4. Jamie Salinas, The Part Time Pro On The Magic Word Podcast
-------------------------------------------
Message by Scott Wells, M.I.M.C. with Gold Star
Fewer
than 10% of those in our magic community are full time professionals
meaning that 100% of their income is derived exclusively
from magic. That means there are a lot out there who are
amateurs or, what Gene Anderson refers to a "Part Time
Professionals." This week we respond to a listener's
request for a podcast about what it means to be a part-time
pro, how to balance another full time job and a family along
with a magic job and perhaps how to transition into becoming
a full time pro. Jamie Salinas is our guest this week who
epitomizes the part time pro. As an I.T. executive during
the day and a devoted family man with other activities and
interest outside magic, Jamie still balances all of this
with performing nearly 200 shows a year plus inventing,
manufacturing, and marketing original effects. He is also
a videographer (host of the YouTube channel "The Art
of Magic"), magic dealer and creator.
You
can listen to this interesting episode wherever you get
your podcasts. But for more information, video links, read

5. Seven Up! - John Carey #90
-------------------------------------------
Message by John Carey (UK)
http://www.johncareymagic.co.uk/
Seven
up is an almost sleightless production of four of a kind
where it appears you do nothing. It actively involves two
spectators and has a very strong payoff for so little work.
Place the Seven of Diamonds back outwards inside your wallet.
Whenever
you want to get into this piece, manage one of the other
sevens to the top of the deck, another about halfway down
and the remaining seven in the lower half of the deck. This
is easy to get into in between effects.
"Do
you guys believe in lucky charms? I know people who carry
all manner of things around as a symbol of luck! Being a
magician, I have a lucky card. I keep it here inside my
wallet. That card won me a lot of money in a private house
game of Poker back in the day." Remove your wallet
as you make this introduction and table it.
"Now
they say that all good things come in threes, so let's get
you two guys to randomize the deck with me and see if luck
is all around us today!" Flip the deck face up and
spread off about a third of the deck and hand it to spectator
one for shuffling.
Then
spread off another third and hand that to your second helper
for mixing. Turn the remaining cards face down and run the
seven spot on top to the bottom with an overhand shuffle
and then casually run it back to the top of your packet
with another shuffle. Table your packet in front of you
and ask your spectators to put their shuffled packets down
too.
We
will now secretly manage a seven to the top of our spectators
packets under the guise of a ruse. "There are many
different tricks a magician can do with cards. He might
pick up a packet like this and spread them and have a card
chosen." Suiting actions to words, pick up your packet
and casually spread it in the hands, pause and then square
up and table the packet. "Another thing he might do
is remove a card as a prediction." By way of demonstration
pick up spectator ones packet and flip it face up. With
the faces tilted slightly towards you start spreading the
cards looking for the seven card in this packet. When you
sight it split the packet into two sections with this card
at the rear of the right hand spread.
The
left hand turns palm-down and thumbs off the face card of
its packet onto the table. Bring both hands together but
place the right hands cards below the left hand packet,
secretly shuttling the seven spot to the rear/top of the
packet. Flip the packet face down, pick up the tabled card
and push it back into the packet. "But we're not doing
that trick today!" Attitude is everything here as you
execute this open cull. Be calm and casual and it's very
deceptive.
"One
other impressive thing you might see a magician do is a
very impressive demonstration of incredible card memory.
He would simply pick up some cards and look at the faces
like this and then be able to memorize and call off the
cards perfectly. Unfortunately my memory is terrible so
I won't be attempting that today!"
As
you deliver the above, pick up the second spectators packet
and flip it face up. The presentation perfectly justifies
or rationalizes you spreading the cards as you talk about
card memory. Sight the seven spot in this packet as you
spread the cards and Hofzinser cull it to the rear of the
packet. Turn the packet face down and table it.
Let's
break off a moment and look at things. It appears we have
done nothing but talk about different things magicians might
do with cards. It's very casual and conversational and the
dirty work is perfectly covered with presentational smoke.
From an audience perspective the effect hasn't even started
and yet we are a mile ahead and our work is done.
"Let
me show you that lucky card in my wallet. It's the Seven
of Diamonds. Not the highest card, but I will never forget
the luck that card brought me on that cold, dark winters
night. In fact the number seven is synonymous with luck.
In fact seven is quite iconic. We have the seven wonders
of the world, the seven seas and so on. Let's see if luck
is shining on us tonight, and remember, you shuffled. Turn
over the top card of your packet revealing a seven. Then
have each of your spectators turn over the top card of their
packets, concluding with a remarkable coincidence.
Notes:
If
either of your spectators packets have a seven already on
the top or bottom of their packets you needn't do anything
in the way of manipulation. Just leave the card there and
table the packet face down. Bring the effect home as before,
obviously turning a packet face up to disclose a Seven if
need be.
So
you see, an effect with hardly any technical work. It's
all in the presentation and smoke you throw around the piece.
I'm proud of the construction and I sincerely hope you have
as much fun with it as I have.

6. Ongoing Adventures Of Romany! #20
--------------------------------------------
Message by Romany (UK)
Hello
from my Magic Cottage!
Who
or what inspires you to action?
The
magician to put a new spring in my magic step this week
is someone you might already know. Mark James is a 34 years
old charismatic British magician who I first met ten years
ago when we were both performing at an IBM convention with
Shaun Farquhar and Michael Finney.
Our
paths didn't cross again until he messaged me to say that
he had enjoyed reading my book and had even listened to
it again on Audible, (now that's a plug if ever I heard
one!) and invited me to join him on a live video broadcast
during lockdown.
Last
week he zoom lectured to my local magic club and then I
watched his two Penquin live lectures. In these, the obvious
thought put into each presentation and technique is impressive.
I've been fumbling about with 2 eggs in my hand for years
doing Silk to Egg, trying to avoid them 'talking' but Mark
has a much cleaner version. I loved his salt pour too and
have just bought the very simple and cheap props he uses,
I'm looking forward to creating a presentation for that.
Mark has used the time in lockdown to turn his large garden
shed into a professional podcast studio and yesterday interviewed
me for an episode of 'Talking Shtick' in which magicians
chat about magic and explain their choice of tricks in their
set list. So far you can listen to Tom Crosbie, Nick Diffatte,
Thom Peterson, Matt Marcy, Taylor Hughes, Arthur Trace,
Ken, Dyne, Jamie Raven, and Ben Hart. Mike Caveney is about
to record his. You can listen on Apple, Spotify and other
platforms, just google 'Talking Shtick'. I'll let you know
when my episode airs.
We
also recorded a separate podcast called 'Past Masters' in
which magicians choose a famous magician from the past and
discuss their set list from Max Holden's 'Programmes of
Magicians'. I chose Houdini. You can listen to this on;
https://www.patreon.com/markjamesmagician
We
spent four hours straight talking magic and now I'm motivated
to get cracking again.
Look
him up, he might inspire you too!
With
my best wishes to you,
Romany

7. 2020 Magic And Meaning Conference Goes Online!
-------------------------------------------
Message by Jeff McBride (US)
It
is my pleasure to announce that the Mystery School's annual
Homecoming event-the Magic and Meaning Conference-will be
happening this year, and it will be ONLINE.
As
the pandemic surged in recent weeks, it became clear to
the School's wisdom team that the Conference could not proceed
as an in-person event this October. This was true both for
health and safety reasons, but also because so many people
are reluctant to travel for the foreseeable future.
This is, of course, deeply disappointing: The Magic and
Meaning Conference has been our community's time to gather
together, re-connect, and re-charge our love of magic that
matters. And yet, throughout the pandemic, the Magic &
Mystery School has built upon its long experience with the
Zoom platform to design and deliver online programs, courses,
and seminars that have achieved very high quality. For example,
just last week, Jeff, Lance Burton, and I delivered two
full days of the Online Lance Burton Teen Seminar. There
were seventy-six teens, great teaching content, special
guests, lots of breaks, and outstanding engagement from
the teens. From every perspective, the program was a smash
success.
And so we are excited to pivot the 2020 Magic and Meaning
Conference into an online format. The Conference will be
held Saturday and Sunday, October 24-25, 2020, from 10:00am
to 4:15pm PACIFIC, each day.
We're pleased to announce our 30th Anniversary Special Guests:
Lance Burton & Jade-both of whom have confirmed they
will be with us for the virtual conference!
We
are planning to emulate the in-person conference by featuring
online versions of its most beloved events. For example,
there will be:
- 12 Presentations (P-E-P Talks) from attendees. See the
Call for Presentations here: https://www.magicalwisdom.com/about/call-for-presentations.
- Guests of Honor and their Presentations
- Ensemble Shows featuring members of the community
-
Small Group discussions (using the breakout room feature
of Zoom)
- Special Events, such as celebrating the 30th Anniversary
of the Magic & Mystery School, the Festival of Wands
(our archetypal magic tool of the year), and a Broken Wand
Ceremony.
One important benefit of shifting the 2020 Magic and Meaning
Conference to an online event, is that it now becomes accessible
to magicians from all over the world.
To help make it possible for people to sign up in these
challenging times, we have set the tuition for the conference
at $145.00. Also, since this is an online program, people
are eligible to apply for a need-based stipend that will
cover 50% of the tuition. To see if you qualify, go here:
https://www.magicalwisdom.com/scholarships.
We hope you will plan to join us for this incredible celebration
of the Magic & Mystery School's 30th Anniversary! Sign
up now at: https://shop.magicalwisdom.com/event/magic-meaning-2020-online
for an incredible weekend of magic and mystery with our
tribe!

9. The Orchante Saga - Beginnings
-------------------------------------
Written by the late Tommy Orchard (The Amazing Orchante)
More
Mishaps!
An
awful lot of years ago I went to at a party somewhere in
Auckland. As the night and my alcohol intake progressed,
my common sense and judgment became somewhat impaired, to
say the least. The relevance of my happy, self-induced 'brain
box' deficiency will become clear shortly. It turns out
that the party host was a butcher plying his trade at the
Westfield freezing works. Somebody mentioned to him that
I was a sword swallower to which he, with typical New Zealand
down-to-earth, straight to the point, bluntness said - "BULLSHIT!"
Rather appropriate I thought, considering where he worked.
Disappearing
for a moment he returned with a large black sheath. You
can see the same type sheath strapped around your butcher's
waist when you go to his shop, it's filled with the various
knives of his trade including a 'steel' for sharpening.
Anyhow, my party host reached into his holster and with
a flourish whipped out a gleaming, very sharp, very lethal
knife saying - " let's see you swallow this bugger"!
Instead of explaining to him that I couldn't swallow anything
with
razor-sharp edges as it would slice open the oesophagus
as you pushed it down (a needle sharp point is okay so long
as you don't pierce the lining of your stomach), I stupidly/drunkenly
said "don't you have anything bigger"!
Grinning
like a Cheshire cat he again reached into his 'bag of tricks'
and like a magician, produced an enormous steel, that was
far bigger and thicker than the one most have at home. From
a sword swallower's point of view, the size was not a problem
so I quite happily took it from him and pushed it down my
throat. He was gobsmacked! I on the other hand, was becoming
aware, through my alcoholic haze, that my throat wasn't
- didn't feel at all like it should. Rough would be a good
description. Then I started to pull it out. BLOODY HELL!
I had forgotten that although a butcher's steel doesn't
have sharp straight edges like a knife, it does have a sharp
raised edge that spirals from the top of the steel to the
very tip. I very slowly, gingerly, eased it up, revolving
the steel as I did so. It didn't help. I was raw for a bloody
month! Serves me right. I never did that again.
Another
incident happened (this also was many, many moons ago, during
the Christmas/New year beach resort circuit) after a show
at the Rotorua Sound Shell. At the conclusion of the concert
the various artists myself included headed off to a coffee
lounge for midnight snacks - the usual entertainers healthy
fare - toasted sandwiches, hamburgers, coffee of course
and any other junk that was on offer. We were all sitting
at various tables, minding our own business, when a small
group of people came into the coffee lounge. It became obvious
that they had been at the open - air concert when one of
them singled me out, loudly proclaimed to one of all that
I was a fake because - 'everybody knows that the swords
fold-up when you press the secret button'.
Well,
I wasn't about to take that sitting down so I stood up -
and headed for the counter. I had noticed earlier whilst
dishing out cream for my coffee that the spoon had quite
a long handle. Just the thing to prove a point! Holding
the bowl of the spoon with the tips of my fingers I flung
my head back and slowly pushed the handle down my throat
- no problem, it was like a small entree compared to the
22 inch sword that normally followed the same path. For
a moment all was well, the loudmouth sceptic, in stunned
disbelief, was silent while others ooohed and aaahed then,
it happened.
My
fingers holding the bowl of the spoon, which was covered
in cream, squeezed a little bit too tight with the result
that the spoon shot, with lightning speed, out of my fingers
like a pip! The handle finished up halfway down my oesophagus
and the bowl was lodged somewhere behind my Adams apple.
It took the best part of half-an-hour to get that spoon
out - forcing two fingers down my throat to get a grip on
the bowl. Bent over double, a large pool of blood was developing
on the floor as my fingernails ripped, tore and lacerated
the tender skin down my throat.
At
one point I just managed to get a grip on it when somebody
slapped me on the back, obviously thinking that it might
help to dislodge the spoon - it did, out of my fingers
and straight back down my throat again! The worst part about
it was trying to stay calm, so that I could breathe - it
wasn't easy. It took an awful lot of mental pain control
to carry on performing night after night, swallowing swords,
eating fire etc - thank God my sleight of hand magic act
worked to music, no patter. I never did that again, either!
It
is amazing what trials, tribulations and pain we go through,
for the sake of our art!
