2. December Issue Of Genii Magazine
--------------------------------------------
Message by Richard Kaufman - Editor Genii Magazine
If
you subscribe to Genii for as low as $35 (www.geniimagazine.com),
this is what you'll get this month!
On
our cover this month is the inestimable John Carney, the
winner of more awards from The Academy of Magical Arts than
any other magician. He is well deserving of the accolades.
We have been friends for over 40 years, and he was good
from the get-go and is even better now. He makes everything
looks so easy and natural - it drives me crazy. He has a
new book coming out which, if it sells like his others,
will be out of print within a year. Order it the day it
goes on sale to ensure you receive a copy. Chloe Olewitz
digs deep into the mind of Carney.
Our
columnists this month include Libby Ward, who reports on
the dining program at The Magic Castle (good thing they
have warm weather year round); "Cardopolis" (and
David Britland has started a free newsletter to which you
should subscribe at https://cardopolis.substack.com), "Conjuring,"
"Chamber of Secrets," "Artifices," "Magicana,"
"Expert at the Kid's Table," "Exhumations,"
"The Eye," and reviews by David Regal, Francis
Menotti, and Ryan Matney.
You
will also get online access to every Genii issue all the
way back to 1936 and every issue of MAGIC magazine.

5. Bluff Cards Across - John Carey #102
-------------------------------------------
Message by John Carey (UK)
http://www.johncareymagic.co.uk/
Yes
you read that right. A bluff cards across effect. Nothing
actually travels across but by playing with your spectators
perceptions this is the effect you will create in their
minds. There is a set up, but fear not, it's not crazy!
From the top of the deck down have six X cards followed
by an Ace, then three X cards, Ace, ditto, ditto.
Execute
any convincing false shuffle and cut sequence as you begin,
retaining your set up. "Let's see what Lady Luck has
given us." We will now casually display a few groups
of indifferent cards and set the Aces up covertly right
under their noses. Push off three cards and take them in
a spread into the palm-up right hand. Turn this hand displaying
three indifferent cards and comment on them. Flip the packet
face up letting it land on your left thumb and then take
the packet from above with your right hand and table it.
Push
off three more cards, secretly obtaining a left pinky break
beneath the next card. Comment on the values as you flash
the faces of the three cards and then flip them face-up
on top of the deck. Immediately pick up the four cards below
your break from above with the right hand and table this
packet on top of the tabled packet. Repeat the exact above
last sequence three more times, forming one large packet,
the Aces secretly scattered throughout and reversed. Turn
this packet face-down and ask a spectator to cover it with
either hand. Flip the remainder of the deck face-up and
start spreading it briskly in clumps. "So we're left
here with a wide array of cards. Two's, Tens, Aces, Fours,
sixes etc. Jacks are good, Kings are great, but in Blackjack
you simply can't beat the?" Let them reply by saying
the Aces. This is of course smoke and mirrors, but if you're
attitude is relaxed and you act nonchalantly, the deception
is solid. Hand this packet to another spectator to hold.
"They
say in generations to come we will be able to teleport from
A to B, but it's actually possible to do this now with cards,
like the ones you named, the?" Once they confirm Aces
you mime extracting cards one at a time from the second
persons packet and invisibly tossing them over to the first
spectators packet.
"They've
gone but I guess you want proof? Have spectator two spread
through his packet and confirm the Aces are gone. Let this
moment sink in and then ask your first spectator to lift
their hand. Take their packet and ribbon spread it revealing
the Aces scattered face-up!

6. Christmas Magic In The Air!
-------------------------------------------
Message by Marvin Berglas MIMC (UK)
Learning
Magic is more popular than ever according to Marvin Berglas
- creator of the world's biggest and best known magic brand
- Marvin's Magic - who this week celebrates 33 years of
their professional magic made easy. Marvin highlights the
incredible upsurge of interest in magic this year.
It's
a combination of factors including more and more families
wanting to be entertained and learning new skills in these
difficult times. Our award winning magic combines traditional
family values with cutting edge technologies to give innovation
and a contemporary feel to this cherished art form.
Parents
love seeing their children enjoying learning and growing
in confidence through interacting and performance rather
than merely being attached to their screens.
This
was highlighted by Retail and On Line giants, Argos who
chose magic as the theme for their highly acclaimed Christmas
TV ad campaign. Says Marvin "We were thrilled that
our Marvin's Amazing Box of Tricks was chosen to be the
main featured item in this prestigious advert, highlighting
the fun young Daisy and Lucy had entertaining their family
with a magic show. The sound track is Gary Barlow's catchy
new single "Incredible" and again we were prominently
featured in their social media campaign".

It
is with great sadness I have to inform you all that the
wonderful Matt Field MIMC passed away last night. Matt was
a superb man, a fantastic member of our Society and, above
all, a wonderful friend. I will miss him and I know many
of you will too.

8. Broken Wand - Joe Kardwell
--------------------------------------------
Message by George Schindler (US)
Joe
Kardwell passed away suddenly on November 7, 2020, at his
home. His beloved wife of 46 years, Nancy Kardwell, was
with him during his final moments. Joe was 84 years old.
He was a 67-year member of the Society of American Magicians
Born
and raised in Manhattan, Joe was a professional magician
from his late teens through his early 30s, performing on
Caribbean cruise ships, in major New York City hotels and
in other venues in the U.S., Canada and Bermuda. Joe appeared
on many TV programs, including "The Ed Sullivan Show,"
"The Paul Winchell Show" and "Sesame Street"
during its earliest days. Later, he was the creator and
publisher of the original Magic Magazine.
Joe
Kardwell had a successful bird act in the 1950's. With Joe
in his white tie and tails and his assistant in a light
dress, two silks in her hand became a bird. Two rosettes
on her dress were pulled apart to produce several silks
and another bird. Lighted candles and canes and a newspaper
produced more birds. And so it went until their flashy finish.
After his time in magic Joe pursued an over-50-year career
as an entrepreneur.
He
was founder and president of Magic for Madison Avenue, which
provided products and performers for magic-themed sales
promotions .and special-event magic productions. Joe established
JKI Inc., a rare stamp investment company. Together with
his wife, Nancy, he built and eventually sold Kardwell Associates
Inc., an advertising agency focused on the pharmaceutical
and tourism industries, and Kardwell International Inc.,
a distribution business offering promotional and entertainment
card and gambling products.
Joe
is survived by his wife, Nancy; seven children and their
spouses: 6 grandchildren; and 10 great grandchildren.

9. The Orchante Saga - Beginnings
-------------------------------------
Written by the late Tommy Orchard (The Amazing Orchante)
Another
'Blast From The Past'
During
the late Sixties, a Maori singer known as - 'Prince' Tui
Teka, appeared on the scene, and became a sort of National
'Superstar Icon' in New Zealand. Many people thought that
he was a 'Real Maori Prince' but in reality, it was just
a fanciful title that he gave himself. Not only was he a
singer but he also played various musical instruments as
well, notably the trumpet. He had a big voice with a big
personality to match - in fact he was a big man in every
sense the word; I don't know what he weighed, but it must
have been in excess of 20 stone (127/128 kilos), reminiscent
of another Maori singer from the Sixties, the late Rama
White - she was a wonderful woman with a great sense of
humour, who was often advertised as a -' Ton Of Fun'!
Tui
used to drive around in a station wagon - I think it was
a 'Chevy' Impala and, where most people would have ' Go-Faster'
stripes/decals, Tui had wood paneling that had been beautifully
decorated with artistic Maori carvings - rather ostentatious
but it did help to create the impression that he was a -
'Real Prince'! That's Showbiz! It was quite a sight to see
him get into the car - you could actually see the vehicle
lean over, the springs groaning as they took his magnitudinous
weight! How he drove it I'll never know, most of the steering
wheel disappeared within the folds of his gargantuan stomach!
The
last time we saw Prince Tui Teka was at the Parramatta League's
club (which was one of our regular club bookings), in Sydney
Australia, I'm guessing but probably around 1980/81. He
was performing as a guest artist with another New Zealand
Icon - who just happens to be a very close friend of ours,
the famous, Eddie Low - 'The Voice In A Million'! There
were two episodes from that wonderful night that have been
'burnt into my memory banks' forever! The first was when
Eddie and Tui - each standing on opposite sides of the stage,
played, on their trumpets, a stirring rendition of Nini
Rosso's 'Il Silenzio', which brought the house down!
The
other episode was when Eddie sang a song that he had written
himself titled - 'Songs From Home' which had every New Zealander
in the place howling their eyes out, myself included, for
the second time - the first being when Eddie, with his guitar,
popped around to our home in Sydney one afternoon, and sang
it for us, wanting to know what we thought of it. The tears
running down my cheeks told him all that he needed to know.
He headed off to a studio and commercially recorded it!
I really am a 'Softie' at heart! Incidentally, the Secretary
manager of the Parramatta League's club in Sydney was a
chap called Bruce Cameron, who used to manage the Tainui
Motor Hotel in Whakatane, which is where my wife Veronica
was brought up and, where we lived prior to leaving for
'Aussie'. It sure is a small world!
I
cannot vouch for the authenticity of this but - 'Where There's
Smoke, There's Fire'! 'Prince' Tui, whilst on tour somewhere,
in the 'Chevy', which was packed with hungry members of
his band etc. pulled into a drive-in 'McDonald's'- up to
that little mesh covered grill that you talk into. Winding
the window down Tui says -" I'll have Five Big Macs,
Three chickens - Five large chips and -Three large Cokes!"
"Will that be all sir?" queried the tinny voice
that issued from the speaker - that probably belonged to
some snotty, pimply-faced fifteen year-old. Turning around
Tui says, "And What Do You Fella's Want!!! 'Prince'
Tui Teka died in 1985, at the age of - 48! 'Nuff said!
Tui
Teka is buried at Tokomaru Bay, which is on the East coast
- around 80 odd km N.E. of Gisborne, h/way 35, where the
ruins of a frozen - meat plant and port installations are
witness to better times. A Maori meeting- house, built in
1934, with some beautiful Maori carvings on display, is
also there. Whilst on holiday recently, Jon Zealando stopped
off at Tokomaru Bay and photographed Prince Tui Teka's grave.
Veronica, who remembers Tui well from those early days,
wanted to know if Jon had to use a - 'Wide Angled Lens'!
She can be so SICK at times!
It's
not entirely her fault. After 'hanging' around me more or
less 24 Hours a day, for the best part of 31Years and, being
bombarded with my wicked sense of humour, something had
to rub off!!!
