Although April 1st is best known for being 'April Fool's Day', this year it has marked two important events in the world of magic.

The world renowned and iconic Magic Castle in Hollywood has been sold by the Glover family and is now assured a long and hopefully exciting future.

This news was officially announced at a packed meeting in the Palace of Mystery at the Magic Castle and was warmly received by the members. The deal still has to be finalized but everything seems to be moving smoothly.

The new owner is Randy Pitchford who spoke impressively about his support and love of the Magic Castle, and it looks like it will be in good hands. I'm certain that magicians from all over the world will be delighted by this news.

Speaking of the Magic Castle, I made a rare visit there last weekend in the company of my good friend and 'magic royalty' Diana Zimmerman.

Diana started the Junior program over 40 years ago, thanks to the support of Cary Grant, and she ran the program virtually single handedly for twenty years. Although she has now stepped back a little, she is still actively involved and is as enthusiastic as ever about it.

Diana is always looking to help young talent, and she asked me to help teach a couple of effects to one of her new, and incredibly talented proteges, by the name of Day Mori. This young man is definitely going places, and not only excels with his magic, but also has a great voice. He already has thousands of followers on Instagram and TikTok. Watch out for his name, I'm sure you're going to hear a lot more about him.

The other event was the opening of Criss Angel's new show, in conjunction with Franco Dragone, AMYSTIKA, the Mindfreak Prequel, at the Planet Hollywood Hotel & Casino here in Las Vegas.

Also featured in the show is Mike Hammer, who is still performing his own hilarious show at the 4 Queens Hotel & Casino, Downtown.

I've not heard the reviews yet for AMYSTIKA, but with a bit of luck I'll report back next week.

Message by Scott Wells, M.I.M.C. with Gold Star

Last week we spoke with Florida-based magician, Erick Olson. Erick started out in Disney World. Not a bad place for anyone to begin their magic career. But he went on to become a successful trade show and corporate magician. He also opened and managed not one, but two magic theaters in the Orlando, Florida area. During COVID lockdown, he developed Bar Bets and Tricks that have been selling worldwide through his website at: https://www.barbetsandtricks.com/

You can listen to that episode wherever you get your podcasts, but for more information, videos, links and more, please visit:

This week we chat with Chuck Caputo about the Dutch Master, Tony Anverdi. Chuck may not be as well-known throughout the magic community; however, his passion for collecting, building and performing tricks from Anverdi are worth hearing. This week, Chuck tells us about this pioneer in the electronics wizardry world and how it developed into what many of us know and use in our everyday shows. You can listen online and watch a video of Chuck performing some of Anverdi's equipment here:
https://www.themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/672-chuck-caputo

And remember that this is the final week to register for a chance to win one of six copies of "Seventh Heaven" by Lewis Jones. Registration information is on the website(s) above. Good luck. And be sure to return next week for our daily updates from Austin, Texas at the Magic Collectors' Expo.

It's been a busy couple of weeks around Chicago, kids off for spring break, some travel, and booking shows for the spring and beyond. It feels great to be back working private and corporate parties and entertaining our guests at the Chicago Magic Lounge. This week I introduce you to one of the Magic Lounge's original magic team, Justin Purcell.

There are some fine sleight of hand workers at the Lounge, and one of the best is Justin Purcell. I've watched him work dozens of times and there are always 2 things that strike me about him. First, he's very funny in the driest way. Second, his sleight of hand is really flawless. He never flashes. Ever. Everyone flashes sometime, but I've never seen him flash. Anything. It's amazing.
A great example is his "3 Ball Trick". It's a two in the hand 1 in the pocket kind of plot, but his magic is so smooth there is only mystery left behind. I've seen this from many angles and yet I seen nothing. All with the assistance of his helper, "A Net".

Justin has performed in all of the roles at the Magic Lounge; pre show walk around, he's headlined on stage, wowed them in the 654 Club and has followed my show many nights for the late night bar set on the weekends in our performance bar. His bar magic is especially fun, you need to be a lot looser behind the bar, and he's got the knack. He's able to ad lib his lines and jazz his magic along despite the usual bar distractions.

Some of his favorite work is with a stacked deck. He'd prefer I don't mention which one he uses, and besides, he said, he's made some changes along the way. You can do some really amazing things with a stack, and Justin explores them all. People are truly amazed when they spell their name to their card!

A full time magician, Justin grew up in Indianapolis Indiana, and his story is not uncommon. Started hanging out at the magic shop, Best Fun Entertainment. Not a great name for a magic shop, but a great name for the telephone directory. The owner saw his potential and started booking him for shows. His first was an adult office party, and he admits he didn't know what he was doing but got through it and got a nice paycheck. College was at Indiana University in Bloomington IN, where he received a communications degree. He's also a great drummer, and best of all, a great Dad to 3½ year old Soren and a fine husband to Laura.

Justin is still a young man in his prime, and gaining more notice in magic. He's been working some conventions and has a Penguin Magic Lecture available. This month he marks a milestone with his first booking at the Magic Castle in Hollywood starting next week, April 11, 2022. He'll do great there, and they won't see anything either!!

6. News From The Academy Of Illusions

Message by Jay Scott Berry (Australia)

As many of you know, my life and career are indelibly linked to The Magic Castle. Moving to Hollywood at 17, I became a Junior Member and, soon after, was the youngest magician to ever perform a week there. By breaking that '21 Rule' it opened the door for dozens of other young magicians. In 1982, I was chosen as their representative for the FISM in Lausanne. This was to be the springboard to my many years performing across Europe and around the world. Looking back, I owe so much, to so many, at the Castle, including Bill and Irene Larsen. And it has weighed upon me that I will never be able to repay their kindness. So now, it warms my heart, to be able to pay it forward.

Which brings us to our top story and how, through it all, I have come full circle. This past week, I was honored to produce and star in the Magic Castle Virtual Show. For this, I brought in Meadow Perry and Rod Chow each for their Magic Castle Debut. Together, we made a commitment to set the new bar for virtual shows. The key was fusing our original, world class magic with the best in webcasting tech. I applied the same commitment to excellence and attention to detail that I demand in my live productions: Lights, Staging, Sound, Backdrop, Charisma and Presentation, in this case, to the camera.

Thanks to the extraordinary performances of my Co-Stars and the tech expertise of Michael Fogiel, we achieved our stated goal and the raves poured in. Castle Entertainment Director, Jack Goldfinger exclaimed that "You not only set the bar, you exceeded it!" But the real story here is that, amidst the accolades, Jack asked me to produce more of their Virtual Shows and Events. By bringing the Academy of Illusions into creative alignment with the Academy of Magic Arts, we now enter a whole new realm of Virtual and VR possibilities. Welcome to, as the bard so appropriately called it, The Undiscovered Country.

This week also included the sold out Zoom Storming Sessions, focused on The Sanada Gimmick. These two hour long Intensive Masterclasses run each week for a limited group of attendees. This coming Saturday, I'll focus on The Cloaking Device and FS/2 Gimmicks. With many of my A List effects being explained, in detail, this Session promises to sell out as well. I'm also presenting these Sessions for clubs, groups and conventions, upon request.

Our weekly hit show, Geno Mania focused on Cruise Ship shows. On this 24th episode, Geno freely shared his extensive expertise from over 10 years performing on major cruise lines. He also played an incredible performance of Wayne Dobson's take on The Invisible Deck effect. With avid viewers from all corners of the globe, the full on webcast culminated with a friendly rant on piracy in What Gets Your Goat?

Finally, we are counting down to The Key West Hybrid Konvention on May 14 & 15. This first annual event will include live performances from Frank's Magic Bar in Key West as well as Virtual Shows and Lectures from Grandmasters around the world! With over 18 hours of planned events, this promises to be an epic weekend of wonder! For more info, please visit www.DeVilleMagic.net

7. Copper Silver Wtf?! - John Carey #156
-------------------------------------------
Message by John Carey (UK)
http://www.johncareymagic.co.uk/

This routine was designed with strolling work in mind, where there's no tables and the action must be either in your hands or your spectators hands. You will require a copper silver double faced coin and four half-dollar sized Chinese style coins. Pop the copper silver coin inside
your right jacket pocket and finger-palm the Chinese coins in your left hand as a neat stack.

"A classic mystery using two different coins. A copper old penny and a silver half dollar. Copper in my left hand and silver in my right. Watch this! Now the silver is in my left hand and the copper is in my right. I will put the copper coin away. But watch, look and listen as it teleports over to join the copper coin. By the way, do you know where magic comes from? It comes from CHINA!!!"

So there's my simple script. Let's discuss the technical aspects of the piece, which are not at all difficult. The right hand enters the pocket and brings out the coin, displaying it at the base of the fingers. If it's showing copper you call out that colour or vice versa - silver. Execute a simple fake transfer into the left hand, actually finger-palming the coin. The right hand goes to the pocket and brings the coin out with the silver side showing in our example. Close the right hand around the coin, secretly flipping it over. Make a magical gesture with both closed fists and then open the right hand to reveal a change into copper. The left hand partially opens and pretends to hold a coin at the fingertips as you say "now the silver is here." This is a Slydini idea and is all about acting and attitude. Close the left hand and put the Copper/Silver coin away in the pocket.

Then state you will attempt to make the copper coin teleport to the left hand to join the silver coin. Pantomime extracting the coin through the fabric of your jacket and tossing it into the air. The eyes follow the flight and look down to the left hand, which gently shakes the stack of coins
you've held out the whole time. This gets a nice response. A moment later ask a spectator where do they think magic comes from? Let them reply and then open the left hand to reveal four Chinese coins, which gets a great response! Pop those coins away in your left pocket ready for the next group. Simple, practical and magical...

8. Beneath The Trapdoor #1 - You Need To Quit Magic
--------------------------------------------
Message by Bronson Chadwick (US)

"You need to quit magic." Those aren't words you want to hear from your booker but there I was.

I was on the phone with a professional who once produced David Copperfield. Since the settling of the pandemic, I've been looking to get back to work in front of more live audiences and finding a new agent seemed to be the route to take.

But "quit magic?" Why!? He hadn't even seen a video of my act yet!

I clung to his every word to see why he was so pessimistic about magic. He explained to me that he's seen the same magic repeatedly. One copycat after another claiming to be a creative performer when these acts are merely just another batch of chef salad with the "dressing of the day" atop.

He wasn't talking about tricks, either. It's all the other key elements to magic that are making bookers roll their eyes. So many acts dress, talk and act the same. While one could argue that "if it's new to the audience then it's new altogether" but thanks to the appetite of today's entertainment-driven culture; audiences know when they are getting something fresh versus when they are being fed chef salad. Yes, there's a time and place for doing classic material but we shouldn't use that material as a crutch.

Chasing down originality can feel like chasing a ghost. You feel like its near but can't quite put your finger on it. But here is one special cheat that you can use to catch that ghost: be RELEVANT. My booker friend went on to say that when Copperfield broke into pop culture, he transformed magic by changing the way he talked and dressed. They became relevant. The same can be said for Copperfield's latest Vegas show or Justin Willman's Magic for Humans.

The incestuous patterns we see in magic are a byproduct of uncultured magicians. We obsess over magic, buy more magic, and run in the same social circles with other magicians. While these can all be good things, shouldn't we be getting our inspiration from OUTSIDE the world of magic? One of the most toxic poisons for the development of magic is to spend too much time around magic culture. My wife is a successful visual artist. She doesn't paint to show off her brushes or canvas but to communicate a message of how she feels or an observation about nature or culture. She connects to the audience through her medium of painting. It's never "just a pretty picture."

Likewise, in magic it should never be "just a cool trick." We should never push a cigarette through a coin just because we can. Too often does our work become about the trick instead of about the audience. And while killer effects are good things to show to our audiences, without ample presentation the only message the audience will be left with is "how did they do that?"

That's not good enough. It is foolish to assume that an audience will respond well to our magic just because a trick is strong.

The mission of the magician is to use the medium of amazing magic to communicate a message to the audience; one other than "Watch this cool trick." Let's choose messages that are relevant to our audiences today. Ask these questions in order to find inspiration for relevance:

#1 - You Need to Quit Magic

What's in the news? What matters to my audience? What is on my mind (besides magic) that I would like to portray to my audience?

When I experience quality art (including magic or other artforms) I walk away asking questions. I'm not so concerned with how the artist created what they made but how their work made me feel. As magicians we should have the same goal. Audiences should be left feeling astounded but more interested in how we made them think and feel.

Remember, when audiences see us do magic, they get to live vicariously through us as we do the things they can only dream of doing. Pair that power with a culturally relevant message and you have a formula for an original act.

You don't need to chase down the ghost of originality. It will come to you if you seek to be relevant. But if you can't make your magic relatable, perhaps it is time for you to take the advice of one bitter Nevada booker and trade magic for stamp collecting.

10. The Orchante Saga - Beginnings
-------------------------------------
Written by the late Tommy Orchard (The Amazing Orchante)

WHOOSH! Another year has shot past at what seems the speed of light! In a week or so the Christmas tree, ornaments, lights etc will come down - to be carefully packed away and forgotten for another eleven months. The trouble is, those eleven months are whizzing past so quickly these days, that I am threatening to leave everything in situ'!

It takes at least two hours to pack it all up, and around three hours to get all the stuff down from the loft to set it up - again. Apart from that, it looks fabulous so, why not make every day feel like it's Christmas! Sounds sensible to me; we do have a lovely garden that is quite beautiful in the summer, and a hellava a lot of indoor house plants - the tree and decorations would be an extension of that. Veronica reckons that I already think every day is Xmas, and that she is Mrs Claus!!!

Various family members, and friends in New Zealand and Australia have been doing there damnedest to make us feel bad, by crowing about the great weather they are having, knowing full well that here in the U.K. it is winter time. Several friends from Sydney NSW, and up on Queensland's Gold Coast, as well as Brisbane, Australia, were complaining about how hot it is, but lovin' it all the same.

I do remember the scorching, sweltering temperatures In Sydney; 90 degrees plus in the shade, and 100% humidity! Now that sure does drain your energy. I can recall cutting the lawn at our home in North Ryde, a suburb of Sydney - 10 minutes outside with the lawnmower and twenty minutes inside with the air-conditioning going full blast, then under the shower, trying to cool off, and then back out again. it was murder!

Once again, this past year has been one of many sorrows, with the passing of several friends, many of whom are now performing on that 'BIG STAGE IN THE SKY'; There's one helluva show goin' on up there'!
