"Why should I register for MAGIC Live?"
It's a fair question, and one that I get asked regularly.
My guess is that if you asked all of our 1,600 attendees,
you'd probably get 1,600 different answers. Maybe more,
as I'm sure most people have more than one reason. I know
I do. Here are two of them:
Community
There are 1,599 friends waiting for you. Some are old friends
and others are yet-to-be friends. MAGIC Live is carefully
structured to nurture these friendships, with opening and
closing parties, two-hour breaks for lunch and dinner, and
an open-24-hour lounge.
Content
While "Community" is formed by those attending,
"Content" is generated by the performers, the
presenters, the vendors, and the entire MAGIC Live team.
And while we are lucky enough to attract amazing people
- the Who, if you will - that's only the beginning. What
sets MAGIC Live apart is What we have them do for us and
How we present everything with state-of-the-art audio/visual
and custom-built venues.
If you've been with us before, then you know how MAGIC
Live is a combination of this amazing Content and even more
amazing Community.
If you have not, I encourage you to spend a few minutes
on the MAGIC Live website. There you'll find FAQs, plus
dozens of photos, explanations of our shows and tutorial
sessions, and even a few videos of our unique talks.

Message by Shawn Farquhar (Canada)
From October 19th, I am part of my first ever Kickstarter
project.
The Producer/Director of the feature length documentary,
Jon Ornoy, is doing a Kickstarter to support the film, Lost
in the Shuffle.
We have a bunch of cool perks to offer the magic community
including credit in the film and a custom made deck of cards
designed by me.
The reason I'm writing is to ask if you'd consider sending
an email today to your mailing list letting your community
know about the project.
We're working to create as much buzz in a single day as
possible, so I'm hoping my friends will help make that happen.
I know your community love magic and that this film will
be something they'll love.
You're probably like me and love to find out about magic
stuff when it's hot and new, so you'll be doing them a favour
as well.
The link to share with your community to watch the trailer,
learn about the film, and the Kickstarter this is the link:
www.lostintheshufflefilm.com
During this feature length documentary I will get to interview
four incredible card magicians:
Juan Tamariz
Michael Vincent
Alexandra Duvivier
Richard Turner

Short Synopsis
The histories of magic and playing cards have been intertwined
since the first recorded examples of sleight-of-hand tricks
the early 1500s. Over the ensuing centuries, and in particular
since the mid-1800s, their destinies have become inseparable,
and playing cards now figure into an estimated 60-70% of
all close-up magic performed. They're cheap, mass-produced,
and familiar, so on some level it's easy to understand why
they've become so pervasive, but is there more to it than
that? Is there something about the actual design of the
familiar suits and face cards that plays into the magician's
hands too?
For as common a household item as a deck of playing cards
is, few of us have stopped to consider the origins and symbology
of why they look the way they do. As a fourth generation,
and two-time world champion magician who learned how to
count and shuffle at the same time, it's not too surprising
that Shawn Farquhar would be exactly the kind of person
who would ask that question - and turn answering it into
an obsession. While there is an abiding theory that the
face cards are meant to represent legendary royalty of old,
like Julius Caesar or Alexander the Great, he believes that
the King of Hearts is meant to represent the lesser-known
King Charles VIII of France, whose brief reign ended with
his accidental death in 1498. Shawn, however, contends that
he was in fact the victim of a politically-motivated assassination
engineered by his wife, and that the story of this conspiracy
was encoded in the playing card designs that we're still
using today.
Pulling back the curtain not only on a potential cold-case
murder mystery centuries in the making, but the very psychology
of magic itself, Lost in the Shuffle brings together some
of the field's most gifted illusionists, historians, and
researchers, to get a keen insight into the tools and skills
that the modern magician employs to make us believe in the
impossible.

Chicago Magic Lounge
ChicagoMagicLounge.com
The Harry Blackstone Cabaret
The Blackstone cabaret is the main show room at The Chicago
Magic Lounge. When guests enter the secret door the first
thing noticed is how large the room is as the ceiling rises
up 30 feet. The 100 seats are spread among 5 levels, with
5 tables at the edge of the stage (Deluxe seats) and the
other tables comfortably placed around the room. The stage
is graced by a red velvet tableau curtain that draws up
to the corners of the proscenium. It is a somewhat small
stage with no wing space. Most illusions will not work here,
although we have seen the metamorphosis trunk. The back
stage entrance is stage right thru a soundproof hall into
the green room.
Our green room has a separate restroom, which is actually
the only part of the backstage that is actually green! Some
of the house magicians are given lockers, including me.
I like to customize my locker a bit, I was putting a small
shelf in it when someone asked if I was going to remodel
the entire locker. I said "sure, in fact I'm putting
in a hot tub!" So I filled a wooden ice bucket with
water, added a Barbie and a Ken doll, hung up some party
lights and had a real fiesta! Currently I am featuring a
grave yard scene complete with grim reaper and spooky strobe
light. Tiny grave stones commemorate magic things that are
(or should be) dead- The bra trick, cigarette acts, 'No,
the clean one..' etc. Mostly it's just for me.
Although not large our stage has seen some large names
in magic from around the world. Max Maven, Mac King, Fay
Presto, Ice McDonald, Piff, Luis Carreon, Arthur Trace,
Ryan Plunkett and so many more. A backstage wall has the
autographs of over 100 magicians. Our acts are different
every week from around the US and across the globe.
Our showroom opens an hour before each show for cocktail
service and table magic performed by a small army of close
up workers. Regular walk around performers include Justin
Purcell, Deven Brown, Nathan Cowell, Magic Sam, Rebecca
Spectre, Sean Masterson, Johnathan Koller, Mike O'Donnell
and many more. Just off stage right is our theater organ
with live music before the show.
With shows every night we mix it up a bit. Mondays is Music
and Magic with a jazz band on stage and magicians working
the tables. When the band breaks a magician will do a 20
minute spot on stage. Tuesdays are a showcase night with
new works and new effects being the focus on stage. Wednesday
is our Artist in Residence. Currently Nick Diffate is filling
the bill for 3 months. Before our 504 day intermission Lucy
Darling was in residence for a sold out run. Thursdays through
Sunday are the Signature Shows, hosted by the very talented
Jan Rose. Again, magicians tableside and 2 acts on stage
that each do a half hour.
He's my pro tip for this week - use everything you have
available to you at a venue. If there is any type of stage
or platform, use it. Your audience will benefit. If there
is a microphone, use it. I've heard performers say oh I
don't need a mic, I'm loud enough. No you're not, you just
lack mic technique. A microphone is not just for being loud,
but being heard. Practice using a microphone, it's simple.
The microphone gives you power and authority. Most of all,
if there is a curtain, use it. We have a beautiful curtain
yet we also have a semi regular performer that walks on
stage from the side of the audience. While we all make our
artistic decisions, walking in from the side is not as magical
as coming out through a curtain. Only very special people
come through a curtain. If you are standing on the side
you're just some guy they think is the manager. Use everything
they have, because too often we're in a banquet room with
nothing!
We're down the street from a cemetery. Last week a skeleton
walked in to our bar and said May I have a beer and a mop?
Next week, the 654 Club.

The Magic of David Copperfield XI: The Explosive Encounter
CBS television special from 1989, Origami Illusion. @TheDavidCopperfield1
discusses his Origami presentation and artistic choices
with @Josephine Lee, @Carisa Hendrix, @Dania Díaz
& @Billy Kidd Magician in this special panel Blast from
the Past vintage video series on @Magical Women with Connie
Boyd
David Copperfield introduced a number of presentational
changes to Origami created by Jim Steinmeyer in 1989, devised
by his choreographer, co-director and on-stage assistant
Joanie Spina. The choreography, background music and presentational
patter used in this version have all since been widely copied
by other performers.
Origami is a magic stage illusion with a Japanese paperfolding
theme, designed by Jim Steinmeyer. It was originally performed
in 1986 by Canadian illusionist Doug Henning, using a working
prop constructed by illusion builder John Gaughan. Illusionist
David Copperfield later introduced presentational changes
that would be widely copied by other performers.
As indicated in Magical Women's Extra Special "All-Star
Guest Panel Talk" with guest celebrity co-host David
Copperfield. This illusion is an excellent example of David
making an existing illusion distinctive to his presentation
and the support of a talented team which included Joanie
Spina.

7. News From The Academy Of Illusions
--------------------------------------------
Message by Jay Scott Berry (Australia)
Aldous Huxley said, "The secret of genius is to carry
the spirit of the child into old age, which means never
losing your enthusiasm." I like to juxtapose that quote
with Jay Marshall's famous line, "When I was a child,
I said when I grow up, I want to be a magician. They said,
Sorry, you can't do both!" In different ways, both
quotes address the eternal, childlike, Spirit of Magic.
That was our common thread this week at the Academy, as
we streamed five programs to enthusiastic FB and Zoom audiences.
The top story is the release of our first Digital Download,
"Get Reel". This project on Reel and Silk Magic
is 45 years in the making, and the content has been developed
over thousands of shows. In 1977, I saw a TV Magic Special
hosted by Dick Cavett. Besides having the legendary Slydini
as a star, he also performed a simple silk through ring
effect that made an indelible impression, inspiring me to
discover the principles behind it. With this new Download,
I've taken that dream, and spirit, of a child into old age,
with great enthusiasm: Five original routines and 30 moves
are detailed in this 70 minute intensive session, using
Mic Stand, Cane, Wand, Rope, Ring and more.
I also teach the all-important Basic Training, which includes
choosing and preparing the reel as well as many innovations
I've made. This project has also taken me 45 years of training
in video production to create, from bulky video carts to
1080p digital, which is sent wirelessly, around the globe,
to spark the imaginations of future generations. As Paul
Simon said, "This is the age of miracles and wonders!"
Today's webcast of Geno Mania was muggle friendly and focused
on the premiere of "Get Reel". Geno played three
of the performance videos from the Download, including the
premiere of "Wanderful". As usual, he also delighted
us with his own whimsical illusions, one which produced
a small pink clay pig as a prediction. Trust me, you gotta
see it to believe it! Luckily, you can watch the recording
on the DeVilleMagic.net website and the Academy FB Page.
Earlier today, we also streamed the second episode of Illuminations,
featuring my guest, Professor Roger Blakiston. As some of
you know, Roger is a long time pro, from England, now living
in Sedona, Arizona. What you may not know is that he is
also an extraordinary poet, with five published books. Keeping
with the show's theme of "The Magical Mindset",
Roger and I discussed his personal life journey and how
he has taken the spirit of a child into old age. He also
presented three of his magical poems, each with a dramatic
flair that only could have been delivered by a true showman.
On Tuesday, we streamed the 3rd episode of Illusioneering
to The Art of Wonder Group. This show is the ideal opportunity
to talk, in detail, about the principles of magic, to magicians.
I gave a behind the scenes look at the 'Get Reel" production
as well as setting the Way Back Machine to 1996 to talk
about the first "Total Eclipse" booklet and working
with Joachim Solberg while touring Germany.
The seventh Zoom Storming Masterclasses went off, on schedule,
also focusing on Reel and Silk Magic. As always, I packed
a lifetime of experience into the 90 minute Masterclasses,
teaching everything from choosing and preparing the reel
to practical applications for close-up to stage, kids to
corporate and live to Zoom. This Saturday's Sessions will
be dedicated to Topit Mastery.
Finally, the icing on our magical cake is the second episode
of Alan Watson's "Seven Secrets" series, posted
on The Art of Wonder Group and Academy Page. In this series,
Alan presents a proverbial treasure trove of priceless business
information. I only wish I could have watched these when
I was just starting out.
Which brings us full circle, back to the Academy's mission:
To serve the Art and inspire generations to come. We stand
upon the shoulders of giants and are bound, by honour, to
see farther. As for me? I do that with great enthusiasm.
After all, why grow up when you can have so much fun being
a magician?

8. Drawing Closer - John Carey #139

Message by John Carey (UK)

Here's a nice piece of Mentalism I'm having fun with. Twenty
years ago if you'd have asked me if I would perform an effect
with a calculator, the answer would have been no. Another
thing to carry etc etc. But in this day and age with smartphones
everywhere - no such problem. We are going to use the venerable
1,089 force, well part of it, to drive the method engine
here with a simple but strong drawing duplication.
On a piece of card make a list of 20 random objects/designs
that can be drawn easily. The object at 18 is a boat. The
rest are truly random. Bring out the card and set it face-down
onto the table. "Sam, numbers are truly everywhere.
There's lottery numbers, phone numbers, registration
numbers and so on. Please open your phone and go to your
calculator. Imagine four different single digits morphing
onto the screen in front of you. Can you visualize them?
Type them in please. Now I want you to flip them on their
head. Press the minus key and type those same numbers in
reverse and then press equals please. So now you're thinking
of numbers that even you didn't know you'd be thinking about
two minutes ago. Finally, in your mind only, just add up
all four digits to form a one or two digit number. Then
turn your phone off."
Naturally, this forces 18 on our participant. Ask them
to pick up the card on the table and look at it. Comment
on how there's a list of different objects and designs on
it. Ask them to lock the thought of the object at their
secret number into their mind. Take out a business card
and a pen and have them hold your wrist. Now it's simply
a matter of getting psychic vibrations and gradually drawing
a boat to bring the effect home, duplicating their thought.

America's Got Talent: Extreme's Jonathan Goodwin Hospitalized
After Stunt Goes Wrong in Rehearsal
An accident on the set of America's Got Talent: Extreme
has left daredevil Jonathan Goodwin in the hospital with
critical injuries.
"During a rehearsal last evening for America's Got
Talent: Extreme, an accident occurred in which escape artist
Jonathan Goodwin was injured while performing his act,"
a spokesperson for the show tells TVLine. "He was responsive
and was immediately taken to the hospital where he is continuing
to receive medical care. Our thoughts and prayers go out
to him and his family as we await further updates on his
condition."
According to TMZ's initial report, Goodwin - who previously
competed in Season 15 of America's Got Talent, making it
all the way to the semifinals - was performing a stunt that
involved escaping from a straightjacket and falling onto
an air mattress from 70 feet in the air, all while avoiding
two swinging cars that were also suspended on either side
of him. Goodwin was reportedly crushed by the cars, causing
them to explode. Goodwin then reportedly fell to the ground
and hit his head, causing some people on set to think he
died.

10. No Stone Unturned - Paul Stone - Article #34
--------------------------------------------
Message by Paul Stone (US)
It is always nice to receive a surprise package in the
mail, and I was the lucky recipient of one this week. It
came from Gabe Fujuri in the form of a magnificent to me,
'Heroes of Magic' written by John Fisher and which Gabe
had edited and published.
If you are at all familiar with John's several previous
books, you won't need convincing that his latest is quite
simply fabulous. Not only does John go to incredible depths
in researching his subject, his writing style is always
engaging and he includes anecdotes and experiences that
he himself has personally shared with so many showbusiness
stars.
'Funny Way to be a Hero', The Magic of Lewis Carroll, 'Call
them Irreplaceable' and George Formby: The Ukelele Man,
are all brilliantly written and superbly produced.
I've known John for over 40 years and some of my favourite
magic memories were shared with him in the company of legendary
magicians including Johnny Paul, Ken Brooke, Fred Kaps,
and Harry Blackstone Jnr.
I was very fortunate to be asked by John when he was Head
of Variety at Thames TV to be Magic Consultant on the 'Best
of Magic'. And John asked me to help with The Fred Kaps
Magic Show on BBC TV, but The Parkinson Magic Show, also
on the BBC, is the show that stands out in my mind as one
of John's greatest achievements.
What a coup it was to produce a prime-time Christmas Special
with the UK's most celebrated Chat Show Host, Michael Parkinson,
featuring three very different world class talents in Fred
Kaps, Richiardi Jnr and Ricky Jay.
I remember that show for two particular reasons, firstly,
spending most of the week searching for butterflies with
Ricky Jay, and then watching the incredible professionalism
of Richiardi Jr dealing with a pretty major prop malfunction
during his spot in this live TV Show as if it had never
happened. The audience had no clue that there was a problem!
So, how can I adequately describe 'Heroes of Magic'? Well,
to start with, the book has over 400 pages, and is packed
from beginning to end with wonderful photographs, and colour
posters.
But it is the 'Heroes' themselves that truly stand out.
Sadly, as pointed out in the 'Afterword' by Paul Kieve,
the only 'Hero' still living is the incredible Arturo Brachetti,
so this book is definitely an homage to some of the greatest
magical performers to have ever tread the boards.
The names are literally a 'who's who' of magic. It would
be wrong for me not to name them all. David Devant, Professor
Harry Woodley, Cardini, Slydini, Robert Harbin, Maurice
Fogel, John Calvert, Al Koran, Jay Marshall, David Nixon,
Chan Canasta, Tommy Cooper, Borra, Billy McComb, Paul Potassy,
Richiardi Junior, Fred Kaps, Channing Pollock, Hans Moretti,
Rene Lavand, Harry Blackstone Jr, Paul Daniels, Siegfried
& Roy, Ricky Jay, and Arturo Brachetti. And not forgetting
George Burns. But you'll have to read the book to find out
why!
I count myself lucky to have known and enjoyed the company
of many of these iconic magicians, and whilst it was a genuine
trip down memory lane and very nostalgic for me to relive
their amazing talents in this exceptional book, it was a
little upsetting to know that all of them, with the exception
of Arturo, are now no longer with us to enjoy.
However, they have all left us a wonderful legacy and John
Fisher's 'Heroes of Magic' will keep their memory alive
for all time.
He deserves huge congratulations and whether you are a
performer, collector or just love magic, this is a book
that should be in your magic library.

Message by Bruce Kalver (US)
Michael King, Producer, Director, Actor, Magician has passed
away. He was a kind friend who was brilliant at his craft,
and extremely helpful when you needed him.
For an issue of Friends of Magic magazine, I wrote to him
to answer a question about the portrayal of magic in film.
I needed a paragraph. The next morning, I received a 5 page
dissertation that he stayed up to write.
He and I shared our love for some films especially The
Great Race and he was going to take me to see the car on
my next visit.
He is the only one I allowed to film my routine "You're
There."
I am going to miss his posts of film stills on Facebook.
I am going to miss his friendship.
Too young. Too soon. He was 62.

12. The Orchante Saga - Beginnings
-------------------------------------
Written by the late Tommy Orchard (The Amazing Orchante)
Australia
Prior to our three-night show with the infamous Don Lane,
Clive had said, "What you need is a good agent"!
As I mentioned earlier, Clive booked all his acts through
various agents, instead of relying on just one to take care
of all the clubs entertainment. According to Clive, all
agents are crooks (ain't that the truth), but there are
a few honest ones among them, the problem is finding them.
Usually, you manage to find all the 'bad eggs' who will
do anything to rip you off and make an unreasonable amount
of money, your money, in the process, before you find the
one who believes in you and your act, and has your interests
at heart, as well as his own. A very rare breed indeed!
Fortunately, for us, Clive had sorted the wheat from the
chaff years ago.
Of all the agents in Sydney, the one he recommended for
us was: Brian Fogarty - Theatrical Productions Pty Limited.
Unbeknownst to us, Clive had rung Brian and told him that
he had, "From New Zealand, The Newest, Hottest Specialty
Act to hit the Australian/Sydney club scene", and that
we were the support act for Australia's 'Biggest TV Star',
at his club; he arranged for Brian to come and watch our
act on the last night, knowing full well that we would be
'Right in the Groove' with the Don Lane Show by then, and
would be at our best. What a perceptive man he was!
The outcome of Bill Godfrey's enthusiastic 'get up and
go', together his wide ranging membership into scores of
clubs, and Clive Herring's initiative in arranging Brian
Fogarty to view our act, was that by September 6th, Monday
afternoon, following a protracted meeting with Brian at
his office in Milsons Point, North Sydney (which is across
and almost under the famous Sydney harbour bridge), we were
under exclusive management with our first Australian agent.
Not bad, considering we had arrived in the country totally
unknown only 36 days earlier. Without doubt, our coming
to Australia, and choosing to make it our new home was a
wise decision - and it wasn't too far from New Zealand,
around three and a half hours flying time - things were
starting to look up.
Within two weeks - Sat. 18th of Sept, Brian had arranged
our first job through his agency, at the 'Catellezian Club',
which was on Anzac Parade, Kingsford, doing two spots, followed
by the
'Chesterhill' RSL on the Sunday. All artists were required
by most of the clubs to work two spots, except the main
attraction. They would do at least an hour's show on their
own; I did the 20min. Sleight of Hand magic act in the first
half of the concert, and performed our 22min. 'Master of
the Mystique' act for the second, which was the: Fire-eating,
Bed of Nails, Sword-Swallowing and Psychic Surgery ('String
Thing') routine. Sunday the 26th, we were back at the 'Wenty'
for Clive, but booked this time through Brian, consequently
having to give him his 10% of our fee. Couldn't really moan,
if it wasn't for Clive and Brian, we would have still been
struggling to get onto the lucrative club circuit.
Our next booking was a beaut. From Wed.29th to Sun.10th
Oct - two weeks at the 'Marrickville' RSL doing just the
one spot each night - the Fakir act, which made life just
a little bit easier,
and our fee remained the same as for two spots. Not only
that, but on the Thursday (the 30th), Brian had got us onto
the No.1 Daytime Television Variety show in the country
- The MIKE WALSH SHOW which was broadcast from Ch.9 daily
on a Nationwide live hook-up! You really have 'cracked it',
to appear on his show! What a feather in our cap that was!
There were literally hundreds of artists who had been working
the Australian /Sydney circuit for many years, who would
have given their right arm to appear on 'The Mike Walsh
Show'! All that publicity, and as a bonus, you got well
paid into the bargain! No doubt about it, in a very short
space of time we had - 'ARRIVED'!
Almost all of the club shows featured: a Comedian, who
normally doubled as the compere and linked all the acts
together. Two 'Sight'/Speciality acts, Two or Three Singers
- male and female,
and the 'Main Draw', who could be a 'Big Name' Australian
singer or TV Star, or a Top Line overseas act who would
be in Australia for a season; English singers and TV Stars,
and many American artists. Also in the line-up was: 'The
Ballet', a troupe of long legged, attractive dancers. Each
week, they had new, stunning costumes, and rehearsed different
and imaginative dance routines that had been devised by
a choreographer, who quite often was the leader of the troupe.
They would open the show, getting it off to a cracking start,
and also opened the second half after the interval, with
a totally different costumes and dance routine. They sure
worked hard - very few appreciated just how much effort,
sweat or the hours those girls poured into their dancing
rehearsals, but they were sure delighted with the results!
Many of the comedians on the club circuit were English.
They had left for Australia during the early Fifties, when
the country was trying to get more skilled workers and build
up its labour force. They were, and still are, called 'Ten
Pound Poms', because they immigrated to Aussie by ship for
ten lousy pounds and started a new life. In case you didn't
know, 'Pom' or 'Pommie' is slang for an Englishman, or woman,
'Down Under'!
All the clubs had light and sound systems, with operators
for both, and all clubs had a Live Band - Professional Musicians
who could read music. Depending on the size of the club
(somewhere absolutely massive), the line-up/instruments
would include - well, here are three examples from the 'ENCORE
SHOWCAST VARIETY DIRECTORY' - Edition No.18, 1979. 'The
Fairfield RSA', Manager R. W. Vesperman, Agent: Lou Menser,
Bandleader: Ed Bird, Instruments: Piano, Bass, Drums, Sax,
Trumpet, or on Sat. Trombone - Sun. Guitar. 'The Mt. Prichard
Community Club', Manager: M.P. Dubois, Social Sec: Clive
Edwards, Agent: Ross Roland, Bandleader: Norm Faber, Instruments:
Piano, Bass, Drums, Guitar, Tenor/Alto Flute, Trumpet, Trombone.
'The Tweed Heads Bowls Club', Manager: Robert Watts, Agent:
Ron Kitchin Enterprises, Bandleader: Ted Preston, Instruments:
Organ, Piano, Drums, Saxophone, Bass, Guitar, Trumpet. Music-wise
the entertainers, particularly singers, were well catered
for.
