3. Penn And Teller Act Disappeared
--------------------------------------------

The Sydney Morning Herald

Penn and Teller shipped their popular magic show to Australia. Then it disappeared.

What do you do when you've planned a stage show that has to be packed and shipped across the world for your first Australian tour, only to discover it won't arrive for your first performance?

If you take a leaf from magic and comedy duo Penn and Teller's book, you simply get back to work. After all, a challenge is what Penn and Teller like best.

"I sat down with our stage manager, and our whole team, and came up with a show that I love," the usually silent partner, Teller - it's just Teller, legally - explains on a call from Las Vegas.
After 47 years of working together, Teller and Penn Jillette have an impressive and extensive body of work to draw on, but there's also new material coming for Australian audiences. Initially a setback, the shipping problem soon became a cause for creativity.

"Australia is a combination of really new stuff, and really, really old stuff, and it's stuff we felt like doing. I know it's going to be a blast for us to do. I'm hopeful the audience will like it," Jillette says.

4. No Stone Unturned - Paul Stone - Article #63

Message by Paul Stone (US)

I was chatting to my friend Fielding West last week and he was getting ready join Lance Burton for another Lance Burton & Friends Show on the road.

This was going to be a show with a difference and probably a first for Lance. It was at an open air outdoor venue near Palm Springs, in what appeared to be a fairground setting with rides all around.

I'll be interested to hear how it went, but knowing Lance, he'll probably have sailed through it with his usual aplomb. Fielding's 'Bob the Bird' might have found it more difficult!

A footnote from 'Magic Live' that I forgot to mention. The final Gala Show at the Orleans Hotel & Casino was excellently emceed by Kalin & Jinger. This was certainly a departure from the norm, and they played off each other well. They both did a nice job and Jinger's delivery and poise on stage was particularly impressive. She is, and always has been, a class act.

Speaking of class acts, I've just returned from a couple of days in L.A. where I heard from the evergreen Diana Zimmerman, about a new documentary being filmed about the Magic Castle. When I have more details I'll share them with you, but it sounded like a terrific idea.

I was delighted to get a message from my old friend Scott Wells that he was in town for a couple of weeks to see shows, visit friends and record a few interviews for his excellent podcast. Scott has his finger on the pulse of magic and knows all the news, so I'm looking forward to catching up with him.

The anticipation is definitely building for David Blaine's new show at the Resorts World Hotel & Casino here on the Las Vegas Strip. His residency starts at the end of September.

Vintage Female Magician Claudine at Home with her Doves from 1959 FUN clip of British magician Claudine (Claudine Boyer Chandler 1935-2015) Did you enjoy this upload?

Original Footage Credit: British Path @British Pathé

Information Reference: Mantiks the Magician @Mant?ks?z Mant?k

Known as "The Magical Claudine," the daughter of magician Claude Chandler. Born on June 23, 1935, Claudine's entire life was connected to magic, and perhaps inevitably, show business provided her only career.

She stated that she never read any magic books, or joined magic societies and that her father taught her all the magic she needed. He developed her special routines and even shared his Abracadabra Magazine with her!

Claudine had a very wide general training in elocution, theatre and dancing. She became, at the age of 15, one of the Tiller Girl dancers. Her next assignment was within a ballet in Paris, returning to England in summer seasons, touring reviews and also in several ice shows.

"Holiday on Ice" included Claudine as part of a comedy animal act. It was within this animal act, that Claudine first introduced her conjuring. Her magic soon assumed the major role of the act and tricks were introduced.

In her initial silent act, Claudine was assisted by Trevor Hill playing Old Stevens, the Butler. Claudine wore immaculate tails and tights, top hat, silver cloak and white gloves, and this act toured from 1958 to 1960. Claudine was accepted 'sight unseen' on the Empress No. 1 Tour, purely due to her father's name and high reputation. Claudine's opening date was, in fact, at the prestigious Finsbury Park Empire.

In 1961 Claudine became the first live entertainer to work in Kuwait, where her visible legs caused consternation! It was only because she was able to convince authority that her legs were, in fact, absolutely covered by opaque tights UNDER her fishnets that she was allowed to continue. Needless to say, this made her act an even greater success in the part of the world where a woman's legs are very safely hidden beneath flowing skirts and kept strictly for private viewing!

During the period 1960-63 a patter caberet act was developed, with Trevor Hill acting as an assistant, but no longer in the butler role. The first silent act was produced solely for stage. Realizing that in cabaret, patter gave more interaction with the audience, an act was devised containing humorous situation comedy, spoken with an intriguing French accent. To quote the publicity material was: "Bubbling with sex appeal, color and fun".

From 1964 until she retired in 1971, Claudine performed a solo act, mainly for cabaret, with audience participation, presented in six languages.

Included in the act were various tricks with doves and two dogs. Claudine strongly held views on the care of animals and that always influenced her choice of effects. She believed that animals should always appear - never vanish. With a vanish an audience member may wonder if the animal is injured in the process because they never see it again and they fear the worst.

Claudine married Chester Harriot, a well-known singer, and retired in 1971 to enjoy family life.

8. Transposia - John Carey #162
-------------------------------------------
Message by John Carey (UK)

Transposia is a very direct transposition of the Aces and Jacks, which again highlights the power of a bottom deal. Take out the Aces and Jacks and place them face-up in two tabled groups. Leave the deck faceup on the table. Pick up the Jacks and flip them face-down into left-hand
dealers-grip. Then pick up the Aces and flip those face-down on top of the Jacks.

"Let's isolate the Aces in the deck." Apparently deal the Aces face-down onto the face of the tabled deck. Actually though bottom deal the Jacks and ask your helper to cut the deck, complete the cut and then turn it face-down.

"Watch closely now. The fastest trick in the world!" Make a magical gesture over the packet in the left hand and then using the right hand ribbon spread the deck widely, showing a startling appearance of the face-up Jacks. A moment later, execute a through-the-fist flourish of the packet in the left hand to show the Aces and the transposition is complete.

10. News From The Academy Of Illusions

Message by Jay Scott Berry (Australia)

I vividly recall, as a teenager, first hearing about The Magic Castle. While living in Reno, Johnny Thompson told me about the Castle and The Academy of Magical Arts. He also suggested that I move to Hollywood and audition for their Junior Program. That's how my amazing journey began.

Upon arriving in LA, I got a job at Hollywood Magic, not far from the Castle, which was the main gathering point for magicians. Once there, I worked alongside some who inspired me, like Jonathan Neal and Earl Nelson and met many others, including Pat Page, Max Maven and even a young David Kotkin, who we know now as Copperfield. Jules Lenier also encouraged me to join the Junior Members, in what is now looked back on as the group's "Golden Era". Many of today's top pros, like Mark Kalin, Kevin James and Christopher Hart, came out of the program in the late '70's.

From there, I went on to become the youngest member to ever perform a week at the Castle, which opened the doors to so many other young magicians. In 1982, I was chosen to represent the Castle at the FISM Competition in Switzerland. That was the springboard to my career in Europe and on to international acclaim. So, I am always cognizant of the debt I owe to Bill Larsen, Diana Zimmerman, Peter Pit and many others who were integral in my rise to stardom.

40 years later, I have returned to the Castle many times, as a performer, in all 4 theatres. and as a lecturer. Mark Wilson even made me an official professor of the Magic Castle University. Now, I am honoured to be passing on all that knowledge, to my many students, via Zoom.

This Saturday, I am honoured to be producing my second Magic Castle Virtual Show, with co-stars, Greg Gleason and David Goldrake. Just as the Castle is "The Carnegie Hall of Magic", these have become the world's premiere virtual shows. The good thing is that they are free to all members and even non-members can attend for a small entrance fee. The shows starts at 7pm this Saturday, June 11th and there will be a Meet & Greet afterwards. Tickets and details can be found at: www.MagicCastle.com
