2. FISM Update - Shopping in Old Quebec
--------------------------------------------
Message by Joan Caesar (Canada)

Shopping in Old Quebec
Unlike many women, I have never liked shopping to the point that I dread the thought. However there are so many interesting curio shops in Old Quebec, I just might try it. Perhaps the best area, certainly the most visited, is Petit Champlain, at the base of the funicular (a rail down the mountainside), in Lower Town. The oldest commercial street in North America, it is also very well decorated with lights. This street boasts many nice shops and cafes. In Upper Town, Rue St. Jean is the place to go. It has many shops, restaurants and bars to pop in and out of.

Finally, if you want to continue shopping, there are malls in St. Foy that are easy to reach by cab. The biggest is Place Laurier. It connects to two other adjoining malls so there's no need to venture outdoors in the heat of the summer. It has many standard mall shops, but also a few you won't find at home.

The following is just a small sample of the many shopping possibilities in this town.

Magasin Général P L Blouin, 1196 Rue Saint-Jean

This is a typical gift shop that you find in any tourist destination, but selling souvenirs of Quebec including maple syrup and novelty "I love Québec" or "Tabarnak" t-shirts. You will also find things such as postcards, key rings, magnets, posters, hats, stickers, pins, mugs, plates and the provincial "Je me souviens" licence plates.

Galerie d'art Inuit, 35, rue Saint-Louis

For over 40 years, the gallery has sold and promoted Canadian Inuit painting and sculptures from northern Quebec. The unique pieces are carefully selected and feature a varied range of forms, subjects and materials. Also included are dream catchers, moccasins, First Nations music, and jewelry from Native artists.

Boutique Artisans 30 côte de la Fabrique

Recommended by the New York Times as the nicest store in the old Québec, it features gifts, art and fashion made in Canada. It has been run by the same family for three generations.

Corporation des artisans de l'Île d'Orléans, 1445, chemin Royal

The Corporation des artistes de l'Île d'Orléans is run by a group artisans who specialized in several types of arts and crafts on Île d'Orléans. The artisans hold exhibits of their artwork and offer it for sale to tourists visiting the island. Showings and sales occur every day from May 1 to October 20.

4. No Stone Unturned - Paul Stone - Article #61

Message by Paul Stone (US)

The latest hot news here in Las Vegas is the official announcement today that David Blaine will be taking up a residency at Resorts World Hotel & Casino. 'David Blaine Live' will hit the Strip on September 30. It proves once more that Las Vegas is still the magic capital of the world. No matter what style of magic you prefer, you've got it all here in Vegas.

Having stayed away from the Las Strip for nearly two years, I've found myself down there three times in the past week! Last night I was invited to, and attended, the opening VIP & Press Night for 'Rouge', at the Stratosphere Hotel & Casino.

Described as the 'sexiest show in Las Vegas', it would be difficult to disagree, but unlike many other topless shows, this really was a very professional production with fabulous costumes, great lighting and stage sets and most surprisingly of all, several excellent and talented speciality performers. Whilst it obviously isn't a family show, it was extremely impressive.

Also in town for a few days is the outstanding ventriloquist, Paul Zerdin. I've known Paul for over 25 years, and he has appeared in several corporate shows for me and also a number of West End stage shows including a few at the world famous London Palladium Theatre.

Speaking of the London Palladium, Paul is a seasoned and popular Pantomime performer - a 'must see' Christmas entertainment in UK - and has appeared in the most lavish of all pantomimes at the London Palladium for the last 6 years, and is once again booked to star in this year's show. Quite an achievement!

Paul of course, won America's Got Talent in 2015, and starred in his own show at the Planet Hollywood Hotel & Casino, and is in town for meetings that might see him appearing back on the Las Vegas Strip before too long. It would be great if it happens as Paul is terrific entertainer and a real talent.

I am writing this on the final day of 'Magic Live!' at the Orleans Hotel & Casino. I was unfortunately out of town until today so wasn't able to attend, but I did manage to meet up for breakfast today with some old friends, Seth Kramer and Shep Hyken, and was introduced to Jonathan Levitt, another very talented performer.

And I also managed to chat with Mike Sullivan, over from London for the convention, who was giving me the latest info on the new stage show he is shortly to perform in with the legend that is Wayne Dobson. I understand that they will also be appearing in the Gala Show at the IBM British Ring Convention in Eastbourne at the beginning of September.

As I'll also be back doing a lecture at that Convention, I'm really looking forward to seeing their show. And I've always had a soft spot for Eastbourne.

Exclusive Magic History documenting 99 year old, living legend, magic star, vintage Hollywood actress Gloria Dea at her home in Las Vegas. We are amazed, love and honored to feature this talk about a second meeting with Gloria Dea. In this upload I present Gloria with her own copy of the Vanish Magic Magazine and feature article.

Gloria Dea holds the honor and credit as the FIRST magician to appear on the Las Vegas Strip and that occurred at the El Rancho in 1941. It was a shocker to the magic community to discover that a young female magician was a vintage Las Vegas Magic FIRST and that discovery is thanks to Lance Rich.

Gloria Dea was a magic child prodigy STAR, who was taught by her father Leo Metzner. Gloria's entertainment career spanned decades and beyond magic. After her appearance in Las Vegas she became a Hollywood Star in diverse roles including magic performances. Her vintage Hollywood actress, acting credits include co-starring with Buster Crabbe in King of the Congo pre-film serial series and appearing in "the Prodical." In 1931 she starred as a magician in a "soundie" called "Concertina Man".

7. News From The Academy Of Illusions

Message by Jay Scott Berry (Australia)

Being a pioneer always comes with some risk, and breaking new ground is never easy. But there's also risk in complacency and endless repetition of the same old things. Channing always spoke about never losing that hunger; the fire in the belly that drives us, pushing us ever onwards. And, of course, without taking the leap, we never know what we might have discovered.

And so it was with the sold out Key West Konvention. On Saturday, after 10 weeks of planning and painstaking preparation, the game was afoot. With presenters and attendees from all corners of the globe, we streamed to Zoom and on to YouTube. It all began with a look back at the history of Bar Magic, starting with the legendary Ivanhoe in Chicago and Frank Everhart, Sr. Max Howard shared stories and memories of Dai Vernon, Johnny Platt, Jay Marshall and many other premier performers of the day. This led straight into the performance and masterclass on "Sam the Bellhop" with Greg Gleason, Geno DeVille, Doc Eason and Frank Everhart.

Over the next 14 hours, which wrapped up Sunday evening, so much priceless info was shared by our all-star cast and attendees. Michael Ammar and Doc Eason gave a Masterclass on "The Chicago Opener". Max Howard shared pearls of wisdom on the performance, character and acting side of magic. To break things up, John Johnson took us on a walking tour around Key West, pointing out popular tourist attractions and where the legendary Palladin Magic Shop once stood. Austin Moody performed his signature Coins & Coasters routine, ideally suited to the occasion.

All the while, I played host, shared historic photos, ran the Zoom tech, and even played "Margaritaville" on the guitar, just for the occasion. We all congratulated Frank Everhart on the 25th anniversary of his Magic Bar. Doc Eason then delivered the grand finale, talking about his life and career as a Bar Magician in Aspen and Snowmass Colorado. In doing so, he gave us a sneak preview of his upcoming book. The entire event was punctuated by questions, stories and suggestions from world renowned attendees, like Marc DeSouza. The icing on the cake is that we were able to record it.

All in all, in spite of a few challenges, the event was an unqualified success, and a great learning experience. As a bonus, the best parts were improvised, spontaneous and totally unplanned. I wager that those, alone, made the entire event a risk worth taking. For it is only in breaking new ground that the pioneer clears the way for others to follow. I always tell my students that, "It won't be easy, but it will be worth it. After all, adventure and easy don't come in the same package." So, I extend a heartfelt thank you to all presenters and attendees, whose time and efforts went into making this an unforgettable weekend of wonder.

8. Aces From The Cellar - John Carey #160

Here's a solid production effect that I put together to give myself a good practice vehicle for a bottom deal. Secretly cull or pre-set the Aces to the bottom of the deck. Execute a riffle shuffle retaining your slug of Aces on the bottom.

"Tonight we will play a little card game involving numbers you guys will think of. George, call out a number between one and ten?" Let's say he says four. Deal three cards face-up into a packet on the table and then bottom deal an Ace face-down away from this packet. Lose the other dealt cards into the middle of the deck.

"Gary, now your turn. Call out a number too please?" We shall say that he says seven. Just as previously, deal six cards face-up into a packet and then bottom deal an Ace face-down on top of the other face-down Ace. "Drew, your turn now. Call out a number?" Let's say he says eight. Deal seven face-up cards into a packet and bottom deal an Ace face-down on eight and place it on top of the other two face-down Aces.

"Let's combine your numbers to arrive at one more card." In our example the total will be 19. Comment on how they truly had free choices of numbers. Deal 18 cards face-up and then bottom deal the remaining Ace face-down on top of the other previously dealt face-down cards.

"I'm going to have each of you mix that packet and take a card out blind and place it in front of you until there's only one card left which I will get." Let them each do this until you each have a card in front of you. " The highest card is the winner. On the count of three we all turn our cards over. Oh my word. It's a tie!!!"

The Aces are revealed and everyone laughs, gets drunk and goes home happy! Credit to Bill Malone for the 'it's a tie' gambit.
