Message by Scott Wells, M.I.M.C. with Gold Star
This
week we begin the busy holiday season and the month of December
for parties and magic. On The Magic Word Podcast, we make
our annual visit with Murray Sawchuck, Celebrity Magician,
in Las Vegas who updates us on what has been going on with
the magic scene on the Strip and Downtown during this past
year.
He
also gives us some suggestions for non-magic tourist destinations
for other members of your family who might want to see something
other than a magic show or the inside of a casino. Murray
also tells us what has been working and what hasn't been
working for promoting his brand (and yours) in the social
media.
You
can watch some of Murray's videos, read the blog, see some
photos, listen to the podcast online and download the MP3
file at: https://www.themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/533-murray-sawchuck-2019
This
week we also welcome Tom Yates and Dan Raridan as the two
newest Friends of The Magic Word. Thank you guys for your

6. Magic & Medicine
-------------------------------------------
Message by Jay Fortune
In
2006 I was invited as a guest to perform at Magic &
Meaning in Las Vegas. The conference is one of, if not the,
leading conference globally to explore the connections between
the magician and the human condition. Another world-class
conference, also hosted in Las Vegas, is Magic & Medicine,
which explores how the healing power of the magician can
be utilised by medical practitioners.
Now,
after years of behind-the-scenes negotiations and the generosity
of friends, I'm excited to be bringing a flavour of both
of these events to the UK for the first time ever. Shaman
& Showman takes place on Saturday 28th & Sunday
29th March, 2020, in Blackpool (the Las Vegas of the UK!).
Hosts
Jeff McBride and Dr. Lawrence Hass discuss this unique conference
weekend for which tickets are now on sale. Tickets available
from £55 per day (Early Bird until 31.12.19), including
over £150s worth of free merchandise. Limited spaces.

Schindler
- Nina (Zuckerman). Our beloved Nina passed at age 84. She
was a lifelong Girl Scout and the first and only woman elected
President of the New York Chapter #1 of the Society of American
Magicians, a position held by Harry Houdini in 1917. Nina
was the perfect magician's assistant and got all the laughs
in her husband's comedy magic act.
Nina
loved to travel and was a voracious reader of mystery books.
Nina was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. In lieu
of a funeral there will be a celebration of her life. She
leaves husband George, and her children, Shari, Scott, Dee,
daughter-in-law Arlene and five grandchildren, Chelsea,
Daniel, Paige, Carly and Kobi, and a sister Lorette Zirker.

9. Simplex Standup Coins Through Table - John Carey #63
-------------------------------------------
Message by John Carey (UK)
https://carey-scene.com/jc-main
The
coins through the table is an all-time classic with so many
beautiful methods in print by Slydini, Vernon et al. I wanted
a simple, practical and direct version that I could do standing.
Grab three half dollars and let's have some fun!
Take
out three half dollars and place them into a row on the
table. "A little mystery with one, two, three pieces
of silver and a solid table top!" As you say this pick
up the first coin and execute a fake transfer into the left
hand which closes into a fist. The coin is retained in the
right-hand finger palm. Pick up the second coin between
the right thumb and first finger and execute a clink pass
as you partially open the left hand and allow this coin
to fall on top of the finger palmed coin and then let it
bounce off into the left hand which then closes. Pick up
the third coin and execute another clink pass, but this
time retain that coin with the other in the right-hand finger
palm.
"Allow
me to demonstrate an effect of solid through solid, one
coin at a time." Extend your right first finger in
a pointing action as you complete this sentence. The Ramsay
subtlety nicely conceals the two finger-palmed coins.
Bring
the palm-down left fist a few inches above the table top.
As you do this, work the coin inside that hand into a heel
clip position. The right hand descends below the table.
Knock the left fist sharply against the table and then raise
it. "That's one!" Push one of the two right-hand
coins
to the fingertips and bring it out from beneath the table
to display at the fingertips. Drop it to the table. Take
the right hand back below the table and pause.
Then
knock the left fist once again against the table top. "There's
number two." Bring the right hand out palm up with
the coin displayed at the base of the third and little fingers
in open finger-palm. Turn this hand palm down below the
left fist and retain this coin in finger-palm as you allow
the heel clipped coin to drop from the left fist to the
table. This of course is a simple Han Ping Chien.
"Two
down and one to go! Extend the right first finger in a pointing
action as you say this. Take the right hand below the table
one last time. To conclude the effect slam the left-hand
palm down onto the table, at the same time allowing the
right-hand coin to hit the underside of the table.
Slowly lift the left hand away and turn it palm up. Then
dramatically bring the right hand out from beneath the table
to reveal the final coin and complete the effect.

10. The Orchante Saga - Beginnings
-------------------------------------
Written by the late Tommy Orchard (The Amazing Orchante)
Memories
Recap
- I've met Peter Taylor, Auckland Juggler/Acrobat. We're
heading back to Auckland after a 'gig' - it's New Year's
Eve 1964/65, five minutes to midnight.
Door
opens, and there looms the large, solid form, of a New Zealand
farmer - 'Yeah - what you want?' I explained that we - Peter
and I - were professional entertainers, he, a juggler, me,
a magician - had just done a show at the Thames Memorial
Hall, and no, our car hadn't broken down, but could we bring
in the New Year with them? In return, we would royally entertain
them; how could he refuse - according to me, we were the
two biggest talents in New Zealand. Well, I believed it
myself, and had long given up blushing, years ago.
'Come
on in' he roared 'Hey', he tells his wife and kids 'We've
got a couple of blokes here who're going to put a show on
for us'
Peter
growls in my ear 'It's alright for you with your magic tricks
and stuff - what the Hell am I going to do?'
'Improvise'
I said.
After
the usual midnight drinks and the shaking of hands, Peter
and I, for one hour, put on 'the show' for our audience
of five - Mum, Dad, and three kids. Peter juggled anything
'juggleable' - fruit, eggs, etc. He balanced chairs, a table,
a broom, and performed some gymnastic feats,
using the chairs to balance on. In between his bits, I performed
Close-up magic, with sponge balls, thimbles, coins, etc.,
during which Peter ambled out to the car, and got three
swords - two were his, one was mine - actually Peter had
one sword, the other was a dagger.
The
sword was about 3 feet long, very heavy, and the point was
needle sharp. He gripped the dagger in his teeth, and placed
the sword, point to point on the dagger. With the sword
perfectly balanced, and from a standing position he gradually
lowered himself to the floor, until he was flat on his back.
He then gently pushed the blade so that the sword slowly
revolved on the tip of the dagger. The slightest slip or
misjudgement, and the heavy sword would have plunged straight
down and penetrated his throat. It was a most dangerous
and breath-holding feat. And what did I do with mine - why,
swallowed it, of course
I'll
bet, that that farmer, his wife, and their now adult kids,
recount the tale every New Year's Eve to their children
and grandchildren and friends, about that wonderful night
when two strangers, on the last minutes of 1964, appeared
at their door, and, then vanished into the stillness of
the night. Over the years, the telling of the yarn has probably
turned into some sort of folklore type legend.
Peter
and I became great friends - we would meet up in Auckland
City on Friday nights (if we weren't working), and stand
on the corner of Queen Street and Vulcan Lane (there was
also a small Pub a few yards away, which helped keep our
whistles wet), watching the passing parade of long legs,
and mini-skirts, go by. We figured that if we waited long
enough, the tops would get lower, the minis, shorter, and
eventually they would meet in the middle. Never happened,
which was a shame, as for the sake of modesty, I'd invented
a bikini which came straight from my wild, youthful imagination;
it was going to make me a fortune. I called it the 'Brewery
Bikini' - two bottle-tops and a cork - the de-luxe model
had convenient tassels, tastefully attached, to ease removal/extraction!
I didn't get rich!
The
Orchantê Saga is about my life, as a globe-trotting
New Zealand magician/entertainer - originally to inform
other New Zealand magicians what I've been up to, over the
last 30 years, and as Alan Watson succinctly put it, to
make aware to the younger magicians, of my contribution
to New Zealand magic, and my proud 'flag-waving'. It is
also turning, at times, into a brief history of New Zealand
'show biz' folk, and others, who were, and are, a part of
my life - so, more of Peter Taylor next week, with Sally
Phillips, Peter Newberry, and David Baylis.
