6. Around The Lounge By Jeff Bibik #5
--------------------------------------------
Message by Jeff Bibik (USA)
Chicago Magic Lounge
ChicagoMagicLounge.com
The
Chicago Magic Lounge is as much an art gallery as it is
a theater. In this installment I'll talk about the many
Posters that decorate our space.
The
Lounge features two dozen original posters of magic's greats.
Starting in the bar there are 2 large 3 sheet posters. Standard
measurements for these are 41 inches by 81 inches. They're
huge, as are the fees for framing them! We have Thurston
doing a levitation and Vonetta. The Thurston dates from
1908 and Vonetta is from 1910. Not too much is known about
Vonetta, she was a quick change act we believe to be from
England. We have a small Chung Ling Soo and "his 10
assistants", his fingers. An American who passed himself
off as Asian he was killed doing the bullet catch. Across
from the bar is our oldest poster, a Keller poster from
1894 with him performing a spirit handkerchief cabinet.
Moving
into the Blackstone cabaret there is of course a 1 sheet
of Blackstone, complete with imps. In our upper mezzanine
is another later Thurston 3 sheet, this one featuring Jane
Thurston from the 1920s.
The
long hallways alongside the cabaret hold many of our larger
posters. We have 3 sheets from Carter, (we have 3 different
Carters, 2 are 1 sheets) George, Alexander, (The man who
knows), and Albini. He was a Polish magician who lifted
his name from another working magician. Hard to believe
magicians stealing something, isn't it? It's an odd piece,
with only his portrait, no props or routines. He died in
Chicago during a run of his show. Blackstone acquired many
of his props when he was still known as Fredrick.
Dante
is represented by 2 posters, a traditional lithograph and
a show card with Moi Yo Miller. Maro also has 2 posters
shown; he left behind a load of posters. An autographed
Doug Henning graces the back hallway, another Henning is
in the performer's green room.
One
mystery poster in or collection is from 1917 and is of Will
Bland. We don't know much about him but believe he was Australian.
We'd love to know more about him, if any of you know more
please email me, Jeff@Bibik.com.
Finally,
we have the only full sized copy of the Chicago Magicians
Round Table drawing. The Round Table met daily for many
years in restaurants around downtown Chicago. In 1965 a
montage picture was made by an artist named Salvatore Salla
featuring 108 members from across the years. Many famous
names are on that list, and the original hangs at The Magic
Castle in Hollywood. This copy was a gift to us from the
Magic Castle on our second anniversary.
So at every turn of 5050 N Clark Street in Chicago you can
see some of the history of magic, from Chicago and across
the globe - plan to visit on your next trip to Chicago.
We're
open 7 nights a week at 5PM. I'll see you on the other side
of the bar! The Amazing Bibik
Next
week - some of our smaller treasures.

8. News From The Academy Of Illusions
--------------------------------------------
Message by Jay Scott Berry (Australia)
Victor
Hugo famously said, "Nothing is more powerful than
an idea whose time has come." It seems an appropriate
thought to ponder as we look back on our first two months
at the Academy.
In
that time, we've presented 30 Webcasts, some Magi-Only and
some Muggle-Friendly. All were streamed, without charge,
to the FB Page and Art of Wonder Group. On the performance
side, we presented 6 Private Shows and 1 Public Gala. On
the teaching side, I conducted 16 ZoomStorming Masterclasses
and 3 Club Lectures. We also Streamed 4 of Alan Watson's
"Seven Secrets to Success" Series. Finally, as
if to prove, beyond any doubt, that this is "The Golden
Age of Mentoring", I taught 45 Private Coaching Sessions.
Every one of these presentations were Virtual, streamed
live to the 4 corners of the earth. Congratulations to all
who assisted in these events and many thanks to all attendees.
This
week's "Illusioneering'' offered an exclusive sneak-peek
at my next Digital Download, "CoinCentric". I
dropped more bonus material for the "Get Reel"
Download. We took the WayBack Machine to Kuala Lumpur 2010,
to discover how I ended up on Malaysian Postage stamps.
Finally, I continued teaching Magical Crafts with more cool
giveaways using Pipe Cleaners.
Speaking
of "Get Reel", the rave reviews continue to pour
in. As reported last week, this project condenses 40 years
of real-world experience into a 70 minute Masterclass on
Reel & Silk Magic. Chris Edwards just posted his 100%
+++ Review, which includes the 5 Performances. You can watch
it on his Youtube Channel: https://youtu.be/Lzlt04kkrCE
Our
resident Master of Mischief and Mayhem, Geno DeVille, is
away performing this week at a Magic Festival. His show,
GenoMania, will resume next week with the official launch
of "CoinCentric."
So,
as we enter our 3rd month, it appears that we are almost
up-to-speed. Looking ahead, in addition to our regular programs,
we've got "Illuminations" on the 19th, the 2nd
"Excelsior Gala" on the 21st and "The Solstice
Concert" on December 21st. More details on these in
the coming weeks.
Back
in mid-August, Director Tommy Chiang and I agreed that it
was time to launch the Academy of Illusions. We began with
a basic set of founding principles and the idea to use the
most advanced technologies to present, and teach, the most
Ancient of Arts. It certainly seems it's an idea whose time
has come.

9. Did Ya Get The Odd One? - John Carey #140
-------------------------------------------
Message by John Carey (UK)
http://www.johncareymagic.co.uk/
Did
ya get the odd one? is a moveless colour changing deck based
purely on perception and subtlety. There's no over-proving
or calling undue attention to colour, as you often see with
this effect. You will require a rainbow deck. I use the
beautiful Bicycle Spectrum deck by Cosmo Solano. On top
of this deck place a red backed bicycle card, and then on
the very top place two red backed Jokers. Pop the deck inside
the box. On the back of a business card write "You
will get the odd one." Bring out the deck and remove
from the box.
They
see red cards coming from a red box. Table the box and mention
you won't need the Jokers. Flip the top two cards face-up
showing Jokers, remove them and pocket them. Another subtle
show of red backs. Orientate the deck with the faces towards
the audience and execute a slip shuffle, retaining the red
backed card at the rear of the deck. Square up and table
the deck face-down, a red back in view on top. Remove the
business card and table it, message side down.
"I'm
going to have you make some choices. As I spread through
the deck please indicate any four cards." Suiting actions
to words, turn the deck face-up, slowly make a hand-to-hand
spread and have four different cards touched. Place each
of these four cards face-up on the table forming a row.
Square up the deck and table it face-down for a moment,
with the red-backed card still showing on top.
"I'd
like you to choose one of these four cards in an interesting
way. Firstly, just tell me one of them you don't want?"
They point to one of the four face-up cards on the table
and you pick the tabled deck up, holding it in face-up dealer's
grip - you cut away a packet from the face and drop it on
top of their eliminated card. "Fine, it's gone. Another
please?" You repeat the action, cutting a face-up packet
on top of their next eliminated card.
"Finally,
from the two that remain, just tell me which one you don't
want one last time, leaving your ultimate choice right there."
Turn both hands palm down and point to the two tabled cards,
enabling one subtle final show of a red back. Turn both
hands palm-up and swing cut half the deck into the left
hand. The right-hand packet is dropped on top of the final
card they don't want and then this packet is picked up and
dropped on top of the left hand's cards, thus secretly or
openly cutting the deck. Table the face-up deck.
"So
you made all the choices and wanted this card. Please turn
over my prediction and read it out." They do and you
will get a puzzled reaction. "Turn your card over.
See, it really is the odd one. Wouldn't it have been very
odd if you had chosen any other card?" Basically we
are leading them down the path here before turning on the
sprinklers. Pick up the deck and turn it over and execute
a large wide ribbon spread showing that the backs of all
the cards have changed into various colours of the spectrum
and your mystery is complete.
Recent
road tests for my lab rats in the pubs locally have proven
that people simply don't see this coming. I think it's purely
because the perception and subtlety at play lays all the
groundwork ready for the visually shocking full deck colour
change. Now it's yours so get out there and smoke 'em!

11. No Stone Unturned - Paul Stone - Article #36
--------------------------------------------
Message by Paul Stone (US)
I'm
writing this week's article in my home city of Liverpool
in England. I've travelled back for a quick six day visit
having swapped the relative warmth and sunshine of Las Vegas
and its 80 degree heat, for the cold, windy and wet November
weather here in the UK.
Liverpool
is a wonderful and very vibrant city but the rain has been
really heavy and almost non-stop since I arrived!
I
was able to drive North to Blackpool, the venue of the world's
largest magic convention which will happily be taking place
once again next February.
At
their last Convention in 2019 (I'm not counting the virtual
one earlier this year), I brought Lance Burton and Friends
over from Las Vegas, and the 5,000 attendees absolutely
loved watching him perform and seeing him around the convention.
Although
the 2022 convention probably won't have as many people register,
there are still likely to be at least 2500 people there,
together with the usual impressive list of dealers from
all around the world.
The
three convention organisers on behalf of Blackpool Magicians
Club, Russ Stevens, Russ Brown and Guy Barratt are putting
together yet another exciting line-up of talent. And there
are quite a few new names as well as some familiar faces.
Here
are just some of the artists who will be appearing : Christian
Farla, Andrew Basso, Ehrlich Ocompo, Mario Lopez, Ruben
Fernandez, Mark Oberon and Philip Hitchcock. Philip will
be performing his floating fireball which looks fantastic.
I'm
told that there are also a couple of surprise performers,
so watch this space!
I'll
be back at the convention and this time I'll be bringing
over a very special lady from Las Vegas, Lynette Chappell.
Lynette was the leading lady and 'Evil Queen' in all of
Siegfried & Roy's spectacular shows in Las Vegas, and
Japan.
Her
life, and the background stories she has, having starred
with Siegfried & Roy for over 45 years are unique and
amazing, and I'll be interviewing her as well as showing
some incredible clips from their record breaking show at
the Mirage and also the 'Beyond Belief' Show at the Frontier
Casino.
Lynette
is a class act and is very excited to be coming to Blackpool.
It is her first ever visit to any British Magic Convention,
so it is another real coup for the Blackpool convention
team.

12. The Orchante Saga - Beginnings
-------------------------------------
Written by the late Tommy Orchard (The Amazing Orchante)
Grafton
- Plus A True Legend
Monday
November 1st 1976. We have now been domiciled in Sydney
Australia for exactly three months to the day. We had arrived
in the country totally unknown and within that short space
of time had been integrated into the Club circuit and, Wonders
of Wonders, had also performed on Australia's most Networked,
Live TV Show; all with the help of - 'The Powers That Be'
(God, or whoever, whatever you believe in - if anything),
that had put us into contact with Bill Godfrey and hence
Clive Herring and consequently our Agent/Manager, Brian
Fogarty.
Also
on that Monday the 1st, we had been booked for our first
engagement outside of Sydney - four nights at the Grafton
Ex Services Club. The rich agricultural capitol of Grafton
is 665
Km. (Approx. 407 miles) north up the Pacific H/way, and
straddles the Clarence River. In the first week of every
November, Grafton celebrates its 'Jacaranda Festival'; approaching
the town, a strange, light purple haze seems to reflect
off the sky - then as you enter the outskirts, you are greeted
by the sight of flowering Jacaranda trees that 'magically'
multiply into hundreds
then thousands, all blooming in magnificent splendour. Every
street as far as you can see, is lined with them and the
astonishingly breathtaking vision of the beautifully exquisite
mauve/lilac colour, the sheer enchantment of it all is something
that, believe me - remains with you forever!
As
part of the Jacaranda festival that year, the Grafton Ex
Services Club had arranged for a very special fishing boat,
to be in attendance on the river. So what was so special
about this boat, and what was its connection to Grafton,
and why is it 'special' to me? Are you ready for a history
lesson? It's an action-packed, enthralling story of brave
men with real guts that would make a great film; take note
any Film Directors/Producers out there who may be reading
this.
Here
Is The Story Of An Australian Legend
Krait
In
the hard times of 1942 and 1943, when the Australians, British
and Americans were struggling to contain Japanese expansion,
some vessels became little legends in their own right. Kuru,
a minute motorboat of just 55 tons, made a hero of herself
on the "Timor Ferry Service" in early 1942, along
with the auxiliary patrol vessel 'Vigilant'. She ferried
refugees, commandos, stores and equipment between Fremantle
and small, dark bays on the Timor coast - a round trip of
more than 6,000 kilometres. But perhaps the best known was
Krait, originally the Japanese Kofoku Maru - a 70-foot wooden
motor fishing vessel of 1920 vintage. She was seized at
Singapore and sailed away before the place fell to the Japanese
on 15th February 1942. An excellent type of vessel for raiding,
she was taken into service and carried out many daring intrusions
into enemy territory. The most famous was Operation "Jaywick",
the successful insertion of canoe-borne Commandos into Singapore
Harbour (26th September 1943).
Of
all the units to serve in World War II, one of the most
unusual and in all probability the bravest was the extremely
top secret and highly trained 'Z Special Unit', often referred
to,
incorrectly, as simply - 'Z Force'. In actual fact, they
were two entirely different units. All of its missions were
cloaked in absolute secrecy and even now, sixty years after
World War II, little is known of its 182 clandestine missions.
Although most of the recruited men of Z Special Unit were
Australian, there were also Dutch, New Zealanders, Canadians,
French, Americans, Malays, Chinese and Indonesians, about
as different a bunch of guys as you could get. Recruited
from various branches of the Armed Forces, all were experts
in particular fields of covert procedures.
Of
all the missions 'Z Special Force' carried out, two raids
against Japanese shipping in Japanese Occupied Singapore
Harbour were the most fantastic and well known. The first
of these, and
the one that is relevant to this story, was: Operation 'Jaywick,
on the 26th September 1943 (I was eighteen days old), resulted
in 38,000 Tons of enemy shipping sunk. The second - Operation
'Rimau' on the 11th September 1944, involved the use of
small one-man submarines. The raiders, compromised before
arriving at their destination - were consequently captured
and ceremonially
beheaded by the Japanese.
