Message by Joan Caesar (Canada)

Brad Jacobs, Past President of the Society of American Magicians, and President of FISM North America, is very ill. He has done a great deal for the entire magic community during the past 70 years. It would be a nice gesture for those who know him to send him a card. I know from the past that he enjoys humorous cards most.

6. Larsen Family And The Magic Castle

Message by William Bowers(US)

A documentary on the Larsen family and the Magic Castle, "M for Magic," was scheduled to be debuted at the SXSW film festival which, unfortunately, was canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic. Below are links to two articles on this documentary, one by Alexis Spraic, who was an editor on the project, and the other, an interview with Neil Patrick Harris, previous president of the Magic Castle.

FYI, Erika Larsen contacted Harry regarding use of some of his still photos for the documentary and, according to the release we signed, Harry's name is to appear in the credits. I am also including a photo of Harry with Neil Patrick Harris and Milt Larsen.

8. Your Bill And Your Name! John Carey #84
-------------------------------------------
Message by John Carey (UK)
http://www.johncareymagic.co.uk/

The classic borrowed object to impossible location is a plot that continues to fascinate magicians. What I offer here is an extremely practical signed bill/banknote in matchbox routine. You will need three matchboxes. Glue or double stick tape a folded £5 or whatever currency you use bill to the inside of one of the matchboxes and drop just a few matches on top. The other two matchboxes each have a few matches inside them also. The matchbox with the bill inside is marked with a sharpie dot on both sides for easy later identification. You also need a purse with just a small amount of pocket change inside. Place that inside your right jacket pocket.

Bring out the three matchboxes and table them. Ask to borrow a £5 note and then have it signed with a sharpie. Fold the note up into eighths and display in the right hand. "If anything should go wrong here I have some collateral!" As you say this execute a fake transfer of the signed note
into your left hand. The right hand enters the jacket pocket, ditches the note and comes out with the small purse and shakes it. Table this purse. Focus attention on the closed left hand and then slowly open it to reveal their note has vanished.

"I told you not to worry as inside the purse is my collateral!" This is a strong moment because the vanish is a complete one and you are subtly leading your audience to expect the signed note to appear inside the purse. Ask your helper to open the purse and tell everyone what they see inside? They will respond that there's just a few coins. Look perplexed and close the purse and put it away in your right pocket, secretly finger palming their signed note in the process. "I guess I will have to go to the A.T.M machine with you in a moment! But before we do, let's try a little game with these three matchboxes."

Ask your helper to mix them around on the table. Then sight the dotted matchbox and use a standard equivoque of one object from three to force the marked matchbox on your helper. Pick up each of the remaining matchboxes and push them open, showing just matches. Put these boxes aside. Then pick up the matchbox your spectator decided on and push the drawer all the way out into your left hand. Table the sleeve. Look amazed as you display a folded banknote and a few matches inside. Then tip out the contents into your right hand, the loose matches coalescing with the finger palmed banknote in your right hand- a Scotty York idea. Ask your spectator to unfold the banknote and reveal their signature! Simple, powerful and practical...

10. Ongoing Adventures Of Romany! #11
--------------------------------------------
Message by Romany Romany (UK)

Hello, not from the monastery, but from my cottage, a twenty minutes' walk away!

YES! I've been allowed out!

Members of the Buddhist community where I've been locked down are now allowed beyond the gates for exercise. We're not allowed to go to town or visit shops so that we can continue to shield the vulnerable members of the community.

On an ordinary Friday last week, an email announced our freedom. I spent the weekend in my new (but very old) cottage I've been paying for during lockdown but not allowed to visit. I went on long bike rides, swooping up and down deserted country lanes, stopping to admire quiet little villages and say hello to cute lambs in green fields. I turned the music up loud in my living room to celebrate that monks weren't meditating just next door.

This new freedom means that I am not obliged to work full time as a gardener any more. I can work in my cottage magic studio as much as I like. But when Monday came, all I wanted to do was to get back to work on the neglected garden I'm re-creating in the monastery. I worked hard all day and the same thing happened on Tuesday, I even worked overtime, stealthily digging up clumps of bright flowers from established gardens around the centre to bring colour back to the corner I'm working on, sowing grass seed and watering it every couple of hours.

Maybe I'm like those lab mice who don't leave the cage even the door is open. Maybe it's because in this new world, I'm not really sure what I should be doing.

Of course, my intention this week was to film an introduction for my YouTube channel. https://www.youtube.com/user/romanydivaofmagic I promised you I would and my deadline was today.

But then.

I got caught up in the news. I felt that witnessing the protests following the tragic George Floyd murder and listening to the voices of people of colour was / IS vitally important. I watched this talk by Robin DiAngelo author of 'White Fragility - Why it's so hard for white people to discuss racism'. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=45ey4jgoxeU and bought her book in audio form to listen to so I could educate myself.

I want to be part of the solution and not part of the problem by merely observing and staying silent. We are magicians, we work to create a better world. Turning a white silk into turquoise won't cut it right now.

I was glad to hear David Copperfield use his platform to make a supporting statement. I wondered how I could use my own voice and audience.

Now my deadline to film my YouTube intro has come and gone.

I'm not going to make that video. Or rather, not today. Hopefully I'll do it soon, no need to stress, no-one is chasing me with a big stick.

I think the time I've spent listening to people of colour speaking out this week has been well spent and much more important than anything else I had planned.

I would love us all to look closely at how we can welcome more diversity into our magic world, or simply into our everyday life, how WE can make a change. This IS a magical world, with every person precious and special.

We have the power to make it better.

With love to you all.

Romany

13. The Orchante Saga - Beginnings
-------------------------------------
Written by the late Tommy Orchard (The Amazing Orchante)

Anything good in life is either illegal, immoral or fattening!

I couldn't believe it! Never in all the years, before or since, during the untold thousands of times in which I have produced my thimble, have I received such a 'violent' reaction - I was, gobsmacked - well, quite literally, I was! Muttering apologies for what, I really didn't know, I snuck off to my room and waited for the management, police, fire brigade, SAS, riot squad, army and ambulance to come hammering on my door. They didn't, of course!

The hotel lounge room was packed for the first night show; it went down a storm! Assisting me was my girl - friend, Sally Phillips (now Metzger). Please note the hyphen. Perhaps I had better explain. Sally is my friend - my buddy, has been for the best part of 30 years - she is also most
definitely a lady, all woman, and a beautiful one at that! I trust that clears the air, we don't want any nasty rumours starting up now, do we! In actual fact, back in the Sixties, Sally occasionally worked as an 'emergency' assistant for one or two other artists/magicians when the need arose and, she kept each one's trade secrets - a lady to be trusted and very professional to boot! Luv ya Sal!

After the stage show I cleaned up - showered, then headed for the private bar where I spent the rest of the evening, performing - 'the show after the show' - close-up magic at the bar, until two or three in the morning. This was my custom, night after night and word soon got around. Unofficial guests starting to find their way in and the hotel staff were also there for the fun, except a certain redhead (with a great right hand) - who would perch herself on a bar-stool, with a girlfriend beside her, at the other end of the bar, as far away from me as she possibly could, while I was, 'creating magical miracles' - oh, the insult!!! Every time I caught her eye, 'icy
daggers' flew in my direction. Once, I went up to her to try and clear the air but to no avail - I was told, in no uncertain terms that I was, has far she was concerned, "rude, crude and totally unattractive".

One night, about 20 or 30 businessmen, who were staying in the hotel, had crammed themselves into the private bar (they were from all over New Zealand, and were in Auckland for some sort of convention.) They had seen the show in the main lounge and somebody had told them about my 'magic session' that followed later. Somehow, the subject of hypnotism came up and before you knew it, I was presenting a fully-fledged hypnotic 'stage show' in the bar!!!

With several of the businessmen as my willing subjects, I set up a gangster scenario, convinced one that he was - Al Capone and that the rest were all members of his gang. From there on I didn't have to do much, they all interacted with each other with ' Al Capone' setting up a plan to rob a bank and giving various members of his 'gang' jobs to do - in between grabbing some body by the front of their shirt and demanding that they clean his spats! It was a hoot! Turns out that my 'Al Capone' was actually a jeweller who came from a small town - Morrinsville or Te Aroha- somewhere like that. (There's a follow- up about him - I'll tell you later) Eventually, at 2 am, the bar manager had to close the bar.

One of the businessmen suggested that we transfer the entire 'party' to his suite and carry on, which we did. At this juncture I must explain that where hypnotism shows are concerned, I am dead against using blue or filthy material - public shows should be clean wholesome fun for the whole family, end of story! Sure, I like my dirty jokes and blue movies as much as the next guy, but that is private, not public. Yes, it's OK to have a bit of fun with a close personal friend whom you have 'put under' hypnosis, but never at their personal expense, monetary or otherwise! (I've wanted to say that for some months now, after certain untrue comments were made about me, see page 9 of SAGA)

Anyhow, the suite was packed with very happy and very inebriated, myself included - males, and only males. The hypnotic Show continued. Now, it was private. I've suggested to one of the subjects that the most beautiful blonde in the world was lying naked on the bed and as far as she was concerned, he was the only man on the world, for her. I'll leave the rest to your imagination. Suddenly, I became aware that the redhead, who didn't like thimbles, who thought I was rude crude and totally unattractive, had entered the room. I was so embarrassed - I put an immediate halt to the proceedings, went up to her and, practically on bended knees, begged her forgiveness - explaining that I had no idea there was a woman in the room, that what she had just witnessed, was the result of a bunch of very happily inebriated men, at an apparently all-male party, having an over-the-top good time - as we often do!

You wouldn't believe it, but whatever, however I said it, from out the blue all was forgiven - this red-headed 'iceberg' had melted somewhat, deciding that I wasn't, after all, quite so rude, crude and totally unattractive as she first thought! Miracles will never cease! She was going to the staff
room for a coffee so I invited myself to join her, made my excuses to the Business lads, and left the party. We had a good old chat where I discovered that not only was she the chief cashier for the hotel but also the head receptionist as well! I headed off to bed and collapsed. What a night!

The shows at the 'Marina' had been so successful I was rebooked for the following week and as the heading of Page 47 states, "things" happened! To everybody's astonishment, and particularly to the chagrin of most of the Milford Marina's male staff, this magician/fire-eater had turned on the heat, somehow managing to melt the 'untouchable' redheads heart - and to add insult to injury, " THE BASTARD WAS A MARRIED MAN"! Whispers and theories abounded - "he's hypnotised her, he's a real magician" etc. etc.

One night, the proverbial hit the fan. There are three accounts of what happened - Sharon's, (my ex-wife) Sally's and mine. According to Sharon, and she has more reason than anybody else to remember, I was sitting in the private bar having a quick drink with the 'redhead ' before the show when Sharon walked in, tapped me on the shoulder, and asked me for some drinking
money. She says that I nearly 'died' on the spot! The 'redhead', quite sensibly, made herself scarce.

What happened next is how Sally, a 'walking encyclopedia', who is also endowed with a great memory, remembers it. Sally was unaware of the incident in the bar before the show consequently, well, I'll let Sally tell it in her own words, quote "I'm assisting you on stage and you were just about to do the sword swallowing when I saw Sharon walk in.. not good.. so, you
swallowed the first short sword then, as you swallowed the big one, you quickly pulled the thing out and collapsed on the stage floor - much to the consternation of both the audience and your assistant - me!!! I bent over and said "Tom, are you o. k." to which you replied, "yeah, just get an ambulance".

A couple of burly security chaps came and carried you off the stage too many ooh's and aah's from the astonished audience who thought they had just witnessed you practically killing yourself. Anyway, we got you into the manager's office and an ambulance was duly called and away you went, to the hospital. The rest of the story of course you know yourself." Unquote.

Sally faxed me the above some time ago, and added "when I got off the phone last night I was killing myself laughing at the recollection of that night. It really was funny. I think you are right, it would make a good mention in the - SAGA". It sure as hell wasn't funny at the time!

Continues next episode!
