3. The Magic Word Podcast - Genii Convention Reports
--------------------------------------------
Message by Scott Wells, M.I.M.C. with Gold Star

Genii Convention Reports and John Ferrentino

This past week, an opportunity came up that allowed me the chance to attend the Genii Convention in Orlando, Florida. It was pretty much a last-minute thing that came up two days before the start of the event. So, everyone benefits because I posted daily updates from this sold-out convention. In case you missed any of the daily updates from the Genii Convention, here are the direct links:

Day One: https://www.themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/521-2019-genii-convention-day-one

Day Two: https://www.themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/522-2019-genii-convention-day-two

Day Three: https://www.themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/523-2019-genii-convention-day-three

Day Four: https://www.themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/524-2019-genii-convention-day-four

But this second week of our "Month of Boo" (following on the heels of last week's podcast with David Parr at: https://www.themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/520-david-parr) we continue with a conversation with John Ferrentino. John is best known as a successful comedian, but lately he has diverted into the macabre with his seances. This past summer at the I.B.M. convention, he lectured on his "dark magic" but we sat down for a lengthy chat about his comedy career, Woodstock, traveling with Crosby, Stills, and Nash for a decade, and of course, seances.

You can watch some videos, read the blog, see some photos, get some links, listen to the podcast online, and download the MP3 file at: https://www.themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/525-john-ferrentino And don't forget to enter the contest for a chance to win one of 12 PDF copies of Ian Keeble's Workshop Lecture Notes that he had available at the Genii convention. The entry form is on the bottom of the blog of episode #522 (Day Two Update from the Genii Convention).

Also, this week we welcome John Archer as the newest member of the Friends of The Magic Word Podcast. Thank you and welcome, John, for your financial support of this podcast. Please consider joining him with your donations or pledges to the podcast. Thanks.

The S.A.M. Presents The Mac King Roast / Discover Magic Presentation

It has been said that "what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas" but in January of 2020, the saying will be "What Happens in Vegas will Happen at the S.A.M. Convention".

January 2020 marks the 20th anniversary for the Mac King Show in Las Vegas. To celebrate, The Society of American Magicians is hosting a celebrity roast. You will want to be there when Amazing Johnathon, Chris Kenner, Clint Holmes, Derek Hughes, Earl Turner, Johnny Katz, Mike Hammer, Nick Diffatte, Piff the Magic Dragon, Stephen Bergatze and a few surprise guests pay tribute to Mac King.

This is going to be a completely sold out event. The Mac King Celebrity Roast and Banquet is an additional $100 per person. Space is currently reserved for S.A.M. members and conventioneers, but as we get closer, the banquet will be opened up to other guests and Las Vegas celebrities so you need to register for the Convention NOW and also register for the Banquet and Roast.

Although Mac King is known for his Daytime Family Friendly show. Mac King's Roast will most definitely not be as family friendly.

The SAM Convention Committee is mindful of this has worked with the Discover Magic team to offer an optional activity which will be presented at the same time. This option is guaranteed to be the "Ultimate Kid Friendly Experience". This fun and interactive option is guaranteed to be appropriate for kids and youth as well as the young person inside all of us.

This is going to be an incredible night…all part of an incredible convention. You know you're going - Register now to get good seats. Register at http://www.samconvention.com.

5. Burying The Aces - John Carey #56

Message by John Carey (UK)

Paul Gordon

This trick is an impromptu way of utilising various Gene Finnell ideas from his Free-Cut Principle booklet of 1967. This routine is based on a few ideas of my own from my 2003 booklet, Explorations. From the late J.C Wagner: "Jeez, Paul. This is going straight into my act!"

Whilst toying with the deck and openly removing the Aces, ensure the top four cards are value Eight or higher. Usually you'll find four cards together within the spread; in which case you merely cut them to top. If not, swiftly cull them to position. Let's assume, for this description only, that the top card is a Nine followed by a Ten, then a Jack and an Eight. (Crimp the corner of the Eight; the fourth-from-top card.) So, remove the Aces and lay them in a face-up row. For this description only, lay them in CHaSeD order from left to right. In reality, the order is not pivotal.

Hold the deck face-up in dealing grip. Now, because the top card is a Nine, push over eight cards (nine less one), flip them face-down and table beneath the AD. Okay, because the second from top card is a Ten, push over nine cards (ten less one), flip them face-down and table beneath the AS. Once more, because the third top card is a Jack, push over ten cards (eleven less one), flip them face-down and table beneath the AH. Finally, flip the inhand remainder face-down and table beneath the AC.

Patter about burying and losing the Aces. Aided by the corner crimp, cut off the top four cards (make it appear random) of the packet beneath the AC and hold in dealing grip. Ask the spectator to turn the AC face-down onto its pile. Ask him to cut some cards from the pile beneath the AH and drop onto the AC pile; thereby burying the AC. Then ask the spectator to turn the AH face-down onto its pile. Ask him to cut some cards from the pile beneath the AS and drop onto the AH pile, thereby burying the AH. Again, ask the spectator to turn the AS face-down onto its pile. Ask him to cut some cards from the pile beneath the AD and drop onto the AS pile; thereby burying the AS. Finally, ask him to turn the AD face-down and drop it on its pile. You then drop your inhand four-card packet onto the AD. Gather the four piles by going from right to left. i.e., AD pile onto AS pile. Combined onto the AH pile and then the combined three piles onto the AC pile. If you can, false cut the deck.

Reiterate the free cuts and the 'losing' of the Aces. It really does look that way, thanks to Gene Finnell. Now, deal the top four cards face-up into a left to right row. They'll be the Nine, Ten, Jack and Eight - apparently four random cards. Holding the deck face-down in dealing grip, say, "Let's see if these four cards can locate the Aces." Deal nine cards under the Nine, ten cards under the Ten, eleven cards under the Jack and eight cards under the Eight. Discard the inhand
remainder. To end, flip the packets face-up to reveal the Aces. Ta da!

11. The Orchante Saga - Beginnings
-------------------------------------
Written by the late Tommy Orchard (The Amazing Orchante)

Message from Tommy Orchard (The Amazing Orchante) (UK ex-pat Kiwi)

'So - You're A Fire-Eater! Name Your Poison!'

THE FUEL - back in the 'Dark Ages', fire-eaters used petrol, until they started turning a lovely shade of blue - from Lead poisoning. These days, most use Lighter fuel, and some mix up exotic combinations. Kerosene, which is very slow burning, makes for great fire-balls, but it
stinks.

Many years ago, I realized that blowing the biggest, longest fire-ball DID NOT mean you were a 'great' fire-eater - presentation and entertainment value rode high above all other factors.

The biggest complaint I've heard continuously, for years, from bookers the world over, is the terrible black smoke, stench, blackened ceilings, and soot that fire-eaters left behind in the venues - and on the customers. I resolved to find a fuel which was practically smokeless, and which did not stink out the venues. In Sydney Australia, I spent considerable time with the Chemists at the Shell Refinery discussing the problem - they mixed up all sorts of concoctions - finally came up with one they called, appropriately, 'Shellite', which worked very well - enabled me to perform in venues which wouldn't touch fire-eaters with barge poles.

When we immigrated to Britain in 1985, I could not find 'Shellite' in the country, so started the whole process over again at a big Refinery in Edinburgh, Scotland. They finally came up with a product called Petroleum Ether -- it was fantastic - far better than the Australian Shellite, but it was lethal, in more ways than one, as I was to find out ten years later. It was so volatile and had such a low boiling point that static - or a decent sneeze - could set it off! so it had to be transported in a special container. It was totally clean burning and odour free - burnt very brightly, and produced an extremely hot flame. The heat was unbelievable. It took some time, even with hypnosis to get used to it - and boy was it fast - deadly fast.

I used to blow fire-balls 20 feet plus, no problem, with the Shellite, but with this stuff - maybe 10 feet. If you tried to hold more in the mouth, to spray out, you just wouldn't get it out quick enough. Blowing multiple fire balls was totally out of the question. You couldn't just buy the stuff at a Hardware store - it was only available at chemical Laboratories - had to sign for it, as it is supposed to be for professional use only in Laboratories.

Over the ten years I used this stuff, I must have gone through countless gallons of it. 1995 - I've gone to a supplier, as I am running low, and the chemist says 'oh, by the way, you had better have these'. He gave me a large envelope on which was written in large red lettering IMPORTANT DOCUMENTS! AS REQUIRED BY LAW: - HEALTH AND SAFETY AT WORK ACT. The Chemicals (Hazard information and packing for supply) regulations 1994.
THIS ENVELOPE CONTAINS SAFETY DATA SHEETS FOR CHEMICALS SUPPLIED ON YOUR ORDER.

There were four A4 sheets - most of the information was way above my head, and intended for laboratory technicians. Here are the 'bits' relevant to me. 'Petroleum spirit 40 - 60 degrees C. Skin contact: wash skin thoroughly with water. OBTAIN MEDICAL ATTENTION Handle with gloves; high grade PVC Eye Protection; Goggles or face shield Other precautions; Plastic apron, sleeves, and boots. Flash Point -45 degrees C Explosion limits; Lower 1% Upper 8%

Toxicological information: After inhalation of vapours, Irritation symptoms in the respiratory tract. After ingestion: nausea. Risk of aspiration upon vomiting. Possible symptoms; pneumonia.
After absorption; headache, dizziness, agitation, spasms, unconsciousness. Cardiovascular failure, respiratory paralysis.

For those who may be interested, here is an excerpt from a letter written to my doctor by the Consultant Physician; Quote; 'I saw this interesting man in the clinic today, and spent some time discussing with him our clinical findings. Going back into the history - he certainly has variable symptoms, and his wife feels he has been breathless on exertion for about 7 years, but symptoms have obviously increased since. He has also inhaled significant fumes in his fire-swallowing activities. He is going to give me details of the fuel he has been using over the last 10 years. His transfer factor for carbon monoxide is very low at 25% and I am sure this is explained by significant emphysema.' Unquote.

I CURSE THE DAY I STARTED USING THE PETROLEUM SPIRIT - IT HAS COST ME MY LIVELIHOOD AND MY LIFE. However, I've still got my sense of humour - a little sick at times - okay, very. I'm still breathing, with Nebulised drugs - oxygen tanks will come next, and after that, well, we all have to go sometime. Self-hypnosis and a positive attitude keeps depression at bay 99% of the time. I've got a loving wife, and 'me mate, Martin' helps keep me happily insane with our own brand of medicine, and a lot of folks around the world seem to enjoy my misadventures via Alan's e-zine. Thank you, All.. NOW - WHO WANTS TO BE A
FIRE-EATER?

NEXT WEEK - 'Beds of Nails? Ooooh - OUCH!'
