3. David Copperfield - National Museum Of American Jewish
History
--------------------------------------------
Article by Peter Phillips (US)
USA
Today
National
Museum of American Jewish History to honor magicians Houdini,
David Copperfield
The
Philadelphia-based National Museum of American Jewish History
will honor two men who entertained the world with their
magic.
The
museum announced it will induct illusionists Harry Houdini
and David Copperfield into its Hall of Fame on December
12. The museum says the award recognizes the achievements
and contributions of American Jews "who share and exemplify
the ideals of the stories explored in the museum".
Houdini
was born Erik Weisz in Hungary in 1874 and came to America
when he was 4 years old. The son of a rabbi, he toured the
U.S. and the world as a magician until his death in 1926
at age 52.
Copperfield,
64, was born David Kotkin in New Jersey. He has earned 21
Emmy Awards, and will accept the honor from his International
Museum and Library of the Conjuring Arts in Las Vegas.
"From
immigrant Harry Houdini to first-generation American David
Copperfield, this event clearly demonstrates what's possible
when individuals are simply given the chance to be great,"
said museum trustee Sharon Tobin Kestenbaum.
Previous
recipients of the museum's award include the late Supreme
Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg and director Steven Spielberg.

4. November Genii Magazine

Subscribe
to Genii today for as little as $35 at www.geniimagazine.com.
Make it three years and you can get Charlie Miller's 600-page
"Magicana" book for only $25 plus postage.
Francis
Menotti, on the cover of our November issue, is a brainy
fellow and it comes through in the magic he performs. He
impressed me greatly when I saw him perform and lecture
enough that I asked him to join Genii as one of our rotating
book reviewers. He's diligent and thoughtful in his approach
to magic, which puts him a cut above.
The
Tenyo company of Japan released its 2021 new line of tricks
recently and copies flew my way by Fedex from Tokyo. There
are four regular tricks (less than usual due to the pandemic)
and one special item - a very special item, and all are
on video in our digital edition.
Tannen's magic camp has been providing fun and magical instruction
to kids each summer for decades. This year, of course, was
different - a virtual event was held with more attendees
and famous magician guests and teachers than ever before.
Jeff Prace was there, and he'll tell you all about it.
Mike
Caveney's "Classic Correspondence" has a letter
from Faucett Ross to John Carney.
I don't know about your house, but here at chez Kaufman,
The Great British Baking Show is being binged on a regular
basis. It turns out that it's the same at chez Hannibal
as well, as you'll find out in the new installment of "Happiness
is the Road."
Krystyn
Lambert penetrates the veil between the real and spirit
worlds in "Stage as Studio".
"Positive Magic for Kids," the three-part collaboration
between Richard Wiseman and David Kaye, returns this month
with a focus on a trick known either as "Bracelets
to Necklace" or "Eternal Rings".
Jon
Racherbaumer says that he never touched the cards in "Exhumations".
John
Bannon just can't help it - he's drawn to "Jazz Aces"
in the same way I'm drawn to ice cream. Read his latest
handling in "Dealing With It".
This
month's "Magicana" consists of one extremely good
coin routine by Japanese magician Masashi Noshita in which
three different coins vanish one at a time and fly to a
folded handkerchief. I know coin workers will enjoy this.
"The
Eye" has coverage of David Blaine's successful "Assentation"
and other news.
Well-known
magician Suzanne is our guest reviewer this month, attending
to tricks. Elliott Terral and Nathan Coe Marsh review books
and videos, respectively.

5. Aiden Sinclair On The Magic Word Podcast
-------------------------------------------
Message by Scott Wells, M.I.M.C. with Gold Star
This
week we celebrate the Halloween season with Aiden Sinclair
who is the resident "medium at large" in Colorado's
famed "Stanley Hotel". The Stanley Hotel was the
inspiration for Stephen King to write "The Shining"
that was later produced into a blockbuster hit movie. Vince
presents bizarre performances with his show "Illusions
of the Passed" which is not misspelled. He does commune
with those who have passed. He also performs at the haunted
Winchester House and aboard the equally haunted Queen Mary.
This week Aiden tells us how he got to where he is and why.
His journey is incredible and inspiring, some of which are
shown in the videos from "America's Got Talent"
[sic] on our blog.
You
can listen to this episode wherever you get your podcasts,
But for more content, please visit: https://www.themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/583-aiden-sinclair
And be sure to join us on our "sister broadcast",
Magic and Martinis Thursday Virtual Happy Hour that is live
streaming on Facebook and YouTube each Thursday night from
7:00-8:00 Central Daylight Time. All the details are in
the weekly podletter so be sure to subscribe and learn more
about it. Tonight (October 29th) we have a "Spooktacular"
themed night featuring Todd Robbins, Vince Wilson and Jamie
Salinas.
Finally,
we want to congratulate Kevin O'Donnell and Colby Higgs
who were the winners of our recent contest. They won a two
volume set of "The Golden Age of Magic Posters - The
Nielsen Collection" from Gabe Fajuri. We had well over
100 entrants in the contest. Learn about all of our current
contests in the weekly podletter.

6. Count Us In! - John Carey #99

Message by John Carey (UK)

Count
Us In is a powerful and yet almost self working predicted
card at any number style effect. It's bold and a lot of
fun to do. On the back of a business card write Seven of
Diamonds. Slip this into a pay envelope. Take a deck of
cards and set the two Jokers on top. Finally take out the
Seven of Diamonds and position it seventeenth from top and
you are in business.
Bring
out the deck and the envelope. Set the envelope aside without
fuss. Table the deck as you address two spectators. "Lori
and Shannon, numbers play an important role in our day to
day lives. So many numbers for this and in turn numbers
for that. Lori, I will snap my fingers and ask
you to call out a number say between five and ten. Go! That's
interesting. Now it's your turn Shannon. But to make it
interesting call out a different number in our range. Go!"
Now is there any way I could have known what numbers each
of you would think of?"
Let's
now deal with the extremely simple, but subtle way of dealing
with the numbers named. If the combined total is 17 we do
nothing and pass the deck to our helper. If it's 16 we casually
flip the Joker on top face up and pocket it, saying it doesn't
really have an identity. If the number
combined is 15 we flip both Jokers face up and pocket them.
For the number 14 we take off the Jokers into the right
hand, secretly securing a left pinky break beneath the top
card. Flip the Jokers face up on top of the deck and spread.
Then take them and the card beneath your break and pocket
those cards. Finally for 13 we do exactly the same as 14,
except this time we steal two cards. Then the deck is handed
to one of our two spectators.
Walk
and talk your spectator through a classic Jay Ose False
Triple Cut and have them gather up the packets and square
up. "If we combine both of your numbers we get? Let
them answer whatever that total may be. Ask the person with
the deck to deal and count face up to the number, revealing
the Seven of Diamonds. Pick up the envelope, take out the
business card and reveal your successful prediction.
Notes:
If
the combined total is 16 have the spectator deal face down.

7. Ongoing Adventures Of Romany! #31
--------------------------------------------
Message by Romany (UK)
Hello
from the Magic Cottage!
It's
raining here. Was it raining last week? It seems to rain
a lot here in my new home in Cumbria.
Guess
what I did last weekend?
I
spent 18 hours with Jeff & Abby McBride, Larry Hass,
Paul Draper, Tobias Beckwith, Jade and Lance Burton!
Plus
another 100 magicians, all from my armchair in the Magic
Cottage.
Last
weekend was the McBride Mystery School Magic and Meaning
conference. A homecoming for many magicians who have been
to the school's events over 30 years.
As
you know, I haven't done any magic since my last show in
February I've been busy promoting my book but haven't felt
called to devise a zoom show. It didn't matter. Once a magician,
always a magician I think.
It
was super interesting to hear the very different ways so
many magicians have responded to this 'new normal'.
We
had mini ten minute lectures, magic teaching and outbreak
rooms for meeting and discussion. One of my favourite lectures
was by Judge Brown on the forgotten power of the magic wand.
Probably like many of you, I've only used a wand for cups
and balls. Of course, it has so many other uses. I'll have
to figure out what style of wand my own stage persona would
have.
The
weekend gave me so many ideas and reminded me that of course
I still love magic.
Today,
I am writing the trailer for my book that I'm going to film
next week. I'm planning to stage it in costume using magic.
And maybe a bit of magical editing too. Watch this space.
Hopefully I'll be able to share it with you next week.
Oh,
I nearly forgot! Do you remember last week that after I
appeared on the BBC arts programme, I offered them the story
that they support the arts in these difficult times by reviewing
my book? Then the producer wrote a blunt and dismissive
email back? Then I blogged online about it and tagged the
programme?
Two
days ago, the BBC rang to apologise! They also said they
would consider my idea.
The
motto of this story?
Have
the courage to ask and the courage to stick to your guns
when you know you're doing something to inspire the world!
Love
to you all.
Romany
PS:
Have you read Spun Into Gold - The Secret Life of a Female
Magician? Because I'll keep reminding you until you're the
9,999,999th person who hasn't!
You
can read more about Romany's magical adventures in her inspiring
memoir Spun Into Gold - The Secret Life of a Female Magician,
available worldwide and as an audiobook.

The
Magic Collection of Rüdiger Deutsch - Part II auction
this Saturday
Over
the last twelve years, we've offered an astonishing amount
of magic apparatus at auction. But no single collection
has included so many unusual, beautiful, and one-of-a-kind
props as Rudiger Deutsch's. Deutsch had an eye for the very
best, and this catalog shows it. The props he constructed
were built to the highest standards, and many of them are
foolers - suitable for modern day audiences. But let's not
forget the antique and collectible artifacts in the auction,
either.
From
micro-magic and association items to mechanical marvels,
this is one sale in which my favorite lots were nearly impossible
to select. Good luck to everyone who participates on auction
day!

9. Ken Brooke Special Limited Edition
--------------------------------------------
Message by Paul Stone
November
3rd 2020 is a very significant date in the magical diary.
And no, I'm not referring to the U.S. Presidential Election.
November 3rd would have been the 100th Birthday of one of
the most influential magicians of the last century, Ken
Brooke.
A
wonderful performer, teacher, mentor and magic dealer, Ken
was one of the greatest magic demonstrators of all time,
and his advertising materials and detailed instruction sheets
were superb and way ahead of the time.
If
you are a Ken Brooke aficionado or a magic collector watch
out for a couple of special limited edition releases commemorating
this landmark for a very unique and much loved magic personality
and performer.

10. The Orchante Saga - Beginnings
-------------------------------------
Written by the late Tommy Orchard (The Amazing Orchante)
Goodbye
Timaru - Home - the N.Z. hotel circuit - Adventures
Without
going into a whole swathe of details, Eddie Brooks and Galaxy
Enterprises went 'BUST', so Veronica and I packed up our
Super Snipe, and the sign written, colour matched trailer
we towed behind it, which some 'wit' knick-named - 'The
Queen Mary'-because at night, with all the running lights
on, it resembled a cruise liner sailing down the highway;
said goodbye to Timaru and the haunted house and headed
for home. Although I call Whakatane - a town on the East
Coast of the North Island, in the Bay of Plenty, 'Home',
I was actually born in
Auckland city. When Veronica's parents left Scotland for
New Zealand, (Veronica was only two and a half/three years
old) they settled in Whakatane. My grandparents from my
mother's side, came from the Te Teko - Edgecumbe area, which
is only 13/20 miles from Whakatane, consequently when I
met Veronica and eventually her parents, I felt very much
at home, geographically as well as personally.
After
years of temporary planting 'grass roots' all over the place,
we eventually settled in Whakatane - home base from which
to carry on 'stampeding' around the country with our shows.
It was a nice place to come home to, trout fishing in the
lakes and rivers, from Whakatane to
Rotorua (just one of the many sports for which New Zealand
is internationally famous), deep sea fishing as well; pig
shooting and deer stalking in the bush or just plain 'chilling
out' at home, or
relaxing/ sunbathing on the pristine, glistening white sands
of Ohope beach. What the hell am I doing here! Then we emigrated,
via Fiji, to Australia. I've got way ahead of myself, that's
a whole, New 'Book'!
Working
the hotel circuit from one end of New Zealand to the other
was fun; I met all sorts of interesting people, like the
two helicopter pilots at the 'Haast Pass' motor hotel one
night. The Haast Pass is on the West coast of the South
Island, 370km (230miles) highway 6, south of Greymouth or,
around five hours driving NW on State highway 6a/ 6 - unsealed,
from Queenstown. How do I know all this? Because I travelled
those roads so often, I could have done a genuine 'blind
fold drive', backwards, with my eyes shut! Sounds Irish!
We
spent a lot of time in Ireland - it rubs off. Where was
I, oh yes - the helicopter pilots. I met them at the bar
after the show, during my usual close-up magic session -
while having a few drinks with the local 'natives'. Nobody
ever accused me of being a snob. They were deer culling
around the area and invited me to spend the following day
with them, warning me that it most definitely was not the
usual - 'Tourists Scenic Sightseeing' scenario.
These
guys were today's modern-day version of the 'Old Wild West'
cowboys - the helicopter was, metaphorically speaking, their
horse! The whole sky was their 'riding range' and they could
throw that tiny 'bird' around with total, 'apparent' abandonment,
in reality, it was absolute, controlled precision, you were
left gasping at their amazing 'daredevil' flying skills
and the sheer excitement of it all! To them, it was 'just
part of the job'.
Both
doors had been removed from the helicopter to facilitate
shooting their rifles, and they took turns flying while
the other shot the deer. It got rather 'hairy' at times
when the pilot had to hover on alpine slopes while the other
jumped off to secure the deer by a length of rope underneath
the helicopter. They would pick up three at a time - which
was all the mosquito sized helicopter could handle, fly
back to base camp to drop them off then straight back out
again. Talking about mosquitoes, the ones down the West
coast have their own landing strips - there're the biggest
buggers I've ever seen, not to mention the sand flies.
When
the day's business was over (some business) I said,"
What the hell do you guys do for fun?" They laughed
and one of them said, "come on", leaping into
the helicopter, "I'll show you". Flying over dense
natural forest, he suddenly dropped down below the treetops;
the next second we were racing flat out along a river, inches
above the water. Straight ahead a wall of green was rushing
up towards us - I'm thinking, 'my God, can't he see that
where're about to crash' then, at
what seemed to me to be the last moment, he threw the 'chopper'
into a steep turn, whipping around a bend in the river!
He did this several times, following the natural curves
of the river - okay, he's done this god knows how many times
before, for kicks, I hadn't, and I was now sitting a little
higher in my seat - just as well the doors weren't fitted!
Now
he starts to climb out of the river, skimming across the
tops of the impenetrable forest of the 'Mount Aspiring'
National Park - Mount Alba looms up ahead of us and he starts
climbing up through the canyon - like valleys, over snow
covered slopes and ridges, diving straight down into rugged
passes - solid rock only feet away on either side, ducking,
swerving, diving and climbing up towards the peak which
is 2355 metres - damn near 8,000 ft above sea level, and
it was freezing!
When
these guys told me that what they did was - 'Not For Sight
Seeing Tourists', they weren't kidding! The Theme/Leisure
Park Ride has yet to be invented, and never will be, that
could even come close to what these young New Zealand pilots
called, for sheer exhilarating thrills, - fun!!!
Did
you know that most, if not all of the wackiest fun games/sports
that have hit the world - stage, originated from the inventive
minds of New Zealanders. To name just a few -'Bungee Jumping',
'Bar Fly', where you wear a Velcro 'suit' and run the full
pelt at a large board, that is also covered in Velcro, and
take a 'flying' leap at it so that you stick to it! I remember
this particular one was all the rage at various universities
we performed at. The controversial 'Dwarf Throwing', was
another one. And people think I'm mad! Well, I am a 'Kiwi'!
