2. FISM WCM Postponed Until July 2022
-------------------------------------------
Message by Joan Caesar (Canada)

Dear friends in magic, Due to the various events that affected our lives in relation to the coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19) including the fact that several of the continental qualifications could not take place in 2020, the organizers of the FISM WCM in Quebec along with FISM International, have made the decision to delay the FISM World Championship Until July 25 - 30, 2022 .

This decision was made:
·To allow the organizers to hold the FISM continental qualifications a year before FISM;

·Because we hope that the travel conditions will be optimal again at that time;

·Because we want all magicians to feel safe during their stay in Quebec City;

·Because we want to offer an event that meets the expectations of all participants;

We invite you to visit our website for further information. In addition, we are renegotiating the hotel rates. Some of them have already adjusted their offers and some are still checking the possibilities. If you have already booked your hotel, we recommend that you contact them directly to modify your dates.

We hope to welcome you in Quebec City in July 2022 and if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact us at info@fismquebec2021.com

We thank you for your understanding.

4. Marvyn Roy Has Had A Serious Stroke
-------------------------------------------
Poste on Facebook by Dale Hindman

Hi friends of Marvyn - We (Dale, Carol's son Larry, Larry's daughters, Mallory & Lindsey and Dale's daughters, Tiffany & Michelle) want to let you know, that 3 days ago, Marvyn had a serious stroke.

The Assisted Living community where he had been living the last year was able to transport him very quickly to a hospital with a prominent stroke facility in the Coachella Valley. He is still with us, able to talk and communicate, but there are other deficits caused by the stroke that require more care than what he was receiving. So, we are currently in process of moving him to a skilled nursing facility while we assess next steps.

Also, due to COVID-19 restrictions, visitation is very, very restricted to his care staff. If you'd like to convey messages - please feel free to post them here and Dale will make sure to relay them to him.

We are doing everything we can to keep him comfortable but are not pursuing curative treatments based on doctor's recommendation. Our focus now is on quality of life. We will continue to keep you all updated via this page. If you have additional questions - please feel free to message this page and Dale or his daughter Tiffany will respond.

For those of you with Marvyn's phone number at his previous location, please do not call because we are unable to access it. We know he feels all of your love from all over the world.

5. Ryan Kane On The Magic Word Podcast
-------------------------------------------
Message by Scott Wells, M.I.M.C. with Gold Star

We all seem to have enough tricks. We all seem to know enough secrets. We just need to know how to present them better. This week we visit with San Francisco street magician, Ryan Kane, who recently authored the book, "Out of Stock - A Magician's Guide to Writing Your Own Lines". The intent of the podcast is not to promote new products/books/DVDs unless there is something intrinsically valuable to the general community.

We have all relied on "stock" or "hackneyed" lines in our performances. It's easy to fall back on the "standards" that have been overused over the years by everyone. This week Ryan talks about his formula for identifying, eliminating and replacing those lines in your act. He also talks about working out his new lines on the street before he feels comfortable bringing them "inside" for corporate audiences. This is an important discussion that has impact not only today but for years to come.

You can listen to this episode wherever you get your podcasts. But for much more information, links to Marc DeSouza's contest and the Magicians' Relief Project, and more, then visit: https://www.themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/563-ryan-kane

And while you are on the website, be sure to sign up for the weekly podletter so you keep up to date on who is on from week to week plus suggestions from the archives and be the first to sign up for our irregular contests!

6. Magic Castle Revisited Part Three
-------------------------------------------
Message by Nick Lewin

Some nights at the Castle The Professor was joined in his corner by master magicians such as Bruce Cervon, Larry Jennings, Mike Skinner, or Tony Giorgio--it was truly a sight to behold as they traded their tricks. I loved to watch these mind-bending sessions.

Over the years Vernon became quite a fan of my comedy magic act, but could never quite understand my need to inject comedy into my sleight of hand work. My very favorite memories of Dai were the nights when I would drive him back to his little apartment, stopping at the local supermarket for a few groceries. Pushing a rickety shopping cart around the Hughes Market while a demonstrably inebriated Professor selected items for his refrigerator was an honor I remember fondly. Usually Vernon would take these opportunities to good naturedly assure me it wasn't too late to forsake the jokes and concentrate fully on my card work.

In the mid '70s the Castle was a demonstrably smaller space and contained just two show rooms: The Close-Up Gallery, and the Castle Cabaret. The Cabaret was a tiny theatre located in what had begun its life as the basement of the original building. It seated about 40 people in comfortable red velvet movie house chairs, and then another 15 or so people stood at the rear of the room. It was always referred to as the Big Room!

In my first week performing in the Castle Cabaret, sharing a bill with the delightfully enigmatic Kuda Bux, I had what remains to this day one of my headiest performing experiences. Prior to introducing the show, Don Lawton popped into my dressing room and with a twinkle in his eye casually informed me that Cary Grant was sitting with David Niven in the audience, and seated at the rear of the room were Ingrid Bergman and Goldie Hawn. Was I nervous? Oh yes…

After concluding a show in the Cabaret I would often make my way up to the Castle library to see what was happening there. There were two ways to navigate this particular journey; one was via the grand central staircase with its imposing grandfather clock. The clock was widely rumored to have stopped at the exact minute Jay Ose had shuffled off this mortal coil; actually I heard several names mentioned in this connection, but most frequently it was Mr. Ose.

However, generally my preferred route upstairs was a detour that involved a short cut through the kitchen that allowed me a brief sojourn in the little room that housed Prof. Dave Bourne. Bourne was the genial bearded ragtime pianist who brought Irma to life on most nights. Dave was a Kenny Rogers look alike and the kind of man who improved any day just by spending a few minutes in his company. I spent many happy hours in Dave's anonymous little hideaway eavesdropping on guests as they requested their favorite tunes.

Dave and I had become firm friends dating back to the period when he had accompanied the acts at Milt Larsen's Mayfair Music Hall in Santa Monica. One evening while performing at the Mayfair my Zombie Ball had dropped to the ground in mid routine, and Bourne had been deeply impressed with the nonchalant manner in which I continued the routine using just the gimmick. I'm not sure if the audience saw me sweat during the incident but they certainly heard plenty of laughter emanating from the orchestra pit.

7. Casino Time - John Carey #85

Casino time is a very simple mental effect using the very popular Sven pads made by Brett Barry. I use the small pocket edition for this effect so that I can have it on me ready to perform pretty much anywhere. For the following application, make up a pad that forces the number 25. In addition I have supplied you with the following video link which shows a ball landing on 25 on a roulette wheel.

https://youtu.be/wNm4uYMu9i0

Save this on your mobile phone in your favorites or wherever. Send this link as an SMS to your helper but ask them not to open it just yet. "Brett, numbers play an important role in all our lives. There's PIN numbers, door numbers and bank card numbers. The list is truly endless. Here's a little pocket book full of random numbers. There's 11,7,23,4 and so on. Please take the book and open up to a random page and in turn a random number. Got it? Get it? Good! Lock the thought of that number in your Mind. (The pad is put away)"

"Now imagine a night out with friends in London. You have a nice meal, see a show and then decide to pop into a Casino. After trying your luck at Poker and Blackjack you decide it's time to go home. But just as you're leaving you see a crowd around the Roulette table and wheel. You venture over and decide to have just one last gamble. Imagine placing a chip on that number that resides purely in your mind Brett.

Then further imagine the beautiful young lady working the table spins the wheel and throws
the white ball in. The numbers and ball are a blur until eventually the ball skips onto one number. But not any old number. Your number! Tell everyone here what number the ball landed on Brett? Twenty Five? But it truly could have been any number! Please open that message I sent you before we even started and play the video I sent you. Impossible!!!"

A highlight in our magic section is this presentation copy of a 1930 pulp on spirit mediums, inscribed from the author, Samri Frikell (pseudonym of Fulton Oursler), to fellow writer Julien Proskauer. 9. Ongoing Adventures Of Romany! #12

Message by Romany Romany (UK)

Hello from the monastery!

I'm here but not gardening this afternoon, well not until I've posted the introduction video on my YouTube.

I said at least two weeks ago that I intended to start a series of videos called Making Life Magical while in lockdown. Since then I've been extremely successful at NOT making one! But finally this morning, not wanting to admit to YOU that I failed to make the video AGAIN, I've done it.

I used every procrastination trick in the book. The final one this morning was shopping on-line for five litres of hand wash and a plastic funnel, despite having plenty of hand wash already!

I've made you a dedicated private clip that you can watch here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5pxKabbaNT4 and you can watch the public introduction called Making Life Magical here https://studio.youtube.com/video/CbWCIxpT_ZU I'd love to have your company for future adventures and who knows, I might even do some magic on film.

Now that that's done, I'm going to back to the monastery gardens to have a little celebratory dig.

With love
Romany

11. The Orchante Saga - Beginnings
-------------------------------------
Written by the late Tommy Orchard (The Amazing Orchante)

I can resist everything, except temptation - Oscar Wilde Here's how I 'saw ' it. After being 'caught out' in the bar by Sharon, 'red handed' as it were, I wasn't a very happy man, as you might
imagine. We'd had an almighty 'row' in the hotel office, which had also served as my dressing room, during which, according to Sharon, I had threatened to push my sword so far down my throat - it would come out of my - 'arse'! Well, at least it was original - it really is amazing what comes out of one's gob when in shirt (that's one R too many) street- without a shovel!

I had a show to do within the hour and I wasn't really up to 'facing the music', afterwards. In fact, I had developed a rather nasty streak of yellow, right down my spine! How do I get out of this one? During the sword swallowing, I just kind of, 'snapped'. Sally's description of what happened is basically right, what she didn't know was that it was a deliberate, desperate, and unintentionally dramatic, to say the least - way to get out of an awkward situation, for the time being.

Once the security lads had carried me into the office I decided to go the whole hog. I placed myself into a self-imposed hypnotic trance and, although I was 'sort of 'aware of what was going on around me, with self-hypnosis I was able to totally ignore it, even to the extent that I didn't realise that Sharon was also in the ambulance - in a terrible state of turmoil, obviously thinking that I had actually carried out my earlier threat, with the sword swallowing.

Sharon says that we arrived at the hospital around 11pm but the doctors wouldn't let her see me until 2:00am! On top of everything else, what really upset her, to put it mildly, was that all I could say to her was "what great publicity". What an absolute!!**!!!^**!!@??? total (unprintable) I was! I spend the entire night in hospital - the doctors had placed a drip feed into my arm - and I could hear them discussing whether or not to open me up to see if I had perforated my stomach or not!

This unintentional performance hit the New Zealand airwaves, big-time. Lou and Simon, New Zealand's top comedy duo of the time, were performing in Invercargill (the southernmost city of the South Island) that night - heard the news on the radio down there - they, and many other kiwi entertainers who had also heard the news, rang the hospital. Nationwide Publicity - all free!

Eight or 9 o'clock the next morning, I decided it was about time that I brought myself 'around' - and explained that it is possible to ' heal' one's self through the use of hypnotic and yoga techniques - I received some very strange looks and sideways glances. As I booked myself out of the hospital, the doctors expressed their disappointment - they were looking forward to 'opening me up' and operating - to discover just what sort of damage a sword - swallower could do to himself! They weren't fooling me - they just wanted some 'payback time' for pulling the wool over their eyes! I couldn't blame them really!

I count myself most fortunate indeed - I have two wonderful sons, both now in their thirties, with delightful children of their own, all beautiful girls, (not surprising really - they've inherited their
grandfather's ' good looks'-ha ha) they and their mother, my ex-wife Sharon, forgave my indiscretion years ago and, along with her husband John, the nicest fellow you could ever hope to meet, not only deign to talk to me, we're all great friends as well as - family! I have a wonderful wife, Veronica, who has faithfully stuck with me through thick and thin, good times and bad, for 30 years and for 99.999 per cent of that time, we have been together practically 24 hours-a-day!
Now, is that some sort of record? I love them all, dearly!

So, what became of- and just who was, the 'red headed'-ice berg! WHY, I Married Her, Of Course! She Was, Still Is, My Wife---Veronica!!!
