4. Houdini Festival Scheduled for 2021
-------------------------------------------
Message by Wayne Alan (US)
World
Champion Illusionist Wayne Alan has announced that "The
Houdini Festival" will be held at The Historic North
Theatre in Danville, Virginia, on April 8-10, 2021 (April
6 was the date that Houdini celebrated as his birthday.).
The Historic North Theatre is a beautifully restored 1947
vaudeville house with 500 seats and a full balcony owned
and operated by Wayne Alan. Due to the pandemic the number
of in-person attendees are still unknown. Even under the
best scenario, there will be a limit of only 313 in-person
attendees. Send an email to Wayne@WayneAlanMagic.com to
be put on our mailing list for updates (put Houdini Festival
in subject line). A new website will be up in November.
A refundable $50 deposit for in-person attendees will give
you priority seating. Reservations can be made by calling
434-793-SHOW (7469) or emailing Wayne@WayneAlanMagic.com
The goal is to bring together Houdini aficionados, magic
collectors, escape artists and magicians. The Friday night
show will feature Magic Castle award winners and the Saturday
night show will showcase FISM winners. Plus, dealer displays,
a viewing of a Houdini movie on the big screen, Houdini
memorabilia display and other surprises. Close-up shows
will be held in the Balcony Mini-Theatre with beautifully
raked seating to provide for an amazing viewing experience.
The first 113 in-person registrants will watch the close-up
live while the others watch on the big screen in the main
theatre. Because of its uniqueness we are hoping to receive
national publicity, not only in the magic press but also
in the mainstream media.
In Wayne Alan's research for his upcoming Houdini book,
he discovered that Houdini had an affinity for the number
13. Based on numerous cost factors and Houdini's lucky 13,
the rates for the convention will be $169 (13x13) for online
and $213 in person. Individual tickets for certain (non-secret
revealing) sessions and shows will be available to the general
public. Reservations can be made by calling 434-793-SHOW
(7469) or emailing Wayne@WayneAlanMagic.com

5. Christmas Magic In The Air!
-------------------------------------------
Message by Marvin Berglas (UK)
Learning
Magic is more popular than ever according to Marvin Berglas
- creator of the world's biggest and best known magic brand
- Marvin's Magic - who this week celebrate 33 years of their
professional magic made easy. Marvin highlights the incredible
upsurge of interest in magic this year.
It's
a combination of factors including more and more families
wanting to be entertained and learning new skills in these
difficult times. Our award winning magic combines traditional
family values with cutting edge technologies to give innovation
and a contemporary feel to this cherished art form.
Parents
love seeing their children enjoying learning and growing
in confidence through interacting and performance rather
than merely being attached to their screens.
This
was highlighted by Retail and On Line giants, Argos who
chose magic as the theme for their highly acclaimed Christmas
TV ad campaign. Says Marvin "We were thrilled that
our Marvin's Amazing Box of Tricks was chosen to be the
main featured item in this prestigious advert, highlighting
the fun young Daisy and Lucy had entertaining their family
with a magic show. The sound track is Gary Barlow's catchy
new single "Incredible" and again we were prominently
featured in their social media campaign".

6. Spirits Are You There?!!!! - John Carey #99
-------------------------------------------
Message by John Carey (UK)
http://www.johncareymagic.co.uk/
Here's
a fun spirit writing effect I'm having so much fun with.
You
will require a deck of cards and three blank faced cards.
On one of the blank facers write your force card in squiggly
'spirit waiting'. Let's say that card is the Ten of Hearts.
Place the spirit message card face down on top of the two
other blank faced cards. Set the actual Ten of Hearts on
top of your deck and you are ready to roll.
Bring
your deck out first and flip it face up displaying the faces.
Turn the deck face down and run your force card to the bottom
of the deck with an overhand shuffle. Retain it there with
a simple slip shuffle. Table the deck and ask a spectator
to cut off about half. You place the lower half on top at
an angle in readiness for Max Holden's classic Cross Cut
Force. Shift the focus for a few seconds as you introduce
the theme of the occult and the spirit world. Mention that
you will conduct an experiment in this area. State that
spirits need something to work with. Ask your helper to
lift off the upper angled packet and take a peek at the
face card of that packet your force card and put the thought
of that card in their mind. The deck is assembled and set
aside.
Comment
that you have some spirit plates with you. Bring out your
three face down spirit card plates and execute a double
turnover, showing a blank face. Turn the double card face
down and take it into the right hand. Use the left edge
of that card to flip the next card face up, once again showing
a blank. Place that face up card under the face down right
hand card. Finally flip the remaining blank faced card face
up and place it on top of the other two cards, sandwiching
a face down card between two face up cards. Square up and
flip the packet over. This display looks exceedingly fair.
Ask your spectator to extend their left hand palm up and
place the packet onto it. Direct them to place their right
hand on top trapping the cards. Mention you also have a
pen from the spirit world. Take out an invisible pen and
mine popping it inside their hands.
"So
you're just thinking of a card. Let's see if the spirits
are with us today!" Now to conclude the effect with
a visually stunning revelation I saw Paul Wilson perform
in an Ace routine called Alias the Aces on the Art of Magic
website: Bring both of your hands together and start briskly
rubbing them back and forth. Ask the spectator to do the
same. Now the fun part!
As
they keep rubbing their hands, friction will cause the message
card to eerily emerge from their hands. It's almost like
a rising card in their hands. One try of this and you will
be hooked. It looks that great! So the message appears and
it says Ten of Hearts, your spectator should freak out and
the spirits work is done for the day!

7. Ongoing Adventures Of Romany! #32
--------------------------------------------
Message by Romany (UK)
Hello
from the Magic Cottage!
This
last Monday, I acted as celebrant for my friend's son funeral.
He was only 18 and a creative, intelligent, questioning
young man. Preparing for the service last week, I wanted
more than anything to create a beautiful, loving ceremony.
And we did. His father, godfather and I, all being professional
magicians, were overly qualified to do it right.
In
these days following, I realise I underestimated the effect
of the day. I thought that since I was only the space holder
for the grief of his family and friends, it would be fairly
simple and not affect me much. But how can you see a family
and his friends experiencing so much grief and not be affected?
Answer? You can't.
Then
you have the UK in total lockdown and the American election
which might be decided by the time you get Alan's e-zine.
It's all quite a lot to deal with! Plus our government has
once again stated today that it will continue to exclude
3 million self -employed tax payers from any financial help.
I have so many magician friends who like me are having to
live on their savings alone since March while the government
ignore us. Their treatment of artists is unfathomable and
very unfair.
I recognise that times are tricky and call for special measures
for self-care. I'm sure it's different for you but my self-care
techniques include buying myself flowers, making nutritious
food, watching a film, phoning friends, getting out in the
fresh air. I've given myself a break this week from any
creative deadlines and am hunkering down for a few days
to rest and recuperate before I hike up a mountain at the
weekend to celebrate my birthday.
What
are your self-care techniques and take a moment to reflect.
It is the perfect time to put some in place?
Love
to you all.
Romany

10. The Orchante Saga - Beginnings
-------------------------------------
Written by the late Tommy Orchard (The Amazing Orchante)
Rock
n' Roll - The Show - Another Pilot/Adventure - Travelogue
Many
of the hotels I performed in didn't have a band and often
asked if I could provide dance music after the show. No
problem! With my collection of original vinyl 45's records
I had recorded on my reel to reel tape recorder, a solid
- Six Hour, Rock n Roll mix of non-stop 'Hits', starting
from the late Fifties - right through to the end of the
Sixties, that was guaranteed to get anybody up on the floor
and 'Rockin'! Played through the amplifier/speakers that
I used for my show - with the volume whacked right up, it
sounded like every major Pop Singer and Instrumental Group
was there, live! I reckon it must've been New Zealand's
first 'Disco', and without all the inane screaming and chatter
of today's Disc Jockeys!
The
'Orchanté Hotel Show', although about one hour in
total length, consisted of three totally different acts,
each was 20 minutes in length, with a 15 minute break between
each one, which not only gave us time to set up for the
next performance but more importantly, allowed the patrons
to replenish their drinks, after all, pub/hotels do make
their money from selling booze, apart from accommodation,
of course! Kicking off at 8.15 p m. I started with my 'Sleight-Of-Hand
Magic' show, and followed it 15 minutes later with the 'Yoga/Fakir'
show, which consisted of, in sequence - Fire-eating, the
- Beds of Nails, Sword Swallowing and finishing with the
'Psychic Surgery'. The final 20 minutes was taken up with
the 'Mime' act, which may seem surprising because the spectacular
'Fakir Show' without doubt, was the far stronger of the
performances!
I
discovered very early in the piece that by around 9:30pm
a rather 'Boozed Up' audience did not really appreciate
the more serious Fakir style show, what they wanted by then
was a good laugh, and the rather risqué - to put
it mildly, Mime Act - was just the ticket, to finish on
a high note! Also surprising was the number of people who
thought that more than one artist was involved - I guess
because each act was so different (as was my stage clothing),
from the other, especially
the Fakir act, it was easy to mistake me for somebody else,
and I only spoke, occasionally, during the magic show. Another
thing worth noting, is that I played Rock n Roll music before
the start of the show and during the breaks of each act,
which kept the whole crowd in a happy mood - the atmosphere
was more like a great big party! In many of the 'back water'
hotels we performed in, especially down on the West coast
of the South Island the Liquor Licensing Laws have been
flouted with impunity for years, consequently, 'The Party'
and my recorded music would carry on, long after the official
closing time - Whoopee!!
Last
episode, I spoke about the two helicopter pilots I met at
the Haast Pass Motor Hotel; well about a week later we were
at a large hotel in Te Anau (for a two night show), a beautiful
tourist town on the picturesque lake of the same name -
about 105 miles (168km), south-west of Queenstown (Highways
6/94 - 2Hrs 45min.driving) - anyhow, talk about coincidences,
I was chatting to some bloke and his son at the bar - telling
him about my helicopter experiences up at the 'Haast' and
bugger me if he doesn't 'floor' me with - "I'm a flight
instructor out at the local aero club", and that if
I wasn't busy he'd take me up the next day! Duly arriving
at the airport I'm met by the son who informs me that his
father had unexpectedly been booked to take some tourists
on a 'lucrative' scenic flight, but that he, also a qualified
pilot, would take me up for a 'jaunt', if that was okay
by me. It sure was!
Once
we got up in the air he says - "Shall we do the usual
tourist thing or, are you GAME for something a little different?"
Without hesitation I said, "Something Different"-
without a clue of what he had in mind! I can't remember
whether we headed South West to Manapouri, or North West
across Lake Te Anau towards the world-renowned - 'Milford
Sound'! Rudyard Kipling described it as the - "8th
Wonder Of The World"! What I do remember is the most
gorgeous, spectacular and unbelievable scenery you can imagine,
as my pilot 'friend' flew the little Cessna airplane, over
dense forests, through passes, across river flats, small
lakes and up over majestic mountains. Is it any wonder then,
that 'Kiwis' (New Zealanders), call New Zealand - 'Gods
Own'!
We
were flying over some mountain peaks - I'm guessing but
I would estimate the height was around six or 7000 ft (213
3.6m), when he suddenly dropped the Cessna's nose as we
flew over a crest and then, sharply banking the aircraft,
started to circled down - instinctively, I knew that this
was the - 'Something Different'!
As
we spiraled down we were completely encircled by towering,
black mountains that appeared to be only feet away from
the Cessna's wing tips, you sure wouldn't want to be claustrophobic!
Continuing on a permanent steep bank angle, downwards -
he pointed to the valley floor far below and says to me,
"We're going to land down there, on that strip ".
" What strip?" I queried as I desperately searched
for anything that resembled a runway, and not seeing a thing
- "There's
simply nowhere that you can possibly land this aircraft!"
Again pointing down he says, "See that strip of brown
down there, that's it". "You must be kidding,
" I said, staring down, "That's only a minuscule
pencil mark!"
Now
I'm not sure of my facts here, but I think he said that
it was the top of a new hydro-electric Dam that was being
built, but I can't find any references regarding a Dam being
built down there during the early-Seventies, although a
power-station was built - 700 ft under the mountains at
'West Arm', which is across the other side of Lake Manapouri
and, a road was constructed from there to Deep Cove, but
I don't know when, or what year it was built. The other
possibility is, perhaps, the top of the 'Homer Tunnel',
North-West of Lake Te Anau, not far from Milford Sound.
Dear me, this narrative has turned unintentionally into
- A Travelogue! The New Zealand tourist industry will be
pleased!
Eventually,
we were just a few hundred feet off the valley floor as
he flew over the 'landing strip', circled around - lined
up and made a perfect landing on a length of dirt that was
not much wider than the aircraft itself - the Cessna's wingspan
is 36ft(10.97m) and requires 1570ft to takeoff - so I would
guess that the actual length of the dirt strip was about
2000 ft, because there wasn't much left of it when we did
eventually lift-off! No wonder then, that from five or 6000
ft up, the 'strip' was - to my eyes, nothing more than a
mere - insignificant 'pencil mark'! One really does have
to admire the flying skills of those pilots who, practically
every day, fly in and out of these beautiful but extreme
conditions - not just in New Zealand but around other places
of the world as well, Canada for example!
I've
always wanted to learn to fly but was never in one place
long enough to learn. Many years ago Peter Telling, a qualified
pilot and an Auckland radio announcer/personality - I think
he used to be on either Radio Hauraki or Radio I; took me
up flying out at the Ardmore aerodrome. Peter, an accomplished
aerobatics flyer, decided that it would be great fun if
he could make a Sword Swallower - Sick! He threw the book
at me! Aileron Rolls, Barrel Rolls, Loop Overs and Unders,
the Falling Leaf - the lot! Fully expecting me to be 'Green
Around The Gills' after putting me through his idea of 'Torture',
he gleefully enquired as to - 'How I Felt', and was rather
'Put Out' When, I replied, 'Brilliant'! It was the truth
- I loved it! Peter gave me some rudimentary instructions
on how to fly straight and level and, a couple of turns
left and right, using the rudder pedals as well as the yoke.
He told me later that I had natural co-ordination (Sleight-Of-Hand
Magic - Training?), and learning to fly would be relatively
easy for me. Oh well, never mind, I've got my - 'It's As
Real As It Gets', Simulator and, if it is good enough for
the professionals, it is sure good enough for me!
