Message by Scott Wells, M.I.M.C. with Gold Star
Last
week we took a virtual trip to the "paradise"
island of Mauritius to visit with French magician, William
Watt. He decided to take a big chance and leave a lucrative
career in magic behind in Paris and relocate to a tiny island
off the coast of South Africa where he rapidly became the
"big fish" on the island. He has a ton of great
advice and solid opinions on performing that I think every
magician will learn from and enjoy. You can listen to this
episode #679 wherever you get your podcasts. But for more
content, please visit: https://www.themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/679-william-watt
This
week we stay a little closer to home by visit the "Fantastic
Magic Center" in Austin, Texas, that is the personal
magic museum of Kent Cummins. Kent has been performing magic
for over seven decades and has a ton of stories and experiences
to share. This week, he shares several of his observations
and advice from over those years in the podcast. You can
view some photos of his museum plus listen to the podcast
at: https://www.themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/680-kent-cummins
MAGIC
Live! begins on May 15 and runs through May 18. The Magic
Word Podcast will be there and posting daily updates from
the convention floor with conversations with organizers,
talent, registrants, dealers and others. Come back every
day for these reports as they are posted on The Magic Word
Podcast. And of course, you can always keep updated by subscribing
to the podletter so you know what's happening and whose
doing it. You can subscribe to the podletter through our
website.
One
last thing before we go, during this past week, we hosted
a one hour virtual lecture by Bill Wisch. It was posted
on our Facebook page as well as YouTube. It was the official
launch of his new, two volume DVD set on Slydini's Silks
that included explanations of four of Slydini's effects.
If you act quickly, you will be able to get a discount on
the DVD set by following the link in the video. You can
view the lecture on YouTube at: https://youtu.be/dW8QyVJwPgw

4. No Stone Unturned - Paul Stone - Article #59
--------------------------------------------
Message by Paul Stone (US)
I've
mentioned before in my articles that I have lunch at least
once a month here in Las Vegas with a few good magic friends
including Bill Smith, Fielding West, Lupe Nielsen, and Charlie
& Sherry Frye. This started out as a weekly event for
Peter Reveen, and then became lunch with Lance Burton, before
he moved out of town to become a gentleman farmer!
Someone
else who also regularly joins us is Richard Faverty. Whilst
his name may not be as Internationally known as the others
in this group, Richard has more than left his mark on the
magic community, particularly in Las Vegas, as the photographer
to the Stars.
He
owns Beckett Studios which he opened in 2001, and he has
been in constant demand ever since. Many of the most iconic
promotional photos adorning the billboards around the Las
Vegas Strip were shot by Richard.
Richard
also was responsible for over a dozen Front Cover photos
for Stan Allen's 'Magic Magazine'.
I
called Richard on the phone to get some background on his
life and what he told me in half an hour could fill a 200
page book! He literally didn't draw for breath, and his
life story is both fascinating and captivating. So, here's
a very brief overview!
All
Richard ever wanted to do was become a photographer, and
he became a freelance photo-journalist in 1970's in Chicago.
He worked for all the major magazines and newspapers including
Time Life, Forbes, Sports Illustrated, NY Times and the
Washington Post.
Through
a friend Richard found out that selling photos to the National
Enquirer paid twice as much and he found a niche as the
'freak specialist', and soon became the 'go to guy' for
photos of the tallest, the fattest, Siamese twins, UFO sightings
and psychics.
But
very unexpectedly his career path changed when in 1980 he
was sent to Fort Wayne, Indiana to cover an attempt by a
'bubble expert' named Eiffel Plasterer to encase a person
inside a soap bubble.
The
attempt ended in failure with Plasterer claiming the challenge
was impossible. But Richard was intrigued and decided then
and there that he would find a way to do it.
And
succeed he did, managing to encase his young three year
old daughter inside a huge bubble. Not only that, Richard
then sold the photographs of this stunt to the National
Enquirer.
As
a result of this, Richard found himself inundated with requests
from around the globe to photograph all types of objects
inside a bubble.
In
1985 he was invited to appear on a Japanese TV Show doing
a 5 minute bubble act. Although Richard didn't have an act,
the lure of $5000 plus first class travel was too good to
turn down, so he put together a 'History of Bubble Blowing'
act featuring various inventions including a remote controlled
bubble blowing robot.
A
booking agent in Las Vegas saw the show and started offering
Richard regular gigs and one of them was in Israel working
with the Fercos Brothers, who performed an act in the style
of Siegfried & Roy in a basketball stadium in front
of 8,000 fans.
Richard
graphically remembers the first show. He had never before
run the act and, just as he was announced, they had a massive
power failure. Instead of all his ingenious visual effects,
there was just one single light bulb above him, and dead
silence!
The
show producer shouted to him 'just make some f
bubbles!' so Richard made a series of gigantic bubbles which,
by sheer chance, when lit by the single bulb, looked amazing,
and Richard received a standing ovation from the entire
audience!
This
was Richard's entrée into the world of magicians,
and he was now well and truly hooked. His bubble act, now
lasting 8 minutes, took him around the world, and in the
process onto several major TV shows like 'What's My Line',
Johnny Carson Show, Letterman and many others in South America
and Europe.
He
1986 Richard released 'Professor Bubbles Official Handbook,
and the Swiss Army Bubble Wand, which he licensed, and 32
million were sold over a 19 year period. Not bad for a photographer!
Amongst
other show credits, Richard appeared in Jeff Kutash's legendary
show 'Splash' for a year at the Riviera Hotel & Casino.
Richard
is now regarded as the number one entertainment photographer
in Las Vegas and his client list is impressive. Many of
the world's top magicians have benefitted from his originality
and creative images.
And
I nearly forgot, Richard is one of the most modest and friendly
guys you'll ever meet!

7. News From The Academy Of Illusions
--------------------------------------------
Message by Jay Scott Berry (Australia)
Two
months ago, Frank Everhart was my guest for the "Spotlight
On" program. He spoke freely about growing up with
Magic, his legendary father, their first trip to Key West
and the beginnings of Frank's Magic Bar. He also mentioned
that the Bar's 25th anniversary was coming up in mid-May.
When you know the history of Frank Everhart Senior, dating
back to the legendary Ivanhoe Bar in Chicago, you begin
to understand that this is one of the great success stories
in modern magic.
After
the interview, I was struck with the idea to create a Hybrid
Convention to celebrate this auspicious anniversary. Not
as a profit making venture, mind you, but simply in service
of the Art. For this, I've managed to pull together a team
of masters, grandmasters and legends, all of whom have some
link to Frank and Bar Magic. These include Doc Eason, Michael
Ammar, Max Howard, Greg Gleason, Geno DeVille and John Johnson.
We now have a full schedule of Virtual and Live Events on
May 15th starting at 2pm Key West Time (EST). We will also
have Preview Events on Saturday the 14th, starting at 3pm.
All details can be found on the Key West Konvention FB Page:
www.facebook.com/KeyWestKonvention
But
the BIG NEWS is that all of the Stars are waiving their
fees in order to make this a FREE Konvention! Please note
that there is limited space on the Zoom Meeting. Hop on
over to www.DeVilleMagic.net to reserve your spot. We will
also be Streaming to Youtube: www.Youtube.com/JayScottBerry
In
other news, the 27th Episode of GenoMania became a de facto
test run for the Konvention. Instead of the usual Stream
to FB, attendees were invited onto Zoom, and I also streamed
the program to Youtube. After addressing a few tech issues,
we were off and running! Besides outlining the upcoming
weekend's events, we talked about having a Commando Cruise
Ship Act in case luggage doesn't arrive. Geno shared Michael
Finney's version of "Professor's Nightmare". We
wrapped it all up with another lighthearted rant in "What
Gets Your Goat?"
Both
of last weekend's S.A.M. Online events were very well attended.
I was honored to be part of the Doug Henning 75th Birthday
Celebration and then present a mini Masterclass on the Sanada
Gimmick for the V1.2 Assembly. A big thank you to the team
of producers and attendees. Bravo!
As
I write this, we are just two days out from what promises
to be an epic, one-of-a-kind, Hybrid Convention. I hope
to see you all there, as we navigate the new normal.

8. Easy As 1,2,3!!! - John Carey #159

Message by John Carey (UK)

If
you play by the rules of "effect is everything",
the following triple 'Which Hand' routine should get your
interest. The price to pay is three gaffed coins. A double
headed two pence, a double tailed ten pence and a double
headed 50 pence. Carry these in your pocket with a few
regular coins of different values to the gaffs and you're
all set.
Request
the help of three people. "Today I would like to demonstrate
the sending of thoughts. I've got some change here we can
use for our test." Bring out all your pocket change
and casually hand the two pence to spectator one, the ten
pence to spectator two and the 50 pence to
spectator three. Put the rest of the change away. Ask each
participant to cover their coin with their other hand and
shake their hands up a few times. "I will look away
now. Take a peek at your coins. If it landed heads up, hold
it in your left fist. If it's tails up hold it in your right
first. Then each of you make your other hands into fists
and then tell me when it's cool to turn back to face you."
So
as per the above script when you turn around you will be
all set for a beautiful triple divination. But don't throw
the power of the effect away by doing so immediately. Work
with each participant in turn, saying you will try and pick
up on their thoughts, the inflections in their voice and
so on. Really act out the moment because if you really could
read minds it wouldn't be easy!
Eventually
you can do the triple revelation. I hold my left hand out
palm down and push down the right hand of the person holding
the two pence, the left hand of the person holding the ten
pence and finally the right hand of the participant with
the 50 pence. This can be and indeed
should be dramatic. All that's left to do is ask each person
to open their remaining hand that's in a fist to reveal
a super strong triple 'Which Hand' divination!
Notes:
Overseas readers naturally substitute double sided coins
you can acquire in your own currency.
