2. New York - COVID 19
--------------------------------------------
Report by Bill Gleason, New York, USA
Tuesday
October 3, 2020
This
year needs to end. The cost in lives directly from COVID
19 is staggering 1.03 million dead Worldwide, 208,723 deaths
in the USA, 33,199 deaths in New York, and 28,063 deaths
in NYC and Long Island. Here in New York the Departments
of Health are trying to stop the second wave of COVID 19.
Which is just beginning, and it is proving more efficient
at transmission. The health experts are trying to keep it
from getting a foothold in the communities. The infection
rate has stayed low, most people wearing masks, socially
distancing, and following the rules. As the COVID 19 hot
spots are announced you see mask usage go up and the numbers
of people outside go down. You also see the meats and canned
goods fly off the shelves in the stores. We finally are
seeing toilet paper make it to the end of the day on store
shelves this month for the first time since February.
Unemployment
back in April was at 40% on Long Island and everything was
shut down, some places have reopened with reduced hours,
some have reopened with reduced capacity like restaurants
at 25%. While others like halls, theaters, and amusement
facilities remain closed. Now in October we are at 24% unemployment
and most magicians remain unemployed. Saving have been decimated
and there is no end in sight. The schools, libraries, and
social spots will have to address the issue to even allow
magicians back in and contact/interaction due to social
distancing rules. Right now parents are not even allowed
into the schools.
Can
magic shows as they are survive, is clearly in doubt. The
magic industry will have to adapt and conform with the new
social distancing rules/laws. Time also for magic to evolve
social distancing and youth protection guidelines that are
going to be here for the foreseeable future. Audience interaction
and participation will have to be at 6' or greater and get
used to the masks. There are a bunch of other deadly diseases
that gone unchecked since the pandemic started such as TB.
Welcome to the new world and it is going to take years to
fix the damage. Then the stop fooling yourself you can't
make money off of zoom parties, it's not going to pay the
bills.
The question of how deadly this wave will be is still unknown.
The 16A protein change made the virus more efficient at
transmission. In 2 weeks or so we will know if it is more
deadly. Over the past several weeks the infection rate has
climbed, and the death rate has not held pace. In addition,
the number of patients on ventilators has also gone down
proportionately. In April some of my friends were being
treated for COVID 19, some of them died, some have long
term damage, and some did recover. 35 directly died from
the virus, 10 more died indirectly from COVID 19. The American
Cancer Society reported over 20K of cancer patients being
treated died prematurely for to the impact of COVID 19 on
their care. My wife was one of those. She passed in July
losing her 6 month battle with cancer. The section of the
cemetery where she is buried is at 3200+ graves right now
80%+ are COVID 19 patients since March 2020.
I
am here in NY and for a second time we are standing at the
edge of darkness with this pandemic. Will we fall or rise
from the lessons learned at the cost of so many who died.
Magic must find a way to survive and conform with the new
rules and laws that will come due to the pandemic. In some
areas Magicians and others are hurting and every single
dollar counts, they have been unemployed for 9 months with
no income. There is no end of this pandemic in sight, we
hope for a vaccine soon. COVID 19 is going to do devastating
long-term damage to the magic community in more ways than
anyone can project right now.
Be
Safe and wear a mask.

6. No Not Here! - John Carey #97

Message by John Carey (UK)

No
Not Here is a fun and strong mystery card/teleportation
style effect. Minimal handling and maximum impact. My kind
of card magic. Let's say you are working with a blue deck.
Take out the Two of Clubs from it and discard. In addition,
you will require four red backed cards. One of these is
the Two of Clubs and the other three cards are blank faced.
On the back of the Two of Clubs write the word THERE!. Then
write big and bold the words NO, NOT and HERE, one word
on each face of the other three cards. Set the packet face
down with the words in NO, HERE and NOT order from the top
down. Finally place the red backed Two of Clubs on the bottom
of your blue deck and you are in business!
Bring
out the red card packet face down and execute a Stanyon
count with it. This is simply an Elmsley count to pass off
three cards as four. "These are my four emergency cards.
Hopefully I will not require them!" Take out your blue
deck and casually spread face down in the hands, without
exposing the red backer on the bottom. Square up and then
cut the deck in half and complete the cut, securing a left
pinky break beneath your stranger card. The right hand takes
out a sharpie marker and hands it to your helper. Execute
a dribble force to your break and the raise the face of
the right hands cards towards the audience and your helper.
Have them reach over and sign the force card. Allow the
ink to dry and then assemble the deck, centralizing the
signed stranger card. A moment later cut off about a third
of the deck and table it. Then cut off another third and
place that on top of the tabled portion. Finally place the
remaining cards on top of all. This keeps the signed card
around the middle of the deck.
"I
will attempt to cut to your signed card." Cut and lift
off a portion of the deck, avoiding the signed card and
show that you failed. Replace the packet. Repeat this once
more cutting away at a different location. Once again no
joy... Square up the deck and state that you will use your
emergency cards.
Pick
them up and spread them. "Hmmm, that's strange, we
had four cards?! I wonder if the cards are telling us something?"
Deal the cards face up from right to left, forming a row
of cards exhibiting the words NO NOT HERE! This will get
a laugh. "Well if it's not here then maybe... Pick
up the blue deck and ribbon spread it revealing a red backed
card with the word THERE on it in the middle. Have your
spectator take it out and turn it over revealing their signed
card!

Hello
from the Magic Cottage!
All is well, the sun is been shining even in October.
My husband Walkabout is living up to his name and encouraged
(forced) me to hike 8hr /20km up and down mountains last
Sunday with another trek planned for this Sunday. Will I
ever swop hiking boots for high heels again?
Apparently this is what an unemployed magician does at the
weekend here in the Lake District. The mountains are called
Wainwrights after an overly enthusiastic explorer and Oh
Deep Joy, there are 214 of them, which more overly enthusiastic
people 'collect'. So far we've done 14. Do the math's. Another
200 to go. Bring back a Saturday night gig please!
This Saturday though, there WILL be showbiz.
My friend Anthony Darkstone, The President of The International
Assembly of The S.A.M and known fondly as the 'Larry King
of Magic' is doing me the great honour of having me as his
guest for his 'Darkstone Dossiers' interviews.

9. The Orchante Saga - Beginnings
-------------------------------------
Written by the late Tommy Orchard (The Amazing Orchante)
On
tour with the Spectacular '74 Fun and tribulations!
Twenty
City and town centres, from Motueka at the top end of the
South Island of New Zealand to Invercargill, the most Southerly
city - it was quite a run. The tour ran, with other 'ports
of call' in-between - up the East coast from Timaru, Christchurch,
Blenheim etc., across to Nelson, Motueka and then down the
West coast from Westport, Greymouth, Queenstown, Invercargill
and worked our way back up the East coast - Dunedin, Alexandra,
Omarama etc.
The
Travelling arrangements were; 'Prentice' (the band) travelled
in their own van, which carried all their instruments and
sound equipment, the promotions manager Bxxx - who worked
for Eddie Brooks, had his own car and we had ours - a Humber
Hawk. To make things interesting and to prevent boredom
whilst travelling, the artists/band members would switch
cars in which to travel. One day we would have Craig Scott
and Angela Ayers with us the next it could be Brendan Dugan
and a couple of the band members - it was a good arrangement
and worked well until we got to Greymouth, when the oil
rings blew in our 'trusty' Humber Hawk (Bloody 'Murphy'
strikes again). We left the car in Greymouth -to sort out
at the end of the tour.
Jumping
into Bxxx's car was not the most pleasant of experiences.
He was the most personable and likeable of chaps but unfortunately
he suffered from a medical condition that tended, through
no fault of his own, to insult one's olfactory senses somewhat
- it was in fact, way beyond the bounds of etiquette! Even
within minutes of having had a bath/shower his odoriferous
'fragrance' - in simple language, his potent body odour,
could - ''Knock A Buzzard Off A 'Shit' Wagon'' (American
slang for old fashioned sewage collection, by horse and
cart)! In N.Z. it was more politely called - The 'Honey'
Wagon. Aw c' mon, it's history!
To
gain some sort of relief from the unpleasant stench that
emanated from the poor fellow's body, it was wise to have
two windows partly wound down to create fresh airflow through
the car. It was therefore somewhat of a mixed blessing when,
on our way to Queenstown (for a
Sunday night show) - somewhere south of the Haast Pass,
on a freezing cold day, a passing car threw up a stone that
totally shattered the window screen. The glacial temperature
that came off the Southern Alps and later, the 'Remarkables'
(The mountain range that surrounds Queenstown), together
with the wind that howled through the car, even at low-speed,
chilled us right through to the bone marrow!
We
stopped at a store on the side of the road and bought every
newspaper that they had, stuffing them underneath shirts,
trousers, tops and dresses - protection from those freezing
conditions, they didn't help much. Four Hours Later, when
we finally arrive at Queenstown, we must have resembled
'ice statues' we sure felt like it. It took some thawing
out before we were ready for the show that night, and everybody
except Angela Ayers and myself wound up with colds, bad
chests and sore throats, after that Antarctic like experience!
Brendan
Dugan, apart from singing, was also the Compere for the
show and for some reason on this particular night, decided
to appoint himself as -"Me 'Big Chief' - Sound Technician"!
Now there is one thing I just cannot stand, and that is
someone, Anyone - Meddling Or Playing Around With My Sound
Settings, On My Own Sound System - Especially During My
Performance! I have NEVER stumped off stage during my show
in the middle of such a calamity, I was far too professional
for that, but afterwards?
Woe-betide
all concerned - I have been known to cause minor riots!
Sound and lighting men throughout 'Club Land' in Sydney
Australia, in fact all of New South Wales, Queensland etc.,
during the Seventies and Eighties - when we were living
there, quickly learnt to -'Leave Things Alone, where 'The
Amazing Orchanté' was concerned'! Here in Great Britain,
I was especially 'feared' by D. J 's in Disco Clubs from
one end of the country to the other, including North and
Southern Ireland, and the Continent, from the top of Norway
to the Island of Crete! They all
quickly learnt that you "Don't mess with 'Orchanté's'
sound"! (I've digressed)!
Nothing
is more off-putting when performing to split timed music,
for the volume to be suddenly turned down to the point of
inaudibility - then gradually turned up again so that you
can only JUST hear the music. Instantly, everything goes
flat and the excitement that has been generated by your
music as well as your performance has gone - not just for
you but more importantly, your audience.
The
impact could be likened to watching say -'The Lord of the
Rings' at the movies when, right in the middle of a most
dramatic scene, with all the ensuing bangs and crashes etc.
the sound suddenly goes off! I can guarantee that you would
be left feeling - irritated, aggrieved and 'out of it'!
During
the interval, by which time my fury had increased tenfold,
I had Brendan bailed up in a corner - threatening to remove
certain parts of his anatomy that would have a dramatic
effect on his ability to impregnate - from then on! My Maori
blood was on the boil, as was my temper, I was seething.
He was so terrified, as well he should have been, that he
started crying but what really galled me was when he screamed
for Veronica, who came up and put her arms around him
protecting him from me with a "There, There, the 'Bad
Man' will go away soon"! I did, in disgust! He Never
Touched My Sound System Again. Looking back now, I may have
been a bit rough with him but I do like to think that it
was a lesson well learnt that perhaps, may have stood him
in good stead in later years.
Veronica
and I were only 31 years of age when we did this tour -
my God, that's almost 28 years ago, it sounds worse when
you say 'over a quarter of a century' - everybody else was
in their twenties - except Angela who was 18/19yrs.old.
The cheeky 'bitch' called us 'Mum and Dad'! We have fond
memories of 'Tangles' and Angela Ayers sitting on the end
of our bed in various hotels, after shows - listening to
ghost stories that they insisted Veronica relate to them
(she probably got them from her Scottish mother), for the
life of me I can't remember why, now.
Perhaps
it was because Tangles told Angela about the strange 'goings-on',
in the house in Timaru. One night while she was relating
some story to them, she noticed that the bedroom door was
swinging slightly in a draft. Veronica asked Tangles if
he had closed the door when he and Angela had came in. When
he replied, "Yes", Veronica said, "Strange,
it's open now", both he and Angela went white - she
was almost as skittish as he was.
Poor
Tangles - in almost every hotel that we stayed, somebody
would find some reason to convince him that 'bizarre things'
happened there. I remember one hotel that had a trap door
right in the middle of the narrow foyer. The trap was full
of sand so one of the band members (who were all Tangles
mates) stuck a couple of boots into it and then told Tangles
that a skeleton was buried underneath them - He Believed
It.
Another
time, we made sure that Tangles was kept in the bar while
I, using a bit of magical ingenuity, tied one end of black
thread onto a coat hanger in his wardrobe - in such a way
that when it was pulled, all the other coat hangers would
fall off as well. The thread ran from his wardrobe out the
door and along the corridor to the next bedroom. Later that
night, after everyone had gone to bed, we waited for an
hour then pulled the thread. The resultant clanging and
clashing as the coat hangers hit the bottom of the wardrobe
and Tangles terrified screams was music to our ears! Entertainers
and musicians can be such 'Evil Bastards' at times - Thats
Showbiz!
There
was only one 'Bad Thing' during the whole tour, apart from
the Dugan/sound episode; it was a review of the show in
Nelson. I will repeat here word-for-word. It was headed:
-
Unspectacular
'Spectacular'
Sunday evening's family variety spectacular '74 failed to
come up to the standard now expected of professional New
Zealand entertainers. With the one exception the standard
of presentation was disappointingly amateurish.
The
Only Act, Which Managed To Salvage The Show, Was That Of
'Orchanté ', Hypnotist, Sword Swallower, Magician
And A Clever Mimic. He was the sole performer to hold an
otherwise restless crowd quiet while he digested swords
up to their hilts and swallowed flaming torches only to
relight them with regurgitated flame seconds later. In the
second half he mimed songs like "My boomerang won't
come back" and "Well Goodness Gracious Me!"
to the obvious delight of the 600 audience.
Others
who appeared were Craig Scott, the Reflections, Angela Ayers,
Prentice and Brendan Dugan, who compered the show.
Craig
Scott sang most of his more popular hits but Michael Jackson's
"Ben" got him the most applause. He sang that
well.
Angela
Ayers pranced and cavorted her way across a stage. The days
of kicking off the shoes and donning a straw hat belonged
to the Maria Dallas era of six or seven years ago and it
is a pity Miss Ayers is not confident enough in her own
ability to entertain without this.
Prentice,
the backing group really showed how far they have to go
before they become professionals in the true sense of the
word. No matter how many times they have seen the act or
how bored they are with Miss Ayers' back, there is no excuse
for bad manners on stage. If
they wanted to hold private conversations or if they found
the roof of the stage more interesting than the music they
were playing, this should not become obvious to the audience.
Comparisons
are odious, true, but it is difficult not to compare the
supposed professionalism of the show with the Val Doonican
show, which was here last week. Doonican is an international
star with years of experience but if New Zealand entertainers
want a good national following, they will have to take a
look at the image they are presenting.
Angela
Ayers said after the show they were tired and the audience
last night just didn't want to know. Good audience response
evoked a similar response from the stage, she said. But
that was not entirely true. Professionals create an empathy
with the audience. Last night's show barely got off the
ground. - S.C. - Postscript-
Personally,
I think that the critic was who did this review was being
grossly unfair. Yes, a band should always look interested,
whether they are or not but apart from that, I know that
it was a great show, with some very talented New Zealand
performers, who were right at the 'top of the tree' or were
heading that way, at the time. Bloody critics!
My
mate Martin, who comes and stays with us on a regular basis,
told me the other day that when reading the saga's, he has
great fun looking at the various posters that are displayed
around the walls here in the spare bedroom, picking out
the names that he's reading about. He is sure going to have
a field day with this one, as all their photographs are
on display as well!
