A
TV magician has died from Covid after refusing to have the
vaccine because his wife was 'super apprehensive' about
getting jabbed.
Tony
Junior, who appeared in the Channel 4 reality show Seasiders,
was admitted to hospital at the start of his month after
contracting the virus.
The
entertainer had documented his battle with the disease on
social media, saying no one on his critical care ward had
received the jab.
He
penned on August 15: 'I'm only writing this because anyone
apprehensive about the vaccine, you need to know what could
be your alternative.'
South
Tyneside Council confirmed his death on Monday, paying tribute
to the magician who 'brought smiles to the faces of so many
children and families'.
Mr
Junior wrote on Facebook: 'Everyone who is apprehensive
has their story. I'm not preaching, just letting you know
of my experiences.
'It's
a game of Russian Roulette. You take the vaccine or take
your chances with Covid.
'On
the critical care ward, none of us had the jab. I hadn't
had it because Mrs J was super apprehensive, so was waiting
for her to be ready. She now beats herself up every night
since I came in hospital despite my reassurances.
'On
the Covid ward, many are senior citizens who have had two
jabs and all those who have returned home since my arrival
- had both jabs.'
In
his final post on August 18, the children's entertainer
said he was at a 'critical stage' with a 'very low level
of oxygen' in his blood.
Tributes
have now poured in for the beloved performer, who was described
as a 'very good friend' and 'professional entertainer of
the highest order'.
Mr
Junior started working in the entertainment business in
1985 as a Butlin's Redcoat before featuring in Seasiders
in the 90s.
Known
for his eccentric style and 'Aloha' catchphrase, he went
on to spend more than three decades organising hundreds
of events across the North East.
James
Piatt, secretary of the Newcastle Magic Circle, said: 'Tony
was a professional entertainer of the highest order. He
was a mentor, a wonderful magician, but above all else,
he was our very good friend.
'The
NMC would not be the flourishing club it is today without
Tony's passion and enthusiasm.
'Tony spent many years serving on the council as our secretary
in which time he helped to grow the club and all of its
members.'
He
added: 'Tony was always one of the biggest and brightest
personalities at all of our meetings and played a vital
role in all of our successes.
'From
giving encouragement to our newest members to providing
support to elderly members that were no longer able to attend
meetings.
'From
creating strong bonds with other magic clubs and communities
around the world to reshaping and hosting our annual dinner,
Tony was at the heart of it all.
'Tony
was so loved by all that knew him as is evident by the many,
many tributes that are being sent by magicians and entertainers
from around the world.
'TJ
will be dearly missed by us all and his memory and spirit
will continue to live on through the NMC.'
And
the Mayor of South Tyneside, Councillor Pat Hay, told The
Shields Gazette: 'Tony was very well respected in the entertainment
industry and much loved by South Tyneside audiences.
'As a firm favourite in our annual events programme, he
brought smiles to the faces of so many children and families
over the years.
'We
are certainly going to miss his wonderful performances full
of fun, games, magic and mayhem.'
Mr
Junior is survived by his wife Claire and a fundraiser has
been set up in his memory for Bryson Animal Shelter.

6. Gravity Location By P hill Smith - John Carey #131
-------------------------------------------
Message by John Carey (UK)
http://www.johncareymagic.co.uk/
Effect:
You
go through the deck and take out and table about half of
the cards (pile A), instructing the punter to shuffle the
rest. They are then told to take about half of what they
have in hand, and table the rest (pile B ). They are to
shuffle the cards they have - you demonstrate with pile
B. You then ask them to take out all the Aces, Faces and
Tens from the cards in their hands and table them (pile
C) - hopefully it should be about half. They are to mix
up the remaining cards, then cut one to the front and remember
it. This they do.
They
take their cards, riffle shuffle them into pile C. They
then drop this pile on top of pile B and cut it to their
heart's content. They then take this whole stack and riffle
shuffle it into pile A, then cut the whole stack as many
times as they like.
You
now go through the deck and easily find their card.
Method:
Ridiculous.
There is an idea that two riffle shuffles with cuts between
them and after them will destroy any setup in your deck,
and I wanted to engineer a way round this limitation. Tourbillon
combines a bunch of different things to accomplish this.
You
take out all the one way faced cards and put them on the
table in pile A - that's right, this trick in part relies
on the division between symmetrical and asymmetrically faced
cards - eg the Ace of Diamonds is symmetrical, since it
can't be upside-down. The Ace of Hearts however is asymmetrical,
since it does. Quickly go through the deck upjogging the
one-way faced cards, strip them out and either place them
on top for performance or, if you are removing them live,
drop them on the table.
Now
follow the procedure as outlined above - when you shuffle
pile B you simply note the bottom card and shuffle it to
the top. This card is now your prime key, please remember
it.
You
can now easily find their card by going through the deck,
and walking back through all the breadcrumbs that the effect
procedure creates. Firstly, you need to look for this prime
key - you know that their card is SOMEWHERE above it, but
because of the cuts and shuffles, you have no way of knowing
where. So, you don't know where it is, or what it is, but
you do know what it isn't: their chosen card is NOT asymmetrical,
and it's not a Ten, an Ace or a Court Card. So, once you
have found the prime key, you now go through the spread
to the first symmetrical number card above it: this will
be their chosen card.

8. Academy Of Illusions - Jay Scott Berry
--------------------------------------------
Message by Jay Scott Berry (Australia)
It's
been a whirlwind week of planning and preparations counting
down to our Grand Opening on September 1st. I would like
to extend a big thank you to our ever-growing team of fans
and faculty. Most of the Social Media is set, with Instagram
and TikTok to supplement the Facebook Page and website.
www.AcademyofIllusions.com
The
biggest story of the week is our new Professor Emeritus.
I met this gentleman at the 1982 FISM in Switzerland, where
we were both top prizewinners. Since then, he's gone from
strength to strength, as a performer, creator and mentor.
Now, his name is synonomous with innovation and excellence
in the Art. As most of you know, I built some of my gimmicks
and effects, upon his foundation. For 40 years, I've called
him a friend and colleague. Now, I am honoured to welcome
him into the Academy. From Japan, the one and only, Sanada!
The
real trick is pulling together all the pieces of this magical
puzzle. And I reckon that a virtual academy has just got
to have a virtual magic shop. With that in mind, I'll let
this next cat out of the bag: It just so happens that one
of our Professors has been hard at work, all year, secretly
developing a brand new, state-of-the-art, online magic shop.
And when I say developing, I mean he's spent countless hours
coding a very extensive website, complete with over 100
Digital Downloads by some of the world's finest.
And
the funny thing (pun intended) is that this man is known
for his comedy antics. Who would have thought that a genius
mind would be behind it all? We met some years ago in England,
and, as fate would have it, we reconnected a year ago on
my Webcasting Wizardry Gala. The man I'm speaking of is
none other than Professor Geno DeVille, and the Academy
of Illusions Shop is DeVille Magic! www.DeVilleMagic.net
September's
Calendar is almost finalized. I'm happy to confirm that
the Darkstone Dossiers Mini-Series will Air on the 5th,
12th and 19th at 9pm London Time, 4pm NY, 1pm LA. These
will culminate in our first full Gala Show, at the same
time, on the 26th. All of these, along with the Opening
Celebrations on the 1st, are free of charge and muggle-friendly.
They will stream live from Zoom to our FB Page, where you
will find more details.
www.Facebook.com/AcademyofIllusions
The
Magicians Only events will kick off with the Zoom storming
Sessions on September 4th, 11th, 18th and 25th. These are
hands-on, Intensive Training Classes, that I will be teaching.
The fees to attend are very reasonable, with details available
upon request.
Finally,
I'm happy to confirm that we'll have a weekly column here
on the Ezine, to keep you all up-to-speed on News from the
Academy.

Joshua
Jay New Lecture
This
November, Joshua Jay will be crisscrossing the country in
a two-month book tour for the public to promote the release
of his anticipated book of essays How Magicians Think. His
publisher is sending him to just a dozen cities to do television,
radio, shows, and signings in support of this title. Joshua
has arranged for a special lecture appearance on his night
off in Philadelphia at the Smoke & Mirrors Magic Theater.
This
is a rare chance to see one of magic's busiest and most
exciting performers. Joshua Jay is an internationally recognized
talent. He is a former First Place Winner at the World Magic
Seminar and was the 2020 Society of American Magicians Magician
of the Year. He has won the Creativity Prize at FISM, and
fooled Penn & Teller on Fool Us.
Joshua
has appeared on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon and The
Late Show with James Corden. He has created two of the best-selling
tricks in magic over the last decade: "Balance"
and "Inferno," and he co-owns Vanishing Inc. Magic,
one of the largest and most prolific companies in magic.
Joshua Jay is also known as one of our industry's leading
lecturers. He is an exceptional teacher, and in his lecture
he mixes close-up and parlor, easy and difficult, card and
non-card magic. In his new lecture lineup, you will see
him perform the following:
The
Wager: a brand new, unpublished effect using four coins
and a hundred-dollar bill. Visual, smart, and extremely
deceptive.
Reverse
Logic: The ultimate parlor opener. A spectator shuffled
deck goes back into new deck order, a watch appears back
on your wrist, and you travel back in time.
Any
Card at Any Page Number: One of Josh's signature effects...you've
never seen this classic of magic with an ending quite like
this.
The
Card Dazzler: This is a color-changing deck where the cards
change in the spectator's hands...and then every card in
the pack turns clear.
Cornered
Complete: Make a borrowed bill appear in a spectator's wallet.
You read that right. A spectator's wallet.
Plus,
many more routines from Josh's original repertoire and product
line.
Peace,
Danny

11. No Stone Unturned - Paul Stone - Article #24
--------------------------------------------
Message by Paul Stone (US)
Last
week I talked about the many outstanding and memorable performers
whom I was fortunate to have seen or worked with, and who
are no longer with us.
There
was one glaring omission, I mentioned Marvyn Roy, Mr Electric,
but I completely forgot his off stage and on stage partner
and soulmate, Carol. She was a major part of both their
lightbulb and jewellery acts. Her charisma and effervescence
shone through every performance.
Mention
of Carol got me to thinking about other ladies in magic
who have played such a crucial part in the success of the
shows they were featured in.
Pam
Thompson wasn't simply an assistant, she was a brilliantly
talented actress, Helga Moretti was larger than life and
had a terrific presence which complemented Hans so perfectly.
Another
lady, and possibly one of the least lauded, but undoubtedly
one of the most influential, is Lynette Chappell. Lynette
enjoyed a career that was unrivalled in the world of magic.
She
was of course the 'Evil Queen' in Siegfried & Roy's
spectacular show at the Mirage which played to full houses
for 13 years.
Lynette's
career is an incredible one, she was the featured co-star
with Siegfried & Roy for over 40 years in their shows
at the Stardust, the Frontier and the Mirage, as well as
the year long sold out tour of Japan and at Radio City Music
Hall in New York.
Lynette
preferred to stay mainly out of the limelight, but she was
as influential and important in Siegfried and Roy's careers
off stage as she was on it. She was, and remains to this
day, a very classy and elegant lady.
I
didn't want to end this article without giving a big shout
out to Bill Smith. Bill masterminded the Magic Collectors
Expo at the Orleans Casino here in Las Vegas last week.
It didn't disappoint!
There
were many highlights, probably the most memorable was the
tour of David Copperfield's International Museum & Library
of the Conjuring Arts. I'm not sure how Bill managed to
persuade David to give everyone who registered at the convention
this unique opportunity to gain a glimpse of his amazing
museum.
I
say it was a glimpse because even if you spent a whole week
in the museum you would still probably only scratch the
surface. It is a truly breathtaking and mind-blowing experience.
I'm
sure that there will be many other more in-depth reports
of this event but, suffice it to say, that thanks to David
Copperfield's generosity, over 200 magicians were given
the treat of a lifetime.
And
to make it even more special, David was there in person
to greet everyone and perform a few of the tricks that first
piqued his interest in magic. It was fabulous.
Back
to the Collectors Expo, all the sessions were excellent.
My favourite was the Blackstone Show, featuring a panel
of three of the original of Blackstone Jnr's assistants,
Gay of course, Bill Smith and Allen Bracken, introduced
and humorously kept in order by Stan Allen.
The
Expo ended with a Dinner and Stage Show, hosted by Mr Vegas
himself, Mac King, now settled and ensconced at the Excalibur
Hotel & Casino. It somehow just doesn't do Mac justice
to say he performed his act 'as known'. Mac does what Mac
does, and he does it better than anyone else, with great
skill and a warmth that very few others possess.
The
show cast comprised Les Arnold, who talked his way through
the Nest of Boxes without performing it!, Quick Change specialists
from Switzerland Retonio & Natalie, her energy and athleticism
was particularly impressive, and Luxembourg's Star magician,
David Goldrake who closed the show in commanding style.
And
even the Dinner was unexpectedly good too!
Well
done again to Bill who worked tirelessly to make this the
success it was. Next year's Magic Collectors Expo is in
Austin, Texas, from April 13th-15th 2022. I'd highly recommend
that you reserve your spot now! (www.magiccollectorexpo.com)

12. The Orchante Saga - Beginnings
-------------------------------------
Written by the late Tommy Orchard (The Amazing Orchante)
Fiji
A
Brief History and Government
Those
of you who have been following my chronicle from the beginning,
will be aware that I spent some considerable time in Fiji
during the early Sixties, initially with my late friend
Alan
Horobin and later, with my own promotions, touring every
bit of Fiji; picture theatres, tin sheds in tiny villages,
etc. anywhere I could work my show, together with my then,
Eurasian/Fijian
girlfriend.
Veronica
and I last visited Fiji's shores on the 15th July 1976,
when Eric Petford had asked us to join him at the 'Paradise
Point Resort', Korolevu (situated on the Coral Coast, about
an hour and
a half drive from Nadi, and twenty minutes from Sigatoka)
where he had recently been transferred from a hotel/resort
in the South Island of New Zealand, as manager of this fabulous,
idyllic retreat; it was to have been our permanent base.
Eric was going to pool together all the other hotels on
Fiji, and those that were on the different smaller islands
and atolls of the Fijian group, many of which were/are privately
owned - catering for the very, very rich!
The
plan was that we would have regular, non-stop employment
for years to come. Unfortunately, 'A Bloody Officious Group'
had other ideas! I will give you the full story, regarding
'That Line' later, but first, here is a little? 'History
of Fiji and Government - as it has some bearing on 'That
Line', and will give you a better understanding as to why
I used it.
Fiji's
discovery is usually credited to Abel Jansen Tasman, a Dutch
navigator who visited the island group in 1643. Captain
James Cook of England sailed through the islands in 1774,
but
major credit for the discovery and charting of the island's
goes to another Englishman, William Bligh, who navigated
the islands after being set adrift in a small boat by the
mutinous crew of his ship, the ill-fated 'Bounty'.
The
first inhabitants of Fiji came from Melanesia some 3500
years ago, and established a hierarchical society based
on clans. Little is known of the island's history before
the arrival of
Europeans - an assortment of roving traders, missionaries
and shipwrecked sailors - in the mid-17th century. Relations
between the indigenous community and the new arrivals were
reasonably
good, founded on mutually beneficial commercial activity,
until the establishment of plantations in the 1860s, which
destabilised the economy. Serious friction between the Fijian
chiefs and the
Europeans ensued - the main cause centring on land ownership.
On a broader front, imperial rivalry between the major European
powers was reaching a climax in the Pacific. Thus, in 1874,
Fiji became a British colony. Large numbers of workers from
India were imported to develop a plantation economy, accounting
for the islands present ethnic mix and consequently the
tension between the two main communities, which has blighted
Fijian politics since the country's independence in 1970.
For
the next 17 years after independence, the moderate conservative
Alliance Party governed without interruption. Foreign policy
was (and it still is) broadly pro-Western and geared towards
the development of regional alliances, such as the South
Pacific Forum. As a member of the forum, Fiji, along with
its smaller neighbours, vigorously campaigned against French
nuclear testing. It is also a member of the Commonwealth,
from which it was suspended temporarily in 1987 and again
in 2000.
The
1987 suspension followed the general election that same
year, which removed the Alliance Party from office. The
poll brought to power a coalition between the main ethnic
Indian party, the National Federation Party, led by Marendra
Chaudhry and the newly-formed Labour Party, which drew support
from the growing multi-racial trade union movement. The
new government had a majority of Indian ministers, which
proved too much for the many nationalist native Fijians
(referred to as Taukei). This was the trigger for an army
coup d' etat, headed by Colonel Sitiveni Rabuka, with the
declared intention of ensuing the preservation of Taukei
rights!
Continues
