4. Broken Wand - Gerald Taylor

Message by Raymond Crowe (Australia)
Sad
news of the passing of Gerald Taylor, magician, magic shop
owner and historian of Australian Magic.
I
had known Gerald since I was a boy sending my saved school
lunch money to purchase magic books and tricks from his
shop - Aladdin's Magic Shop in Melbourne, Australia.
His
shop started so many Australian magicians off on their paths
to learning their craft. Thank you Mr Taylor.
Below
is a video created by Luis De Matos when The Illusionist
were in Melbourne with Gerald discussing a Historical magic
prop. It shows Mr Taylors manner and knowledge of our craft.

5. Broken Wand - Ron Cartlidge
--------------------------------------------
Our
good friend, Ron Cartlidge, passed away on December 12 at
age 82.
When
a magician passes away we have a tradition of the broken
wand ceremony. In Ron's case there is a lot to acknowledge.
Ron was a member of the I.B.M., The Magic Circle, and a
Life Member of the S.A.M.
He
was a great proponent of magic in Texas and regularly visited
every magic convention he could attend. He lent his energy
to the Austin Chapter of the Society of American Magicians
and was responsible for reviving the Austin Magic Auction.
Ron was a Houdini expert who wrote Houdini's Texas Tours
1916 and 1923. Ron's obituary is available online.

Chicago Magic Lounge
ChicagoMagicLounge.com
In
our last visit we had a chance to meet the founder of the
Chicago Magic Lounge, Joey Cranford. This week say hello
to the very first member of our ensemble, Luis Carreon.
Luis hails from Morelia, in the Michoacán state of
Mexico. Luis came to the US at the age of 8 to join his
mother on the south side of Chicago. It was there in his
teens he discovered Izzy Rizzy's Magic shop. He had seen
magic performed by his Grandfather who was a circus clown
in Mexico.
It
wasn't long before Izzy (Mike Rcemniski) saw something in
Luis and he began working at the shop. Izzy had business
cards printed for him and would drive him to his first shows.
Upon moving to Chicago's north side he discovered Ash's
Magic Shop, and once while asking about Mr Ash about Magic
Inc Mr Ash drove him a couple of blocks away for his first
visit to Jay and Fran Marshall's world famous shop.
History
repeated itself and in 2011 Luis began to work at Magic
Inc as a demonstrator and still works there a couple of
days a week. While at Magic Inc Luis began to self-produce
his shows in small theaters around town. Joey Cranford went
to see one of his shows and afterwards asked Luis if he'd
like to be a director. Luis took him up on the offer and
they began producing more shows together.
When
Joey originally opened the Chicago Magic Lounge in that
rented theater, Luis was the first performer. He was also
the first performer at our new (and current) theater in
2018. Sadly he was also the last performer before the pandemic
forced our closure. After a brief 504 days he was once again
the first magician to take the stage in August of last year.
Luis is definitely a tradition!
It's
time to mention that Luis is one of the most talented magicians
working today. With his many years of practice time while
working magic shops he has become a true expert at advanced
sleight of hand. Close up or stage work, Luis handles it
all with skill, grace and humor. That's why he's been asked
to perform at the Magic Castle four times so far. Oh and
by the way, he now drives himself to his gigs!!
Say
hello to Luis when you visit the Chicago Magic Lounge!

8. News From The Academy Of Illusions
--------------------------------------------
Message by Jay Scott Berry (Australia)
The
word of the week is Synergy: Where an interaction or cooperation
gives rise to a whole that is greater than the sum of its
parts. That perfectly describes the dynamic force behind
the multiple projects and shows we are now producing, all
in service of the Art of Magic.
In
just one month since the Academy joined forces with Abra.tv,
we have released four extensive newscasts, setting a new
benchmark in webcasting and global magic news reporting.
We have shined the spotlight on The Magic Castle, Mystique
Dining, Monday Night Magic, The Smoke & Mirrors Theater,
from the 90th annual Columbus Magifest to the Vive la Magie
Festival in France. Paul Draper has presented four masterful
episodes of "Navigating the New Normal" and we
just welcomed Romany as our official UK Correspondent. Tim
Wise had a film crew in Las Vegas for the S.A.M. Convention,
filming, interviewing and reporting. And that's just getting
warmed up!
Next
week, we will launch a brand new program, "Spotlight
On", set to livestream across Facebook and Youtube.
In each weekly episode, I will interview one of the movers
and shakers of our Art, going beyond the hype and beneath
the public facade. For the premiere, on 2/2/22, I am very
excited to present one of the greatest illusionists and
magic creators of all time, Franz Harary. We go live at
12pm LA, 3pm NY, 8pm UK, 9pm Paris, 4am SNG, 7am SYD and
10am AUK. As with all of our shows, replays will be available
to watch on the Academy and Abra.tv FB Pages.
Speaking
of live webcasts, GenoMania just streamed its 18th weekly
episode! This fun-filled program, with Geno DeVille and
myself, continues to gather fans and momentum. This week's
Tech Talk segment focused on running show sound through
Iphones and IOS devices. We then looked at Michael Ammar's
masterful "Ambitious Card" Routine and had our
lighthearted rant on "What Gets Your Goat?" So
much fun that it should be illegal.
This
weekend's Abra.tv News will include a look back at the S.A.M.
Convention. For this, I've created another high energy music
montage of stills, video and motion graphics. In her second
segment leading up to the Blackpool Convention, Romany will
interview Nikola Arkane, an extraordinary magician from
Belfast. I'll present a short preview of Franz Harary and
the "Spotlight On" program and more! As always,
the News will stream on Saturday from the Abra.tv Page across
the Facebook Magic Groups. www.facebook.com/streamingmagicnetwork

9. No Stone Unturned - Paul Stone - Article #46
--------------------------------------------
Message by Paul Stone (US)
This
week I'm delighted to be able to offer my huge congratulations
to a very close friend and one of the nicest men in show
business, Mark Raffles, who celebrated his 100th Birthday
last weekend.
Mark
performed for well over 70 years and is the supreme survivor!
He possessed the amazing and unique ability to adapt, to
regularly change with the times, and by doing so enjoyed
a long and successful career.
Originally
a classic style manipulation act, Mark performed under the
name of St Clair, silently, in part because of a speech
stammer, before reverting to Mark Raffles and transforming
into one of the top pickpockets in the entertainment world,
conquering his speech problems along the way. His act was
always hilarious and fast moving.
I
booked Mark to appear for several of my corporate clients
and he never disappointed. His egg bag routine and accompanying
opening line 'Eggo Eggo in the Bago' was unforgettable and
delivered as only Mark could do.
Then
an opportunity came along to take over the Wychwoods, a
dog act, from Jack Shaw, and Mark, together with his lovely
wife Joan, reinvented himself yet again and performed at
theatres around the UK. A wonderful showman, this act suited
him perfectly.
But
Mark still had more to come and, after he retired the Wychwood's
act, and the years crept up on him, his inventive mind developed
a new comedy act with large linking rings which continually
trapped this senior magician as he tried to perform the
trick. It was clever, and once again performed in Mark's
inimitable style.
I
had known Mark for many years when, at the ripe 'young'
age of 78, he contacted me to say that during his long career
he had worked virtually every theatre and venue there was,
but the one theatre he had never played, and always wanted
to, was the world famous London Palladium.
And,
as I was producing a couple of Variety and Magic shows at
the Palladium every year at that time, was there any way
I could help him to realise his dream.
I
found a way to make it happen. I included a 'Tribute to
Youth' segment in one of the Palladium Shows.
My
eldest son Danny who was 14 at the time was a big Buddy
Holly fan, and my youngest son Ben, who was 12 was a keen
drummer. With the help of a few professional musicians we
worked on a couple of songs for them to sing.
I
also introduced in this segment a young girl singer, also
just 12 years old. She had an incredible voice and brought
the house down with her version of 'Ave Maria'. It was her
first big show. She became a household name. You might have
heard of her, her name is Charlotte Church, and she is now
a multi-millionaire. Needless to say, I have never heard
a word from her since that day!
And
the third performer in this 'Tribute to Youth' segment was
Mark Raffles! And he did a great job.
I
honestly thought that Mark's performing days were over but,
once again, I was wrong! Fast forward twelve years later
- yes, twelve years!, when I was once again contacted by
Mark, now in his 90th year, and still sprightly as ever,
to enquire if there was a chance I could book him for a
show in Las Vegas!
At
that time I was producing several 'Variety 'Live' and 'World
Stars of Magic' shows at the Suncoast Hotel & Casino
in their classic 500 seater Vegas Showroom.
I
flew Mark out to Las Vegas, he performed his Linking Rings
routine immaculately as ever in one of the shows, and the
rest, as they say, is history!
The
term 'National Treasure' is bandied about far too easily
these days, but Mark Raffles is the real deal. A longtime
friend, and a true gentleman, Mark is an all-round class
act.

10. Open Travelers 2020 - John Carey #148
-------------------------------------------
Message by John Carey (UK)

The
classic Invisible Palm or Open Travelers effect is one of
my all-time favorites. Such a beautiful, pure assembly effect
that has spawned many notable versions, by Jennings, Marlo,
Cervon et al.
After
a hiatus of many years I revisited the plot recently and
what I am offering here are the fruits of my labor. My version
is technically speaking a packet effect. You will require
four Jokers and the four Aces. Set the packet up with the
Jokers on the face and the Aces below them and you are ready
to rumble...
Bring
out the packet from your pocket and hold it face-up from
above in a right-hand end grip or Biddle position. We will
now execute a Hamman count to display the packet as all
Jokers. The left thumb peels off three single cards, one
at a time. Then the three Jokers in the left hand are
switched for the five cards in the right hand as the two
hands come together. Peel off the three Jokers now in the
right hand on top of the left hands cards and square up.
Turn the packet face-down and spread off the top four cards
into the right hand and pocket the other cards, saying
you only need some of the cards for a demonstration of a
card cheating technique. Of course the cards you hold are
now the Aces.
Bring
both hands together and secure a left pinky break beneath
the second-from-top card as you square up. "I will
now demonstrate a secret gamblers technique to you, known
as the invisible palm." The right hand comes over the
packet and picks up both cards beneath the break and
tables them as one. Execute a quick two-as-three false count
with the remaining cards. Position the top card of the left
hand's packet in Finley tent-vanish position.
Bring
the right hand over this card and apparently openly palm
it. However, as soon as the right hand covers this card
allow it to secretly drop square on top of the other card.
Flex the right hand a couple of times and then slowly turn
it over as you say the card is now hidden in the invisible
palm. Turn the right hand palm-down and bring it down on
top of the double card on the table and split that double
as you move the hand to your right, revealing the magical
translocation of the second card.
Secretly
secure a left pinky-break beneath the top card of the left
hand's two cards as people react. Then pick up the two spread
cards from above and bring them over the left hand's cards
a moment to square them, at the same time secretly adding
the card beneath your break underneath
them. Table the three card packet squared up.
"Let's
do that again!" We will now execute a beautiful audible
false count of one-card-as-two by Paul Harris. Bring the
right hand palm-down over the left hand's card, the thumb
going to the inner short edge. Under cover of the right
hand the left pinky pulls down on the inner right corner
of the card and allows it to snap off as you say "one".
Then the right hand immediately pulls upwards at the inner
short edge and allows the card to snap off loudly as you
say "two". The illusion is a beautiful one. Bring
the right hand over the supposed two cards and pretend to
palm one away. A moment or two later turn the hand over
slowly to show the invisible palm
and a beat later bring that hand down to the tabled cards
and spread them under the hand and come away to reveal three
cards.
"Just
one to go now!" Openly place the last card face-down
into your right palm. Flex that hand a couple of times and
then let it drop out onto the table. Repeat this once more
and then suggest that you will try something else. Make
a magical gesture over the card and then turn it face-up
to
reveal an Ace. Allow this change to register and then complete
the mystery by revealing the magical change of all the cards
into Aces!
This
routine is all about rhythm and flow. Work at a nice unhurried
pace and put pauses in at each phase to maximize the magical
impact.

11. The Orchante Saga - Beginnings
-------------------------------------
Written by the late Tommy Orchard (The Amazing Orchante)
Please
note - this was first written 4 years ago - 2003 - I had
celebrated my 60th birthday!
Well,
after a week of 'celebrations', I have sobered up enough
this week to realize that I'm now on the wrong side of sixty
- by 14 days (now 4 years) (today is Sept. 27th 2003); it's
enough to
drive a man back to drink, although everybody has tried
to cheer me up by saying "You don't look a day over
fifty nine.!" 'Sympathetic bastards'! 'Stuff it', I'm
back on the 'Cocky' trail again. Cocky, you know, birds
- the feathered type.
We
named our Major Mitchell/Pink Cockatoo 'Aussie' - how original!
Two years old, and hand reared. He was very tame, affectionate
and full of character - an absolute delight, especially
after our recent experience with the "Come near me
and I'll bite your bloody hand off", Sulphur Crested
'nightmare'! Aussie, like all pink cockatoos, was stunningly
gorgeous, startlingly eye-catching and talk about vain.
Veronica gave him a largish mirror to play with, well it
was until he nibbled his way around the edges of it and
in time gradually reduced in size. He would cart it all
over the floor in his beak, propping it up against various
objects and have a chat with himself, while admiring his
reflected splendor. Can't blame him really; here is a description
of the male Pink cockatoo.
Length:
360mm, including 160mm tail. Back, wings and tail, brilliant
white; forehead, face, neck, breast, upper abdomen and under
wing-coverts - salmon pink; undersides of flight and tail
feathers strongly washed with deep salmon-pink; tail and
under tail-coverts, white; head adorned with narrow, forward-curving
erectile crest which is bright scarlet, with central band
of yellow and tipped with white. Iris very dark brown, almost
black; bill a horn coloured whitish-grey and, legs grey.
Staying
in Eastwood, we shifted from our flat and moved into a large
house - plenty of room with a sizable backyard which was
perfect for our miniature poodle 'Misky', and of course
'Aussie'. I think I may have mentioned earlier that we don't
like keeping our pets, especially birds, caged up. Parrots
and cockatoo's - all birds for that matter, are used to
the 'wide open spaces' and being kept locked up in a cage
is tantamount to you and I being locked up in a tiny prison
cell for the rest of our lives; you wouldn't like it, so
why impose such a terrible life sentence on our pets that
we supposedly love?
It
would be a different story if you had a large aviary such
as you see at a zoo, but how many of us have that sort of
space to erect one, or the finance to build it; only the
professionals, zoos and the very rich can afford that! Besides,
you would lose all personal contact with your pets, and
cockatoos crave company (that's why you see them in flocks),
especially human company if they have been hand reared,
and are raised as a member of your family - exactly the
same as a pet cat or dog. Cockatoos become very attached
to their owners, and many go into a state of shock
and suffer mental stress if they are separated from their
family; they pull their feathers out in despair, depression
and loneliness. I have seen it, and it is not a pretty sight!
It is most heart wrenching and you would really have to
be a hardhearted person not to be emotionally affected and
perhaps shed a tear or two in sorrow.
The
street that we resided in was lined with large trees and
the elderly woman who lived next door to us had one in her
front yard. One day there was some sort of commotion going
on, and we could hear what sounded like the screeching and
squawking of a parrot or cockatoo. Going outside to investigate,
we discovered our next-door neighbour standing beneath her
tree brandishing a stick. She pointed up into the tree and
there, about 20 feet up, was a very large Sulphur crested
cockatoo - and he was kicking up one hell of a racket! Now
our neighbour was a quiet, unassuming woman and she wasn't
too pleased at all the attention the cockatoo was attracting.
All she wanted was to get it to fly away from her property
and put a stop to all the embarrassment it was causing her.
Some people are strange folk!
Racing
around to our backyard, I grabbed my ladder, dashed back
and propped up against the tree trunk. With my neighbours
stick in hand, I climbed up; Damn, I could only get within
two branches of the cockatoo who, by this time had fallen
silent, and was watching me like a hawk (no pun intended).
After my experience with our last cockatoo I was, understandably,
more than a little nervous. Very slowly I pushed the end
of the stick (it was about eight foot long) towards the
bird, saying all along - "Hello cocky, who's a pretty
boy then .", and other silly human/bird
'talk' noises, fully expecting it to take-off or, at worst,
attack me! Bugger me if he didn't step calmly onto the stick,
and started sidestepping down. It's a wonder he didn't fall
off, I
was shaking like a leaf. He worked his way all the way down
to my hand, up my arm - bloody hell he was heavy, then onto
my shoulder; I got the shock of my life when he pushed his
huge head against my face, put his massive beak up to my
ear, I thought he was going to bite it off, and then, as
clear as a bell, said - "HELLO"!
To
be continued.
