7. Subway Sandwich - John Carey #101
-------------------------------------------
Message by John Carey (UK)
http://www.johncareymagic.co.uk/
I've
always loved the sandwich plot in its many guises including
using the sandwich cards to effect a four Ace production.
My friend Bill Goodwin has a beautiful version called Hold
the Mayo. I've played around with a few sequences but the
following is quite lean and mean with a really strong finale.
Set
your deck up with the Jokers on top followed by three Aces.
Place the other Ace on the bottom of the deck. Naturally
this is an opening piece. "Sometimes I can't do this
stuff all alone and need a little help from my friends!"
Push over the top two cards of the deck face down into the
right hand, at the same time obtaining a left pinky break
beneath the three Aces. Flip the Jokers face up on top of
the deck and immediately pick up all the cards from above
with the palm down right hand. The left thumb peels off
a face up Joker onto the deck and then the right hand drops
its card/s square on top, this secretly sandwiching three
face down Aces in between the Jokers. Credit to Al Leech
for the steal and Ed Marlo for the sandwich load.
"Let's
put these little guys to work and see what they can do!"
After you say this briefly cover the deck with your right
hand in a mysterious fashion and then bring it away. Pull
the face up Joker in view back towards you about a third
its length revealing a face down card. A moment later push
this face down card forward with the pads of the right fingers
and then take it out and drop face up to the table revealing
an Ace. Ask your helper to cover the deck and then you repeat
the first production, pulling back the Joker and then pushing
out a face down card and tabling a second Ace.
"They
say that the third time's a charm. Watch!" Cover the
deck a moment and this time push over the top three cards
of the deck and take them in a spread condition into the
right hand. Pull the face down card trapped between the
Jokers forward and then lower the right hand to the table
and let the face down card slide out. Secure a left pinky
break above the Ace on the bottom of the deck with a pull
down move. Ask a spectator to turn over the face-down card
revealing yet another Ace. As they do this, you will execute
a Marlo variation of the classic Jinx Switch: Simply flip
the Jokers face-down onto the deck and then table the deck
with the exception of the Ace on the bottom that you have
a break above (pictured).
"Is
there any limits to these Jokers powers?!" To conclude
the effect bring both hands together and magically transform
the Jokers into the fourth and final Ace. The thing that
makes this production effective is rhythm. You want to work
at a nice brisk but not hurried pace, creating the illusion
of the Jokers producing Aces almost instantly. I've had
a lot of fun with this sequence and I sincerely hope you
do too.

9. The Orchante Saga - Beginnings
-------------------------------------
Written by the late Tommy Orchard (The Amazing Orchante)
A
'Blast From The Past'!
A
few weeks ago I received an E-mail from Jon Zealando, who
has been my good friend since - hang on a moment while I
brush the cobwebs aside and peer back, past the swirling
mists of.. oh dear God, since 1959! My poor old bones are
creaking, just thinking about it! Although his real name
is Trevor Hodson, everybody as far back as I can remember,
has always called him, Jon; I shall continue the tradition
- anyway, it's easier to type three letters. He was telling
me that he had been holidaying with his son Brian for four
weeks in a camper-van, from Auckland - following the East-coast
To Wellington then back up again via Palmerston North, calling
on a few 'Names' from 'ancient' times that he thought may
jog a few memories. They did!
In
Gisborne, Jon met up Mike Brittenden, who used to be on
the committee organising the Christmas shows at the Sound
Shell back in the Sixties. Jon informed me that Mike had
an anecdote about myself. I asked Jon if he would contact
Mike, requesting that he recount the
'story', in his own words, and if I could reproduce it here,
in my Saga. Happily, Mike consented; here then, is his tale,
word-for-word!
From:
Mike Brittenden
Hi, Jon,
Me, and my big mouth! The sands of nearly half a century
have fallen into the glass of time since that incident.
(How's that for an opening line!)
It
would have been somewhere between 1962 and 1967 - I'd have
to root through the 'Herald's' morgue and look at the advertising
to get any closer. There were just the two of us in the
prefab ticket box that 'Chopper' Summersby had built. I
am guessing that it was midweek, and a quiet night. I know
that it was indifferent to 'shitty' weather, with a house
to match. I made a point of never stopping selling tickets
while there was movement in the carnival area, and always
kept
one window open until I heard the chaser. On occasion, the
finale would conclude without this music and the crowd would
ooze back to the camping grounds and car parks and the money
takers would be unaware...There were always 'Internal Amusement
Sources' within the ticket box when the windows finally
closed.
On
this night, I was counting the cash when a 'scratch' on
the door indicated that 'The Amazing Orchanté' was
about to grace us with his presence. I had seen him before,
but was unsure when. At first glance I thought he was Michael
Chamberlain. He modestly introduced himself as a 'One Man'
Show, and was looking for a spot. As you know, this was
rather unusual. George Tollerton, Eddie Hegan, or Phil Warren
(Well known LATE Auckland 'show biz' promoters - Tom), or
whoever was co-ordinating our shows, prearranged the circuit
months earlier, and we padded the weaker nights with talent
quests, etc. During the course of discussing what he could
do, Mr Orchard indicated that he was a - 'Hypnotist Of No
Mean Calibre'!
Helen,
my girlfriend/fiancée/wife at the time, depending
on the year, interrupted our conversation with the words,
"And who are your stooges?" or something equally
rude. Before I had a chance to intervene, Orchanté
said something quietly to her, her knees sagged, and she
was parallel to the pine needles on the wooden floor! She
rapidly regained her feet, but made no further contribution
to the conversation. Naturally, I arranged for him to get
a spot, and he met the resident compere the following morning.
Unfortunately
I missed seeing his performance, and have not heard of him
since until our conversation the other night. Over the intervening
years I wonder if he realised how much I would have paid
for that one secret, and in total confidentiality! Knowing
how he did what he did would have changed the course of
my life. With his secret, by now I would have been a "Has
Been", instead of a "Never Was!" Hope this
fills the bill, Ciao, Thank you Mike! As I said to our old
friend 'Jon', in our case it is more like - "Didn't
You Used To Be.?"; or - "What's an -'Orchanté'?".
'Cheeky Bastards'!!!
