3. Joan Caesar Taking Over As Head Of 4F In 2022
--------------------------------------------
Message by Obie O'Brien (US)

I would like to announce that Joan Caesar, my executive assistant, will be taking my place as head of 4F beginning in 2022. Given my current health situation, I have asked Joan to (effective immediately) coordinate with me and my family, the remaining convention details and actions necessary to ensure a very successful 50th year celebration in April.

Together we have built a legacy that has served the international close-up magic community extremely well. 4F convention structures and frameworks are in place. It is my deepest and sincere desire that this tradition be continued and to work towards upholding the 4F legacy.

--------------------------------------------
4. Message From O'Brien's Family On 4Fs
--------------------------------------------
Message by The O'Brien Family (US)

Obie's love for the close-up magic community has created a very unique environment, bringing together many talented and gifted individuals from around the world to gather annually each April. The pending celebration of the 50th convention year is a tribute to what has been created. The past conventions could only have been successful with the contributions and attendance of some of the best magicians from around the world. The O'Brien family, like Obie, deeply desires that this magic community do everything that it possibly can to provide the continued legacy of 4F.

In closing, the O'Brien family sends a very heartfelt thank you to each and every one of you for helping Obie to live a life with magic that provided much passion and purpose. We thank you in advance for your thoughts and prayers. It might be helpful to know that Obie's spirits are lifted when he hears from you. If you would like to reach out, his emails are being reviewed and shared with him. His email address is rjobie@gisco.net. A letter or card can be sent to: Obie O'Brien, 6993 Muirfield Rd, Hilton Head Island, SC 29928.

7. Tourbillon By P Hill Smith - John Carey #132
-------------------------------------------
Message by John Carey (UK)
http://www.johncareymagic.co.uk/

Effect:

"Give me a number between one and ten." you say.

"Seven." They reply.

"Seven? In a minute you are going to deal through these cards, I just want to show you how:" you start dealing. "One at a time, clean, into a pile: one, two, three, four, five, six, seven. Understand?" You put the deck on top of the dealt pile and slide it to the spectator. "OK now you know, I want you to think of a number between ten and fifty two. Got one? Just to randomize it a little, I want you to take the two digits of that larger number, add them together, and minus that from the original number - you can use the calculator on your phone if you want. What did you end up with?"

"Thirty six."

"OK, keep that number in mind. Now, you said seven earlier right? Imagine we have the four Sevens on the table - the red Sevens just here and the black Sevens just here. Pick up either colour… what did you get?"

"The red Sevens."

"So that's the Seven of Hearts and the Seven of Diamonds. Hand me either one."

"The Seven of Diamonds."

"Wonderful, we'll use that as our prediction. Remember, you randomly picked the seven at the beginning right?" They nod. "And you picked that big number at random and randomised it even more, and those two choices have no connection? Picking the Seven of Diamonds had nothing to do with picking the number thirty six? I want you to deal down to the thirty sixth card."

They deal carefully through the deck exactly as you demonstrated. You slide the thirty sixth card towards you. "The prediction was - the Seven of Diamonds? Remember you could have had Any Card At Any Number®?"

"Yes!"

You flip over the thirty sixth card and it is the Seven of Diamonds.

Method:

The method is simple(ish) and self-working and with a relative minimum of fuss gets you to the ACAAN unpack.

First of all, set up the deck like this (from the top) nine random cards, Ace to Nine of Spades, Ace to Nine of Hearts, Ace to Nine of Clubs, Ace to Nine of Diamonds, rest of the deck.

This stack will automagically ensure that, if you follow the instructions above, whatever number card they pick at the beginning will be at the correct position at the end. TRUST. The initial demonstration deal preps the deck so that the cards with a value that matches their number are now at positions 9, 18, 27 and 36. These just happen to be the numbers you will get using the multiple-of-nine force, so that's exactly what you do. All you need to do is to force the correct *suit*. How do you know the correct suit? It's pretty easy. If the number is 9 the suit is Spades, 18 is Hearts, 27 is Clubs and 36 is Diamonds. There's a way to remember this, but I'll put it at the end.

The suit force is verbal and accomplished using the classic magician's force, hinging on ambiguity. Have them visualise the red and black cards and ask them to take either. If they take the force colour, continue with the cards in their hands. If they don't, have them put those cards in their pocket and continue with the cards on the table. The next step is to have them hand you either of the force colour cards - if they hand you the force suit, that will be the prediction. If they don't, pocket the wrong (imaginary) card, and explain that the tabled card is the prediction.

Maximising the impact of the effect is all about emphasising the freedom of choice at the end and highlighting the independence of the choices. Ganbatte!

Extra:

How to remember the suit you need to force: Each suit has a numerical value based on the pip. A spade has one point, a heart has two curves, a club has three balls and a diamond has four corners. Spade is one, Heart is two, Club is three, Diamond is four. Now, when they have their final number, look at the difference between that number and the next ten, and that number is the suit. For nine, the difference between nine and ten is one, so that number is the Spade. For eighteen, the difference between eighteen and twenty is two, so that number is the Heart. Twenty seven, the difference is three, so Clubs, and for thirty six the difference is…
Easy right?

9. Academy Of Illusions 24hr Web Stream
--------------------------------------------
Message by Jay Scott Berry (Australia)

Wolfgang von Goethe said, "Whatever you can do or dream you can do, begin it; Boldness has genius, power, and magic in it." 18 months ago, when conditions were dramatically shifting, I made a decision to turn crisis into opportunity, and let adversity fuel my determination. That bold beginning set in motion an extraordinary series of events, from last year's Webcasting Wizardry and Art of Wonder Web Series, to this year's Zoom shows, mentoring and lectures. All of this momentum culminated yesterday in the grand opening of the Academy of Illusions.

To celebrate, we set up 11 Live Web Streams, via Zoom, to our FB Page, over a 24 hour period. As the host, I interviewed faculty members, students and an honoured guest. From the first to the last, it was a non-stop masterclass in the greater art of magic, which included very few effects. Instead we focused on acting, theatre, character development, costume, the business of show, advertising, routining, psychology, philosophy and, most important, the commitment to excellence one must make, to become a true artist.

The virtual hit parade began with Scott Cuthbertson, longtime friend, colleague and now, professor. Out of the gates, we set the pace with a 45 minute, upbeat discussion, reminiscing about the past, defining the present and imagining the future. Next up was Academy Co-Founder and Director, Tommillusions. With dynamic flair, he boldly explained our principles and philosophy, likening the Academy to the Shaolin Temple of Magic.

From there, I shifted focus to some of my students and mentees, doing individual interviews with Austin Moody, Eric Stevens, Daz Buckley and Joel Howlett. We discussed, in detail, how each was able to manifest their dream of becoming professional magicians.

Next up was a rare interview with Grand Master, Alan Watson. Joining me from Auckland, New Zealand, we talked about his extraordinary career, accomplishments, accolades and awards. He freely shared priceless information and knowledge, gained from many years of experience.

The last six interviews with Academy professors went from strength to strength. Romany joined me from her country cottage in England, discussing life, career and her bestselling book. Arthur Tivoli, from the South of France, talked about his many wonderful years performing in Cabarets, nightclubs and Disneyland Paris. Without skipping a beat, Eva May and Roger Nicot, from Southwest England, each discussed their unique journey to becoming master magicians.

In show business, it's always good to save the best for last. Yet, in all my planning, I never imagined how timeless the final session would be. Without a single scripted word, Anthony Darkstone, Bob Fitch and I embarked upon a marathon masterclass on the method behind the magic. We've already agreed that this session is required viewing for all students.

As the virtual dust settles, the common thread is that, by creating this virtual Academy, we are doing what has never been done before; because it never could have been done before. We are embracing, and applying, the most advanced technologies to teach, and pass on, the most ancient of arts. And, that technology means that all these recordings are available to watch, for free, on the Academy FB Page now. How cool is that? www.Facebook.com/AcademyofIllusions

So, we are off and running, hitting the ground at full speed. The first Zoomstorming Sessions start on Saturday, and the Darkstone Dossiers Mini-Series begins on Sunday. Further details are always available on the FB Page and website: www.AcademyofIllusions.com

As the faculty braintrust writes our Code of Honour, three founding principles are clear: The Academy Motto of Excelsior: reaching ever higher, the Pledge: "Make a Commitment to Excellence. Keep it", and that, "We stand upon the shoulders of giants, and are all bound, by honour, to see farther."

11. No Stone Unturned - Paul Stone - Article #25
--------------------------------------------
Message by Paul Stone (US)

As I write this, I have just got back from a fun lunch celebrating Fielding West's Birthday. He refused point blank to say how old he was, but he did tell us that he was born in 1949! A Las Vegas fixture for many years, Fielding is still going strong and 'Bob the bird' hasn't yet fallen off his perch!

Also at this very select gathering were Bill Smith, fresh from producing the highly successful Collectors Magic Expo, Stan Allen who is quietly planning and masterminding another great 'Magic Live' which is taking place next May, Charlie & Sherry Frye just back from performing in Montana, Lupe Nielsen thankfully now looking really well and Richard Faverty, photographer supreme.

Come to think of it, between us all there was a huge amount of magical expertise and experience.

A couple of days ago I was chatting with my good friend Bob Kohler and we got onto the subject of which magic dealers we thought were the best 'demmers'.

The first name to come up was Al Cohen from Washington DC. He ran Al's Magic Shop for over 50 years and had a clientele which included Presidents and many celebrities. Al lived to the ripe old age of 94. His warm, easy going and very likeable personality belied an extremely talented magician and a great salesman.

I grew up and was mentored by Ken Brooke at his 'Magic Place' in London. Like Al, Ken was a highly skilled magician which, when combined with the instincts and attributes of a classic pitchman, meant that once you were hooked, he'd never let you go without buying something!

It's tough to top either of these legendary magic dealers, but there is someone who is right up there with them both. His name, Mark Mason. Mark is not only an outstanding performer and demonstrator, but he possesses one other essential talent, he knows exactly how to close a sale.

Just as Ken did, Mark learnt his trade the hard way, pitching all kinds of products on market stalls, and that experience has certainly paid off for him. If you watch Mark 'demming' at a convention, you'll witness nothing short of a masterclass. He grafts for hours on end and his energy seems to know no bounds. And he's one of the nicest guys in the business too!

Mention of Ken Brooke brings me to a special announcement. Ken would have celebrated his 100th Birthday last October and I had planned to release a Limited Edition of one of Ken's signature tricks, with a custom 'KB100' design to mark the occasion.

But, due to a combination of Covid and the difficulty of getting anything produced, unfortunately I wasn't able to do so.

However, I am delighted to tell you that a special custom Ken Brooke 100 'Sidewalk Shuffle', limited to just 100 sets, is now available.

These large cards with a striking 'KB100' back design are perfect for both performers and collectors alike. They are screen printed on durable polypropylene, and handle really well.

Sidewalk Shuffle was one of Ken's favourite effects, and he loved to perform it. It is ideal for Cabaret, Parlour, Tradeshows, and even Close-up, and it's also a great trick for Zoom shows.

You'll find the full details at www.kbmagic100.com

12. The Orchante Saga - Beginnings
-------------------------------------
Written by the late Tommy Orchard (The Amazing Orchante)

Fiji …
Colonel Rabuka declared himself head of an interim military government and introduced a new constitution, under which blocs of seats in a new assembly were allocated to specific ethnic
groups, thereby guaranteeing a Taukei majority. Under this format, the 1992 elections brought to power a coalition dominated by the principal ethnic Fijian party; Rabuka assumed the Premiership. However under domestic and international pressure, the Rabuka government made several modifications to the constitution, and to guarantee equal rights for all. By the time the revised version came into effect in 1998, Fiji's poor economic performance had undermined the Rabuka Government's popularity. The Fijian Labour Party was now able to secure an absolute majority in the Vela and an Indian Prime Minister, Mahendra Chaudhry, took office. The result was anathema to militant Taukei, including businessman George Speight, who had lost lucrative franchises, because of the change in government.

In May 2000, Speight organised a coup, holding Chaudhry and other ministers as hostages while he issued a series of demands. The other main power centres in Fiji at this point - the army and the Great Council of Chiefs - reacted cautiously. The standoff lasted two months. After initially conceding to most of the rebel demands (including the dismissal of Chaudhry), the military led
by Commodore Frank Bainamarama, took control at the beginning of July. A few weeks later, the military moved against Speight and his followers, who were arrested. An interim government under the veteran Taukei politician Ratu Josefa Iioilo was installed with Lisenia Qarase, as Premiere.

Following the elections in August 2001, a coalition government was formed between the conservative Alliance Party and the Fiji United Party, despite the fact that most votes were won by the Labour Party; Laisenia Qare remained as Prime Minister. The islands have since enjoyed reasonable stability after the chaos of the previous two years, although nothing has been done to
address the underlying causes of this chaos. The Indian community now suffers systematic discrimination and is effectively excluded from political power.

So there you have it, a rather lengthier than I intended, but thorough discourse. In case you have forgotten (for which I can't really blame you, I applaud your patience), it was all triggered by the line: 'Bloody officious Indians had other ideas', Remember? When we arrived in Fiji in 1976, the Fijians had very little say in the making of decisions, on any matter, whether it is political or otherwise, because Fiji was being run by the Indians. Frankly, I was amazed by the amount of petty bureaucracy, because it certainly wasn't there on my previous, lengthy visits to Fiji.

Apart from the discrimination factor, which I personally disagree with, I curse the fact, and our rotten luck, that the bureaucratic Indians had not yet been excluded from politics etc. when Veronica and I arrived in Fiji, to work with Eric at the resort. Their unreasonable, officious attitude cost us a lot of money, for which - I'll never forgive them! When Gorge Speight kicked off in 2000, I cheered with delight; if I'd been a mercenary, you wouldn't have seen me for dust; I'd have been there, right beside him, with all 'six guns blazing'!

Continues next week.
