remember, you shuffled. Imagine a movie screen in front of you. Project the thought of your card onto that screen. I'm seeing a blur. It's black yes? A spade right? Keep naming that card out purely in your mind. The 3 of Spades, the 3 of Spades, the 3 of Spades yes?!!! Thank you for sharing your thoughts and have a wonderful evening!!!"
