3. Alexander Heimbürger
-------------------------------------------
Message by Wittus Witt (Germany)
The
best well known German magician from the 19th Century without
doubt was Alexander Heimbürger (1819-1909).
He
became popular especially in South America between 1840
and 1850. You will find his portrait on the cover of the
Sphinx in September 1909 and on the cover of the Linking
Ring in July 1930.
In
1925 Harry Houdini visited him while he (Houdini) was on
his way to England. At that time Heimbürger was living
in Muenster, in the middle of Germany.
Heimbürger
had shown the "floating child" even before Robert-Houdin.
1882
he published his "Memories" in two volumes.
In
1900 he published a magic book which finally appeared with
14 editions until 1915.
Heimbürger
seemed to be forgotten for many years until Peter Mika from
Dresden discovered his grave in Muenster. Peter started
to investigate Heimbürger's life and finally he wrote
up a fantastic biography which he offered to me to publish.
And I happily did.
While
Peter was researching Heimbürger's life he found out
that Heimbürger also wrote 12 private diaries in book
form from 1840 until 1861. But these books seemed to be
lost also. Until one day when Peter got an address where
he might find these books.
Finally
he asked me if I could get in touch with the owner to talk
with him about publishing the diaries.
The
owner is a well-known professor of Chemistry in Muenster
who received the books from his father in law who was a
journalist and who wanted to write about the books. But
unfortunately he died before he could do that.
To
cut the story short: Now I am transferring the old German
writing into our readable German writing. Book by book.
So far three books have been already published. Book number
4 is almost ready to go the printers and books number 5
and 6 have been completely transcribed by now.
Finally
- I am looking for any advertising material from Heimbürger.
There are some rare posters and playbills I know of - I
also found some Heimbürger tokens but I am looking
for more. I would appreciate any help. If you have something
originally from Heimbürger I would love to obtain a
photo (if you do not want part with the item) and perhaps
I can publish some more pictorial material within one of
the next volumes of Heimbürger's diary.
Please
let me know and write to me. Thank you.

4. Germany - Special Magic Exhibitions
-------------------------------------------
Message by Wittus Witt (Germany)
Some
of you may know that I also run a gallery for contemporary
art (originally I have studied art and art history with
famous art professor Joseph Beuys).
In
between I also put up special magic exhibitions such as
magic postcards, magic book plates, magic posters and so
on.
Last
year I invited artists from around Hamburg to work with
the subject of magic and I donated three prizes to win:
1st 1.000 Euro, 2nd 500 Euro and 3rd 250 Euro.
40
artists participated with some great pictures and sculptures.
For
the prize ceremony I have booked a larger room in a well-known
Hamburg art house than my gallery to give full justice to
this competition.
If
you are interested in some real nice magic Art you may obtain
a catalogue later. I will let you know.
To
my knowledge this is the first magic Art competition ever
organized in my country.

5. Ben Jackson On The Magic Word Podcast
-------------------------------------------
Message by Scott Wells, M.I.M.C. with Gold Star
From
time to time we introduce listeners to magicians who may
not be in the "mainstream" of our community. They
may not be "social animals" on every platform
or they may not be posting YouTube videos or creating the
"trick of the day" for online magic dealers. This
week's guest may fall into one or more of those categories,
but after you have listened, you will have made a new friend
and have respect for what he has done and continues to do.
Ben
Jackson has competed in (including F.I.S.M.) and won several
magic competitions in his early years, though he is still
a young man. His accolades include performing for David
Copperfield in a contest on the NBC network show, "Today";
he has worked both in front and behind the camera for television
shows and movies having consulted and taught magic to celebrities
for their starring roles; he has worked trade shows and
high end corporate shows across the country, and; he has
his own one-man show that has successfully run for five
years in Houston, Texas.
This
week Ben talks about his experiences, shares stories, gives
advice for anyone wanting to create their own one-man show,
and "bares his soul" on this week's episode of
The Magic Word Podcast. You can listen wherever you get
your podcasts, But for more information and to view some
of his incredible work on some videos, please visit the

6. 2020 Magic And Meaning Conference Goes Online!
-------------------------------------------
Message by Jeff McBride (US)
It
is my pleasure to announce that the Mystery School's annual
Homecoming event - the Magic and Meaning Conference - will
be happening this year, and it will be ONLINE.
As
the pandemic surged in recent weeks, it became clear to
the School's wisdom team that the Conference could not proceed
as an in-person event this October. This was true both for
health and safety reasons, but also because so many people
are reluctant to travel for the foreseeable future.
This is, of course, deeply disappointing: The Magic and
Meaning Conference has been our community's time to gather
together, re-connect, and re-charge our love of magic that
matters. And yet, throughout the pandemic, the Magic &
Mystery School has built upon its long experience with the
Zoom platform to design and deliver online programs, courses,
and seminars that have achieved very high quality. For example,
just last week, Jeff, Lance Burton, and I delivered two
full days of the Online Lance Burton Teen Seminar. There
were seventy-six teens, great teaching content, special
guests, lots of breaks, and outstanding engagement from
the teens. From every perspective, the program was a smash
success.
And so we are excited to pivot the 2020 Magic and Meaning
Conference into an online format. The Conference will be
held Saturday and Sunday, October 24-25, 2020, from 10:00am
to 4:15pm PACIFIC, each day.
We're pleased to announce our 30th Anniversary Special Guests:
Lance Burton & Jade - both of whom have confirmed they
will be with us for the virtual conference!
We
are planning to emulate the in-person conference by featuring
online versions of its most beloved events. For example,
there will be:
- 12 Presentations (P-E-P Talks) from attendees. See the
Call for Presentations here: https://www.magicalwisdom.com/about/call-for-presentations.
- Guests of Honor and their Presentations
- Ensemble Shows featuring members of the community
-
Small Group discussions (using the breakout room feature
of Zoom)
- Special Events, such as celebrating the 30th Anniversary
of the Magic & Mystery School, the Festival of Wands
(our archetypal magic tool of the year), and a Broken Wand
Ceremony.
One important benefit of shifting the 2020 Magic and Meaning
Conference to an online event, is that it now becomes accessible
to magicians from all over the world.
To help make it possible for people to sign up in these
challenging times, we have set the tuition for the conference
at $145.00. Also, since this is an online program, people
are eligible to apply for a need-based stipend that will
cover 50% of the tuition. To see if you qualify, go here:
https://www.magicalwisdom.com/scholarships.
We hope you will plan to join us for this incredible celebration
of the Magic & Mystery School's 30th Anniversary! Sign
up now at: https://shop.magicalwisdom.com/event/magic-meaning-2020-online
for an incredible weekend of magic and mystery with our
tribe!

7. Fate! - John Carey #97
-------------------------------------------
Message by John Carey (UK)
http://www.johncareymagic.co.uk/
Fate
is an attempt at simplicity and clarity. The good news is
there are no moves, but the timing and attitude have to
be right to get the very most from this semiautomatic piece
with cards. Let's say we are working with a blue deck. Take
out the two of diamonds from it and replace it with the
same card from a red deck. On the back of this card write
the word FATE in big letters. Place this card second from
the bottom of the deck.
Bring
out the deck and casually spread them without exposing the
red card. A casual centre Hindu shuffle here is good, retaining
the stranger card second from bottom. "Tim, 52 cards
is a lot of cards. Please cut off some cards from the top
and set them aside." He does and then you pick up the
balance and execute a face up overhand shuffle, running
the first two face cards singly and then shuffle off normally,
running your stranger card to second from top. Hold the
packet face up in left hand dealers grip. "Actually,
there's still too many cards. Please pull some from the
middle and discard." Suiting actions to words, spread
your face up packet and ask your helper to remove some cards
from the middle of the spread and discard them like before.
"You
know something, Tim? There's still a problem. Too many cards!"
This gets a laugh and then you ask the spectator to cut
off and discard a few cards from the bottom of the packet.
Spread what's remaining and casually set the lower five
cards of the face up packet, including
your stranger card which is second from the rear/top onto
the table in a packet. Place the remaining cards to the
right of it.
We
are now set to bring the effect home using verbal control
and ambiguity. Yes, it's our old friend Equivoque once more.
"So, Tim, you have had complete freedom and eliminated
many cards. There are two packets on the table. Please pick
either up. If he picks up the target packet you casually
pick up the other packet and discard it. However, if he
picks up the X packet you simply ask him to set it aside
with the earlier discards. Take the target packet, if need
be and state you will form two distinctive groups with these
cards. Deal the face card face down to the table and deal
the next card face up on top of it. Then deal a face down
card on top of those, followed by the face up target card
and finally the last card is dropped face down on top of
all. Spread this packet displaying the face up and face
down mixture. Now for a beautiful piece of verbal ambiguity
I learnt from my friend John Bannon.
"Two
groups of cards remain. Face up and face down. Which group
shall I take out Tim?" If he says face down, you slide
out the three face down cards and discard them. If however
he says face up, no problem. Remove them from the spread
and drop them forward onto the table and casually slide
the face down cards aside discarding them. As you can see,
the phrase 'take out' is beautifully ambiguous. It can be
manipulated to mean take out to use or discard.
Split
the two cards that remain apart and direct your spectator
to push one towards you. If they push the X card towards
you, pick it up and toss it aside with the other cards.
But if they push the stranger back card towards you, casually
discard the other card. "So that's the one you decided
for me."
Pick
up the discarded cards and ribbon spread them face down
showing blue backs. Recap what has taken place and how everything
was under their control, leaving but one solitary card on
the table. "Sometimes in life, things happen that are
simply lucky. Other times we question ourselves when strange
things happen more than once. That's Deja Vu. But occasionally
things go beyond all of that and can only be described as
FATE!!!" The card on the table is turned face down
and your mystery is concluded.

8. Ongoing Adventures Of Romany! #27
--------------------------------------------
Message by Romany (UK)
Hello
from the Magic Cottage!
Twenty
years ago when I was developing my magic act, I found The
Artist's Way very useful. It's a programme by creativity
teacher Julia Cameron, based on the structure of a twelve
step recovery programme. This time, you're a recovering
artist rather than an alcoholic. The exercises are designed
to free you from pesky limiting beliefs, fear, self-sabotage,
jealousy, guilt, and addictions, replacing them with confidence
and productivity. It's fun and highly recommended.
One
of my favourite exercises was to take myself on an 'Artist's
Date'.
The
Artist Date is a once-weekly, festive, solo expedition to
explore something that interests you. The Artist Date need
not be overtly "artistic" - think mischief more
than mastery. Artist Dates fire up the imagination. They
spark whimsy. They encourage play. Since art is about the
play of ideas, they feed our creative work by replenishing
our inner well of images and inspiration. When choosing
an Artist Date, it is good to ask yourself, "what sounds
fun?" - and then allow yourself to try it.
Julia Cameron from The Artist's Way
This
morning, the sun was shining. I decided to take a drive
to Grange-over-Sands. Grange is a cute old-fashioned town
30 minutes away. I thought I'd take a walk along the prom
in the sun, find myself a cafe for an oat milk latte and
then indulge in an artistic shopping spree for new paints
and paper and pens that I need as a yet undiscovered world
class artist. (I'll tell you about that next week!)
I
found a cafe with seats in the sun. I'm allergic to wheat
and dairy and was planning to eat some nuts I'd brought
with me for breakfast with the latte. But the cafe's menu
boasted that it had its own artisan bakery and specialised
in scones. Mmmmm.
Would it be so bad to have a date and walnut whole meal
scone with butter and damson preserve?
I
did. And it was.
Within
a minute of eating it, I had a stomach ache. I'm an idiot!
Note
to self, DO NOT EAT WHEAT OR DAIRY! Doh!
Despite being a prime twat, after breakfast, I carried on
with my Artist's Date.
And
I found
Treasure!
In
a charity shop, I found two beautiful antique magical boxes!
They're actually empty cutlery boxes but are perfect for
storytelling props. Maybe even an appearing candle box if
I can find someone to make it for me! If you want to see
a photo, head over to my blog www.romanymagic.com/magicalmillion
So
what's going on with my Manifest a Million plus readers
challenge, I hear you ask!
It's
full steam ahead. My book is now available as a downloadable
e-book on my site https://www.romanymagic.com/shop and I'm
working on a whole new look for the website. I've put together
a showreel of all the lovely reviews for the book and am
still tinkering with that.
I
imagine it will all be ready and looking fabulous by the
start of November.
How
super-deliciously exciting!
Oh
and a few more magic podcasts are coming up! Next one with
Anthony Darkstone on the 10th October. Keep an eye on social
media to find out about that!
All
my best,
Romany

9. The Orchante Saga - Beginnings
-------------------------------------
Written by the late Tommy Orchard (The Amazing Orchante)
The
'Family Variety spectacular' '74. - Résumé's
On
page 64, last paragraph, I described one of the posters
on the spare bed /computer room - wall, advertising the
above title. I had a vague feeling that I also had a leaflet
regarding the show; the best place to look was in the 'bottomless'
aluminium trunk. A slight digression (Oh no, he's only just
got started) - during various tours of our show throughout
Scandinavia, particularly Norway - we have always admired
the beautiful wooden flooring in the various homes we
visited. So last weekend, with the help of a couple of friends,
the old carpet in the lounge room was ripped up and we put
down laminate flooring. My pal Gary wanted something heavy
to hold down a threshold strip he had glued, so I pointed
to the aluminium trunk saying, "That should do the
trick". Now Gary is a big, strong, 6ft. plus - bloke,
but he sure grunted as he picked up the trunk. "Bloody
hell" he said, "what have you got in here, bricks"?
" No", I replied, "Only The
World, According To Orchanté"!
Opening
the lid of the trunk is a bit like watching the surf on
a beach - various bits and pieces of information, washes
up like sea foam on a sandy shore, swelling and overflowing
up and out of the trunk in a continuous cycle. Dipping my
hand into the 'tide' as it were - up floated, from somewhere
within its swirling depths of times past and into my searching
fingers, the aforementioned leaflet, which turned out to
be the actual souvenir programme of the show. My
seemingly bottomless aluminium trunk 'knows things' - of
this I'm certain! (So where are my 73/74 diaries then?).
What
a lucky find that was, as the programme contains the history
of 'Galaxy Enterprises' Ltd and a résumé for
each of the artist's/band on the show. I will try and cut
out the crap and give you a brief ("Brief? - He must
be joking"'!) run down of each; some of you may find
it a little boring, non the less they're all part of New
Zealand's 'Showbiz' History. I'm sure that many of New Zealand's
professional magicians - apart from myself - e.g., Jon Zealando,
Peter
(Evans) & Margo and Burns Scandrett, would have worked
with some of them during the Seventies, as well. Here goes:
-
Craig
Scott: - he had his first hit, - "Star Crossed Lovers",
in 1970 and was also the popular winner of the Golden Disc
solo award in the same year, and only one year later, '72
- he took the most coveted trophy in New Zealand Show Business,
the ' Loxene Golden Disc Award' - proper. In 1972 he followed
his golden disc win with The 'Entertainer Of The Year' award,
which established him as the foremost entertainer in New
Zealand during that year. In 1974 his latest single, "Rock
and Roll", had been on hit parades around the country
for some considerable time and was one of his most successful
hits.
One
of his first nationwide tours was with the English international
recording star, Cilla Black, and later with Tony Christie,
another English recording star. His latest long-playing
record then, "The Best Of Craig Scott", featured
12 of his hits - this was the first time a New Zealand artist
had recorded this many hits on one record. He was also the
resident singer on TV's "Happen Inn" pop show
for many months and in '73, the NZBC (New Zealand Broadcasting
Corporation) paid tribute to Craig when they made a documentary
about his rise as a singer in a small club band in Dunedin
and through his successes on record, television and stage,
to his current top position (1974) on the entertainment
ladder, at that time.
Angela
Ayers: - from the early age of six years it was dancing
and singing schools for Angela, which along with normal
schoolwork, took up a great deal of her time. However, the
hard work paid off and she passed past exam after exam;
at seventeen she became one of the leading dancing teachers
in her home city of Palmerston North. For 10 years she entered
numerous talent quests with some success but it was not
until July 1972 that her big break came - she won a national
talent quest organised by an Auckland promoter and Sunday
newspaper. Since then (remember, all this relates to the
year of 1974) she has toured New Zealand several times with
such artists as - Maria Dallas, Johnny Devlin and Craig
Scott, and appeared on national television twice weekly
for 10 consecutive months, making her television appearance
longer than that of any other New Zealand artist. Her first
recording, "Humpy Dumpty", enjoyed considerable
success after being released not only in New Zealand but
also Australia, Great Britain, Canada, the United States
and Japan.
'The
Reflections': - sisters Elaine and Patricia Wairau, began
their career entertaining in the Hawkes Bay area before
moving to Wellington. Here, their talent was quickly recognised
and were featured guest artists for several top New Zealand
vocalists. They got their big break when they toured with
international recording star Roger Whittaker. They were
well received in all of the 27 shows held throughout the
country, and also toured New Zealand with the 'Country and
Western Stage Show' in 1973. They performed on many television
shows and had been resident on the extremely popular 'Happen
Inn' TV show at various times.
Brendan
Dugan: - was the winner of Television's popular 'New Faces'
talent quest in 1968. He began working with Lou Clauson,
of Lou and Simon fame - for two years after his 'New Faces'
win to gain experience. In July 1971, he began to pursue
a solo career. By 1974 he
had five long-playing records to his credit and had appeared
on such television shows as 'Happen Inn', 'Country Touch'
and 'Country Road' as well as many tours throughout New
Zealand.
'The
Amazing 'Orchanté': - "Who"? "Read
The Bloody Saga"!
Prentice:
- formed in Wellington in 1973, Prentice had already become
well established on the North Island working the N.Z. Breweries
hotel circuit and had also featured at nightclubs in Wellington
and Christchurch. The backing group for the 'Family Variety
Spectacular' '
74, the band also played at hotels in Nelson and Timaru
(This is the band who stayed with Veronica and I in Timaru).
The group members were: -
Peter
Leef: - lead vocals, was originally with the 'Sons and Lovers'
and ' Marmaduke', in Wellington; he had been entertaining
professionally for four years.
Peter
Matthews: - lead guitarist and backing vocals, played for
'Next Of Kin' in Auckland - became professional 1973.
John
Morris: - Organ, was with the old 'Creation' before it disbanded.
3½ yrs Professional.
John
Rarity: - nickname -'Tangles', drums, also ex - Creation,
also Professional, 3½ yrs.
Galaxy
Enterprises Ltd; Managing Director - J.E. Brooks. In the
one short year since its establishment (1973), this progressive
company had become firmly established on the South Island
entertainment scene. Beginning operations by providing localised
hotel entertainment in the Canterbury area of the South
Island, the company had staged several successful variety
shows, with both New Zealand and overseas artists. In 1973
the company toured Ten South Island centres with a variety
concert, which was well received by enthusiastic crowds.
They decided to stage a bigger and brighter show (The Family
Variety Spectacular ' 74), to visit not Ten but Twenty centres!
Galaxy
Enterprises was also arranging a Variety - Hypnotism Show
- to tour to every possible country centre in the South
Island. This promised to be a great hit with all age groups.
"Now I wonder just who they were arranging this show
with"? "Read The B.!"
This
has been rather more the lengthy than I intended but, for
the sake of completeness and from a historic point of view,
it couldn't be helped. Who knows, someone, someday, may
want to follow up on the information I have supplied.
