3. Mark Leveridge Retires From Magicseen
--------------------------------------------
Message published on Duncan Trillo's Facebook page
Mark
Leveridge Retires From Magicseen. After almost 18 years
as editor
and co-owner of Magicseen Magazine, Mark Leveridge has now
retired from
the role, the current November issue being his final one.
Mark said:
"Nothing lasts forever, and for me personally I have
reached a point in
my life where the most precious commodity in it, is my time.
Fun
though Magicseen has been, I have decided that this is the
right
moment to leave my editor's desk and to withdraw from the
magazine. It's
not a decision that I took lightly, but once having made
the decision,
it feels like the right thing to do." Although no longer
involved with
Magicseen, Mark is not retiring completely from magic and
will continue
to put his energies into Mark Leveridge Magic and his online
club,
E-Club Pro.
Magicseen
will move forward under the stewardship of Phil Shaw, one
of
the founders who started the magazine back in 2005.

6. Magic Museum Bellachini - Episode No.10
-------------------------------------
Message by Wittus Witt (Germany)
Magic
Museum Bellachini - Episode 10
To
keep a museum alive, three factors should be inevitable
1.
the museum needs regular opening hours
2. the museum needs to change the exhibits from time to
time
3. the museum should offer guided tours
I
was also guided by these three points, which an experienced
museum
director told me.
1st
point: opening hours I set the opening hours to four days
a week,
Thursdays through Sundays. Since Hamburg is also an important
tourist
city, it was therefore important for me to be open on Sundays
as well.
The times are from 11:00 in the morning to 17:00 in the
evening. Since
in Hamburg the museums are open on Thursday until 21:00
in the evening,
I have also adopted this time.
2nd
point: changing exhibitions.
Here
there are many themes in magic, according to which I can
always
choose the exhibits. So the first one, the opening exhibition,
is of
course dedicated to the magicians who bore the name Bellachini.
Here in
my collection there are quite a few posters and books that
bear the
name. Also a magic box was named after Bellachini.
I
received a special loan from the local history museum of
the city of
Attendorn. Here is a travel and prop suitcase of Theodor
von Schledorn
(Bellachini No. 4). It is a huge old suitcase as big as
a refrigerator.
You put it down and open it in a vertical position. In the
left part
hang stage shirts. In the right part there are four big
drawers, in
which, unfortunately, there are only a few props: two bottles
for the
changing bottle-trick, several feather flowers and a telescopic
flagpole.
You can see the suitcase in the Magic-Pedia here:
http://www.zauber-pedia.de/index.php?title=Bellachini_-_Theodor_von_Schledorn
3rd point: Guided tours
I
offer guided tours for groups of six or more people. Now
I am curious
about experiences myself.
Stay
curious for the next episode ;-)

7. No Stone Unturned - Paul Stone - Article #85
-------------------------------------
Message by Paul Stone (US)
As
I mentioned in last week's article, I was delighted to be
invited
over the weekend to the Magic Castle in Hollywood by Diana
Zimmerman, to
attend a showing of Dave Baram's award winning documentary
titled 'Ball
& Vase'.
I'm
not going to spoil the movie by revealing the story but
suffice it
to say that it does have a strong magical theme running
throughout,
whilst also dealing with an important issue that impacts
millions of
people around the world.
This
short movie which was written, directed, and produced by
Dave
Baram, stars Austin Pendleton as the main character, who
is superbly
played by this veteran actor.
'Ball
& Vase' has won top awards at several Film Festivals
and is in
line for a possible Oscar nomination, which in my opinion
would be well
deserved.
I
then flew from LAX to London, and I'm writing this in my
hotel in
Sheffield where I am due to spend a couple of days working
on a new
project with my talented tech guy, Tim Smithies.
Tim
also has many other credentials including magician, show
producer
and ukulele performer with his son Jake, in their duo named
'Dead Man's
Uke', headlining festivals across Europe!
And
by a happy coincidence, I was also able to meet up for Dinner
with
another 'magic friend' Steve Short, and his bubbly wife
Carla, who just
happens to hail from my home city of Liverpool.
Steve
is a well-respected magician and writer, having penned successful
books on Alan Shaxon - together with Past Magic Circle President
Scott
Penrose, and on David Nixon, and Johnny Hart.
Steve
is currently working on another book about one of magic's
favourite magicians, also another Past Magic Circle President,
the
Shriek of Araby himself, Ali Bongo. It's sure to be a winner.

8. Tales From The Fantastic Magic Center - #18
--------------------------------------------
Message by Kent Cummins, Director (US)
The
Magic Camp
The
Fantastic Magic Camp in Austin, Texas, is celebrating 30
years of
existence, having helped thousands of children and the adults
who love
them through the innovative use of magic, juggling, and
puppets. (The
camp also teaches clowning, balloon sculpture, ventriloquism,
unicycle,
rola-bola, improvisation, and other areas of variety arts.)
It
all started in early 1993, the year that I turned fifty.
I was
wishing that I had some way to give back for the amazing
life I was
leading, but I didn't have enough time to regularly volunteer,
or enough
money to make a significant donation. My friend Robert Crampton,
who ran
the McGruff the Crime Dog program for the Austin Police
Department, had
an idea.
"Start a summer camp for kids!" he suggested.
"You can take the magic
lessons, juggling programs, and puppetry teaching classes
and put them
all together."
I
said, "That's an interesting idea." He said, "NO!
That's a BUSINESS PLAN!
And by that summer, we had the first four sessions of Magic
Camp in
Austin, Texas.
We started with four one-week sessions, but all the kids
from the first
week wanted to come back the second week...and the third...and
the
fourth! The next year, we changed to four two-week sessions,
and soon we
were filling up the entire summer with multiple sessions
in multiple
locations.
I
didn't put my name on the camp, because I didn't want it
to be about
promoting myself. (I was truly looking for a way to help
others.) But
when the Jewish Community Center, YMCA, and other organizations
started
offering their own "magic camps," I had to protect
our brand. It became,
"The Kent Cummins Magic Camp."
You
can learn more about Fantastic Magic Camp at www.MagicCamp.com.
The
Fantastic Magic Center is dedicated to preserving and sharing
the
art of magic. Check out my free weekly podcast at:

9. A Simple Holdout - John Carey #179
-------------------------------------------
Message by John Carey (UK)
http://www.johncareymagic.co.uk/
Here's
a little utility I've had a lot of fun with of late. It
was
inspired by a lovely idea of Ben Earl's called the Spectator
Shuffle
Holdout, from his magazine Gambit.
Let's
say you have the Aces on top of the deck. Execute a riffle
shuffle
retaining their position and then table the deck. Mention
that sometimes
at the end of a card game late at night, gamblers like to
play cut 'em
high, the person getting the highest card being the winner.
Cut off about a
quarter of the deck and table it face-down to your left.
Ask a spectator
to pick up the balance of the deck and give it a quick overhand
shuffle.
Then
ask them to cut the cards into three face-down packets which
they
table to the right of the first packet. Ask them to turn
each packet
face-up and comment on the random values they have cut to.
Then have
them stack the packets up from right to left and table the
deck
face-down. Your Aces are still on top and they shuffled...

10. News From The Academy Of Illusions
---------------------------------------------
Message by Jay Scott Berry (Australia)
We
hit November at full speed here at the Academy. Another
new website,
more graphics, publicity material, business cards and a
Sizzle Reel in
production! That's in addition to my twelve regular students,
who are
each building their skills and repertoire, from Cups &
Balls, Linking
Rings, Floating Table, Ring & Ribbon, A Question of
Destiny, Coins,
Cards and more.
This
week, my pet effect is producing a beer bottle from an empty
paper
bag. It's built upon the classic Eugene Burger effect in
which the bag
begins flat, is freely shown then casually unfolded. From
inside, you
pull out a shot glass (or two). My challenge to students
is then
reaching into the bag and pulling out a full bottle of beer
or wine.
This can then be opened, and poured. It's a stunning production,
which
is very practical in real world conditions, from Bar to
Stage Magic.
But
the big news of the week is that Joseph Di Pietro took two
Top
Prizes at the Dayton Beach Magic Competition! This was a
goal we set six
months ago. After careful consideration, he decided to focus
on
Strolling and Close-up. My first advice on competitions
is that it's an
opportunity for accelerated personal growth. Having a deadline
to
compete focuses the attention on all aspects of performance,
and publicity.
Joseph
is a well-established working Pro, but this was his first
magic
competition. To his credit, he took on some very difficult
routines,
including my Ring & Ribbon and Ovatio. In a field that
included some top
local and regional talent, he delivered two exceptional
performances and
made an indelible first impression. As I often say, "It
doesn't matter
where you are on the ladder. What matters is always reaching
for the
next rung".

12. Quirky Forces - By Chris Wardle
---------------------------------------------
Message by Chris Wardle (UK)
Having
completely sold out twice, 'Quirky Forces' is reprinted
and now
available again from all major dealers.
Fifty
sneaky, ingenious, offbeat forcing methods from award-winning
originator Chris Wardle
Hardback,
with over 200 pages and 40 graphics (photographs/images/tables)
With
a foreword by Ian Rowland
'Quirky
Forces' contains fifty simple, devious forces over eight
chapters, covering forces with words, images, cards, numbers,
magic
squares and grids, forcing gimmicks, book tests and colours,
together
with complete routines for the working magician.
'Chris
Wardle has the rare knack of devising very good tricks indeed.
His magical inventions are always practical, satisfyingly
ingenious and
slyly deceptive. Chris's creations rely on a clever force
or a way to
apply a familiar forcing principle in a new way. In this
superb new
book, Chris presents a range of his favourite forces and
shows how to
use them to create intriguing effects that are as baffling
as they are
fun to watch' Ian Rowland
'Chris
is a treasure trove of inventive, commercial ideas, and
this book
is no different. I can always tell a good magic book by
the amount of
page corners I have folded down, and I can hand on heart
say I turned
more corners of Quirky Forces down than any other book.'
Preston
'Spooky' Nyman, editor Mazel Magazine
'This
IS the book you are looking for! Chris' fantastic new book
contains FIFTY sneaky and devious forces over eight chapters.
Basically,
if you want to cleanly force anything at all, in any category
whatsoever, Chris has you covered. Highest recommendation
from me, I
consider this book a must-buy.'- Mark Elsdon
''Quirky
Forces' is an ambitious subject and Chris has managed to
present an impressive number of clever ideas and forces.
I was super
impressed.' Andi Gladwin
