More Women Making Magic, In A Field Once Dominated by Men | Sunday TODAY

Men have dominated in the world of magic while women were often the assistants. In this week's Sunday Closer, NBC's Joe Fryer meets Jen Kramer, one of the women breaking barriers and becoming the role model she didn't have.

4. $72,000, Paid for Magician's Costume
-------------------------------------------

Record! Cardini's Stage-worn Tux Sold for $72,000, a Record for Any Magician's Costume.

What you see: A tuxedo outfit worn on stage by Cardini, including spats, bow tie, vest, white dress shirt, pocket handkerchief, fake flower, and top hat.

It sold at Potter & Potter in April 2013 for $72,000 (with premium), a world auction record for a magician's costume at auction.

Who was Cardini? Born Richard Valentine Pitchford in 1895 in Swansea, England, he was a magician who patterned his stage name after Harry Houdini. He practiced card tricks in the trenches while serving in World War I, and the harsh conditions forced him to master the sleights with his gloves on. After the war he traveled the world performing his magic act and ultimately rose to the top of his profession. His wife, Swan Walker, joined him onstage as his assistant. Pitchford died in 1973 at the age of 77.

The expert: Gabe Fajuri, president of Potter & Potter.

How often do you receive stage-worn costumes from any prominent magician, period? We have not had many. Cardini wore many tuxedos over his life. We've never had anything Houdini wore before, except for a straitjacket. We sold a Harry Blackstone Sr. tuxedo last year for a lot of money ($45,600 with buyer's premium). They're not like magic books or tricks, which we get on a daily basis.

How many tuxedos would Cardini have traveled with? He had to have had more than one, yes? He had at least two. He'd need to have fresh clothes because he'd do multiple shows a day. He came up in vaudeville, doing five to seven shows a day at its peak. Then he transitioned to nightclubs and hotels. He was working.

Do you know when he would have worn and used this tuxedo? What span of time? We don't know, but I'd guess later. It came directly from his daughter, and she got it from her mother (Swan Walker, Cardini's wife and stage assistant).

Message by Scott Wells, M.I.M.C. with Gold Star

Texas Association of Magicians Convention on The Magic Word Podcast

San Antonio, Texas played host for the 74th annual Texas Association of Magicians convention this year. The Magic Word Podcast was there to bring you conversations with convention attendees, talent, organizers, and more. The purpose of these convention updates is both to preserve the history of magic conventions by talking about those who were there and also to help other convention organizers to hear and learn what activities went on and what made it special.

These reports are the next best thing to being there because whether or not you attended the convention, you hear a different aspect of the event and hear chats with some people whom you may not have had the chance (or may never have the chance) to hear talk in a social conversation.

This year was to have honored John Cornelius, who was a local magician but celebrated all around the world for his FISM winning creativity. Unfortunately, John passed earlier this year so the Guest of Honor was another celebrated local magician, Richard Turner. Also performing this year included Nick Lewin, James Dimmare, Joe Givan and Carol Massie, Scott Pepper, Oscar Munoz, David Deeble, Stuart MacDonald, Mahdi Gilbert, Chris Capehart, Paul Driscoll, David Charvet, and Lucio Martinez who combined to make this a memorable event despite the lower attendance of nearly 200 registrants.

You can view some photos, get the convention schedule, listen to the podcasts online or download the MP3 at:

Basic Effect

A boxed deck of cards is placed in front of the participant. She is asked to think
of any card. The performer asks her to change her mind a few times and then
before knowing the identity of the thought of card announces its exact position
in the pack.

Verity

The simplicity of this routine hides a complicated deception that combines
multiple paths to the same eventual end. There is no memorized stack involved, it
may be quickly set up on the fly with minimal effort, and is virtually sleight of hand
free. That said, the thought of card won't always be the card found at the named
position. In some, occasions it will simply be a match to that card.

Here lies part of the deception. Let's first examine the script that goes along with setting the
effect and asking the subject to both think of a card and change his or her mind
multiple times and the effects this has psychologically on what cards are thought
of most of the time.

10. 2020 Fool Us Auditions at The S.A.M. Convention, Las Vegas
------------------------------------
Message by Dal Sanders (US)

Think you have what it takes to fool Penn & Teller?

Come to the S.A.M. convention and showcase your act!

If you think you can fool Penn & Teller, then you can audition for the executive producers of Fool Us at the 2020 S.A.M. Convention in Las Vegas. The convention will be held January 18-21 at the Golden Nugget on Fremont Street. All acts selected to audition will receive notes from the executive producers of Fool Us.

The Fool Us executive producers will be on hand to give you constructive notes for what will make your act better for TV and specifically better for Penn & Teller: Fool Us. They are also prepared to offer invitations for the next season of Fool Us to acts they feel are a good fit. The auditions will be held at the Golden Nugget Showroom where Frank Sinatra used to perform. In between acts the executive producers will be interviewed by Fool Us writer, Matt Donnelly, exploring how the show is put together, what they look for, constraints they have and behind the scenes stories.

When applying, you'll be required to send a link to a video of your act. Do not worry if it is not of professional quality and setting. We will be accepting applicants based on that, just your routine. If accepted you'll be able to showcase your act to the producers in a beautiful Las Vegas showroom.

Some things to know if you are applying:
Applications will only be considered if the applicant is registered for the S.A.M. convention.
Applications submitted by October 1st will be notified by October 15th of their status (accepted/rejected/waitlisted).
Applications submitted after October 1st will be notified if and when space is available.
Acts should be less than 6 minutes.
The use of stooges is not permitted.
The use of preshow work is not allowed.
Fire and pyrotechnical devices of any kind cannot be used at the audition due to permitting restraints.

Audience members will enjoy what can only be called Fool Us Exposed. During the breaks between auditions, the TV show producers will reveal what goes on behind the scenes from selecting the acts to determining if Penn & Teller were actually fooled.

14. The Orchante Saga - Beginnings
-------------------------------------
Written by the late Tommy Orchard (The Amazing Orchante)

1959/60/61

The Early Sixties - Magic, sex, drugs and rock'n roll (drugs? - well, I smoked cigarettes, and liked a drink!) - the years just zipped by.

Sometime in 1959 - go to a private party; it was the usual 'Kiwi bash', booze and guitars, and people doing their party 'bits' - some sang, others told jokes, played guitar solos, and, a young magician 'did his thing'. Some bloke came into the lounge room, his face blacked up - eyes and mouth the most prominent features - white shirt, black bow tie and trousers - on his hands, white gloves. He carefully placed a 78 record on the old gramophone, turned the volume way up, dropped to his knees, and, he was AL JOLSON, singing 'Mammy'!

His timing and lip synchronization with the record, was perfection. You simply forgot that a record was playing. I was fascinated, what a great party piece - a stunner. For me, this was perfect - I couldn't sing or whistle in tune to save myself (have perfect pitch when listening to
others - can tell when a record or tape is playing even minutely fast or slow).

In the '60s some of my favourites were; singer Paul Anka, the comedian Stan Freberg, and Spike Jones and the City Slickers. Utilising some of their recordings, with the aid of my record player (I think every kid must have had one - they held 12, 45 rpm records or L.P.s, and dropped
them down one by one as each one was played) and a mirror, I soon had an act together. Must have got it right - the first time I 'performed' the mime act in public was at the 1960/61 Mt. Maunganui Sound Shell - Christmas/New Year shows, with the Howard Morrison Quartet. Here's part of the write-up from the local newspaper:

Quote - "last night 10,000 spectators attended 'The Mount' sound shell outdoor concert, the numbers no doubt boosted by the appearance of the fabulous HOWARD MORRISON QUARTET.

Also, on the programme was the young entertainer, ORCHANTE - who gave an astonishing demonstration of mass hypnotism, placing 100s of the audience to sleep, as well as the 50 or so crammed onto the stage! He also showed his skill as a magician with some adept sleight of hand tricks, and then proved himself as a singer of no mean ability. This talented young man who turned 17 just three months ago, is set to take the world by storm!" Unquote.

"A singer of no mean ability"? - now that upset Howard and the Quartet - as well as the other singers on the show - I'm not surprised! Strange how audiences (myself included) disregard the fact that there is no band/orchestra on stage, when watching a mime act (Later, I invested in a reel to reel tape recorder - saved the embarrassment caused either by the needle occasionally jumping on the record, or some 'wit' giving the, turn-table arm a 'gentle' nudge).

Always thought that I had originated miming (to records) as a full act, to the New Zealand public, but I recently discovered that it was in fact DON LINDEN, who started professionally around 1957/58. Apart from being a great Mime Artist, he had a 'wonderful' natural gimmick. When he opened his mouth, it was like looking down the Grand Canyon - you could damn near see his feet - it was truly an Indian Rubber gob!

A few years later another chap, STEVE STEVENSON arrived on the scene - he was the ultimate - fantastic sound system - everything recorded in STEREO - WOW!!, incredible sound effects - cars, planes etc., racing across the stage - what a mime act! Apparently, he had all his teeth pulled out because it enhanced his mouth movements for his mime act - now, that's dedication for you!!!

During the 70s, the majority of my work was in hotels. The show was in three segments - the first being the MAGIC - pure sleight of hand - the second was the FAKIR act, which consisted in sequence of fire eating - sword swallowing - bed of nails, and the famed 'PSYCHIC SURGERY. The third segment was the MIME ACT, which by then was a far cry from the
Mount. Maunganui Sound Shell days - it tended to be a little naughty! The Fakir act always got fantastic response, but it was the Mime act which blew the audiences away! Mind you, the Pub crowd was pretty well 'liquored up' by the third segment, so a 'slightly' naughty mime act was
just what the crowd was ready for.

I should mention, for non-New Zealanders, that Lounge Bars in New Zealand hotels, are large - most that we performed in held at least 500 people, some, 1,000 or more.

Another thing, most people thought that the Fakir and the Mime artist were two different people! I guess the outfits had a lot to do with it - the Fakir was dressed in turban and Ali Baba style pantaloons in royal blue - cummerbund and curly toed slippers in silver and 4" wide copper armbands, and bare-chested, like a genie. (Years later, while performing in Mexico, I had armbands custom-made in copper and silver - expensive, but beautiful). When you've spent years developing a 'class' act, everything must spell 'quality'. 'Shoddy' is not acceptable on the World Stage scene.

The 'Mime artist' was in a very slick, shimmery suit. 'TOMMY'S MILLION DOLLAR SUIT' is how my dear friend, TREVOR KING always described it. Trevor is, in Show Biz. Circles around the world, a much-loved New Zealander - Tour manager for just about every major imported
International show to come to New Zealand's shores - from Pop, to the Vienna Boys Choir.

I've done it again - 'time tunneled' into the future - I'll throw the Time Machine lever into reverse for next week.
