4. The Magical Adventures Of Romany
--------------------------------------------
Message by Romany Romany (UK)

I feel like I am shouting "Hello!" through an old-school megaphone to you all over the world!

Hello! Hello! Helloooooo!

Can you feel this wonderful web of magic makers that Alan has assembled? I can. I'm so pleased to have the chance to meet you here and I hope soon in person.

I'm going to be jumping in occasionally to write about… well, I'm not sure yet. Magic definitely, the adventures of a travelling magician, maybe a look at magic life from the viewpoint of a pro female performer, tips and tricks for life, magic, magic, magic.

If you'd like to know more about me, the stuff I show the world is on www.romanymagic.com but in my column I'll give you the real insider adventures and what I promise you is honesty.

Last year, in response to so many people asking the same questions over and over, I published a memoir called Spun Into Gold - The Secret Life of a Female Magician. Half way through writing, I realised that if my story was going to help anyone, it would have to be the real story, not our wonderful magical razzle dazzle flimflam. So I wrote for my life. Everything. Letters back said that so many people have experienced similar stories. Telling our true story sets us free. Sharing our magic is a joy. I'm looking forward to sharing my life and magic with you.

Ask me a question, give me a theme to write on and hey presto, your wish will be answered. romany@romanymagic.com

Thank you Alan for working so hard to keep us all connected!

6. Jeff McBride Inducted Into The SAM Hall Of Fame

Message by Tobias Beckwith (US)

Las Vegas magic star Jeff McBride inducted into the Magic Hall of Fame

Las Vegas, January 24, 2020-The Society of American Magicians just wound up its annual convention at The Golden Nugget in Las Vegas, magic capital of the world. As part of the festivities, the S.A.M. inducted Las Vegas' own Jeff McBride along with McBride's late mentor, Eugene Burger. McBride joins a very small group of living magicians in the Hall of Fame, including David Copperfield and Siegfried & Roy.

Audience in Las Vegas have been delighting to McBride's performances since he first came here with Diana Ross, whose show was headlining at Caesars Palace more than 30 years ago. He came back repeatedly as an opening act for such other luminaries and Tom Jones, David Brenner and George Carlin…and then as one of the youngest headliners in Vegas history when he starred in the Moulin Rouge revue at the Las Vegas Hilton (now the Westgate). McBride moved to Las Vegas in 1998, when he became a regular headliner at Caesars Magical Empire. It was during the run there that he was named to the "Vegas Best" list, and the Las Vegas Review Journal described his act as "Light years ahead of the pack".

The S.A.M. honor is only the latest for McBride, whose work encompasses not only performing, but speaking and teaching around the world, as well. He is founder and leader of McBride's Magic & Mystery School, named by the BBC as the "world's most prestigious school for magicians".

The Society of American Magicians, founded on May 10, 1902, in Martinka's famous magic shop in New York City, New York, is the oldest and most prestigious magical society in the world. For over a century it has promoted the ideals shared by Kellar, Houdini, Thurston and more than 50,000 others world-wide who have held membership in the society. Those ideals include the elevation of the Art of Magic, the promotion of harmony among magicians, and the opposition of the unnecessary public exposure of magical effects.

The S.A.M. Hall of Fame and Magic Museum, Inc., is a non-profit educational corporation, founded in l967. The facility, located in Hollywood, California, features several attractions including tours, performances, lectures on the history of magic and a library. The museum illustrates the history of magic from ancient Egypt to the twentieth century. Life-size figures of magicians are displayed performing effects for which they became famous.

8. Card In Matchbox #101 - John Carey #69
-------------------------------------------
Message by John Carey (UK)
http://www.johncareymagic.co.uk/

The card in matchbox is a classic of card magic. There are many excellent methods in print that I have used at one time or another. Being a bit of a minimalist, I thought to myself how about performing a version that doesn't even use a deck of cards?! Fortunately the solution was staring at me in my home! I had recently acquired a Sven pad forcing pad from my great friend Peter Nardi at Alakazam Magic. I hadn't made up a force item with it yet but quickly grabbed a pen and got to work!

Take a pocket size Sven pad, available from many dealers and write the name of your force card - let's say it's Seven of Diamonds - on all the force pages of the pad. On all the non-force pages write random indifferent cards on each page. You will require two empty matchboxes. Take one of your business cards and on the blank side write "open the box!" Fold the business card up into a small package and place it inside the matchbox. Now take a Seven of Diamonds from a deck and fold that up and insert it into the other matchbox. Place the Sven pad into your left side pocket and the two matchboxes into your right side pocket, the 'business card' matchbox being furthest from the body.

"I was planning on showing you guys a card trick today but couldn't find a deck! Therefore I had to improvise." Bring the outermost matchbox from your right pocket and hand it to a spectator. Ask them to open up the box and remove the folded message inside. Ask them to place the message onto the table in front of them. Take back the matchbox with your right hand. "Somewhere here I have my improvised deck of cards!" Both hands enter the side pockets at the same time. The left hand takes out the pad as the right hand switches matchboxes and comes out just a beat behind the right hand.

Casually toss the matchbox onto the table. Display the names of various indifferent cards written on the non force pages of your pad by flicking each page downwards off the thumb. Hand the pad to your spectator and instruct them to simply open up the pad at a random position by pulling upwards with their thumb and remember the name of the card written down and put the thought of that card into their mind. Of course that card will be your force card, the Seven of Diamonds. Take back the pad and pocket it.

Now you are in a wonderful position. From your point of view the work is done. But the perception of the audience is that the effect hasn't barely started. Here is the way I like to stage the effect prior to the final revelation. "So Peter, right now you are merely thinking of a card. Earlier today I thought of a card too prior to coming here. My card is red. What colour
is yours? Red too? Just a coincidence. My card is a Diamond. And yours? A Diamond? That's spooky! My card is a seven. How about yours? Now that's amazing! But would you like to see something that goes beyond spooky, surpasses amazing and borders on the impossible? Please open the message you took out of the box earlier and read it out." So they unfold the business card and read out the message open the box! Ask them to pick up the matchbox, open it and discover a folded playing card inside. The card is unfolded to reveal the Seven of Diamonds and the mystery is complete.

12. Magicol No. 195 Coming Soon
-------------------------------------

We are delighted to report that the next issue of Magicol, No. 195, is at the printers, and soon, will be in the post.

And what an issue it is. It starts off with a piece by Lance Rich, who takes a brief look at the history of American nightclubs, and then provides a wonderful profile about the woman who discovered stars - Merriel Abbott.

Next, David Ben brings us through his personal journey to figure out Downs' Masterpiece. His adventure follows a winding path with many memorable turns along the way - and, as it turns out, the solution only springs forth more questions.

We then meet Janet Dey, a fiber artist. Through a chance encounter with magic and magicians, she reveals, in this interview with David Ben, some of her interesting insights as an artist who adorns photographs of magicians of yesteryear with a distinctive treatment.

Ken Trombly gives us a peek at some of his more obscure acquisitions in the next article, which is based on a that talk he gave at the Magic Collectors Expo in Minneapolis in June 2019. It's amazing how he keeps finding treasures for us to behold.

But wait there's more!

Ever wonder how lithographic artists created the exquisite magic posters that we love? If you think about it, lithographic posters were "pulled" from a reversed image - meaning artists had to create their designs backward, including all lettering. Was there a trick to it? David Ben thinks so, and he reveals his discovery in his "Game-Changer" article.

We end the issue with two tours: the first is a whirlwind trip through Vienna as Steve Beam recaps the unbelievably jam-packed, four-day European Magic History Conference, which was held in August 2019. The second is a tour of the DeMoulin Museum in Greenville, Illinois, where new contributor, Tom Varner, walks us through what is also known as "The Goat Factory", - which has got to be one of the oddest collection of pranking contraptions for fraternity and lodge initiation ceremonies. Unique is an understatement.

13. The Orchante Saga - Beginnings
-------------------------------------
Written by the late Tommy Orchard (The Amazing Orchante)

Tex Morton
Plus The Great Orchante

Saturday 28th October 1967 - New Zealand Television producer Kevin Moore, has booked me to perform my Bed of Nails and Sword Swallowing acts for a Live T.V. show. At the studio, I had the pleasure and privilege to meet one of New Zealand's greatest showmen, the late Tex Morton, who was also on the show. Tex kindly loaned his weight by standing on me during my bed of nails routine. Tex was touring New Zealand at that time, playing to packed houses throughout, with his 'one man show'

Having a chat after the T.V. programme had finished, Tex, out of the blue, asked him if I'd join him as his guest artist, on the last leg of his nationwide tour - throughout the top end of New Zealand. I was proud to accept - but you could have knocked me over with a feather - the last
thing Tex needed, with all his talents, was another act on his show, but for some reason, he'd taken a 'shine' to me. Now, looking back, I personally think that he saw in me, a younger version of himself - not just an entertainer, but a showman with a 'down to earth', 'one of the boys, nothing snobby about me' attitude.

Before I go any further, here's a resume/history about Tex, which will be rather lengthy - trying to be brief just wouldn't do justice to one of New Zealand's - and Australia's - best loved entertainers.

Tex Morton was born in Nelson, New Zealand, as Robert William Lane. Early in life (because of his parents' disapproval of 'show business') he changed his name, to avoid displeasing them. His first touring show was as a Hypnotist, and Memory Expert, and he later gravitated to the legitimate Theatre, playing every part from light comedy to heavy drama.

His two hobbies were always Folk singing and the study of Hypnotism, and he became world famous as a recording artist around 1935, after recording many of the songs he had gathered in his travels. They sold by the millions. Nicknamed 'Tex' by his friends, he amazed everyone by
assembling the biggest circus and rodeo Australia has ever known, touring it successfully for 12 years, while simultaneously conducting his ABC (Australian Broadcasting Corporation) network shows. He went to the USA in 1949 to finish his studies, and became a lecturer at the Institute of Hypnotherapy in Los Angeles upon graduation in Psychology.

He later lectured at McGill University, Montreal, Canada, and was an honorary member of Students' Executive, at Sir George Williams' College. He then transferred to Toronto and taught many Medical practitioners and Dental Surgeons the use of Hypnotism in Therapy, specialising in the psychosomatic field. He was an Associate at the Canadian Institute of Hypnotherapy, having co-founded this institution in 1954.

His return to show business created a sensation - all records across the USA and Canada were smashed. He was unbelievably versatile. The Duluth (Minnesota) newspaper said, after seeing his show 'The greatest display of versatility since Leonardo da Vinci' He was probably the greatest 'one man show' in the world at that time, and was also a very fine monologist and raconteur, and made many recordings of his 'readings'. He was expert sharpshooter, and his spine-chilling shooting demonstrations have baffled experts the world over. Without keeping up any practice whatsoever, he was able to more than hold his own, with the finest in every country he visited - sometimes, even defeating their champions

I did say that this wasn't going to be brief. I'll forgive you if you start thinking 'this is the Tex Morton saga' - and I ain't finished yet!

Our tour together started on Monday 13th November 1967, in Kaitaia. I'll continue the Tex Morton/Orchante saga next episode - there are some amusing tales to told.

P.S. My long-lost friends of 30 years ago, Murray and Margaret Hobson, arrived with the biggest bottle of Jack Daniels I've ever seen - it was a wonderful, emotional meeting - catching up with years of 'what have you been up to, then' etc. etc. Murray used to help me out in the early 60s/70s with my shows, and was my 'best man' when I married my first wife, Sharon. There is a bunch of amusing/horror tales re the young Orchante from the early days, to come.
