I recently assembled the festivities around the world, Australia and West in twelve hours for Harry Houdini.

I have been in touch with Chip Romero and he is to be available May 7 for the time of six hours to celebrate Doug Henning's 75th!

It will again be by Zoom with prerecording encouraged for content, timing, follow up Q and A with several who RSVP by April 28th

Also Chip Romero has asked for questions beforehand to answer.

I have assembled a possible program and have been lead to you as a good source for others to invite in this event.

I would ask, if you have any immediate material or video to submit to add to the festivities again around the world, Australia and West but in six hours, please let me know as to length or subject. I am also asking you to let me know who else you would like to see at Doug's 75th.
As it is only a six hour event, my discussions with Chip have lead me to you, and others and Canada to be there.

If we know of a known video already to present- we are seeking highlights or little known treasures.

Format-invited guests to present or something that YOU know you want to share.

As suggested contributors we may ask upwards of 24 at a quick 1, 3, 5 minute video which gets delivered BY certain deadline for programming for time and review prior or their schedule does not allow them to be at that time.

Joel Zaritsky in charge of ZOOM and transmitting-I also receive videos for timing and programming.
The assistance of Tim Wise of Abra.TV on event day of simulcasting.

Tribute Times short 1-3-5 minutes prerecorded and sent to myself and Joel Zaritsky by a date by method

As I did for the Houdini Birthday, SAM, IBM, Magic Circle, FISM, all invited. In twelve hours SAM and I started in Australia and came west.

*Timing some may not be able to come in at their location and time but we will do our best to keep it flowing or with too many time delays.

Again-We request if any video is being prepared to please submit to Joel Zaritsky <jizdds@optonline.net>and myself tdgmagic@gmail.com NO LATER April 28.

Chip has asked for questions ahead of time. I would request the same sent to me with deadline April 28th pending results.

Presents are not required.
Your presence is welcomed.

I will serve as Host and Moderator for the six hours.
I appreciate all who come to stay or just visit for a spell.

Some topics Chip has asked that you may consider being on with him, pending subject, availability and schedule. Or if may just zoom in as schedule permits.

3. A New Owner Appears For Hollywood's Magic Castle
--------------------------------------------
Los Angeles Daily News

Los Angeles - The exclusive Magic Castle in Hollywood, home to the Academy of Magical Arts and one of Los Angeles' most storied landmarks, is getting a new owner, with the founder of video-game maker Gearbox Entertainment announcing Monday his purchase of the Franklin Avenue manor.

An avid magician himself and longtime AMA member and Magic Castle attendee, Randy Pitchford said he is dedicated to the preservation of 1908-vintage building.

"The Magic Castle is like bedrock - the center point of magic," Pitchford said in a statement. "The people who think of the Castle as their home and the place itself seem to have magical properties that have created and inspired some of the world's greatest entertainers. I'm proud to be trusted to both give back to the place that made me to become the custodian of the Magic Castle and to work with its members and the Larsen family to ensure our most incredible club house grows and thrives for decades to come."

The Larsen family has operated the Magic Castle since the 1960s, leasing the home from owner Thomas O. Glover and turning it into an exclusive clubhouse for magicians.

"Randy Pitchford has done something extraordinary to protect our beloved Magic Castle, and I could not be happier about our current situation as well as the prospects for the future," Magic Castle co-founder Milt Larsen said in a statement. "Randy really understands and appreciates my vision and the Larsen family vision, and there is no one better to carry on what we started in 1963."

A purchase price for the property was not revealed. Erika Larsen, daughter of Castle co-founders Bill and Irene Larsen, will continue to operate the exclusive club - which is open only to AMA members and their invited guests.

"Randy's purchase of the Magic Castle brings the heart and soul back to this institution that I have loved and devoted my life to. I know my parents would be thrilled with this news," Erika Larsen said. "Randy's business-acumen, long-standing commitment to magic, and his love for the Magic Castle make him the perfect owner."

The formal announcement of the purchase included statement's from some of the biggest names in magic, including David Copperfield, Penn Jillette and Jillette's partner, Teller.

"I've known Randy Pitchford for years, and I know he has a day job, but in my mind he's a magician," Jillette said. "I believe Randy's heart is in magic. For as long as I've known about the Magic Castle, it's been a bit precarious. I always worried about it. Now I don't need to. The Magic Castle, the most important gathering place for magicians, is now in safe and loving hands. I'm relieved and delighted. Randy's professionalism, love for magic, and commitment to entertaining the world are what the Magic Castle needs to propel it forward."

4. Seeing Quebec City Through The Eyes Of Louise Penny
--------------------------------------------
Message by Joan Caesar ( Canada)

I am never without a book and flights provide perfect opportunities to read undisturbed. Several times I was asked by strangers if I'd read the Louise Penny series. After being asked enough times, about the same books, I decided to look into them. It took no time to become addicted to the stories and the characters. They take place in the mythical town of Three Pines, said to be located south of Montreal near the Vermont border, but one in particular, Bury Your Dead, takes place for the most part in Quebec City.

The series is so popular, there are tours in Quebec City and elsewhere that take tourists to the places mentioned in the books.

A synopsis of the Bury Your Dead from the internet:

As Quebec City shivers in the grip of winter, its ancient stone walls cracking in the cold, Chief Inspector Armand Gamache plunges into the most unusual case of his celebrated career. A man has been brutally murdered in one of the city's oldest buildings - a library where the English citizens of Quebec safeguard their history. And the death opens a door into the past, exposing a mystery that has lain dormant for centuries...a mystery Gamache must solve if he's to apprehend a present-day killer.

Based on this novel, there's a two and a half hour tour that follows the trail of Chief Inspector Armand Gamache as he investigates the murder of a local amateur archeologist, whose body was found in the cellar of the Québec Literary and Historical Society. Explore Old Québec City's narrow streets with the guide and see the places where life and work bring Armand Gamache in a plot twist so unexpected it's chilling, and a description of Québec intriguing enough to make you book your next vacation there.

A Louise Penny tour starts at the Quebec Tourist Information Centre (12, Sainte-Anne Street). Among landmarks mentioned in the novel, the tour stops at the Notre-Dame de Québec Basilica, the Literary and Historical Society (Morrin Centre). which is a cultural centre in the Old Quebec neighbourhood of Quebec. The centre is designed to educate the public about the historic contribution and present-day culture of local English-speakers. You also see where French General Montcalm died after the Battle of the Plains of Abraham. The tour ends on the Place d'Armes.

The Bury Your Dead walking tour departs the Quebec Tourist Information Centre, 12 rue Ste-Anne across the park from the Chateau Frontenac. This takes place every Wednesday and Saturday at 1:30pm, from May 1st till October 31st. If interested check to make sure the days and times are the same in 2022.

One of the restaurants mentioned in the book is Aux Anciens Canadiens, 34 rue Saint-Louis. The menu includes stag, elk, bison steaks and fish but the highlight is its maple products.

There are several review of the restaurant on Trip Advisor: Fantastic restaurant for French Canadian cuisine. Everything we ordered was good. The beef wellington and their meat pies are delicious and full of flavour. The maple bread pudding is one of the best I've ever had. Absolutely a must try when in Quebec. Their price fix menu offers great value. If you go before 5:00 pm you get a better price.

Quite a treat! We came for a special dinner on a Tuesday evening with a reservation and were seated right away. The decor was unique and the service was amazing. Moreover, the food was delicious and really provided a great taste of Quebecois cuisine! For me, this restaurant is a must.

Another restaurant mentioned in the book is Le Petit Coin Latin, 8-1/2 rue Sainte-Ursula. It has indoor dining as well as a patio and serves a variety of French Canadian cuisine. It's not quite as upscale as Aux Anciens Canadiens and the prices reflect that.

5. No Stone Unturned - Paul Stone - Article #55
--------------------------------------------
Message by Paul Stone (US)

Over the years I've been hugely fortunate to get to know many great magicians, and in a lot of cases, to book them to appear in my shows, but there are inevitably always a few that particularly stand out in my memory because they had such an impact on me personally and played such an important part in my life.

This of course isn't unique to me, I'm sure that every one of us who is involved in the world of magic have our own special memories of magicians that have either mentored us or gone the extra mile to help us.

I could mention the names of literally dozens of magicians who have shared their amazing knowledge and talents with me, but over the next couple of weeks I'm going to pick out a few to whom I feel I owe a particular debt of gratitude.

The 'Amusing & Confusing' Johnny Paul - who was one of the first Bar Magicians in Chicago, before moving to Las Vegas where his name became synonymous with the Showboat Hotel & Casino, both as a Hospitality Entertainer, and eventually as their Entertainment Director.

Johnny was a teddy bear of a man, with big hands and a warm personality that immediately put audiences at ease. His magic was strong, commercial and entertaining. I was lucky to become close friends with Johnny and his wife Winnie, and I brought him over to perform in England on a few occasions, one of which was to appear as the final guest on Paul Daniels's 'This Is Your Life' TV program produced by John Fisher. Johnny charmed everyone he met, he was a class act.

Probably my favourite magicians ever were Hans & Helga Moretti, the Morettis, from Germany. For me, they were the absolute epitome of what performers should be. Their act had everything; skill, originality, showmanship, excitement and danger!

I booked them on numerous occasions, and they always delivered. Their signature Cardboard Box illusion, the Tibetan Cross, the Blindfold Crossbow where Hans shot an arrow over his shoulder into an apple on Helga's head, and their Paper Tree Levitation, were all stunning, and left audiences gasping, and clients scared to death!

I loved their act, but I used to have palpitations every time I booked Hans because I knew there was real danger and always a chance of an accident. On several occasions he would emerge from an illusion covered in blood, but he shrugged it off and kept it from the audience. The Morettis were the ultimate professionals, and an impossible act to follow!

And even though Hans's outward demeanour appeared threatening and tough, and Helga a lady you wouldn't want to argue with, in reality, off stage, they were the nicest, most modest and kindest people you could ever wish to meet. They were the best, and I miss them.

Next week, I'll share with you my memories of a couple more of the 'greats'.

How To Visit a Magic Show-

At the Chicago Magic Lounge we often have guests who are magicians come in to see our shows and operations. Most of the time they are pleasant, and they really have a great time seeing what we do. Occasionally we have magicians that need a little guidance, so I'd like to offer some dos and don'ts for visiting a magic venue.

The first thing I recommend is to let us know that you too are a magician. At the bar I ask almost everyone how they heard about us and where they are from. That's a good time to let us know that you too do magic.

As a professional magician I am never threatened to know there is another magician in the audience. I've made new friends this way. I don't believe in holding anything back when I perform for magicians, I will do all of my lines and all of my effects the same way. This seems to be a fear for some magicians. They think "I'm not going to do my good stuff, because that guy will steal my lines and routines". A pro doesn't care. I don't care, take them. If my lines and ideas help further magic in some way, go for it. I'll be making up more lines and bits tomorrow.

Recently we had a visitor, let's call him Bob. He didn't tell me directly he was a magician, but when I pulled out a color changing knife to show a couple of people at the bar he said, "Oh a color changing knife"- this let me know at once he knew something about magic. It also spoiled the effect for the other 2 people I was about to show it to. So that's the first don't - don't reveal what is about to happen, especially when laymen are present.

He went further when I started a card routine. When the card jumped to the top he said "My, that is an ambitious card" Not as bad as giving away the effect before I do it, but he was still trying to let me know he was 'with it' as the carneys say.

Every so often I take break for the most important bar activity to take place, selling drinks! That is the business of a bar, after all. When I came back from my break Bob was standing in the middle of the room doing coin tricks for one of our house magicians. He actually had some skill, but on one move he kept dropping a coin. Of course people hear this and look over to see some other guy doing tricks.

This is perhaps the biggest 'don't', don't start performing at a magic venue without asking or being asked. There is a time and place for this sharing, this was neither. Ask first. I'm happy to watch you do a trick; I've learned some good tricks this way. But ask first. That same night Bob was there one of our house magicians saw someone at the bar that he had met before. He asked if I minded him doing something for his friend. Of course I said yes, and we all enjoyed it. That's the way to do it.

Those are 2 big 'don'ts', here is one 'do' - Show your appreciation, tip the magician!! Can you guess if Bob did?? Don't be a Bob.

A young Julie Eng performing skilled magic in Vancouver at the "Weekend of Magic". This Blast from the Past vintage video clip is from the Biltmore Hotel in Vancouver in 1986. Hosts Shawn Farquhar & David Wilson hosted the "Weekend of Magic". Vancouver was hosting the World Expo at the same time.

** Many thanks and appreciation to Munawar & Muzaffur for permitting us to post this rare performance.

Julie is the Executive Director of Magicana. She is directly responsible for their philanthropic projects & her "hands-on" community involvement with My Magic Hands & Senior Sorcery.

Julie Eng's magical life is unique. She was born into a family where magic was a mainstream existence. She appeared on stage, magically, before she could walk. Her father a very respected magician, Tony Eng, mentored and cherished Julie's passion for magic.

He taught her everything he could and then "pushed her out of the nest" and into a new exciting world working for David Ben and then Magicana where she is now the Executive Director and continues to work closed with David.

8. News From The Academy Of Illusions
--------------------------------------------
Message by Jay Scott Berry (Australia)

It's been another exciting week, with multiple magical accomplishments. In addition to the regular Zoom Sessions, Programs and Konvention Planning, we continue to branch out and build creative alliances. These now range from Individuals and Clubs to The S.A.M. and The Magic Castle.

Our Top Story is The Key West Hybrid Konvention, just four weeks away. On May 14 & 15th, we will Go Live with Masters and Grandmasters of the Art, to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of Frank's Magic Bar. Headliners for this first annual event include Michael Ammar, Doc Eason, Frank Everhart, Geno DeVille, Greg Otto and yours truly. On deck are Exclusive Shows, Lectures, Workshops and Discussions on Close-up and Bar Magic. All will be Webcast on Zoom, with Registrants receiving Digital Downloads of all the main Events. More info at www.DeVilleMagic.net

In just 6 weeks, the Zoom Storming Masterclasses have provided over 12 hours of intensive sleight-of-hand training, to students around the globe. Students have had a full on immersion in Coins, Sponge Balls, Silks, Ring and Ribbon, TT, Sanada, Cloaking Device and Locking FS/2 Gimmicks! This Saturday, we will focus on Reel and Silk Magic, including Preparation, Basic Handling plus impossible penetrations through Mic Stand, Cane, Wand, Rope and Arm. Next week, we'll take a deep dive into Topits. As with my Lectures, these Masterclasses are available, via Zoom, to Clubs and Conventions worldwide.

The raves continue to roll in from last week's Magic Castle Virtual Show. Having set the bar, Jack Goldfinger and I are now discussing plans and dates to work together and further our alliance with the Castle. Sim Sala Bim, watch this space!

Finally, as many of you may know, the S.A.M. runs the V1.2 Online Lectures. Last year, I joined them for their TT Intensive. I am happy to report that past President, Dr. Joel Zaritsky, has invited me back for a Sanada Gimmick Intensive. This is one of the most powerful gimmicks in magic yet surprisingly underused. As most know, I've spent 25 years mastering it and continue to pioneer the frontiers of its use. Presented on Zoom, the fun starts at 4pm EST on May 8th and is free to all S.A.M. Members.

9. Broken Wand - David Goodsell
-------------------------------------------
Message by Crickett Goodsell Tyacke

Dave Goodsell passed peacefully. Thank you all for your kind thoughts and prayers.

Friends: My dad, Dave Goodsell, has Hodgkin's lymphoma, stage 3, maybe stage 4. It's curable in younger, healthier people, but the chemo treatment is so aggressive that for someone like Dave, who's extremely frail, chemo would do more harm than good - and possibly even kill him. If he could regain enough strength, he could possibly take on chemo, but right now, even though he wants to get better, it's too much.

Message by Bruce Kalver

Broken Wand - very sad to report the passing of my mentor and friend David Goodsell.

David and I spoke most Sunday nights and had great conversations about everything.

David was the longest editor for MUM Magazine and then Oracle magazine. He earned many awards throughout the years including one from The Magic Castle.

When I was working towards presidency in the Society of American Magicians, I worked very hard to earn David's respect. That lead to a friendship and mutual admiration. Many decisions as president were based on "what would David think?".

The magic world has lost a giant resource of knowledge as well as a voice of reason.

Thoughts go out to his wife Jann Goodsell and the entire family.

Very, very sad.

10. Peekaboo - John Carey #157
-------------------------------------------
Message by John Carey (UK)
http://www.johncareymagic.co.uk/

Does the mentalism world need another business card peek? No it does not! But that won't stop creative people working on them. Peekaboo is very simple and deceptive. You will require three double blank business cards, a marker and a number 16 sized rubber band that you place around your left wrist.

Bring out the cards and a pen. Hand one to a participant and ask them to think of the name of somebody special in their life. Hand them the marker and look away as you ask them to print that person's name in big letters on the card. Then request that they turn the card writing side down and place it on the table. "Using these other two cards let's place a barrier between you and me and your thought."

Take one of the cards and hold from above in the palm-down right hand. Bring that hand down to the tabled card and set the card it holds on top, sidejogged slightly to the left. This will be hidden by the back of the right hand. Raise the right hand upwards and apparently place the remaining card you hold in the left hand underneath the two cards. Actually though you secretly put it under the top sidejogged card and square up. The card with their thought on is now secretly on the bottom of the packet.

Bring the packet up to your left fingertips held like a Charlier cut grip. "Let's place a restraining device around these cards." Look at your left wrist where the rubber band is and with the right hand come over and pull the rubber band off the wrist and straight over the cards, wrapping it
around twice. As you pull the band off and that is the focal point, tilt your left hand to the left slightly, allowing a nice clear peek of the name written down on the bottom card.

Ask your helper to extend a palm up hand and place the package onto it. Then have them cover it with their other hand. "So you're thinking of someone special in your life. I'm sensing this is someone you trust greatly. Someone who's been there for you through both the good and bad times. Keep saying the name of that person over and over just in your mind for me. May I ask you a question please? Who is Michael?" They will properly react at this moment. Take back the cards from them and put them away casually and don't say anything for a few moments. Allow your helper their moment. Yes my friends. Silence can be golden...
