3. FISM North American Championship Of Magic 2020
------------------------------------
Message from Joan Caesar (Canada)

FISM North American Championship of Magic 2020: May 6-10, 2020 in Quebec City, Quebec, Canada

FISM North American Championship of Magic 2020 will be following the same categories of FISM WCM. The following is taken from the FISM website.

Stage Magic Performances:

Manipulation: A magic stage act wholly or largely based on sleight of hand.

General Magic: A magic stage act which is, in most cases, a mix of several of the other categories. Some performances using modern high-tech or video technology can also be categorized under this denomination.

Stage Illusions: A magic stage act in which huge props are used (even when these are not visible to the audience). Often several people and/or animals are involved.

Comedy Magic: A magic stage act of which the main purpose is to make people laugh. It can be based on any one of the aforementioned categories, provided the emphasis is laid on the magic nature of the performance.

Mental Magic: Branch of magic comprising demonstrations of apparent extraordinary or supernatural mental powers, such as telepathy, clairvoyance, precognition, telekinesis, super memory, lightning calculation and simulations of mediumistic phenomena.

Close-up Magic Performances:

Acts intended to be performed for small groups of people in close proximity. The contestant can be seated or standing behind a table, mostly with some members of the audience also seated at this table, but the act can also be presented standing up without any use of a table. The items used are generally small and most effects directly involve the spectators or participants. Three categories are distinguished:

Card Magic: The act is exclusively based on effects using playing cards.
Micro Magic: Although playing cards are not to be excluded, the act is of a more general nature.
Parlour Magic: An act, midway between close-up and stage magic, meant to be performed for a group of people in a moderately sized room.

Don't forget, the price for FISM North American Championship of Magic 2020 will increase the end of September. Register at www.fismna2020.com

4. Mark Randall and MAGIC Live! - The Magic Word Podcast
-------------------------------------------
Message by Scott Wells, M.I.M.C. with Gold Star

In the early days of August and the hot summer days of Las Vegas, 1,600 magicians came together from all over the world to meet, network, learn, buy new tricks, see shows, and in general have fun at the 11th annual MAGIC Live! convention. This year's event was a total success and will no doubt be sold out again next year. If you were unable to attend, or even if you did, then you will enjoy the daily convention updates posted on The Magic Word Podcast.

I understand that next year's dates have been set for August 2-5, 2020. Again, this will overlap with Abbott's Get Together which will be August 5-8, 2020. Sad that they cannot coordinate these between the two. They are both awesome conventions with a completely different vibe. But in these four updates, there are conversations with registrants, talent, organizers and more. Here are the links to each day:

Day One: https://www.themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/507-day-one-2019-magic-live
Day Two: https://www.themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/507-day-two-2019-magic-live
Day Three: https://www.themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/509-day-three-2019-magic-live
Day Four: https://www.themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/510-day-four-2019-magic-live

One of the keynote speakers at this year's MAGIC Live! was the former Chief Strategist and Vice President of Creativity for Adobe (who was responsible for the creation of Photoshop and PDF's). His short 20-minute talk focused on how we can innovate and create new magic tricks and a formula for doing so. Following his talk, he sat down in a quiet room to give us an uninterrupted hour of his time recapping and expanding on what he talked about in the General Session.

It is an inspirational conversation that is rife with great ideas on how we can move our art forward. You can listen and learn from our conversation on this week's podcast at: https://www.themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/511-mark-randall And don't forget to sign up to our Pod-Letter and learn about who is coming in future podcasts plus a suggestion on past episodes you may have overlooked. Plus, you will be the first to learn about our contests. In fact, we may be offering one next week. Sign up and find out.

5. Lance Pierce On The Magic Word Podcast
-------------------------------------------
Message by Scott Wells, M.I.M.C. with Gold Star

Over the years, Lance Pierce has befriended some pretty incredible legends in our industry including Roger Klause, John Cornelius and Michael Skinner. In fact, he is the author of "Roger Klause in Concert" and "The Award Winning Magic of John Cornelius" and the webmaster of The Magic Pebble online forum and the host and organizer of Pebblepalooza, an annual close-up convention in Dallas, Texas He recognizes that the work we are doing today is only because of what we building on, which is the work of the early masters in our art.

This week, Lance talks about first meeting and becoming friends with Roger, John and Michael. He also discusses the development of The Magic Pebble and the close-up convention that became an outgrowth of that forum. Lanced has much advice to share that he freely offers in this podcast.

You can find the videos, blog, photos and online podcast at: https://www.themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/506-lance-pierce Of course you can always find the episode however you and wherever you normally get your podcasts.

We also welcome two new Friends of The Magic Word: Stephanie Beach and Andy Turner. Thank you both for your financial support of the podcast. Your help keeps us going week after week. And speaking of next week, be sure to come back beginning Monday August 5 for daily updates from MAGIC Live! in Las Vegas, Nevada. You don't want to miss one episode of this exciting convention. Listening is the next best thing to being there. So, come along and join me. It's Vegas, baby!

Message by Scott Wells, M.I.M.C. with Gold Star

7. New Books For Young And Old On The Magic Word Podcast
-------------------------------------------
Message by Scott Wells, M.I.M.C. with Gold Star

For what seems like a brief period of time during the Desktop Publishing craze, magic books popped up nearly every week. Then as the digital age progressed and more magicians began publishing their methods through PDF's or video downloads, fewer hard cover books got published. Moreover, people in general don't seem to be as interested in learning magic through books as they (we) once did.

But there has been no slowdown in fiction as authors entertain readers with stories of intrigue and mystery. So are the offerings from the two guests on this week's episode of The Magic Word Podcast.

Greg Koren is a self-published author of books directed at young readers of middle school. This week he talks about his latest book, "The Memory Trap". The premise of the book is that the central character, Henry Dunne, is about to be suspended from his new middle school for something he didn't do, and the principal's old but beloved car is about to disappear for the last time.

Henry and the principal agree to help each other, but these unlikely friends don't realize the deck has been stacked against them, and time is running out. Henry must confront his fears and figure out whom to trust before the sinister force making their lives miserable steps from the shadows to deal the final, crushing blow. In helping to solve this mystery, Henry uses his knowledge of Tamariz's "Mnemonica" card stack for his "memory palace".

John Gaspard next talks about the newest book in the Eli Marks magic detective mystery novel series. In this sixth book of the series, "The Zombie Ball", Eli again uses his magical knowledge and sleight-of-hand skills to solve another mystery. The Zombie Ball is a former zombie pub crawl which has grown into an annual high-class social event.

What begins as a typical stage show for Eli turns deadly when two of the evening's sponsors are found murdered under truly unusual circumstances. Compounding this drama is the presence of Eli's ex-wife and her new husband, Homicide Detective Fred Hutton. Under pressure to solve the crime before the 800 guests depart, Eli and his detective nemesis go head-to-head to uncover the bizarre clues that will unravel this macabre mystery.

Then finally, John shares an exclusive with The Magic Word Podcast by providing the listeners with an audible version of his short story, "The Last Customer". Also, there is a contest for listeners to enter for a chance to win a digital copy of their books.

You can read the blog, see some photos of the authors, get links to their books, enter the contest, listen online and download the MP3 file at: https://www.themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/512-koren-and-gaspard

Effect
A no-fuss and direct handling for cards across.

Performance

Have three cards selected and controlled to the bottom. I like to have three cards touched one at a time (preferably by three different spectators). As each card is touched up-jog the selection and allow the spectator to memorize it. After the cards are memorized, I perform a Neal Elias multiple shift.

At this point act as if you had forgotten that you need ten cards separated from the deck. Ask a spectator to go ahead and deal ten cards from the top of the deck to the table.

Take the deck back and obtain a break above the three selections on the bottom of the deck and take them into left hand Gambler's cop position.

Ask your audience if there is anyone especially proficient at shuffling cards. Take the deck from above with the right hand and give it to the shuffling volunteer and allow your left hand to drop to your side.

Immediately when they begin to shuffle pick up the tabled cards, turn them faceup, and add them on top of the copped selections.

Turn to another spectator ask him to assist by checking the cards.

You have plenty of motivation to have the cards recounted and observed to make sure the selections are not there Hand the packet to the spectator and instruct them to count the cards one at time, turning them face-down and adding them to the bottom of the packet (the classic Paul Harris Las Vegas Leaper count). Instruct the spectators who made the selections to observe the cards in the packet.

This allows them to count each card individually and verify that the selections are not amongst them.

Instruct the spectator with the packet to hold it face-up between his palms. Take the deck back from the shuffler and ribbon spread it so that the faces are towards the audience.

"So, if your cards aren't in those 10 cards they must still be here, right?"

Nod in confirmation as you deliver this line. This will encourage the selectors to nod in agreement. They are really affirming a set of propositions and a conclusion based on those propositions, but the rest of the audience will interpret this as the spectators confirming that they can see their cards still in the deck.

What remains is to perform the magical transference. I leave this to your own preference. Whether you want to invisibly remove and toss cards one at a time or any other such ruse, it is all good.

"So, if I have done what I claimed to do and transferred three cards invisibly to your packet how many cards should you have now?"

"13." (They should say if their math is acceptable.)

Instruct the spectator holding the packet to count the cards out loud, face-up on to the table. Stop them when they reach 10. Ask them how many they have left.

The spectator will respond "three."

Remark, "10+ 3 makes..." they should respond 13. "But it wouldn't be a miracle unless those three cards are the selection."

Have each spectator who made a selection name their card one at a time. As the
cards are named instruct the spectator holding the cards to turn the relevant card around, revealing it to all.

For the first time ever to be in the southern United States, Magicpalooza presents the Great Southern Magic Collector & History Conference in Orlando, Florida, September 6-8.

The beautiful Holiday Inn Resort Orlando-Lake Buena Vista is the host hotel with a special Conference room rate of only $99. 16. The Orchante Saga - Beginnings
-------------------------------------
Written by the late Tommy Orchard (The Amazing Orchante)

Papakura/Manurewa 1959-1960
Looking back, I'm amazed how much I learned and perfected in those two years. I'd never forgotten 'The White Yoga' whom I saw at the Wairoa Carnival. I bought a book called 'Memoirs of a Sword Swallower', (pub. 1951). an autobiography by Dan Mannix, an American journalist who was given the assignment to 'expose' the tricks of the 'fake' carnival stunts, and discovered that they weren't tricks or fakes after all - i.e. that the sword swallowers blades don't fold up, etc.- and wound up becoming a performer himself.

This gave me the 'kick start' I needed, and I started by poking a finger down my throat, which resulted in the usual reaction - floor decoration! The idea is to persevere until the back of the tongue and throat gets used to the feel of a foreign object, but it was taking too long. How do I speed it up? "You silly bugger" I said, as a light bulb shone brightly over my head. Then I smacked myself right across the 'kisser' - I don't take that kind of talk from nobody! "Use Self-hypnosis, dummy!" Well, that stopped the gagging - now I needed something longer than my finger. Got hold of an old bayonet, cleaned it up, and started in earnest to get the blade down. No Way! My throat just clammed up - all I got for my troubles was a sore throat - so, left it for 2/3 months, then tried again. This went on until March/April 1961 (by which time we had moved into the new home at Manurewa).

One night, in my bedroom after dinner - dragged the bayonet from the wardrobe, wiped off the dust, and, tried yet again for the umpteenth time to get it down past my throat - which I swear, had a mind of its own. It just refused to open up! Then from the kitchen (where my father
was washing-up)., issued a mighty roar "GET IN HERE AND DRY THE DISHES!" My concentration was totally distracted, the throat muscles relaxed, and - ZZZIP! - down went the blade. I stood there in shock for what seemed an eternity, then stomach convulsing, whipped the blade up and out, and just made it to the loo (it was right next door, thank God!)

Elated, I staggered out to the kitchen and proudly announced to one and all "I've just swallowed my sword" (and lost my dinner) - expecting cheers of congratulations, hand clapping etc. Instead, it was "don't be so bloody stupid" - or words to that effect.

Unfortunately, encouragement was not forthcoming as far as my 'show biz' activities
were concerned - it was more like "about time you stopped this silly nonsense and got a 'real job".

How I've envied magicians I've met around the world, whose parents 'backed' them all the way, once they realised that their youngster(s) was serious about THEIR chosen profession - within the entertainment industry! If ever there was an example of positive thinking in the face
of adverse negativity - I'm it! Believe in yourself, persevere, and eventually, success will be yours!

Towards the end of 1959 - around October - I'm on the main street of Papakura when a Volkswagon beetle drove slowly down - sign-written from top to the bottom, announcing to the world "JOE BROWN'S NATIONWIDE SEARCH FOR STARS TALENT QUEST - GET YOUR ENTRIES HERE!" It pulled up outside the Rose- Marie Milk Bar (the local Juke-box, Milk Shake, Hamburger hang-out for the local youth), and, before the driver had time
to turn off the engine, I was there - the first entry was mine! - then, out came the owner of the Rose-Marie Milk Bar - a Mr. Lou Clauson, who 'side-lined' as singer/compere for various local functions.

He talked a 'blue streak' which got him the job of Compere for all the Talent Quest heats in the Auckland area (nice one, Mate) and re-named himself 'New Zealand's Singing Compere' (in 1962 he teamed up with Simon Mehana, a Maori singer, and they became nationally famous as the Comedy Duo "LOU AND SIMON"). The Joe Brown talent quest ran throughout New
Zealand around May/June the following year - 1960.

Also, in 1959 - November/December - I met Jon Zealando (Trevor Hodson) at the Karaka Hall (Karaka - a small town near Papakura). He was performing Geoffrey Buckingham's routine - magnificently - absolute perfection! I knew about 'back-palming' coins - but not 12 or more -blew me away! It WAS a 'Miser's Dream'! I phoned Jon last week for a quick chat, and to confirm the above info. - thank God, I caught him in bed, as normally a 'quick chat' with Jon can run into a 2-hour marathon - expensive when calling from across the other side of the world! Jon who is 4-5 years my senior (HA!) had just turned 'pro'; I, was just sweet (I think not) sixteen years 'young'. He was an inspiration for me.

Trevor (Jon Zealando) invited me to the New Zealand Society of Magicians as his guest, at the Fabian Club Rooms in Auckland, early 1960, and I was initiated into the Society June 1960 - as reported in the July issue of the newsletter, number 4 - Editor, Tony Wilson. I noted that Burns
Scandrett (de Larno's Magic Centre) was also there - up from Christchurch on a visit. Now that, Burns, is when we would have first met. How about that, my old mate?

That's it - Cheers and Beers - (make mine a Jack Daniels,).

Next week - 1960/61 - the Mime Act, and the Joe Brown tour.
