2. FISM North American Championship Of Magic 2020
-------------------------------------------
Message by Joan Caesar (Canada)
The
FISM North American Championship of Magic along with The
Canadian Association of Magicians convention will be held
May 6-10, 2020 in Quebec City, Quebec, Canada.
A registration to this historic convention would make a
great Christmas present for the magician/s in your family.
And your family might want to join you.
Quebec
City is the only walled city in North America and has a
tremendous amount of history. It is as close to the feeling
of Europe as you'll find in North America. There are also
wonderful shops and restaurants to explore along their cobblestone
streets.
Judges
will choose the contestants (a maximum of 15) who will move
up to compete at FISM 2021 as well as the Canadian Champion.
All contestants for a FISM placement must be citizens of
North America. All videos must be sent by February 15th
in order to compete. To be eligible to compete for the Canadian
prizes in stage and close up, you must be a member of the
Canadian Association of Magicians.
For
more information and to register, go to www.FISMNA2020.com

7. One for you and One for me! - John Carey #68
-------------------------------------------
Message by John Carey (UK)

I've
published quite a few handlings of the classic do as I do
plot in my previous books. The following is probably the
easiest from a method point of view, but please don't underestimate
its power. You require two different coloured decks. Set
the Jack of Hearts twelfth from the top of each deck and
you are ready to roll.
Bring
out both cased decks and offer your helper the free choice
of either deck. Both of you remove your respective decks.
Ask your helper to shuffle their deck. You false shuffle
yours retaining the Jack of Hearts twelfth from the top.
"Lori,
numbers play an important role in all our lives. Let's both
think of a number, say between ten and twenty? Ok I'm thinking
of twelve. And you? Ah sixteen. Just a random number right?
Let's both deal and count cards to our numbers." So
you deal twelve face-down cards in a packet as your spectator
deals sixteen. Ask your helper to take a peek at the card
at your number and remember it. You then look at the top
card of his pile and ignore it! Both of you then gather
up your packets and add them to your decks and then shuffle
once more.
"So
each of us are just thinking of a card generated by numbers
merely thought of. Would you take out your card from your
deck as I take out my card from my deck? Now coincidence
is a funny old thing, but sometimes things go way beyond
mere coincidence and defy explanation. Let's turn our cards
over together right now. Impossible!!!" Both cards
are revealed to be a perfect match and everybody goes home
happy :-)

8. Jeff McBride's Wonderworld
-------------------------------------------
Message by Jeff McBride (US)
Wonderground
happens the 3rd Thursday of every month. Doors will open
at 7:30pm at The Olive, located at 3850 East Sunset Rd.,
Las Vegas, NV. There is a $20 admission at the door ($10
for Nevada residents).
The
Early Stage show begins at 8:00 pm. The Close Up show begins
at 9:00 pm. The Late Stage show begins promptly at 10 pm.
Please arrive at least 30 minutes prior to ensure seating
for the shows.
The
Wonderground was created as a place to bring the community
of magic and variety together for an extraordinary experience
in co-created art and play. The third Thursday of every
month artists, magicians, variety performers, dancers, painters,
musicians, multi-media artists and poets come together to
celebrate and create an experience.
Wonderground
is held at The Olive, a Mediterranean restaurant and hookah
lounge. The entire 4-hour experience is hosted by world
renowned magician Jeff McBride. The evening begins with
a stage show featuring magicians, comedians, and other variety
acts from around the world. Following this, a close-up show
begins where a group of 50 people can experience sleight-of-hand
magic in an intimate setting. For those who prefer to dine
and socialize, the New World Rhythmatism Dancers fill the
stage with inspired belly dancing.
Throughout
the night, the lounge is surrounded with live painters,
sculptors, and ambient performers. Everywhere you look,
art abounds. At 10pm sharp, the late stage show begins featuring
world class magicians, jugglers, dancers, fire eaters, and
poets, with different performers each month. After a final
bow from all of the Wonderground players, the patrons mingle
with performers and network with industry aficionados.

9. The Orchante Saga - Beginnings
-------------------------------------
Written by the late Tommy Orchard (The Amazing Orchante)
Alan
Horobin, The Fabulous Franquin, And The Great Tex Morton
I'm
going to start off with an amendment, and some pertinent
facts about New Zealand. On the previous page (P.30) I made
a mistake in stating that Ken Ward spent some time on Nauru
Island (I even spelled it incorrectly - tut tut!) He was,
in fact, on Honiara Island, in the British Solomon Islands
- I got Jon Z mixed up with Ken.
Alan
Horobin - there is a wonderful incident I must relate, which
I forgot about, until now. Alan was working with his chimps
on the roof theatrette of either George Courts, Farmers,
or Rendalls - can't remember which, during the school holidays.
I may have been working with him - can't remember that,
either; but I was there, the day a rather large, blowsy
woman with a tribe of kids behind her, finally got up to
Alan (who was selling the tickets). She started berating
him about the length of the queue, as if it was Alan's fault,
disregarding the fact that she and her entourage made a
queue all of their own, and then, started on him about the
tickets, which were all one price - I seem to remember one
dollar.
'How dare you', she screamed, 'make these poor kids pay
the same as the adults!'
Alan,
with years of practiced ease, said 'Madam - madam, calm
down. You've got it all wrong. The adults ONLY have to pay
the same as the kids!'
For
what seemed like an hour, she stood there, blank-faced,
and then gradually, some semblance of intelligence spread
over her face, as the import of what Alan had said, hit
her. 'Well, that's all right then', she said 'I'll take
15 tickets'. To be kind, I like to think that those kids
weren't all hers, and that she'd had a rather hard, trying
day with 'the tribe'.
New
Zealand for the size and population of the country, has
produced an amazing array of talent and skills from all
walks of life e.g. Sir Ernest Rutherford, who first split
the atomic nucleus; Sir Edmund Hillary, who conquered Mount
Everest; Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, world famous
Opera singer; actress Nyree Dawn Porter, who died just last
month; actor Sam Neil - actually, he was born in England,
but like my wife Veronica, who is Scottish, was brought
up from an early age, in New Zealand. The list goes on and
on the writer, Ngaire Marsh; film producer Jane Campion
- on and on.
New
Zealand in area is just a little larger than Britain, including
Northern Ireland. The entire population of New Zealand (around
3.76 million), would fit into Sydney, Australia. The entire
population of Australia (around 18.5 million), would fit
into Greater London!! London is so terribly overcrowded,
(the entire country is) and is dreadfully polluted from
the horrendous traffic - (apart from Scotland). A good,
old-fashioned horse and cart from the last century, could
get across London City faster than you can today, driving
a car. Great place to visit as a Tourist, but who'd want
to live there? That's why New Zealand is called God's Own!
So having pissed off every magician in London - and probably
the whole of the UK - except for Scotland - (tough - facts
is facts) I'll get on with my saga.
Looking
through my old Diaries, I found a booking for ~AKTV2 (Auckland
Television Channel Two) studios. Producer Kevin Moore has
booked me to perform my Bed of nails, and Sword Swallowing
acts. Now, I'm going to have to digress for a moment.
Two
of the greatest showmen to hit the world stage, came from
New Zealand. The greatest, most successful in his craft,
and financially, was FRANQUIN (multi-millionaire). There
never has, never will be, another hypnotist to ever come
near him. In his day, he didn't do just one-nighters, or
a week or two in a theatre - it was several months, and
in some cases, 12 months or more - six nights a week.
Pat
Quinn, the great Franquin, was, is, one of those rare individuals
who when they walk into a crowded room, you know - you feel
their presence - Franquin's presence was awesome. Somehow,
you just knew that someone had contacted your psyche - spine
tingling, in the nicest
possible way, best describes it. I'll come back to Franquin,
(my personal hero) later.
The
other great showman to hit the world stage, was the Late
TEX MORTON, whom Kevin Moore had also booked for the T.V
show. CONTINUES NEXT EPISODE!
