2. Virtual Magic Performance With David Blaine

Message by Peter Rogers (UK)
Virtual
magic performance, and conversation with David Blaine. Be
ready to have a full interactive experience, and you might
even learn some tricks.
A
New Era Of Magic
"David
Blaine is the greatest magician who ever lived." -
Howard Stern. "Buried Alive," Blaine's first live
stunt, was a feat even Houdini was unable to do in his lifetime.
Blaine's stunts defy the boundaries of human endurance,
each one becoming more death-defying than the last. In addition
to the many millions who have seen him on television, Blaine
has also performed live for audiences of over 20,000 in
arenas around the world.
He
has performed intimately for every sitting American president
including Barack Obama, Bill Clinton and George W. Bush,
as well as a number of international leaders and prominent
figures such as Henry Kissinger, Michael Bloomberg, Stephen
Hawking, Muhammad Ali, among others. His TED talk became
one of Bill Gates' personal favorites, and is widely considered
the most revealing testimony Blaine has ever given on the
topic of his remarkable career.
This
experience can be enjoyed by one household (with preferably
participants over the age of 11) for a duration of 1 hour.
The
winning bidder must have a pack of cards.

3. Potter & Potter Auctions - Unprecedented Success
-------------------------------------------
Message by Rebekah Kaufman (US)
Potter
& Potter's May, 2020 Magic Sale an Unprecedented Success
at Over $500K and a 98% Sell Through Rate.
This
signature May auction featured props, personal effects,
and ephemera from beloved industry luminary Johnny Thompson
(American, 1934-2019) among other important and provenanced
magicana.
Chicago,
Il, May 5, 2020 - Potter and Potter's mid-spring event conjured
up both international attention as well as breathtaking
sales results. After a long day of spirited bidding, 95
lots realized between $1,000-3,999; 17 lots realized between
$4,000-$6,999; and 6 lots broke the $7,000 mark. Prices
noted include the company's 20% buyer's premium.
Materials
from magician Johnny Thompson, the Las Vegas illusionist
best known as The Great Tomsoni, stole the show and delivered
top shelf results.
Lot
#470, Thompson's engraved cups and balls used for his version
of the classic sleight-of-hand trick, was estimated at $2,000-4,000
and topped off at an astonishing $14,400. This set was illustrated
in The Magic of Johnny Thompson and was noteworthy as their
form was based on cups endorsed by his close friend, Charlie
Miller.
Lot
#468, Thompson's "Great Tomsoni" costume for his
Las Vegas magic act, made $6,000 on its $2,500-5,000 estimate.
This lot included a custom tailored jacket, a white dress
shirt, cummerbund, white bow tie, custom-tailored pants,
a satin ribbon/sash, patent leather boots, as well as a
number of top hats, props, and a large cloth suitcase.
Lot
#474, Thompson's maroon cloth egg bag illusion was estimated
at $500-750 and scrambled its way to $6,000. It was used
for his performance of the venerable egg bag effect, in
which an egg, placed in the bag, vanished and reappeared
repeatedly, even when the bag was in the hands of an audience
volunteer.
Lot
#480, Thompson's Mora Balls and net with mold realized $2,880
on its $200-400 estimate. These items were used for the
magician's signature version of this trick in which the
spheres traveled from one hand to the other, with a see-through
handkerchief held by two spectators being used as a table.
Lot
#585, a set of The Great Tomsoni and Company hand lettered
signs in uniform metal frames scored $1,920 - nearly ten
times their high estimate.
Important
broadsides and advertising posters from two centuries of
entertainers and troupes took several of the top slots in
this extraordinarily successful sale.
Lot
#363, a handsome, framed poster promoting Harry Kellar's
Latest Theosophic Wonder, sold for $7,200. It featured Kellar
in a scene from his performance of the Morritt Cage illusion.
Lot #365, a broadside for Maskelyne & Cooke's Marvellous
Entertainment from the Egyptian Hall, London, made $6,600.
This c. 1880 lithograph featured highlights from the troupe's
spooky show including spirit cabinet and table lifting effects,
a ghostly manifestation, and a dancing, decapitated skeleton.
Lot
#341, a c. 1920 broadside promoting The Great Carmo. The
Colossus of Mystery realized $5,760 on its $400-800 estimate.
This handsome bust portrait featured the circus impresario
and illusionist Harry Cameron (1881-1944) in a green turban,
with two prominent hoop earrings.
Lot
#196, a Professor Herrmann advertising flyer printed in
London and dated 1873 achieved $2,280 on its $250-350 estimate.
This piece promoted Herrmann's daily program at Egyptian
Hall, as well as Alexandre Osmann, the Celebrated African
Wizard.
This
sale's noteworthy selections of magic themed notebooks and
scrapbooks were also best sellers.
Lot
#311, an 1880s-era scrapbook of magic, ventriloquist, and
thought-reading materials, made its way to $5,280. This
collection was likely gathered by magician and ventriloquist
Sidney Oldridge, and included a variety of printed documents
related to variety entertainments in London in the late
Victorian era.
Lot
#246, a signed, c. 1908 notebook of secrets from Harry Houdini's
collection sold for $9,000 - three times its high estimate!
This personal diary was filled with notes, diagrams, and
descriptions of magic tricks and apparatus in two different
hands.
Lot
#185, Horace Goldin's trick/illusion idea notebook realized
$5,040 on its $800-1,200 estimate. Its author, stage magician
Hyman Elias Goldstein (American, 1873-1939), rose to international
stardom with his versions of the sawing a woman in half
illusion.
Outstanding
ephemera examples with ties to some of the most popular
magicians of the past two centuries also delivered eye-popping
results.
Lot
#224, an important Harry Houdini typed signed letter regarding
spiritualism sent to the editor of the British Journal of
Psychical Research delivered $7,200 on its $1,500-2,500
estimated. Dated June 24, 1924, this note addresses his
ongoing crusade against, and research into, the subject
of spiritualism.
Lot
#531, a Vincent Price signed "Les Sorcery" script
cover and related ephemera was estimated at $100-150 and
soared to $1,140. This lot included a framed script cover
page, inscribed: For John [Thompson] gratefully and affectionately/Vincent.;
a full copy of the same script; a promotional folder and
a program for the stage version; 13 color Kodak snapshots;
and "Les Sorcery" spoof coloring book.
Lot
#537, a photograph of Dai Vernon, inscribed and signed to
Johnny Thompson, beat its high estimate five times over,
realizing $6,000. It was signed, To 'Tomsoni'/a very wonderful
friend and a truly superlative artist with a beautiful assistant
'Pam'/with admiration/Dai Vernon/March 25th 1989.
Century
spanning magic books, souvenirs and awards, and personal
effects closed the loop on this memorable event.
Lot
#154, Chung Ling Soo's c. 1915 only known wig with an attached
braided pigtail was estimated at $3,000-6,000 and landed
at $10,200. This fully provenanced rarity consisted of a
flesh colored cloth skullcap with an attached human hair
ponytail braid measuring nearly a yard long.
Lot
#446, one of 50 presentation copies of the deluxe first
edition of Teller and Todd Karr's House of Mystery: The
Magic Science of David P. Abbott was estimated at $500-700
made $5,760. This two volume set was published by The Miracle
Factory of Los Angeles in 2005. This particular copy was
presented to Johnny and Pam Thompson and signed by Teller,
Todd Karr, and Katlyn Breene, with an additional personal
inscription by Teller.
Lot
#332, a Magic Circle commemorative cast brass magic mirror,
produced in England in 2005 by David G. Burder, traded hands
at $1,560 - almost eight times its low estimate. It was
one of fifty issued for the centenary of the Magic Circle
and was decorated with zodiac symbols surrounding a magic
lantern at its center.

6. Homage to Al Koran - John Carey #80
-------------------------------------------
Message by John Carey (UK)
http://www.johncareymagic.co.uk/
As
a young man going each week to the magic shop, I got to
see amazing things regularly as I was just starting out.
I will never forget the time the demonstrator fooled the
hell out of me with one particular card effect. I asked
him if I could buy that miracle I had just witnessed? He
said it was one of many tricks in a book by Al Koran called
Professional Presentations. I didn't have enough money that
day to buy it but saved for many weeks until I could finally
acquire it.
This
book was chock-full of gold! I dived into it and studied
firstly the trick that had so badly fooled me. It was simply
brilliant and so devious. I used it, as written, for many
years, until recently I began to tinker with the presentation.
There is nothing new, method-wise here. In fact the script
will tell you what you need to do! But road tests have proven
extremely positive. Here's my framework and script. I sincerely
hope you enjoy it.
"Peter,
today we are going to attempt to work in sync and read each
other's minds. Some call it mind-reading, others telepathy,
and skeptics state it simply can't be done. Firstly I will
shuffle this deck of cards. Would you now shuffle it too?
Perfect. Now please cut off around half the deck for you,
leaving about half for me. I'm going to lift away some cards
and look at the next card and put that thought into my mind.
Would you lift away some cards too please? Now take a peek
at your next card and lock that image in your mind too.
Now assemble your half as I assemble mine and let's each
shuffle our packets.
I
will place my cards in front of you. Would you place yours
in front of me? Now I would like you to attempt to send
me your thoughts. Firstly the colour. It's red yes? Now
the suit. I'm seeing a heart is that right? We seem to be
working well together! Finally send me the value of your
card. Right I will make a commitment and take out what I'm
getting from you. I will place it on the table for a moment.
Now
it's your turn to receive thoughts! Firstly I will send
you my colour. What did you receive? That's great it is
a black card! Now for the suit. What did you get? Right
again! It is a Club. I will lastly send you the value of
my card. Now don't say a word. Just take out what you sense
and place it face down next to my card. So it appears we
have had a high level of success. But now the acid test.
What card did you select? Turn my card over. That's it!
But these people are going to go crazy if you read my mind.
My card is the Seven of Clubs. Please turn your card over.
Impossible!!!"
Notes:
My presentation was inspired by a marketed effect of Eugene
Burgers called thought sender. Now go and grab yourself
a marked deck

Ongoing Adventures Of Romany! #8
--------------------------------------------
Message by Romany Romany (UK)
Adventures
of Romany
www.romanymagic.com
Hello
again!
I
confessed to you before that so far in lockdown I haven't
even touched my magic props. With no shows on the horizon
and cruise ships officially cancelled until 2021, I didn't
have my usual motivation.
Until
a monk called me over today and suggested that I film some
magic for their Spring and Summer festival coverage which
will be watched on-line by ten thousand Buddhists around
the world. A perfect opportunity to perform magic for people
who understand the concept of real magic! But more about
that next week.
This
week I have a story of superfast magic, manifestation in
minutes!
As
you know, I'm working as a volunteer in the gardens here
in a monastery and am left to my own devices and decisions.
Last week, I took out a whole bed of plants I didn't like,
leaving an empty bed which I felt a little guilty about.
I'm reading a book at the moment called Get Rich, Lucky
Bitch by Denise Duffield Thomas. It's probably not a book
the rest of the monastery are reading and like the monks
and nuns here, I have reservations about making Money your
main goal in life. However, I met the author Denise in Fiji
and since like most of you, my income has vanished, it's
to be a good time to read and put what it says into practice.
One
of the exercises was to think about what you would do if
you actually were rich. I thought I would buy £1000
of new plants and tools for the gardens. The next exercise
was to do something in the spirit of that, without actually
being a millionaire. I decided to donate £50 to buy
a fruit tree for the empty bed. That was in the morning
on Tuesday. Later that afternoon, a nun just happened to
mention to me that she had a few small fruit trees in tubs
that needed planting out.
As
I write, those same trees are enjoying their new freedom
and home in 'my' gardens. The fruit trees I imagined in
that position and then decided to buy, manifested without
me even having to put my hand in my pocket within the space
of a few hours. Magic, or co-incidence?
I'm choosing to believe the first. What we can imagine,
we can create. That's what we tell our audience as magicians.
I do at least!
Now
I'm going to put my thinking cap on to create something
a little bigger. Small steps.
I'll let you know what happens next week. If you were super
rich what would you do?
And now, think, what action in that same spirit can you
do right now?
If you like, write to me at romany@romanymagic.com and let
me know how your magical manifestation efforts go!
With
love from the gardens

9. The Orchante Saga - Beginnings
-------------------------------------
Written by the late Tommy Orchard (The Amazing Orchante)
Murphy's
Law - what can go wrong will go wrong, with a vengeance!
Calamity
- my diaries for the years 1973/74 have vanished, lost somewhere
within the swirling mists of time that pervades my bottomless
aluminium trunk. Therefore, although my memories of various
incidents during this time period are accurate the actual
dates and time lines cannot be verified.
At
one period during the years of 1972/73 I met David J. McKee,
who was based in Auckland. Dave managed a band called 'NOAZARK',
they had a hit record called 'Money's Made To Burn', which
was produced on Dave's own recording label - Kontact Recording
Co. Ltd. He also managed and recorded various vocalists
- among them, Brent Brody, Angela Ayers, Maria Dallas, and
Tom Sharplin. As an entrepreneur /promoter Dave organised
various shows mainly in hotels but also produced and presented
rock concerts in civic theatres and town halls around the
north island.
We
worked with David on many of these shows, both hotels and
concerts and in fact, I think David may have been one of
the first to combine a visual/speciality act with a rock
show - my rather naughty mime act was particularly successful!
He also toured my hypnotism show around the north of the
North Island of New Zealand - more of this later.
As
I explained at the beginning, the actual year/dates are
lost, however, during one late December there were two shows
that we will never forget. We had been booked for a private
function in Wanganui on a Saturday night and, for the Sunday
night Dave had booked us to perform our hypnotism show at
one of his rock concerts in Tauranga. The concert was to
be of three hours plus in length, starting at 7pm. The first
half, to run for approximately 90 minutes, was rock bands
and singers then a short interval followed by my hypnotism
show.
Veronica
and I decided that after the show in Wanganui (we figured
around midnight ) we would drive right through the night
to arrive in Tauranga early-morning, a seven or eight hour
journey and a distance of around 440miles. We could then
sleep all day and be nice and fresh for the show later that
night. That was the plan - HA, 'Murphy' and his bloody laws
had other ideas!
Wanganui
is on the Lower West coast of the north island of New Zealand
and the trip involved travelling up through the central
area to Taupo, on to Rotorua then across to the east coast
to reach Tauranga. The first 100 miles, Wanganui to Raetihi
was the worst part - a tortuous, narrow, winding twisting
road, all loose stone chippings with occasional passing
bays. On one side of the road there are hills/mountain's,
on the other, a drop of several hundred feet straight down
to the Mangawhero River - average driving speed is around
30/40 mph.
It
is a very desolate, rugged area. If you broke down, tough
- you just had to wait until another car came along to get
any kind of help - there were no mobile phones in those
days! It wouldn't surprise me if the road has since been
tar sealed and straightened out a bit - after all, I'm talking
about 30 odd years ago. We actually lived in Wanganui for
a short time and travelled on that road many times - you
sure heaved a sigh of relief when you got to the end of
it. The reason why I have tried to 'paint 'a reasonably
descriptive picture of this road/area is relevant to the
nightmare that was to befall us, and which will become clear
to you later on.
'Cold
Duck' this drink had just come onto the market in New Zealand
- it's a long time since I've drunk it but I seem to remember
it was a sort of 'bubbly, like champagne. They had cases
of the stuff at the show we did in Wanganui. Anyhow, our
'dressing room' for that night was a largish broom cupboard
that we just managed to squeeze into and all during the
evening somebody would stick his/her head into the cupboard
to say 'g'day' and pass in a bottle of this ' cold duck'-
the show was great and we became very, very happy! So, around
midnight as we had predicted, the show was over and we had
packed all our equipment into the car - the weather was
lousy the
rain was absolutely hissing down. (I'm sure that should
be spelt with a P). We had a long drive in front of us and
there was no way we could hear 'MURPHY' clapping his hands
and laughing with glee above the thunderclaps as we headed
off.
Next
episode - what the hell have we done to deserve this!
