3. Free Vanish Magic Magazine - Science & Magic
--------------------------------------------
Message by Paul Romhany - Vanish Magazine (New Zealand)
This
is a very special edition and is free to download.
The
connection between Science and Magic has been a fascination
of mine for many years. You can imagine how excited I was
when a few months ago I got a call from Adam Fleischer.
I knew of Adam from The Magic Manuscript, magic's first
full-color glossy magazine that he launched and edited during
the 1980s.
It
was a trend-setting publication and was part of what inspired
my path in magic and in publishing and editing Vanish. During
that period, Adam, along with America's first FISM Champion
Vito Lupo, also produced The New York Magic Symposium conventions
in the 80s. The New York Magic Symposium was known to set
a new bar for the quality of talent and production for magic
conventions. The event featured some of the last appearances
by the likes of Slydini and Dai Vernon.
Now, 25 years since the last Symposium, Adam and Vito are
launching a new event. The International Magic Symposium
will be an academic conference on how magic inspires science,
technology, teaching, and creativity to be held in Venice,
Italy (dates for the first event have yet to be announced).
While the event will feature a handful of the brightest
minds in magic and a select group of top performers, the
event's attendees will predominantly be scientists, academics,
and technologists.
Driven
by their interest in this area, both Vito and Adam collaborated
with me to produce this special issue of Vanish on how magic
inspires science and creativity. I'm fascinated by the confluence
of magic with science and academia, and I think we have
an issue chock full of articles that will be of interest
to both scientifically inclined magicians as well as magically
intrigued scientists and academics.
This
features contributions from Adam Fleischer, Paul Harris,
Parag Mallick, Stefan Thomke, Jason Randal, Peter Prevos,
John Harris, Jason Leddington, Anthony Barnhart, Richard
Wiseman, Michael Ammar, Mark Setteducati, Jason Latimer,
Jeanette Andrews, Jamy Ian Swiss, Carlo Mariconda, Alberto
Tonolo and Gustav Kuhn.

6. The Magic Word Podcast
-------------------------------------
Message by Scott Wells, M.I.M.C. with Gold Star (US)
This
summer has been a whirlwind of crazy days and nights with
plenty of travel. I have only been in my house for a total
of 10 days since May 2022. Since late May, the Magic Word
Podcast has been in Dallas, Las Vegas, Branson, Atlanta,
Quebec, Colon, Detroit, and Baltimore where I attended magic
conventions and other magic-related events, most of which
all have been reported on The Magic Word Podcast. If you
have not caught up with us, then you are probably far behind
as we have not only released daily reports from F.I.S.M.,
the I.B.M., and other conventions, but we also threw in
episodes with Michael Caveney and Gloria Dea, among others.
This
week we travel to Fort Worth for the Texas Association of
Magicians annual convention. Please join us for updates
from the T.A.O.M. as we plan to consolidate the four day
event down to two episodes: days one and two and days three
and four, since not much is happening on the first and last
days.
Over
the past few months we have also welcomed a few new Friends
of The Magic Word who have donated or pledged to financially
support the podcast. We thank and welcome them to the community
and invite you to consider joining them. Please surf over
to: https://themagicwordpodcast.com where you can get caught
up with what you have missed.
Thanks
for listening.

7. No Stone Unturned - Paul Stone - Article #75
-------------------------------------
Message by Paul Stone (US)
I'm
currently back in UK and enjoying spending time in my home
city of Liverpool. Later on in the week I'll be catching
the train down to the south coast of England to Eastbourne
to lecture at the IBM British Ring Convention.
In
my article last week, I reported the very sad news that
IBM British Ring and International Past President, John
Pye, had passed away.
Thanks
to my old friend Martin Scott-Price who kindly offered to
drive me, I was pleased to be able to attend John's funeral
in the picturesque village of Grindleton, near to the home
of John and his lovely wife Carol.
The
service was held in the quaint old St Ambrose Church where
John had not only worshipped in, but had also on occasions
filled in as the organist.
The
church was packed to capacity with over 100 family and friends
with even more overflowing into the church hall across the
road, a testament to John's great popularity.
Carol
thanked everyone and read a poem by Robert Louis Stevenson
titled 'The man is a success', which seemed entirely appropriate.
Magic
obviously played an important part in John's life, where
he rose from a young hobbyist magician to eventually hold
top positions in virtually every major magic organisation,
including IBM and FISM.
Above
all, John was a family man first and foremost. Always immaculately
dressed, John was a real gentleman. His was a life truly
well lived. RIP.
I
wanted to end this week by singing the praises of Martin
Scott-Price. I've known Martin for over 40 years, we first
met when he won the British Ring Shield Competition and
I won the Comedy Cup.
Martin
is one of the foremost Punch & Judy workers in the UK,
as well as an experienced magician and children's entertainer,
where he is in constant demand.
What
is even more impressive is that, together with his talented
partner Jorge, he owns and runs the Pelham Lodge Hotel in
Blackpool, the town where the world's largest magic convention
takes place every February.
Martin
is literally the head chef and bottle washer! He never stops,
and I'm not sure where he gets his energy from. If you ever
find yourself in Blackpool and need somewhere to stay, Martin
will make you very welcome.
And
whilst you're there, make sure you don't leave without checking
out his fabulous puppet museum which is hidden away in the
basement of the hotel. It is amazing, and one of Blackpool's
best kept secrets!

8. Tales from the Fantastic Magic Center - #8
--------------------------------------------
Message by Kent Cummins, Director
Real
Magic Stores
I
feel sorry for today's young magicians who have never had
the opportunity to just hang out at a bricks-and-mortar
magic store. Yes, there are myriad opportunities to purchase
magic tricks, books, props and memorabilia online, and some
of the suppliers do a good job of providing videos and other
information to assist in the purchase decision.
But
it just isn't the same.
Going
to a magic store was so much more than just purchasing the
latest magic trick. It was an opportunity to immerse yourself
in the culture of magic, learning from the proprietor
and
sharing ideas with the other customers.
First
we looked through the Yellow Pages of the city we were visiting.
There was not usually a listing for "Magic Shops;"
one had to look under "Magician's Supplies." Fortunately,
that was on the same page as "Magicians," so we
got a sense of magic in the city before leaving home.
I had the opportunity to hang out at Lindhorst's Magic Den
in St Louis, Lou Tannen's in New York, Jack Chanin's in
Philadelphia, Ireland's/Magic Inc in Chicago, Al's Magic
Shop in Washington, D.C., Owen Magic Supreme in Southern
California, Abbott's in Colon, Michigan. Thanks to my Army
active duty, I was also able to hang out at Mayette Magie
Moderne in Paris, Zauber König in Munich, Davenports
in London.
I
worked behind the counter of the Checker Fun Shop in Baton
Rouge, Louisiana when I was a student at LSU. I spent many
hours at the Scott Magic Company in Fred Scott Donaldson's
garage in Austin, Texas.
But
my favorite magic store was the Fun 'N Magic Shop in San
Antonio, Texas. I'll tell you more about it and Louis Berkie,
the proprietor, next week.
The
Fantastic Magic Center is dedicated to preserving and sharing
the art of magic. Check out my free weekly podcast at:

9. Cards Of The Clan - John Carey #170
-------------------------------------------
Message by John Carey (UK)
http://www.johncareymagic.co.uk/
Cards
of the Clan is a very direct, seemingly impossible fiveway
matching routine I simply love performing. If you can bottom
deal, you will use this. Remove the Ace through Five of
Clubs and the Ace through Five of Hearts from the deck and
openly arrange them in numerical order,
Aces on top and Fives on the face. Table each packet face-up
in a spread condition, as you point out each group is in
numerical order.
Offer
your participant the free choice of either Clubs or Hearts.
Let's say that they want Clubs. Have them pick up that packet
and turn it facedown. You pick up the Hearts and do the
same. Say to them you will play something called do-as-I-do.
Ask them to copy you and reverse deal the cards into a face-down
packet. As they are doing this you bottom deal four times
and toss the last card on top. There's lots of cover here
and bottom dealing from a small packet isn't that difficult.
Next
ask your helper to pick up their packet and reverse deal
again, taking their cards back to where they started. Then
have them turn the top card of that packet face-up, showing
the Ace of Clubs. "So now we are in a situation where
my cards are out of order compared to yours. But, you see,
cards are very clannish and like to hang out together. Watch!"
Your
left hand takes their face-up card as your right hand takes
the topface-down card off its packet simultaneously. Bring
both hands forward a few inches and drop the left hand's
face-up card as your right hand turns its card face-up beside
it to reveal a match of Aces. Repeat exactly the above with
the remaining four face-up and face-down pairs to conclude
a most startling matching or numerical follow the leader
effect.

11. News From The Academy Of Illusions
---------------------------------------------
Message by Jay Scott Berry (Australia)
A
fanfare and drum roll, pop the champagne and fire off the
confetti cannons, for today we celebrate the one year anniversary
of the Academy! We set out with the goal of using the most
advanced technologies to teach and perform this most ancient
of Arts.
And
what a year it's been: Over 300 Private Training Sessions,
40 ZoomStorming Masterclasses, 50 webcasts of GenoMania,
Spotlight On, Illusioneering, Illuminations and The Golden
Age of Mentoring. We also produced the Key West Hybrid Konvention,
3 Gala Shows and 2 Magic Castle Virtual Shows. Along the
way we produced 15 new Digital Downloads which now brings
our total to over 60, covering a full spectrum of the Art.
As
if that's not enough, to celebrate this auspicious occasion,
we have released 3 more, brand new Downloads covering my
latest routines:
Framed:
A golden purse frame is freely displayed, from which a silver
coin appears, then another, and another, each increasing
in mystery. One is then placed back in and vanishes! Finally
a large 3" silver coin appears! This is pure sleight-of-hand
at its best, with many original moves to maximize the wonder.
Early Reviews: "You are the Master!" - Larry Wright,
"That was great!!!" - Greg Gleason, "Pure
Class!" - John O'Riordan "Superlative!" -
Terry Robinson, "Superb!!!" - Gary Frieden
Wandering:
The runaway hit from my "Art of Wonder" Lecture
and Magic Castle Virtual Show. From empty hands, a solid
wand appears. It is displayed and spun between the fingers,
hand-to-hand. Then, without any false moves, a Solid Brass
Ring appears! What follows is an astounding sequence of
the Ring penetrating on and off the Wand. Finally, the Ring
completely vanishes! All may be examined throughout and
may also be performed with a finger ring. Jay explains each
move, step-by-step, in great detail. Again, the early reviews
are exemplary: "The master at work. So much to learn
from this!" - Roy Eidem, "Excelente manipulación!"
- Gabriel Reyes, "Excellent!!! Bravo!! What makes this
work, aside from your amazing skill, is the look of wonder
you present as each miracle occurs, thereby reinforcing
its impossibility to your audience. Kudos to YOU!!!"
- Gary Frieden
Ovatio:
The purity and simplicity of this routine is what makes
it so miraculous. A single playing card is displayed, hand
to hand. From behind it, a large sponge ball appears. It
is then clearly shown and, in the gentle wave of the card,
disappears. This is repeated a number of times, in different
ways, all while showing the hands otherwise empty. The card
and ball may be examined at any time and the effect can
even be performed with your business card! The entire routine
is fully explained, step-by-step. When it comes to creating
maximum wonder from minimum props, Ovatio can't be beat.
As
with all of our Downloads, these are state-of-the-art, Full
HD, Multicam productions. You can check out the performances
on our Facebook Page and on the Magic Ladder Website. And,
for the next week, we are offering a "Buy 2 Get One
Free" on these new Downloads: https://magicladder.net/product-category/jay-scott-berry/general-magic-jay-scott-berry/
So
we look ahead to the next year, with a continued commitment
to excellence. We stand upon the shoulders of giants and
are, therefore, bound by honor to see farther. Excelsior!

12. Magical Women With Connie Boyd
-------------------------------------------
Message by Connie Boyd (USA)
Rachel
Wax represents a new generation of female magicians who
are carving and securing their place into magic's "it"
scene. Gloria Steinem called her, "the most fan-XXXing-tastic
magician" when she when she performed at the exclusive
Camp Female Founders Fund hosted by Anu Duggal in the Hamptons
this past June.
Rachel
is featured cover girl in Vanish International Magic Magazine,
September 2022. http://www.vanishmagic.com.
We
are including an interview produced by QUARTZ about Rachel's
Magic: Good magic feels like it's all up to chance-the right
card happens to be in the right place at the right time.
All of that is, of course, an illusion, achieved through
hours and hours of practice.
Rachel
Wax works in fashion by day and magic by night in Speakeasy
Magick at The McKittrick Hotel in New York. In this second
episode of our member-exclusive show risk, she tells us
that the biggest risk most magicians face is not messing
up a single trick, but rather losing control of the audience.

has left a legacy of tricks and routines that have become
classics amongst magicians around the world.
He
was my friend and I will miss him.
