--------------------------------------------
Message by Stan Allen (USA)

We're just under six months away from kicking off MAGIC Live with a Welcome Party and the opening of our incredible dealer room. "Room" might be a bit of an understatement, as it fills the entire Mardi Gras Ballroom, the largest meeting space at The Orleans Hotel here in Las Vegas.

Once again, we have teamed up with the world's finest magic manufacturers and merchants to create the most incredible "magic shop" you've ever seen. There will be a total of 60 vendors, including 12 first-timers. And, as in previous years, many of these dealers will be unveiling brand new items at MAGIC Live!

This year, our room design will also feature five mega-booths produced by Tannen's Magic, ProMystic, Vanishing Inc., Mike Michaels, and Potter & Potter.
It all adds up to over 17,000 sq. ft. of "What's New!"

Hope you can come shopping with us in May!

$12,000 monthly paid gigs for magicians !!!!

Jonathan Todd announces this amazing news with an exclusive Vanish Special Edition.

For the past two years magicians have been unable to perform live shows but rather relying on Online entertainment. We all knew at some stage shows would come back but nobody knew in what form. Since lock-down Jonathan Todd decided to take the negative headlines and turn them into something positive. For two years he has been working behind the scenes putting together a unique concept that will enable hotels to bring back live entertainment.

Jonathan Todd has a background steeped in magic dating back to the days of Dai Vernon and was one of the first close-up magicians to get accepted in to the Junior programme at The Magic Castle, now known as The Academy of Magical Arts.

This special edition will be of interest to every working magician because Jonathan has launched a major and innovative show concept that creates work for a lot of the worlds' most talented performers. With his background in managing and marketing celebrities he knows how to treat entertainers right and get them get paid well for the work they do.

Vanish Magazine is honored to be on board this amazing project along with The Academy of Magical Arts and Steven's Global Magic. We are proud to be chosen to be the magazine breaking this incredible news to the magic world and helping create work for a large roster of magicians.

Aside from my involvement with Vanish the board of directors of Hotel-Magic, LLC have asked me to be the exclusive agent in booking all the acts. With the goal of having 25 hotels on board around the world this will mean a world-wide talent search. If you have a full 70 minute parlor or two 40 minute shows then you can reach me at the e-mail below.

Find out how to get booked and what you need to be on the roster of performers in this special edition of Vanish.

4. December Issue Of Genii Magazine

Message by Richard Kaufman - Editor Genii Magazine

Join us and get tens of thousands of pages for as little as $35 when you subscribe to genii at www.geniimagazine.com: all back issues of Genii and MAGIC magazine are yours to read for free.

We close out 2021 with a comforting excerpt from Mike Caveney's new book Sawing. In it, P.T. Selbit, inventor of the illusion, comes off well; Horace Goldin, stealer of the illusion, comes off badly (and deservedly so). So many methods and so many thieves make for good reading. On a side note, I couldn't tuck my knees up to my chin if you offered me a million bucks!

Our columns this month include the second installment of Josh Jay's "The River", David Britland's "Cardopolis", David Kaye's "Expert at the Kid's Table", Jon Racherbaumer's "Exhumations", Roberto Mansilla's "Artifices", and John Gaughan's "Chamber of Secrets".

Then we have our monthlies: "Knights at The Magic Castle" by Shawn McMaster (business is slowly returning to normal at The Magic Castle, though customer levels are still low. Now is the time to go if you know a member), "The Eye" by Vanessa Armstrong, and "Magicana" by Jonathan Friedman. Reviews of books (Francis Menotti), tricks (David Regal), and videos (Ryan Matney) bring us to the end of 2021.

The Bar Magician -

The role of bar magician at The Chicago Magic Lounge is perhaps the most important of all of the performers. I realized this very soon after we opened. I am the first face of magic they see, not only when they walk in to the Lounge, but perhaps ever! Many (most?) people have never seen magic performed live, this is true whenever you're performing. If they like me and the magic I do they can become fans of magic and, we hope, future ticket buyers. If they don't like the bar magician they will not return. It's that simple.

As the bar magician I am the magical host of the room. I welcome people as they arrive, get them comfortable in these new strange surroundings, and then get to the magic.

By its nature, bar magic is usually simple in plot and short in duration. People have many distractions, and attention spans have limits. There are also many interruptions along the way. Drinks arrive or are spilled, glasses break, a new group of people arrive in the bar, the list goes on. If you are doing your 10 phase oil & water routine it is hard to make it play effectively. If you force a card, can't find it, then pull out your card silk with the chosen card, it is easy to follow and surprising, a good bar trick.

The definition of a great bar trick is one that people like to watch happen to others. An example of this from my set is the multiplying bunnies. I have always known of the power of this effect, but at the Lounge I have worked this up into a signature piece complete with a stupid little song I made up. By the end of the routine I have the entire bar singing this stupid little song! When we have return guests they start giggling the minute I begin the routine. They've seen it, they know what will happen, and they enjoy it even more.

Comedy is a usual feature in most bar magic. When I start tossing the lines I often hear 'oh, you're a comedian too?' Of course I am, people love to laugh and so do I. Matt Schulien said "the secret to success in this business is to have more fun than the people" As true today as ever. I have a great time doing magic, doing gags, ad libbing and laughing at my own jokes. As a result, they have a great time too.

Here is a piece I have a lot of fun with. The idea came from a forgotten packet card trick that Mr Ash sold me. I have expanded it to become "Magician's Truth or Dare" With a willing spectator I show a packet of cards with various 'dares' or 'truths' they must choose from. The first 2 are Admit a Lie and Tell Your Weight. (Those often go together!) The third card says Kiss the Magician. Here I bring out a tin of Altoid mints, open them up and take one out and eat it, and offer one to the helper. They sometimes take one, sometimes don't.

Continuing through the cards we find the next one is Win $100, the next one, Kiss the magician. Next is Juggle 3 Lemons, next is Kiss the Magician. Next to Say the Alphabet Backwards, then hey, what do you think the next one is? They say Kiss the Magician? No! It says Get A Kiss FROM the Magician. I bring out the mints again and have another, offering another to them. I have about 10 of these cards, and every other one is Kiss the Magician. Finally I turn over the cards, mix them a little, and they point to one. I take it out and lay it face down. "Before we see what you picked, let's see what you didn't get - look you don't have to tell your age, you don't have to stand on one leg, oh, sad to say you didn't win $100, what did you get?" when they turn over their card it reads "Get a Kiss FROM the Magician" I push the closed mint tin towards them and say "go ahead…" when I open the tin this time, it is now full of Hershey's Kisses!!

"Well, go ahead!" I say and they get a 'kiss' from the magician. Suffice to say I switch tins along the way. Simple to do, easy to understand, a great bar trick!! Try it yourself-----

Next week, increasing your tips!!

Message by Jay Scott Berry (Australia)

Our Top Story this week is the long-awaited release of the "Wonder Workshop. This is an original Masterclass on Magical Crafts, for performance, promotion and workshops. This unique Download includes over 20 colourful Designs with Craft Sticks, Tissue Paper and Chenille Sticks. I've been developing these over many years, and use them from strolling to stage and kids to corporate. They are delightful, keepsake gifts that you make right before their eyes. From the practical side, they don't pop, are lightweight, portable and inexpensive, easily adaptable to different Holidays. With all the added Bling, Bells, Ribbons and Sparkles, they are especially suited to Christmas shows. Available now from www.DeVilleMagic.net

Friday's Episode of Illuminations was a huge hit, streaming to thousands across FB. My special guest was Professor Emeritus, Anthony Darkstone. Deftly balancing Magic and Mysticism, Science and Sorcery, we launched into an inspirational, motivational and thought provoking discussion which paid homage to Black Elk and Chief Seattle, Joseph Campbell and Carl Jung, Einstein and Neils Bohr. A huge thanks to Anthony and all the attendees. As always, this program is available to watch, at no charge, on the Academy FB Page.

This week's Illusioneering was another jam-packed episode which streamed to "The Art of Wonder" FB Group. Joined by the Celtic Conjurer, Scott Cuthbertson, we launched the "Wonder Workshop" Download. I began sharing these ideas and designs with Scott a year ago, so he spoke, from experience, about using them in his shows. Then we set the WayBack Machine to Scotland, 2004 and the 3rd "Palace of Magic" Festival. Since Scott was one of my performers, it was a perfect chance to reminisce about this amazing weekend event, which drew over 10,000 attendees! I showed many photos that have never been seen, including the construction of a gigantic Loch Ness Monster balloon sculpture, created by Royal Sorel. The full episode and photos are on the Group Page.

But wait, there's more! The 9th episode of GenoMania streamed to the Academy page. As always, this is an offbeat romp of magic mischief and mayhem. He gave us a sneak preview of his mind bending new version of "Solitaire Crossing", to be released next week. We discussed the extensive applications of the "Wonder Workshop" material, then I dropped some nice Bonus Ideas and Designs. The bar on the OMC keeps getting raised by amazing new entrants. Just 3 more weeks to submit your original video into the competition. More details on the DeVilleMagic Website.

Each week, for the last eight weeks, we have released another episode of Alan Watson's "Seven Secrets to Success for Magicians and Entertainers". Today, I posted the last one, silently wishing that it would continue. Thank you, Alan, for so much wisdom, given freely. Perhaps the most fascinating thing about our Art, which is built upon secrets, is that the real secrets are hiding in plain sight. This Extraordinary Series is the perfect example.

10. Prime Time - John Carey #143

Message by John Carey (UK)

Prime Time is a particularly strong approach to the classic Just Chance or Bank Nite effect, that appears very fair. We will utilize George Sands brilliant principle of prime numbers that he published in an effect called Lucky Thirteen in Pallbearers Review Vol. 10 Number 10 in August 1975. If you haven't encountered this before, you are in for a treat.

You will need seven small pay style envelopes for my effect. I actually like to use C7 envelopes that you can purchase easily online. One of these is either subtly dotted or edge marked so that you can track it easily at a glance. Inside this envelope place a banknote/bill of high denomination. Inside each of the other six envelopes place a blank piece of paper. I like to close each envelope up with a self-adhesive dot as it facilitates easy opening at the business end of the routine.

Bring out your stack of envelopes and hand them to a participant for mixing. Upon return deal the envelopes onto the table forming a circle. Covertly track your marked envelope as you do this. Take out an old coin or lucky charm and casually drop it on top of the envelope after the
marked envelope in the tabled circle in readiness for Mr Sands brilliant forcing concept.

"Today we will play a little game that you have every chance of winning and by the same token I have every chance of losing. The seven envelopes you mixed reside on the table. Please freely call out any number between one and seven? Is four your lucky number by chance? Just a random number then. But you could have said any number, correct?"

Ask your helper to pick up the coin and use it to tap and count out loud to four in this example, starting with the envelope the coin was on. When they arrive at the fourth envelope have them turn it over, the self-adhesive dot coming into view. This sign posts that envelope. Have them count four more from there, beginning on the envelope just after the one just turned over, and turn over the fourth envelope of this count count. Have them repeat and continue exactly the same process until just one envelope remains unturned. Believe it or not, that will be your force envelope! It truly is a thing of beauty. All that remains is for your participant to open the
six envelopes they turned over to reveal blank slips of paper. Pick up your envelope and dramatically open it and remove the money to conclude a most deceptive and satisfying mystery.

You are only limited by your imagination with what you can create with the Sands concept. Explore it and have fun!

11. No Stone Unturned - Paul Stone - Article #39
--------------------------------------------
Message by Paul Stone (US)

I was chatting to a friend this week about how the current magic 'headliners' compared to the ones from the past. Without doubt the current 'Stars' include some amazingly talented performers, but for me there is one big difference between today's stand out magicians and those of yesteryear.

Most of the well-known magicians from years gone by all had one thing in common, a signature effect that they were famous for.

Harry Blackstone Jnr - Floating Light Bulb
David Copperfield (of course, still a current 'headliner') - Flying
Fred Kaps - Salt Pour
Finn Jon - Floating Ball
Robert Harbin - Zig Zag Lady
Jay Marshall - Lefty
Peter Reveen - Knight's Tour
Morettis - Cardboard Box Illusion
Paul Daniels - Chop Cup
Richard Ross - Giant Linking Rings
Silvan - Card Manipulation
Siegfried & Roy - Tigers, Lions, Elephant
Lance Burton - Bird Act
Shimada - Production of giant Fans
Albert Goshman - Salt Shaker (and not forgetting Sponge Balls!)

Mac King would probably join the list with his 'swallowing a goldfish' and vanishing head, and Kevin James has built his impressive reputation around his unique 'Sawing in Half' routine,
Johnny & Pam Thompson created a special niche with their wonderful 'Great Tomsoni & Co' Act, and Jeff Hobson is known more for his hilarious 'camp' style rather than a single trick, although both Johnny and Jeff heavily featured the Egg Bag in their acts.

Time alone will tell whether today's rising 'Stars' will join this illustrious list of performers.

Continues next week.

Written by the late Tommy Orchard (The Amazing Orchante)

The Amazing 'Orchanté' Saga - Volume II
- The Australian Years -
'The Mike Walsh Show'

Following our four day stint in Grafton for the Ex Services Club and the Jacaranda Festival, and having revelled in the glorious beauty of the Jacaranda trees, we headed back to Sydney on the
Friday (5th of Nov. 1976), caught up with some sleep then worked Saturday night at the Paddington north Town Hall; on the Sunday we had two shows at the Balmain RSA. What do they say - 'No rest for the wicked'! We weren't complaining, especially when on the following Thursday, the 11th, we had a repeat booking at the Channel 9 TV Studios for 'The Mike Walsh Show'. Two appearances in just over a month - we must have been doing something right,
and it caused quite a bit of chatter among the other Sight/Visual acts in 'Club Land', as it was unheard of for Speciality artists to appear on television twice, in such a short time. Singer's certainly, but Variety artistes? No Way!

Delving into the depths of my bottomless aluminium trunk the other day, I found a pile of magazines; they were the 'Encore' - The Magazine For Entertainers, Musicians And, Clubs And Agents. The magazine, founded by Sydney comedian - Dave Burke, had contributors from Sydney, West Australia, Queensland, Victoria, Las Vegas and London. On the cover of one, dated March 1978, are three photographs, one of the man himself - Mike Walsh, the conductor/musical director - Geoff Harvey and, talent/production co-coordinator, Mike Williams, more commonly known as - 'Shirley'! Inside the magazine, a four-page article complete with photographs of - The Mike Walsh Show.

Just the other day when I was Channel jumping on my Sky Digital Satellite System (which isn't easy when you have something like 800 or more channels to choose from), I came across some sort of 'Home Improvement' programme from Sydney and there, much to my surprise, was Mike - 'Shirley' Williams sawing up timber, hammering nails and wielding a paintbrush etc. My, my, work must be really tough in good old Sydney Town these days. What a comedown! From second 'Top Banana' on Australia's No.1 rated daytime TV show in the 70s, to becoming a carpenter! Mind you, I have to admit that he seemed to be doing a damn good job and let's face it, he was still working in television.

Getting back to the article about the Mike Walsh Show, it was a most interesting read from a 'Inside' point of view, and perhaps will be of interest to the many Australian, and any New Zealand entertainers, of my vintage, who may also have appeared on his show. At the point in time of writing this, Wednesday 4th June, 2003, time 12:30 pm, to be pedantic, may I remind you that I'm talking about 1976, and that the 'Mike Walsh Show', has long-gone from Australian television screens.

The Article

In terms of National exposure and recognition, there is nothing like an appearance - or better still, several - on the Mike Walsh Show. Entertainers - who otherwise have little or no access to
mass media at all, gain kudos and some fame in a profession where fame is vital for ultimate success?

The show has just entered its sixth year. As it settles into its daily pace until the next recess in December, there is no sign of its success fading - if anything, 1978 looks like a major year
for the show, and the people who make it work. Andrew L. Urban (the Editor of the Encore), in an exclusive interview, visited 'The Cottage', which is the heart and brain of the show.

Sue Farrelly is 'God'. She arrives early, and within minutes the humble rooms at 'The Cottage' are like the command centre of a major tactical operation. As Unit Manager, Sue has to co-ordinate
appointments and control details in a head-spinning atmosphere, while staying cool, and efficient. It's 9.20am. Mike Williams leaves the cottage to go over to the studio where the artists are about to arrive for rehearsals. Geoff Harvey is talking to the orchestra; it's a casual atmosphere.
