2. Vanish Magazine Special Edition 2020
--------------------------------------------
Message by Paul Romhany - Editor Vanish Magazine
Here
is our first special edition for 2020.
Ben
Robinson attended Dangerfest in November and was able to
interview some of the best knife throwers in the world.
Knife throwing is an art form - much like magic - and there
are many things in this special edition that magicians can
reflect upon. Something very different offered to the magic
community and very proud to have this as our first special.
Visit:
www.vanishmagazine.com to get the special Dangerfest edition.

3. Free Convention Registration For Junior I.B.M. Members
--------------------------------------------
Pittsburgh
July 8-11, 2020
The
I.B.M. is excited to announce that under the leadership
of our youngest elected President, Alex Zander, the convention
committee of Pittsburgh 2020 has decided to allow I.B.M.
Youth members the opportunity to register for our annual
convention for the low cost of NOTHING!
Yes,
you read that correctly. All youth members in good standing
will be able to register for FREE. That means you'll be
able to attend the convention, participate in events, lectures,
contests and see all the shows for absolutely no cost to
you.
There
are a few stipulations to this amazing deal though.
As
a youth member, you must be accompanied to the convention
by a parent or legal guardian and as such they must be registered
for the convention. The good news is the cost for registration
for a non-magician parent is considerably less than the
cost a magician would have to pay.
As
a free registrant to the convention, we will be calling
on you occasionally to help us with such things as backstage
helpers, set-up crews, line up maintenance and even assisting
some of our magical stars.
We
do have a limited number of these FREE registrations available
so you need to act quickly to ensure your spot at what is
certain to be one of the most epic magic events ever.

register for the I.B.M. Convention,

A unique, possibly never-to-be-repeated very special two-day
seminar titled Shaman and Showman in Blackpool. The first
day is "The Healing Power of Magic," exploring
in detail the fascinating relationship between the shaman
and the magician, and how "magic is good medicine."
The second day is titled "The Meaning of Magic,"
which will focus on how to empower your magic by developing
more meaningful routines and scripts. With over £300s
worth of FREE merchandise and only 6 seats remaining, the
ticket price is just £65 per day, or £115 for
the weekend, which includes arrival drinks and a buffet
lunch. What an incredible value to spend two days with Jeff
and Larry. The dates are Saturday 28th and Sunday 29th March.

6. Pocket Money - John Carey #67

Adapting
a card plot to coins usually isn't such a smart idea, although
there are one or two notable exceptions. Pocket Money is
my spin on Dai Vernon's classic Travellers routine, but
with coins. You will require four identical silver coins,
a marker and a sheet of small stickers.
Take out the props and hand out a coin and a sticker to
each person.
Have
them each apply a sticker to their coin and initial it.
Set the sheet of stickers and the marker down on the table
and take back the coins into the palm up right hand. Toss
the coins into the left hand which closes into a fist, but
retain the top coin of the stack with the right thumb and
finger palm that coin. This is the Al Baker steal. Casually
pick up the sheet of stickers and drop it into the right
side jacket pocket, ditching the signed coin in the process.
Pick
up the marker with the right hand and gently wave it over
your left fist. A moment later open that hand to reveal
a coin has vanished and allow the three coins to slide off
onto the table.
Table
the marker as you allow this first vanish to register. "Number
one was just for fun, but number two is all for you!"
As you say this pick up the coins in the palm up right hand
and repeat the Baker steal as you toss two coins into the
left hand, holding the other back with the right thumb.
Pick up the marker with the right hand and once again wave
it over the left hand. Open that hand to reveal just two
coins. Table the marker once more.
"Number
three is a mystery!" Take one of the two coins at the
fingertips of the right hand. We will now execute a simple,
but deceptive clink pass. Bring the right hand over the
palm up left hand and apparently toss its coin on top of
the left-hand coin. Really though, you allow the right-hand
coin to drop on top of the coin in finger palm and the left
hand closes into a fist and moves slightly away. Pick up
the marker and wave it over the left fist. A moment later
open that hand to reveal coin number three has vanished.
"It
can even work without the magic pen!" We will use a
beautiful vanish of Gary Kurtz, called the rebound pass
for the last coin. The palm-down right hand comes about
six inches over the coin in the palm-up left hand.
Two
actions take place: Your left hand makes an upwards tossing
action at the wrist, finger palming its coin. The right
hand makes a catching action at its fingertips. Timed correctly,
there is a lovely retention of vision. Lower the right hand
slightly and then flick an imaginary coin into the air with
the right thumb, your eyes following its flight.
"But
if we can make them vanish, we need to get them back. One
travelled to this pocket, another over here in that pocket,
one inside here and the last one all the way over here.
Now that's what they call pocket money!" As you deliver
this last part of the presentation, the right hand enters
the right trousers pocket and pushes one of the two finger-palmed
coins to the fingertips while inside. It comes out and drops
the coin to the table.
Then
the left hand enters the left-side pocket and brings its
palmed coin out on display. Drop that coin and then go to
the left inside jacket pocket with your right hand and bring
out coin number three from the finger palm. Allow that coin
to drop with the other two and make a palms up gesture with
clearly empty hands. A beat later the right hand enters
its side jacket pocket and removes the final signed coin
and the mystery is complete.

8. The Orchante Saga - Beginnings
-------------------------------------
Written by the late Tommy Orchard (The Amazing Orchante)
Friends,
Past and Present
ALAN
HOROBIN - The conclusion - and, I find a long lost Friend
In
1967, I did another tour/run with Alan and the two Peters
around the north of the North Island of New Zealand (I've
still got the original poster). In a small town (can't remember
which) on the tour I met a young man who had come out from
the audience to stand on top of me when I was doing my 'human
filling in a bed of nails sandwich' segment. After the show
he came and introduced himself, He was an amateur magician,
his name, Ken Ward.
Ken,
a typical New Zealander, had lived and worked all over the
place, spent some time on Naru Island where, among the other
things he learnt how to skin-dive. He finally settled down
in London England. In 1987 Ken turned up at a club near
his home, where we were performing. I had no hope of recognising
him, but he had an old photo from all those years ago which
showed him standing on top of me, when I was doing my aforementioned
nails bit (God, we both looked like kids). We became very
good friends, and Veronica and I would often park our rather
large
American Recreational Vehicle (Motor Home) outside his home,
and stay for a day or two, talking Magic, of course. Ken
was very well known on the London magic scene, and was also
a Magic dealer for some big names - Fantasio being one of
them. Sadly, Ken died about 2 years ago (another precious
memory, eh, Jon - and Burns)!
Getting
back to Alan Horobin, that North Island tour of New Zealand
was the last time we were to work together, as Alan became
very busy with a major project - built, and became part
owner and Manager of Marineland, which opened in 1968 and
is situated just north of Auckland City, at a holiday resort
called Orewa. We would all go up there to talk about the
good old days with Alan and his most beautiful and charming
wife Frances. Frances was born on Thursday Island, which
is in the Torres Strait off the North East Coast of Cape
York Peninsula, at the most
northern tip of Australia.
Occasionally,
when Alan would come down to Auckland City, he would give
me a phone-call from some pub where I would meet up with
him for a drink or two or three or - - -. Alan liked to
have a drink with his mates - don't we all! One night, Alan
phoned me from the 'Great Northern', (a very nice Hotel
of International standard, - I performed there often.)
"Tom, come on in for a drink"
"I can't do, Al, - you sound like you've had a 'couple',
already"
"I sure have, but come on in any way"
"Sorry Al. I'm really tied up at the moment"
"Well, I might just as well head back to Orewa, then!"
"Alan, do me a favour - book a room for the night,
and we'll see you tomorrow"
"Yeah, okay - - -", HE DIDN'T!!
About
a mile from Orewa, there is a narrow bridge -----!!! I am
holding in my hand, a cutting, with the heading; 'MARINELAND
MAN DIES IN ACCIDENT!', then a short story of his life followed
by Quote" Mr Horobin is survived by his wife, two sons
and a daughter. The funeral service will be held today at
Devonport. It was packed! Alan was only 46!. All these years,
I've had to live with the 'IF ONLY' I had gone to the Great
Northern that night ----- there's been an awful lot of'
'if onlys' in my life - in everybody's, I guess!
Alan
died 29th July, 1975 - Veronica's birthday - it was a very
sad day. Peter Taylor died in 1997 (of cancer) Rusty Greaves
also died in 1997 - that leaves 'Newbs' and myself - and
we're not too crash hot! I think I'll go and have some of
my 'magic' medicine, and a Jack Daniels.
Jon
Zealando sent me an e-mail last week, informing me that
he had met up with an old friend of mine, (from the last
century or so it seems) - Murray Hobson. Murray and I met
1963/64 in Waihi, when I was performing during the Christmas
season, for Johnny Carter, who promoted shows and dances
all around that area. Johnny owns Race horses these days,
as well as a Plumbing shop, exports sheepskins to Europe,
and God knows what else he's up to.
I
phoned Jon Z.for a chat, and we had a good laugh about how,
individually, we would go down from Auckland to Te Aroha/Waihi
for Johnny, do 3 shows in one night, and then drive back
to Auckland, because the bastard was too tight to provide
accommodation, and to add insult to injury, we got paid
peanuts - while Johnny became rich from his various promotions
- ain't that the way with Agents/promoters? Apparently Johnny
has some 'hard case' stories to relate about me - I've yet
to contact him. God, I'm desperately trying to get out of
the 60's era, but, there's more to come!
Anyhow,
my old mate, Murray Hobson, (who still lives, with his wife
Margaret, in Auckland, New Zealand), was working for Johnny
Carter in Waihi, or as Murray put it 'it was more like a
paid holiday'. We became great friends, and he would occasionally
assist me at various gigs, in
those wonderful, not quite, lost in the mists of time, days.
We even put a small tour together, with Murray, myself,
Rusty Greaves, and Val Proctor, a vocalist - (I've got the
original poster of that as well, from my aluminium trunk
which truly seems to be a bottomless pit.).
Jon
Z. sent me Murray's e-mail address, the consequence of which,
he and Margaret are flying over here to the UK in two week's
time, to visit. By the time I've drained his memory banks,
I should have reams of tales to relate for the Saga. It's
going to be one hell of a reunion after - what - 30 years?
Ye Gods! I'd better stock up - on hangover cures!
See
you next week!
