--------------------------------------------
Message by Joan Caesar (Canada)
One
of the things I always try to do in a new city is book a
hop on hop off tour. It's a wonderful way to get an overview
of a place. You can look of the internet for a tour of Quebec,
I highly recommend this. One tour suggests: Explore the
best of Quebec City on this narrated, hop-on hop-off, double-decker
bus tour. Visit many of Quebec City's top attractions -
like Old Québec, Fortifications of Québec,
Quartier Saint-Jean-Baptiste, Place Royale, Vieux-Port de
Québec, to name just a few. Select the 1-day pass,
then board at any of the stops and get to know this UNESCO
World Heritage Site in customized fashion, with audio commentary
in 10 different languages.
1-day
Quebec City hop-on hop-off sightseeing tour See top attractions
in UNESCO-listed Old Quebec, including the Citadel of Quebec
and Notre-Dame-des-Victoires church Capture unobstructed
views from the open-top, double-decker bus Learn about Quebec
City's sights and history on this audio tour, available
in 10 languages.
Look
on the Internet for tours.

3. No Stone Unturned - Paul Stone - Article #66

Message by Paul Stone (US)
A
few weeks ago, in my article I wrote about Richard Faverty,
who owns Beckett Studios here in Las Vegas. In case you
didn't see the article, Richard has had an amazing career,
or rather two amazing careers!
One
in the world of bubbles, and the other as a leading photographer,
initially working for all the major newspapers and magazines,
and since 2001, running his own studio, where he has pretty
much cornered the entertainment market, and his photos have
adorned numerous billboards up and down the Las Vegas Strip.
Headlining
magicians here in Vegas in particular, owe him a special
debt of gratitude, as he has produced some incredible promo
photos for amongst others, Mac King, Mike Hammer, Amazing
Johnathan, Johnny Thompson, and Jason Byrne to name a few.
The
reason I mention this is because I wonder how many magicians
don't have good promo photos? In my case, I have been using
the same photo forever. In fact, it was shot twenty years
ago, and whilst I wish I still looked that young, sadly
'tempus fugits' (that's Latin for time passes!), and I definitely
don't look like my photo anymore!
I
needed to send some photos out for a couple of speaking
engagements I have been booked for and so, yes, I went to
Richard's studio and now finally, I have a couple of up-to-date
photos that I can send out without feeling that I'm somehow
misrepresenting myself!
If
this resonates with you, maybe it's time to do the same.
And I hope you can find a photographer as good as Richard,
he's the best!
As
I was going through more of my collection of posters and
photos this week, I came across some great material on three
more magic 'greats'- The Amusing & Confusing Johnny
Paul, The inimitable Jimmy Grippo, and Lefty's right hand
man
(or was it his left hand?) Jay Marshall.
Johnny,
who not only performed at the Showboat Hotel & Casino
but was also their Entertainment Director, was a wonderful
performer, specializing in entertaining in Hospitality Suites.
He
was a very modest man and always extended a warm welcome
to any visiting magicians. I was lucky enough to stay at
his lovely home on several occasions and he and his wife
Winnie, were the best of hosts.
I
only met Jimmy Grippo towards the end of his life, and his
stamping ground was Caesar's Palace. He was still very active
even at 90 years of age! He was another Vegas legend.
And
then there was Jay Marshall! Beloved by magicians around
the world, his career was incredible, from the Ed Sullivan
Show to the London Palladium, Jay had done it all. And he
was a fount of knowledge too. Without doubt, 'One of the
better, cheaper acts'.
From
times past to the present day, and Jen Kramer. If you don't
know her name, she is one of the very few successful female
magicians, and headlines her own show at the Westgate Resort
& Casino, the old Las Vegas Hilton Hotel, just off the
Las Vegas Strip.
She
is an excellent magician, and her show is fast moving and
includes a variety of magic from card tricks to illusions,
and is the perfect family show.
Jen
has just racked up her 500th performance at the Westgate,
which is no mean feat. Many congratulations to her! If you
are visiting Vegas, go and support her.

Message by John Carey (UK)

Back
in the day when I lived in London, my friend Danny and I
used to get bought a few beers with the following mental
effect. Let me give you an outline of the script:
"Danny,
please walk to the other end of the bar and turn away. Peter,
here's a dice I brought back from a holiday in Las Vegas.
Please roll it a few times to make sure it's legit. Ok,
now roll it one last time and we will let chance take its
course. (He rolls say a four). Ok, hold that dice in your
closed hand with that number uppermost. Please call Danny
back over. Danny, Peter rolled a dice and is thinking of
the number he rolled. It could have landed on five, two,
four, three, six or one. Peter, please project your thoughts
to Danny. Visualize two minutes ago when you rolled a dice
and it landed on a random number. Danny, tell Peter what
number he is thinking of? Impossible!"
The
method couldn't be easier. Every time we worked this psychic
stunt I always called out the rolled number third as I stated
how the dice could have landed on xyz etc. In our example
four. That's all there is to it. The easiest code in the
world. You could train a friend in a minute to do this anytime
and anywhere. Naturally you can use cards, images, words
etc. Let it go and be creative.
Have
Fun!

9. News From The Academy Of Illusions
--------------------------------------------
Message by Jay Scott Berry (Australia)
The
well-known saying is that "When the student is ready,
the master will appear." Lesser known is the second
part, "When the master is ready, the student will appear."
I've understood the first part, since meeting Johnny Thompson,
when I was 16 years old. Having spent many years before
that immersed in magic, music and theater, I must have been
ready. Johnny sensed it as well, taking me under his wing,
and ultimately pointing me to Hollywood and The Magic Castle.
From there, I watched and learned from many masters, carefully
assimilating the best from each. These included Shimada,
Richard Ross, Slydini, Albert Goshman, Patrick Page, Pavel,
Ali Bongo, Paul Daniels and Channing Pollock.
My
first student was quite an auspicious one, who often came
into Hollywood Magic. He was internationally renowned, but
not as a magician. However, he was a keen amateur, who had
a surprising, and unexpected, childlike sense of wonder.
That man was Muhammad Ali. There was a connection from the
moment we met. I showed him my early Ring & Ribbon moves
and he was fascinated with the simplicity of the sleight
of hand. I was equally fascinated to meet the man who was
a world champion fighter, with a heart of gold. Over a year
or so, he would come into the shop and we would take 10
or 15 minutes going over basic sleights, TT moves and more.
It was total serendipity but, looking back, I learned as
much from him as I taught.
Fast
forward 40 years and I now have a dozen or so private students,
all around the world. This is only possible due to the incredible
technology we now have at our fingertips. The funny thing
is that most of them, I've never even met in person, and
may never meet! Each is at a different stage of development,
from beginners to experts, with different goals. This week,
I will shine the spotlight on one, in particular.
Dale
Trueman attended my first ZoomStorming Series last October
and followed up for private Coaching Sessions. As always,
I began with a discussion that goes from past to present
and future. He was a talented amateur with a solid understanding
of the Art. He also had a few different characters in development
with a dream of turning pro. Over the next few months, we
worked on everything from sleight of hand and Topit skills
to character and script development. At the beginning of
this year, we set some clear goals. One of which was to
have him perform at the annual Melbourne Magic Festival,
which takes place in July. In order to achieve this, we
prepared his website and promotional material as well as
making the submission for the Festival. The first accomplishment
was in March, when he was booked as one of the headline
performers. That's all the business side. What's equally
important is the show he will present.
True
originality in magic is a rare thing. To skillfully blend
magic, music and comedy into an original theatrical production
is rarer still. Dale Trueman has managed all of these with
his new show, "The Life of Davo". The curtains
open on our hapless hero, Davo, in his deceased grandfather's
garage. What transpires in the next 50 minutes is pure comic
genius, the likes of which I've rarely seen. It's wacky
and wondrous, surprising and offbeat, with world class magic
deftly woven throughout. But the best part is that it's
a feel good, Cinderella story, with a happy ending.
As
I always say, "Excellence never happens by accident".
The show that Dale will premiere next week in Melbourne
is the end result of hundreds of hours of hard work, dedication,
brainstorming and rehearsal. And to say that I'm proud of
him would be an understatement. What's most amazing, however,
is the creative synergy that it took to reach this goal.
Many of the key ideas, which are the nuances of the story,
could never have come about without that synergy; where
the end result is greater than the sum of its parts. And
now I understand why the saying about master and student
goes both ways. The real magic, it seems, cannot be achieved,
until both are truly ready.
