2. Do You Read Genii Magazine Every Month?

Message by Richard Kaufman - Editor of Genii

Why not?

It would make you happy. For only $35 you get access to tens of thousands of pages of Genii and MAGIC magazines at www.geniimagazine.com

On a trip to Las Vegas a few summers ago I saw David Goldrake's show Illusionarium at the Tropicana. We'd met just a day or two earlier; he invited me and it was excellent. Bursting with ideas; more than could be accommodated in its modest production. Davis is a swell guy, a sweet guy who really cares about every aspect of his shows. The hotels and casinos on the Vegas strip were just starting to fully recover from the last recession when the mass shooting, and then the novel coronavirus, decimated business. Getting a show remounted in these times will be difficult, but I believe David Goldrake is the guy who can make it happen. Chloe Olewitz drags the man from Luxembourg out of his shell.

A clever sleight flows from the fingers of David Britland in this month's "Cardopolis".

Jim Steinmeyer stays one ahead of the folks waiting to win big money in "Conjuring".

A potpourri from David Kaye in "Expert at the Kids' Table".

Jon Racherbaumer excavates and examines an old favorite in "Exhumations".

In this month's "Chamber of Secrets" John Gaughan displays one of the strangest tricks I've ever seen.

Jeff Prace takes his final bow in "Left-Handed".

Roberto Mansilla makes three jumbo cards fly in "Artifices".

Do you like your audiences? Helge Thun likes this month.

Chloe Olewitz brings us virus-tainted news in "The Eye".

Libby Ward brings us a pandemic special in "Knights at The Magic Castle".

Books, Tricks, and Videos are reviewed by David Britland, Danny Orleans, and Joe M. Turner.

3. Chris Pilsworth On The Magic Word Podcast
-------------------------------------------
Message by Scott Wells, M.I.M.C. with Gold Star

From Ottawa, Canada, this week comes our conversation with a Canadian Conjurer, Chris Pilsworth, about his creativity, consulting and his…cactus?

Chris has created some pretty incredible ideas that are being used by some select professional magicians the world over. He also and consults for international television shows featuring large (and I mean HUGE) scale illusions. This week on The Magic Word Podcast, Chris talks about his creative process and gives us some peak into his brain as he develops extraordinary ideas.

You can listen to this week's episode wherever you get your podcasts in the world. But for more content, including a video of his "Cactus in Balloon" effect, then visit: https://www.themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/561-chris-pilsworth

This week we are in the middle of our ten week program for magicians in need. The Magicians' Relief Project has now helped five magicians and five magic shops with five more of each to go in this drive. If you are in a position to financially assist a magician who could use some "magical relief", then contact Scott Wells at scott@themagicwordpodcast.com And be sure to sign up for our weekly pod-letter to get more information about current and upcoming episodes. Plus be the first to know about giveaways in our irregular contests. More information on the website.

5. They Call This Monte?!!- John Carey #83

A three card Monte or Find-the-Lady demonstration and routine is always commercial and a crowd pleaser, as you talk about this scam and how it's been played for generations on the streets of London and in New York City. The routine offered here takes a big diversion from the classic theme and has an added layer of impossibility to it and even more importantly makes a spectator the star. Ahead of time take a red sharpie marker and dot the centre white dot of the back of a red back Queen of Hearts. Naturally the rest of the deck is red too.

Hand the deck out to a lady for shuffling as you make your opening monologue about the classic game of three card Monte, find the lady, or as you call it, lose your money! Ask the spectator to remove the Queen of Hearts and sign it on the face. This card is then tabled face up. " This game originally started out as a 50/50 proposition game." Remove any spot card from the deck and table it face up next to the Queen.

Turn both cards face down and mix them around slowly a few times as you ask your helper to track the money card. Have her point to the card she believes is the Queen and then turn it face up to show she has good observation. Repeat the above once more, again your spectator winning. "Eventually as the years went but they added an extra card to the game." Remove another spot card and table it face up next to the other two cards. Turn them face down and mix them around and once more ask your spectator to find the lady. She succeeds again as you comment that she
should take up this game for a living!

"I'm glad we're not playing for money Jenny. Let's make this game a whole lot more difficult and at the same time even harder to win!" Take out seven more spot cards from the deck and deal them face up into various locations on the table. Put the rest of the deck away in your pocket. "Now let's play Ten Card Monte!" Turn the tabled cards face down and execute a wash shuffle, both hands chaotically mixing the face down cards around on the table. Then ask your helper to give the cards a wash shuffle too, ensuring that everything is totally fair.

"Your task Jenny, is to find the lady! I will be totally honest with you. I have no clue where she is. But you've already done so well today so focus on those cards on the table and use your intuition." As you say this, separate the cards on the table so that none overlap. Use this moment to visually locate the position of the marked Queen. Ask your helper to make her decision based purely on her intuition and freely point to any one of the ten cards. If she points to the marked card, happy days! Turn each of the other cards face up one at a time, pausing a couple of times for suspense along the way and finally reveal the signed card.

However, most of the time of course this won't happen. But it doesn't matter as you will now see! So they've pointed to one of the face down spot cards. Offer them the opportunity to change their minds if they wish. "So your mind is made up. You don't want this one, or that one?" As you say this pick up the marked card in your palm up left hand and any other card in your palm up right hand. "Let's isolate your choice and at the same time see if your powers of intuition are working."

We will now apply Brother John Hamman's beautiful sandwich switch from his routine called The Signed Card to secretly switch the money card into play. Both hands approach the card the spectator decided upon and scoop it up between the two cards you are holding, the left hand
'money' card going above, the indifferent card below. Push these cards square and then, with absolutely no hesitation, pull out the bottom card with your right hand, flip it face up and place it on top of the packet. Then pull out the new bottom card of the packet with your left hand and place that card underneath the packet and table the three some, one face down card isolated in between two face up cards. Your work is finished. Now it's just a matter of showcasing the finale.

"Well those two aren't the money card. So far, so good! But then neither is this one or that one or even that one there or here or there or indeed anywhere. Turn over the one you wanted! Never underestimate the power of a Woman's intuition!!!" As you deliver the above patter, start turning
cards face up, building up the pace to a crescendo and culminating on the last card standing being their signed card!

6. Ongoing Adventures Of Romany! #11
--------------------------------------------
Message by Romany Romany (UK)

Adventures of Romany
www.romanymagic.com

Hello from the monastery!

Week seven of lockdown.

I still haven't misbehaved badly enough to be thrown out!

Good news announced yesterday is that we are now allowed to walk off the grounds. We're not allowed to go to any shops or drive but at least we can walk on the beach here and out into the outside world.

This is a relief because, to be honest, last week I was going stir crazy, there's a limit to how much gardening work a magician can do and I'd certainly reached it. My thoughts were obsessing on what I'm going to do until we can do proper shows again which in the UK could be in 2021.

I wasn't coming up with any answers.

I know that many magicians have got their act together and created zoom shows and on-line magic with green screens etc, but personally when I think of doing that, my heart sinks. I wanted to do magic so that I could perform on stage with all the traditional experiences, maybe not the smell of the greasepaint any more but definitely with the thrill of standing in the magical spotlight, getting ready in dressing rooms, waiting in the wings, hearing the pre-show chatter of the audience, wondering how the show will go, even getting those terrible pre-show nerves.

You know, show business.

So yesterday I booked an hour with a life coach. Online of course. I explained how I was all set last February to combine becoming an international speaker combined with my stage show, talking on the subject of the Magical Power of Persistence, just as I had in Fiji.

"But now, there are no speaking events." I finished.
"Which is why you have to persist more than ever!" She said, "Now your audience is on-line, all those people whose dreams have also been cut short. 'You teach best what you need to learn.' You are going to take them along with you on your journey of persistence towards your dream, while encouraging them to do the same!"

Of course! Great advice!

Now my plan is to have a steep learning curve of creating vlog-like videos for YouTube and social media, following my renewed path towards the dream of performing and speaking and that book tour, of course.

I admit I'm feeling wobbly about whether I'll be up to it - I'm a bit of a technical numptie - but at least it's a plan!

I'll let you know when I post the introduction for the series and you'll know that I've got that far at least.

Maybe you'd like to come along with me for the ride?

I'll be posting adventures and insights and magic of course as soon as I get back to my magic studio in my cottage. If you would, and I'd REALLY welcome your support, you can subscribe at https://www.youtube.com/user/romanydivaofmagic

Until next week, love from the monastery.

9. The Orchante Saga - Beginnings
-------------------------------------
Written by the late Tommy Orchard (The Amazing Orchante)

"Things" happen!

The other night on television I was watching a factual/documentary style programme hosted by Michael Parkinson - his guest was the famous English comedian and television presenter, Jim Davidson. Jim is extremely successful - in the millionaire bracket - quite amazing really, considering that he's been through four marriages and all of the resultant alimony that he must have paid out. On top of that, he became an alcoholic, almost to the point of suicide!

The bottom line of this is, he is now completely reformed, but what really impressed me, was that he 'pulled no punches' - telling his story straight down the line, on live television, with complete honesty, no matter how bad, or big a bastard it made him look. I liked that - have much the same attitude myself. If segments of what I'm going to relate, with regards to my
outrageous, at best -mischievous behaviour, makes me also, look like a complete/**/&#*##*%/???-, then so be it!

Before I get started on what was to become and did have - a major impact not only in my life but also, that of two others - better make that four - I had better explain that, almost three months to the day, 15th of July 2001, my ex-wife Sharon and her husband John arrived here in the U.K. from New Zealand, on the first leg of an extended European holiday. Sharon and John came and stayed with Veronica and I for three days before heading off to Europe. It was the first time I'd seen Sharon in more than 17 years (in Sydney, Australia) - we had a great time, during which I asked Sharon for her permission for me to relate the following - happily, she gave it. Thank you Sharon.

Sometime late February (I think) of 1971 - I have been booked for a six-night engagement at the Milford Marina Hotel, which is situated on the North Shore of Auckland City, with accommodation provided, if required. At this point I am married, to Sharon. We have one son - Jason, who is two years of age, going on three - and another one almost on the way.

Although I lived just a few miles away from the 'Marina' I took advantage of the accommodation because I was only too well aware of the 'Marina's' private bar which, although mainly used by hotel guests and visitors - was also the favourite after-hours drinking hole/haunt for the off-duty staff and those in the 'know' - some of the 'sessions' could and often did, run into the wee small hours (although that depended on the barman/manager's mood and the type of company in the bar). Even back in those days, I was so sensible enough not to drink and drive - well, most of the time!

It was also a great spot to perform close-up magic! The only thing wrong was the exorbitant prices of the drinks, especially if you were into drinking 'shorts' or cocktails - you needed a wallet with a bottomless pit! Mind you, most of my drinks were paid for - one of the 'perks' of performing good magic!

Upon arriving at the hotel I waltzed up the front stairs to the reception desk where I was confronted by an extremely attractive, in fact, quite beautiful - Redhead. Now, I must digress for a moment. Always, in the right hand pocket of my trousers always, there is a thumb tip -also in the pocket I carry a thimble, which nestles quite nicely inside the tip. Over the years, that thimble has created more astonishment and introductions than I care to recall. It has 'popped ' out from the most extraordinary places - creating always, much amusement followed by such comments as "how did you do that - where did that come from, do it again".

As I signed the registry and explained than I was a magician and the guest artist for that week I couldn't help but notice that this 'vision' was wearing a frock with a modest bit of cleavage showing - that was enough for me. With a twinkle in my eye I said, "I see you like to sew" and in a flash produced the thimble from you know where. Always, I repeat, always - without exception, the reaction is - sheer amazement! "How dare you touch me - nobody touches me like that". Before I had time to say that I hadn't 'touched' her, this 'iceberg' had given me a smack, right across the kisser! Continues, next episode.
