--------------------------------------------
Message by Shawn Farquhar (Canada)

Lost in the Shuffle is a feature-length documentary that takes a loving, cinematic look at how playing cards have become synonymous with magic, and the mysteries hidden in their art. The film which explores the relationship magicians have with playing cards will star Michael Vincent, Juan Tamariz, Alexandra Duvivier, Richard Turner, and Shawn Farquhar.

Jon Ornoy, the producer and director has spent almost two years of development, and is super-excited to start pulling back the curtain on what's planned because he thinks you're going to love it.

The film is currently in development and is raising funds on Kickstarter. In the past three weeks it has raised over 200% of the targeted funds it was seeking! Yes, over 400 backers have joined the project and will have their names in credits, some will even be Associate Producers and others Executive Producers! Magicians from all over the world have backed this project with rewards including dinner at the House of Cards in Nashville, an evening at the Magic Castle with Shawn, a private show with Richard Turner in San Antonio, and lots and lots of playing cards specially created for the production.

You can watch the trailer and learn more about the projects by visiting https://www.lostintheshufflefilm.com

Chicago Magic Lounge

We have over a dozen 'regular' magicians, and a couple of irregulars, too! Visit on a Tuesday evening and you will meet a Chicago bar and restaurant legend, Al James. Al has been performing in bars and restaurants for decades, and he's an encyclopedia of Chicago magic.
Originally from Cleveland Ohio, Al was a radio disc jockey. He moved into radio sales, which brought him to Chicago.

When he arrived he discovered some of the magic bars and became friends with many of the magicians. He had been interested in magic already, and enjoyed visiting his friends. Sadly, the radio company he was working for went out of business, and Al was left looking for work. Around the same time legendary bar magician Heba Habba Al injured his arm, and asked Al to fill in for him at the Pickle Barrel restaurant. He never looked back, and became a regular bar and restaurant performer, from which private parties and corporate events soon followed.

Al is probably best known for his many years at Schulien's restaurant, where he started in 1978. As a restaurant that featured magic every night, they needed a full stable of performers, and Al was in charge of booking all of them. Many magicians not only had their start thanks to Al, but also made a nice living doing it.

As a magician in Chicago a common question I was asked was "Do you work at Schulien's?" My usual answer was that the people working there have been there for years, so until one of them passes away, they have no openings! The truth is that I had the pleasure of working Schuliens on occasion, it was always an honor to be in the shrine of Chicago Bar magic. Schulien's was sold in 1999, but the magic was so popular the new owners kept magic on the weekends, and you can still see table and bar magic there today at 2100 W Irving Park Avenue in Chicago under its new name, O'Donovan's.

Al has also lectured on restaurant magic and released some of his creations through Magic Inc. Luckily, his knowledge has been captured in his book, Conjurer at the Table, A Master Course in Restaurant Magic published by Magic Inc. It's full of great advice about finding, pitching and keeping a restaurant magic gig. It includes many routines from his mentor and friend, Heba Habba Al that have never before been in print. Al has always been a great magician, a more important, a great friend to all. Stop into the Chicago Magic Lounge on a Tuesday and you'll make a new friend too!

Robert Harbin is renowned in Magic as an innovative performer and creator of the Zig Zag Illusion. As a child of 8, I was introduced to Robert through a completely different medium: Origami. I had developed a keen interest in the Art of Paper Folding in Kindergarten, mastering the basic designs. So, I discovered the genius of Harbin when my grandparents gave me a copy of his book, 'The Secrets of Origami". It was with great delight that I learned, some years later, that he was also a magician.

For me, Origami is a kind of magic, a Magical Craft, if you will, like animal balloons. Something ordinary is transformed, before our eyes, into something extraordinary. So I give credit to Robert for sparking a child's imagination, which, all these years later, has blossomed into the "Wonder Workshop" Download. In it, I present dozens of Magical Crafts and Puzzles, many original, that can be made easily and quickly, then given away. Using Pipe Cleaners, Craft Sticks, Tissue Paper and more, I show how to create colourful, keepsake gifts, ideal for Kids, Corporate, Live, Zoom, Street, Strolling and Stage. I make them for assistants onstage and, in the lobby, after the show. Naturally, each has my contact info. To create an indelible impression with a moment of delight, and as a powerful marketing tool, these magical designs have proved to be priceless.

This week's "Illusioneering" was a full-on, intensive session, starting with "CoinCentric" Bonus Material. I then gave a sneak preview into some of the "Wonder Workshop" 3D designs. We set the WayBack Machine to Germany 1998, with Pics and Videos of my Hexagon SFX Tables, designed to fold flat, pack light, set up quickly, and then become onstage Fog Fountains. Having toured with these for years, I showed, for the first time, the elegant simplicity of the design and, more important, the set-up for the double drop, dry ice fog machines. As the icing on the cake, I showed my all-purpose travel table design that's lightweight, packs flat and sets up in seconds. As always, "Illusioneering" streams to "The Art of Wonder" FB Group. www.facebook.com/groups/theartofwonder

Our other weekly Series is, of course, GenoMania! Each episode is a jolly romp of magical mischief, led by master of mayhem, Geno DeVille. This was an action packed episode that included more details on the Original Magic Competition, which continues to gather momentum. He announced the 50% off everything Sale at DeVilleMagic, which runs from now through Nov 27th. We talked about next week's release of "Wonder Workshop" and I teased a few more of the magical crafts. He then performed, and taught, a very clever card effect, based on a Marlo method. Finally, just to leave us in stitches, he presented his unique collection of Bee and Bicycle Knock-off decks. Absolutely hilarious!

Coming up is "Illuminations", Episode 3, with guest and fellow Mystic, Anthony Darkstone. Balancing Science with Mystery and Physics with Metaphysics, we explore the Magic Mindset. This program airs every full moon to The Academy of Illusions FB Page. You can catch the Livestream on Nov 19th at 1pm Los Angeles, 4pm NY, 9pm London, 8am (on the 20th) in Sydney and 10am Auckland.

Boldwave is my non-equivoque based method for Max Maven's Classic B'Wave. It uses a beautiful verbal strategy shared with me by my immensely talented friend, Mick Wilson. Go and grab three blue-backed blank-face cards and a red-backed Queen of Spades and let's have some
fun!

I will firstly give you my script, which in turn will impart the method, as you will see...

"Mick, right here, right now we are only this far away from the twilight zone. I want you to imagine these four cards are the Queens in all their majestic glory. Please hold them. A deck of cards consists of four suits: the black suits, Clubs and…? (he says Spades) That's right and of course the red suits, Diamonds and Hearts. Please cover that packet with your other hand. We will work with one of those Queens. Which one did you say? Ah, OK Spades is fine, but any card is possible.

I will now attempt three impossible things. Firstly I will attempt to make your Queen of Spades turn over. Please spread your cards. That's just warming up. Next I just cast a shadow and make your card change. To the untrained eye it appears that nothing has changed, but please turn your card over. Aha! Your card changed its back to red. Finally I will make the other ladies of the Royal Kingdom fade away. Just a snap and it's done. Turn them over. Like I said
at the start, the twilight zone!"

The setup is easy. Turn your three blue-backed blank-faced cards facedown and slip the red-backed Queen of Spades face-up second from the bottom and square up. Bring the packet out and begin your opening monologue, executing an Elmsley count as you do, the last card going to the bottom. This of course keeps the face-up Queen of Spades hidden. Ask your participant to extend a palm up hand and give them the packet to hold. To force the Queen of Spades, we simply use a hanging statement exactly as per the script above.

They will say Spades naturally. I then shift the focus and ask them to cover their packet with their other hand. Your work is done and now it's pure effect, as you present the three phase climax of their card turning over, changing its back colour and finally the faces of the other Queens being revealed to be blank/faded away. When you execute the hanging statement force, be calm and natural as if you are not in the moment and are simply having a casual conversation about the suits of the deck. A calm and casual demeanor and confidence will do the rest for you...

Over the past thirty years I've lectured at many magic clubs in UK, USA, and in Europe, and I've also booked a lot of lecturers for the IBM British Ring, and for my local magic society, the Liverpool Mahatma Magic Circle of which I have been a member for, dare I say it, more than 50 years!

I have been based out in Las Vegas for twelve years now, but I still consider the Mahatma to be my 'local' magic club.

I've been fortunate to book some fantastic lecturers, names that immediately come to mind include Johnny Thompson, Harry Lorayne, Gaetan Bloom, Jeff Hobson, Juan Tamariz, Johnny Paul, Alan Shaxon, Bob Read, and Paul Daniels.

I rarely attend magic lectures these days, mainly because I find it difficult to sit still often for two hours or more. I don't blame this on the quality of the lecturers but because as a Show and Event Producer for forty years I've always been used to constantly walking around and checking on every little detail of the event or show that I'm working on.

However, last week here in Las Vegas, a good friend of mine invited me to attend a lecture by Joshua Jay and I agreed to go along.

The lecture was due to start at 7pm and we arrived at 6.45pm to find the room well filled and Joshua seated at the front performing some really strong magic. I presumed that somehow we'd got the timings wrong and the lecture had already started.

In fact, the lecture hadn't begun, Joshua was just filling in time but still fooling the pants off everyone! And if I needed any further convincing that the lecture would be good, the appearance of Mac King in the audience was the clincher!

Joshua started his lecture by sharing what the main aims of his lecture were; firstly to entertain, and then to hopefully have everyone present leave with a new routine they could use, or an idea that they could incorporate into their shows.

Anyone who admits, as Joshua did in his lecture, to spending 95% of his life creating, working on and performing card tricks is definitely serious about his craft. He has been involved in magic for most of his life, having been mentored by some of the best magicians in the world, and now, of course, together with Andi Gladwin, he runs a very successful magic company, Vanishing Inc.

I'm not going to attempt to describe the lecture in detail, save to say that it consisted mostly of card work, with seemingly each effect topping the previous one with many subtleties and unexpected endings. Josh explained everything and made it all look so simple. In truth, he is a master of his craft, and every routine is honed to perfection. The result of hours of practice and dedication.

And whilst I don't think that I'll be trying out any of his routines, Josh did share one presentation idea that I will definitely use, so apart from enjoying the two hours which incidentally flew past, and also being thoroughly entertained, he had achieved exactly what he had set out to do.

The only slight criticism that I had, is that unless you were seated in the front row, it wasn't easy to see everything that Joshua did. I understand that it is difficult for a local magic club to afford a venue with tiered seating, but when you book a magician who predominantly performs card tricks, it is almost a prerequisite to have video screens, especially when that magician is as talented as Joshua Jay.

If Joshua is lecturing or performing at a venue near you, I highly recommend that you support him. You won't be disappointed.

12. The Orchante Saga - Beginnings
-------------------------------------
Written by the late Tommy Orchard (The Amazing Orchante)

Z - Special Unit

The operation, jointly planned by Australian and British Commandos and Intelligence Officers, was to take place at the same time when the Salamaua, Lae and Finschafen operations were
taking place against the Japanese in New Guinea. Creating total upheaval and chaotic disruption to Japanese shipping was determined to be an essential factor in the success of these operations. So great was the secrecy of 'Operation Jaywick', that Major Bob Page of GRAFTON, New South Wales, Australia, died in a later operation without knowing he had been decorated for his part in it. For nine months the party trained at a secret camp on the Queensland coast.

The three canoes with their six raiders apiece, reached Dongas at 8:30 on September 22nd. The gruelling and perilous long paddle necessitated a day of rest for the canoeists; the next day
Singapore Harbour was reconnoitred for likely targets, and during their five-day surveillance, there was never less than 100,000 tons of shipping present in the harbour.

On September 24th the three canoes attempted infiltration of the harbour but unfavourable tides forced them to reject the mission. During this entire period the raiders were under the constant
threat of being detected by the numerous and active Japanese water and shore patrols. The next night the base of operations was altered to Palau Sambu where the tides were more favourable
and on the night of the 26th September the successful raid was launched. Canoe No.1 reached a 10,000-ton tanker and two limpet mines were attached to her hull, one at the place of the engine
room and another on her propeller shaft. Canoe No.2 twice crossed the boom of the harbour in search of worthy targets, finally selecting three of the most tempting - two 5,000 ton freighters,
and the 6,000 ton 'Taisyo Maru'. Canoe No.3 stealthily examined ships and sentries along the lighted wharves before selecting the modern freighters - 'Nasusan Maru' and 'Yamataga Maru'.

The attacks began soon after 8:00 pm. At dawn, the canoes were back at their operations base camp and there the crews settled back to watch the forthcoming fireworks. Seven separate
explosions were heard between 5:15 am and 5:50 am and both sea and air patrols were observed setting out searching for the attackers. At dusk on 27th September the raiders set out for their rendezvous with Krait, which was cruising in the vicinity of Pompong Island and, despite the frantic and exhaustive air and sea searches by the enraged Japanese, the canoeists slipped through the net and made their rendezvous.

Lieutenant Carse and the seven-member crew of Krait had been waiting and playing cat and mouse with Japanese patrols for 16 anxious days when all of the raiders were picked up safely. The Krait then stole away unnoticed bound for Australia where there were one or two close calls along the way - such as being interrogated by an inquisitive enemy destroyer, but she reached Australia without the loss of a single man (a remarkable achievement for such a hazardous mission); the seemingly impossible 'Operation Jaywick' had been a resounding success.

After the Singapore raid Krait was sent to Darwin to join the Lugger Maintenance Patrol of the famous Z Special Unit. At the end of WWII she was taken over by the occupation authorities at
Labuan Island (Victoria) off British North Borneo (Sabah) and sold to a local trading company, which for the next twenty years used her to haul timber down the Jungle Rivers of Borneo.

In 1963 The 'Krait Committee' was formed in Sydney, with the intention of bringing her back to Australia for permanent preservation. The Royal Australian Navy (RAN) donated to the fund
and, with the aid of newspaper appeals etc. money was raised; so it was that in March 1964 a rather battered Krait arrived in Brisbane aboard the P&O ship Nellore.

ANZAC Day 1964, Krait sailed unpretentiously into Sydney Harbour, escorted down Port Jackson by an armada of small craft. Received by the State Governor at historic Farm Cove, she was dedicated as a - 'Floating War Memorial', and then presented to the Volunteer Coastal Patrol to use in training and rescue work. She is now settled serenely at the National Maritime Museum in Darling Harbour, Sydney. The plucky little fishing boat is home to stay.

Epilogue

As I mentioned at the beginning of this epoch, we had a four day booking at the Ex Services Club in Grafton, and that the club had previously arranged, in conjunction the Jacaranda Festival
Committee, for the 'KRAIT' to be sailed up from Sydney to be 'In Attendance' on the Clarence River: 'To Honour The Memory Of The Late - Major Bob Page'. It is through Bob Page's heroic activities in collusion with the Krait (along with the rest of the brave men who were part of Top Secret 'Operation Jaywick'), that Grafton will forever be a part of Australia's naval history.

I had the privilege to been personally invited aboard this legendary craft by two of the original members of 'Operation Jaywick', whom I had met after a show one night at the Ex Services Club (whose names I am ashamed to say, I have long forgotten), who took me for a 'sail'; and as we chugged down the river, regaled me with tales of some of their hair- raising exploits, as we downed a few cans of - 'The Amber liquor'! That is why the Krait is special to me.

To this day, I feel humbled to have been invited by two of the heroes of the Krait, to tread on the same teak planking as the late major bob page of Grafton, and the rest of their companions had, as they valiantly fought the Japanese - sixty years ago!

Continues next week …
