2. Vanish Magic Magazine August 2021
--------------------------------------------
Message by Paul Romhany - Editor Vanish Magazine

I've changed this up a little this month and made it trick heavy. If you want to learn some great routines from cards to stand-up to comedy to kids magic then you'll love the August edition of Vanish.

Again, we offer a double cover. We are the first magic magazine to do this and proud to offer more artists with their unique and inspiring stories.

Our feature artist includes Luis Carreon with a wonderful article on him by Paige Thompson. Luis also shares his five secrets of making card magic more entertaining.

We also have Grace Chang as another cover story. Grace Chang is an extremely talented Asian-American performance artist. She is an award winning, successful magician, puppeteer, author, screenwriter, actor, director and producer of film and live performances. She executes and juggles all these careers with precision and an ability to make it look easy.

Have you wondered what it's like to be working on a cruise ship these days? Thomas Swieciak interviews David Gatti and discusses life back on a cruise ship after the Pandemic.

Nick Lewin continues his long running writing career with Vanish as he pays a wonderful tribute to Pam Thompson who passed away recently. He also shares a wonderful story on pioneer comedy mentalist Terry Nosek -aka Dr. Sigmund Fraud.

Steve Spill continues his series on How To Be Creative with stories from his career and how he was able to come up with some of the most creative magic out there.

We have taken a different approach this month to the reviews. We have focussed on three of the most outstanding products that have come across our desk and highlight them in a more indepth review section. At Vanish we often get items no other reviewer has access to and are proud to give them the space they deserve. We know you'll love all of these!

Felicity Fields continues her series on A Squib In The World as she writes the article on her way to the UK.

This and so much more ...

6. When Maven Met Leech - John Carey #128
-------------------------------------------
Message by John Carey (UK)
http://www.johncareymagic.co.uk/

When Maven Met Leech is my exploration of Max Maven's famous one hand in my pocket card effect that utilizes a beautiful self working mental force of the late Al Leech. It uses a regular deck, no sticky stuff and apart from the all-important presentation is self-working.

Ahead of time place the Ten of Clubs and the Two of Diamonds on top of the deck in that order. Remove the Ten of Diamonds and Two of Clubs from the deck and place them back outwards inside your right side pocket, the Ten spot furthermost from your body. Your preparation is complete and it's time to unleash a little miracle on civilians!

Bring out your deck and casually spread it face up in the hands. Then turn the deck face down and execute an in the hands riffle shuffle retaining your two card set up on top. "Today I thought it would be nice to try an experiment under the fairest conditions. So to make any kind of
manipulation impossible I will place one hand in my pocket and keep it there the whole time."

Hand the deck to a spectator and place your right hand into the side pocket. We will now use the Leech mental force. Extend your left hand palm up and ask your helper to deal cards face down one at a time. After they have dealt a few ask them to shuffle the deck and deal some more
and then request they shuffle again and deal a few more and then stop. Our two target cards are secretly on the bottom of the packet we hold. "In a moment I want you to create a playing card purely in your mind" As you say this the left hand starts dealing two packets from left to right onto the table. Watch where the last card is dealt as this is the Ten spot. "A card

consists of a value and a suit. Which of these two top cards do you wish to be the value card?" Point to the top card of each packet as you say this. Let's say they point to the Ten spot. Have them take a peek and remember just the value. Next have them take a peek at the top card of the other packet and remember just the suit. It will be a diamond of course. "Please combine the value with the suit to form or make a playing card in your mind." Give a couple of examples here so that your helper is clear in what they need to do, but be casual as you speak. Have the spectator gather up the two packets from the table and then add them to the deck and then shuffle and hold the deck between their palms.

From a method point of view our work is done. They are thinking of the Ten of Diamonds and to all intents and purposes you've done nothing. "So let's see, you shuffled the deck a few times and formed a card purely in your mind. A card that nobody in this room, town or indeed country could know. I will attempt to make your thought history, wrapped in a mystery!" Wave your left hand slowly over their hands and then smile and pause. Ask your spectator to call out their thought of card and instruct them to remove it from the deck. Of course they won't find it...

"That's weird right?! And remember, I've had one hand in my pocket the whole time." The left hand comes out of the pocket with the Ten of Diamonds and turns it face up to finish the mystery. Backing up, if they touch the two spot first during the Leech force, the card they will form or make will be the Two of Clubs. Remove that card at the conclusion instead...

9. No Stone Unturned - Paul Stone - Article #22
--------------------------------------------
Message by Paul Stone (US)

I arrived back in Las Vegas from UK a couple of days ago and on my way back en route to the airport I was able to spend a couple of hours walking around some old haunts in the West End of London.

These included Wardour Street, which is located just off Shaftesbury Avenue, known as the heart of theatreland. Wardour Street occupies a special place in my heart because I spent literally hundreds of hours there. Or to be more precise on the first floor of 145 Wardour Street.

This was the location of Ken Brooke's Magic Place, which in the late 1960's and 1970's was THE place for magic in London. Every famous magician from around the world found their way to Ken's studio. Just some of the world class performers who regularly frequented this mecca of magic were Fred Kaps, Siegfried Fischbacher, Paul Daniels, Finn Jon, Gaetan Bloom, Tommy Cooper, and Silvan.

I was fortunate enough to be mentored by Ken Brooke from the age of 13. He was without doubt one of the greatest teachers and demonstrators of magic ever. Another name whom readers of Magic New Zealand will know only too well, and who was a protégé of Ken Brooke, was Nick Lewin who built himself a very successful career here in USA.

Standing outside 145 Wardour Street in the pouring rain certainly brought back many wonderful memories. One of the most vivid was, as a young man, being sent by Ken to Berwick Street market to buy lemons for him to demonstrate the Chop Cup.

Ken's studio is only a five minute walk from the London Palladium Theatre in Argyll Street, a venue where I have produced a number of Variety and Magic shows and I always try to make a point of walking past the front of this iconic theatre when I'm visiting the West End.

Back in Las Vegas an exciting event that is taking place in a couple of weeks is Bill Smith's Magic Collector Expo 2021. Bill has several excellent presenters lined up, and all the delegates are in for a special treat as Bill has set up a tour of David Copperfield's International Museum and Library of the Conjuring Arts, which is celebrating its 30th year. Quite a coup!

I'm personally looking forward to hearing Les Arnold's presentation about his grandfather 'The Great Leon', a Vaudeville Headliner. And speaking of Les Arnold, he will also be performing his hilarious 'Les Arnold & Dazzle' comedy magic act which is a favourite of mine. The Magic Collector Expo promises to be a memorable few days.

10. The Orchante Saga - Beginnings
-------------------------------------
Written by the late Tommy Orchard (The Amazing Orchante)

The 'Joys' Of Living Out of a Suitcase

Destiny could have easily dished out, I'm sure, a far worse fate than having to spend a hell of a lot of my life in and out of hotels, motels, travel lodges and, dreaded bed & breakfast joints. Several B&B's were so goddamn awful; most governments wouldn't dare place refugees in them. Weeell okay, I exaggerate -but just a teensy bit! We quickly learnt to avoid them like the plague!

Actually, the hotels provided a very good living and we had a lot of fun in the process, as well as enjoying the magnificent scenery of our beautiful country. I can proudly say that I have travelled the length and breadth of New Zealand, several times; I don't think there is a city, town, village, or 'One Horse Stop' that I haven't either worked in or at least passed through sometime during my/our travels. What has astonished me is the number of 'kiwis' I have met - all over the world, who confessed that they had hardly been out of their own town before venturing forth overseas. I think it's rather shameful to admit that you haven't explored your own country before heading off to distant, foreign shores!

Anyway, here's the start of a string of hotels that we used to work, on a regular basis in New Zealand; they are in no particular order, some of them may not even exist now, although I'm
sure that if you live in a particular city/town, you will recognise the name of a specific hotel. For instance, one of my favourites was the 'Mayfair Hotel' in Hastings; I practically lived there for a time, performing in the Carousel Bar for a week, sometimes three - several times a year. I discovered only recently that sadly, it is no more. Another that has closed its doors was the massive 'Thunderbird Valley Inn' - that was in Glenfield, on the north shore of Auckland city. Then there's the 'Hibernian Hotel' in Timaru, The 'Frankton Motor Hotel', in Queenstown; would play there at least a month at a time (like the 'Mayfair', it also was almost my second 'home'), 'O'Connell's', also in Queenstown, The 'Tainui Hotel', in Whakatane, The 'Greeton Hotel', in Tauranga and the 'Maheno Tavern', in Oamaru.

The 'White House Hotel', in Invercargill - I remember this one in particular because I always had an afternoon 'Close- Up' magic session in the huge public bar. Imagine doing close-up magic with at least a hundred guys clamouring around to watch the 'Fun'! What sticks in my memory about this place, is the time that somebody bawled out something about some magician they had seen somewhere, sticking a card on a ceiling, then followed that proclamation with: "If you're so bloody clever, let's see ya do that one mate!" Now I have a very strong principle when it comes
to doing 'card tricks', I utterly refuse to carry, or use a pack (a 'deck', for any Americans reading this) of cards my own. I will only use whatever pack of cards that may be available at the time, regardless of their condition.

You would not believe the state of many of the packs (or decks) that have been handed to me from behind various bars, from all over the world. They would have most magicians screaming for a bucket of disinfectant, gum remover and rubber gloves! With these, I perform 'sleight of hand magic'. In the foreword of my saga, I spoke about having , 'Fingers of Steel', developed from using cards just as I've described, in pubs and hotels all over New Zealand since the Sixties. You should try doing double and triple lifts, forces and other 'fancy moves' etc. with a pack of cards that are stuck together with God only knows what, which are just short from becoming a 'solid block of wood'; it ain't easy!

So, with the 'Card on the Ceiling' challenge thrown at me, I suggested that someone ask at the bar for a pack of cards, and I'd would see what I could do. Meanwhile, I excused myself to the
toilet, raced out to the office and got some Sellotape. The challenge was met and a signed card finished up stuck to the ceiling, a good fifteen or twenty feet high. A few months later, I was performing for three days at the 'Invercargill Winter Show', following which I had organised some dates back at the White House Hotel. On entering the bar I saw the card - still stuck to
the ceiling. Not only that, the owners, Ivan and Margaret West had nailed a frame around it! I wonder if it is still there? I doubt it but, who knows!

The list continues: The 'Golden Fleece', Waikouaiti: The 'Golden Central Hotel', Alexandria: The 'Empire Hotel', Temuka: The 'City Hotel', Timaru: The 'Haast Motor Hotel', Haast. That's where I met two helicopter pilots, who took me 'Daredevil Flying'.

Continues next week ….
