5. Magical Women With Connie Boyd
--------------------------------------------
Message by Connie Boyd (USA)
Helen
Coghlan is an Australian magician and escapologist who holds
the record and honor as the first magician to Fool Penn
& Teller THREE times!
Her
first appearance on the show was in Season 5 in 2018, subsequently
she has appeared on Season 6 - 2019 and Season 7 - 2020
winning a "Fool Us" award and trophy each time
for two different escapes.
Helen
has also performed at Hollywood's prestigious Magic Castle,
Rio Casino Las Vegas and Sydney Opera House. Helen began
performing on stage as an assistant in her father's (Arthur
Coghlan) Magic and Illusion show at the age of 15 and quickly
became a top entertainer in her own right. She's also followed
in her father's footsteps to become one of Australia's leading
escapologists. Helen credits her partnership with her father
as the key to her Penn & Teller successes. In addition
to being a successful magician, illusionist and escapologist,
Arthur Coghlan is a magic inventor.
In
1994 Helen received a lot of media attention when she became
the first woman in the world to be broadcast nationwide,
on television escaping from a Pagoda Water Torture Cell
in 1:50 minutes. The Water Torture Escape became infamous
when it was performed by the legendary Harry Houdini.

6. Three Flight - John Carey #127
-------------------------------------------
Message by John Carey (UK)
http://www.johncareymagic.co.uk/
Three
Flight is essentially a repeat thought of card to pocket
with a finish that is a real surprise. Kudos to Lance Pierce
who inspired me some years ago with his effect Little Carlyle,
published on the Magic Pebble forums.
Ahead
of time secretly place any card back outwards in your right
side pocket. Hand out the deck for shuffling and ask your
helper to deal five cards into a face down packet and set
aside the balance of the deck. Instruct them to pick up
the packet and spread it with the faces towards
themselves and just think of a card they see. Then ask them
to cut their thought of card to the face in order to fully
focus on it and then turn the packet face down.
"I
have a friend who's a Gypsy fortune teller and she always
mixes the cards in a most mysterious way." We will
now walk and talk our helper through the under/down mix;
having them place the top card under the packet and then
deal the next card to the table. This is continued until
they have one card left, which you ask them to drop on top.
Their thought of card is now second from the top but the
conviction of fairness is strong. "So you're just thinking
of a card.
Watch
closely now as five cards becomes just four!" As you
say this, casually pick off the top card with the right
hand and use it to scoop up the packet. Then make the moment
and Elmsley Count, the last card - their card - going on
top and ever so slightly upjogged. Top palm this card as
you square up and gently toss the packet into your left
hand. The right hand goes to the pocket and brings out the
palmed card face down at the fingertips. Ask your helper
to name their thought-of card and then reveal the card in
hand to be theirs to conclude the first phase.
"Isn't it amazing how a card you merely thought of
can teleport from here to my pocket?" As you deliver
this line you will execute the Francis Carlisle pocket switch
from his classic Homing Card in the Stars of Magic book.
The right hand dips into the pocket and switches the selection
for the indifferent card and then comes back out. Be calm
and casual as you execute this. The patter does the job
for you. Place the indifferent card into the packet in the
left hand and square up. Then snap your fingers over the
packet and execute another Elmsley Count, displaying four
cards. As you place the last card on top secure a left pinky
break beneath it. With a clearly empty right hand remove
the card from the pocket and display the selection once
more, ending the second phase.
For
the final phase we will make a detour and create a nice
surprise to round the effect off. Place the selection face
up on top of the packet. "They do say that the third
time's a charm." Pick off both cards from below the
break at the inner short edge and place this back to back
double card into your right pocket for just a beat. Push
off the lower face down card and come straight back out
with the face up selection. The audience will take this
as a slightly amusing gag. Place the selection on the bottom
of the packet and make a waving action over the cards with
the right hand. Then Elmsley Count one last time, this time
the last card going underneath the packet. "And here
it is!"
The
right hand removes the card from the pocket and tosses it
face down onto the table. Get your helper to turn it over.
This gives you ample misdirection to push the top card of
the packet (selection) forward with the right fingertips.
Clip the rest of the cards in the fork of your thumb and
come away with them and drop this hand to your side. The
audience will see an indifferent card on the table... "Ah
something crazy is happening!" The right hand dives
into the pocket and drops the packet inside and comes out
with just one random card and drops it onto the table. Look
perplexed and then repeat the above with two further cards.
To conclude the effect look at the card in your left and
dramatically turn it face up to reveal their thought-of
card.
Notes:
Pacing
is important with multi-phase effects. Don't rush the phases
and pause at the important moments to amplify the magic.
Credit to Socrates for the packet steak which David Williamson
makes great use of in his routine 51 to Pocket.

8. No Stone Unturned - Paul Stone - Article #22
--------------------------------------------
Message by Paul Stone (US)
I've
been back in the UK for the past three weeks on business
and it's interesting to see the difference between the rules
for the pandemic from those in Las Vegas.
I
had to take a Covid test before flying across the Atlantic
and three more tests during the first ten days in UK. It's
not an inexpensive process either.
I
had to self-isolate for ten days which meant that for half
my visit I wasn't able to go anywhere. Apparently the rules
are changing in the next few days and the Government are
doing away with the need to self-isolate visitors from USA!
Perfect timing!
When
I was finally allowed to go out, I rented a car and drove
up the coast from Liverpool to Blackpool, the home of the
world's largest magic convention. I met up with two good
friends, both coincidentally named Russ, and both of whom
are the driving force behind the Blackpool convention.
I'm
referring of course to Russ Stevens and Russ Brown. Russ
Stevens, after a very successful career as an illusionist
which took him around the world, is also the man in charge
of co-ordinating and producing all the magic acts on 'Britain's
Got Talent'.
Russ
Brown, who is also a busy performer, is undertaking an exciting
new venture, actually in Blackpool.
He
is opening a close-up and parlour magic venue in a prime
location just a few doors away from the entrance to the
Winter Gardens complex where all the major shows take place,
and also indeed the Blackpool convention itself.
It
is a brave decision, particularly in these uncertain times,
but the location is excellent and Russ is a knowledgeable
and personable guy. The venue will hold around forty people
and will also have a bar. It is due to open in September.
I think it will do well.
Both
Russ's have confirmed that all being well the Blackpool
Convention will be taking place next February, and with
their always incredible range of lecturers, and shows in
the superb 3,000 seater Opera House Theatre, not to mention
the 150 dealers from literally all around the world, it
will undoubtedly be another successful convention for the
Blackpool Magicians Club.
And
if you are planning to be there, be sure to check out Russ's
new venue, which is to be called the 'House of Secrets'
in memory of a very special friend and mentor to dozens
of magicians, Bill Thompson. Bill's magic studio, the 'House
of Secrets' was open to magicians for several years just
a two minute walk from the Winter Gardens. It is a fitting
tribute to Bill and it is wonderful that the name lives
on.

9. The Orchante Saga - Beginnings
-------------------------------------
Written by the late Tommy Orchard (The Amazing Orchante)
A
Nostalgic Walk Down Memory Lane
The
heading on page 150 should have stated: 'We Prepare To Leave
New Zealand.' , as it was actually seven months later (after
Eric asked us to join him), before we left for Fiji, although
it didn't seem like it as the time just flew by, because
of the amount of work that kept us travelling to various
hotels all over New Zealand, constantly voyaging back and
forth between the North and South Islands, relishing the
ever changing scenery of our beautiful country!
The
New Zealand segment of my Saga is drawing to a close, not
that I won't be revisiting from time to time, as I keep
remembering stories and things that I have been meaning
to write about, and didn't get around to. I have decided,
as the above title suggests, to go on a 'Reminiscent, Nostalgic
Memory Trip', which will do great things for my heart and
soul and will perhaps, be of interest to you.
Browsing
through my 1976 Diary, I find that the 'Last Ever' shows
we performed in New Zealand was at the 'Tudor Towers' in
Rotorua, from Monday 5th to Sat 10th of July 1976, and that
we left just four days later, Wed.14th - for Fiji.
Here
is a little of the history of Rotorua, and the Tudor Towers.
Rotorua is situated about 50 miles west, inland from Whakatane,
which is on the east coast of the Bay of Plenty of the
north Island. Whakatane is where Veronica was brought up
and, where we lived prior to departing for Fiji. Rotorua
is affectionately known by the nickname of 'Rotten-rua',
because of
the rather whiffy, to put it mildly, 'rotten eggs' smell
that pervades your nostrils in and around the city. This
is due to the sulphurous geothermal activity of the region;
you get used to it, and it doesn't seem to bother the hordes
of tourists.
This
unique thermal phenomenon can most easily be observed in
the Maori village of 'Whakarewarewa' (pronounced/sounds
like - 'FAR CAR REWA REWA'), which is about a mile and a
half south of Rotorua; it has numerous springs and three
impressive geysers within a small area. In the Maori language,
WH is pronounced as 'F' and A, is pronounced as 'FAR'! Whakatane,
for instance, is pronounced/sounds like: FAR CAR TAR KNEE.
It is rather shameful just how many New Zealanders mispronounce
Maori place names; it really is an insult!
The
majority of the town's biggest hotels, and a large number
of motels are located on, or just off Fenton Street, running
north - south across the city. East of the northern end
of Fenton Street
is the magnificent Government Gardens (it lies directly
on the shores of Lake Rotorua), which include a park and
sports grounds. The most eye catching feature in Government
Gardens is the -
'Tudor Towers'. Built in 1908, the old half - timbered bathhouse
of Rotorua, was styled after the bathhouse of 'Bad Nauheim'
in Germany. Half - timbered construction was cheaper than
a stone
building, which is more liable to damage in an earthquake,
and there are plenty of those in the whole region.
A
new spa establishment opened in the 1960s, called the 'Polynesian
Pools', which are situated behind and to the right of the
Tudor Towers. Its particular attraction is the 'Three Pools',
which are supplied with water from three different springs,
each with its own special thermal content and varying temperatures.
Although the sulphurous waters of the pools are still regarded
as useful in the treatment of arthritis and rheumatism,
most visitors and locals enjoy them as a pleasant form of
relaxation - guaranteed to soothe frayed nerves, relax the
body and ensure a
good night's sleep! Also a great place to take a 'Bird',
to get her into a nice, relaxed and amorous mood, as many
a kiwi bloke, or woman for that matter, will tell you!
The
former bathhouse (The Tudor Towers) now contains the 'Natural
History Museum of Rotorua', and the City Art Gallery, including
Maori Art. Upstairs is a large function room, which is where
I used to entertain quite regularly. It gives me quite a
strong sense of pride to think that we used to perform our
show(s) amongst all that history; gives me a nice sort of
a warm glow,
now, thinking about it.
Next,
I'm going to list a string of hotels (that may 'ring a bell'
for many 'Kiwi's), that we worked prior to leaving our home,
New Zealand, for many - far, far too many, years. As I said
at the
beginning, this is a 'Nostalgic Memory Kick' for me, before
I start on the Fiji / Australia segment of my saga.
Continues
next week
.
