4. I.B.M. Convention Updates - The Magic Word Podcast
-------------------------------------------
Message by Scott Wells, M.I.M.C. with Gold Star

Ray Hyman and the I.B.M. Convention Updates on The Magic Word Podcast

Last week we posted four separate podcast updates on the daily activities at the 2019 I.B.M. convention in Scottsdale, Arizona. This was one of the better I.B.M. conventions we have had in many years due in no small part to the efforts International President, Michael Finney and his incredible committee of dedicated chairmen and committee members like the co-convention chairmen, Ken Scott, Tom Vorjohan and Oscar Munoz. Links to the podcasts are listed below:

Day One: https://www.themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/501-day-one-ibm-convention
Day Two: https://www.themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/502-day-two-2019-ibm-convention
Day Three: https://www.themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/503-day-three-2019-ibm-convention
Day Four: https://www.themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/504-day-four-2019-ibm-convention

And this week we present a follow-up to the 500th episode with Uri Geller. This week we talk with skeptic and nonagenarian, Ray Hyman. Ray is the professor emeritus of Psychology at the University of Oregon where he befriended Jerry Andrus. Throughout his illustrious career, he became good friends with James Randi who, along with Martin Gardner, formed the modern skeptical movement. He is currently a founding member and distinguished Fellow of the Committee for Skeptical Inquiry. During our conversation, Ray talks about his work with James Randi and rock legend, Alice Cooper. He also tells stories about Dai Vernon, Persi Diaconis, Dr. Stanley Jaks and Hen Fetsch, among others. He talks about his cold reading workshops, palmistry and graphology. This is a full episode which you can fine here: https://www.themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/505-ray-hyman And be sure to subscribe to our weekly "Pod-Letter" so you don't miss out on any contests or announcements. It's free and comes to your inbox weekly as the podcasts are released.

This week we also welcome two new members of the Friends of The Magic Word: Sune Alexanderson Narud and Ryan Johnson. Thank you, our new friends who have pledged their financial support to keep this podcast going. We appreciate you listening and for your support and dedication to the future of magic.

6. Your Thoughts Are Mine...John Carey #51
-------------------------------------------
Message by John Carey (UK)
https://carey-scene.com/jc-main

Here is an effective, semi-automatic thought-of card piece, with a strong double climax.
Let's say you are working with a blue deck. Stack the top five cards of the deck with any four number cards under ten and one picture card, say Jack of Spades. You will also require a red back Jack of Spades. On the back of it write, "Your thoughts are mine!" Place this card on top of the blue deck and slip the deck inside its box, tucking the half moon flap under the odd back card.

Take the deck from the box, holding back the stranger card with the tip of the first finger. Casually place the box aside mouth down.

False shuffle, retaining the five card set up on top and then hand the deck to your helper. Have her cut about a third of the deck and table it to your left. Then have her shuffle the cards left and then cut off about half these cards and table them to the right of the first packet. Finally direct her to shuffle the remaining cards and table them to the right of the other two packets.

Comment on how well she shuffled and then have her assemble the packets from left to right and square up. This is my Shuffled Ose and was inspired by a great Ben Earl idea called the Spectator Holdout, published in the magazine Gambit issue #2. Jay Ose's false cut in Lorayne's Close Up Card Magic was also of course a source of inspiration.

So we are in a very strong position: The spectator has shuffled the deck and yet our five card set up has been retained on top. Ask your helper to deal off five cards and place the deck aside. Have her mix this packet and then instruct her to spread the packet with the faces towards her, like a hand of poker.

"Samantha, focus on those cards and think of the highest valued card. If there is more than one card of the same value, just decide on one and lock the image of that card in your mind."

Of course she will think of the Jack of Spades and the scripting is smoke. Ask her to mix the packet and then lose it in the deck. Then get her to shuffle really well before handing the deck back to you. Pick up the card box and place the deck inside, secretly feeding or loading the stranger card into the body of the deck. This is simply done by pushing the short edge of the deck onto the stranger and pushing the deck down and inside the box. Hand the box to the lady and get her to hold it between her palms.

"So from a deck you shuffled, Samantha, I asked you to merely think of a card and then to shuffle some more. It doesn't get much fairer."

Now proceed to do a piece-by-piece divination of her thought of card, culminating in naming her Jack of Spades. "It's almost as if your thoughts are mine."

A moment later retrieve the deck and remove the cards. Spread them face-down until the stranger card with the message on the back appears. Pause and then smile. A moment later take it out and slowly turn it over to reveal her thought of card and conclude this meeting of two minds!

9. S.A.M. preview of August 2019 M-U-M
------------------------------------
Message by Lindsay Smith (US)

Todd Karr brings us "Forgotten Scenes of the S.A.M. and Annemann" in this month's cover feature. In researching the works of Ted Annemann for the Miracle Factory anthology "Annemann's Enigma," Todd noticed that many of Ted's "Jinx" editorials preserved a host of otherwise-lost stories about the SAM. He shares many of the most enjoyable or revealing episodes here. I predict you'll be fascinated.

Todd follows with "The Twist of the Tiber or How Not to Flop Like Annemann." The title alone should draw you into Todd's updated, improved variations of Annemann's "The Test of the Tiber," a phone-book divination. Things go from tipsy (Ted) to terrific (Todd).

Somehow, George Schindler has managed to pull together some totally diverse elements: Olmedo Renteria, a 78-year-old star magician from Ecuador known as "The Great Olmedini;" a blind magician (same guy) who arrived in the U.S. in 1990, and performed magic for 30 years on the New York subway system; the New York Yankees; and a $10,000 donation to the SAM Magic Endowment Fund. Our Dean brings this diversity together in his article "Yankees Honor Olmedini and Endow the SAM."

Richard Cohn takes us back in time to 1961 and the founding of the Independent Magical Performers Society, a junior magic club associated with Parent Assembly #1 in New York City. Paul Norris was the founder, and Arnold Belais was the spark plug. Richard then brings us up to date with the April 2019 "Reunion of IMPS" where 10 available former members reminisced about memories of the club's early years.

New SAM National President Steve Spence hits the ground running with his "From the President's Desk" report on the Chicago Celebration and midyear business meeting in June. He pulls no punches as he discusses the fiscal challenges facing the organization, and steps approved by the National Council (Bad News, Good News) to help restore the Society to a solid financial footing. You'll want to read this.

In "The Dean's Diary," George Schindler gives us a tour of the Circus & Clown Museum, which George and his wife, Nina, toured several years ago when they were in Vienna. From his descriptions, it sounds like a fascinating place we'd all like to visit. Short of that, check out the YouTube video link he provides.

When David Corsaro writes about planning ahead, as he does in this month's "No Smoke, No Mirrors" column, he's not thinking next week or even next month. He suggests that to grow your business, you should think long-term. His friend Dick Steiner plans for annual events, but also goes out five or more years. Really!

"Magic in a Bottle" columnist Kien Meng Wee introduces us to Professor Messy who looks suspiciously like Mr. Bottle. Indeed, this is his science show, which incorporates real science principles and the extra surprise element of magic. It's all about targeting different children's markets.

Brian Lees offers his thoughts on non-verbal communication in his "Taking the Stage" column. He points out that we express a wide range of emotions with our facial expressions. Then there's arm and hand gestures, and other movements. Brian offers plenty of examples that can enhance your routines, and suggests starting places to turn to for help.

Some of the younger SAM members and SYM members may not know what carbon paper is. But as Paul Draper points out in his "On Second Thought…" column: What's old is new again. There's no need to buy expensive technological props when tested ideas from the past are available. He offers three effects using this idea. Copy it.

Cinde and Dal Sanders write about finding the right "fit" for your show. Their 40 years of performing school shows was the perfect fit for the television producer who knew exactly what he wanted. It was a win-win for both. The team explains how to evaluate and find your niche, especially in the TV market, and things to be cautious of. Spoiler alert: Not all TV hosts or interviewers find magic as entertaining and exciting as you do.

Bruce Kalver shares recommendations on four items in this month's "Tech Tricks," including one trick he'd rather not share with you because it's so good that he'd rather keep it for himself. Read about "The Stranger Knows" and three others this month.

Five of M-U-M's well-posted reviewers offer their subjective and honest opinions and recommendations in this month's "ShopTalk." You'll find reviews of one book, eight tricks, one DVD, one download, and one miscellaneous item. You may find the perfect trick for a routine you're working on, or (put that credit card away) a trick best avoided.

Norman Beck takes us into his other significant area of interest -- bridge - and discusses liars, cheating, and a difference of perception in his "Thoughts on Thinking" column. It's a short course on using words wisely that goes beyond the game of bridge.

As always, throughout M-U-M's pages you'll find your other go-to favorites, including Alan Howard's "Preshow" column, 18 (count 'em) pages of "Assembly Reports" where great meeting ideas lurk, and SAM news and member information. Check "Diversions" for PNP Dick Bowman's "Magic IQ," "Magic WORDoodles," "Basil the Baffling and Chloe," and "Path Puzzles." Please tell our valued advertisers that you saw their ad in M-U-M. They always appreciate knowing that.

15. The Orchante Saga - Beginnings
-------------------------------------
Written by the late Tommy Orchard (The Amazing Orchante)

There's a Magician/Hypnotist in town - Manurewa - the Later Years

It's Sunday January 7th 2001 - and I'm relating events in my life, from 1954 to ........ now, that's a little scary! Do you, like me, sometimes feel like it was only yesterday?

Word soon got around Manurewa, and I started performing at various Weddings, 21st's parties, etc. - as you do. Quite often, the local newspapers would report on 'so and so's' wedding, etc., with "and local young magician, Tommy Orchard, SON OF LOCAL POLICEMAN, performed magic at such and such an affair - and hypnotised a group of people and ----. etc". Always, it was "the SON OF JACK ORCHARD-----" One week, it would be a report of how "JACK ORCHARD ARRESTED LOCAL YOBBO" - the next, "Tommy Orchard, the son of ----" It was almost a challenge to see which of us would grab the next headlines.

BACKTRACK! While temporarily living in Papakura, I, like most magicians, got interest in Ventriloquism - learnt the art from the book 'Ventriloquism for Boys and Girls' - A Complete Set of Lessons in the Art of Voice Magic, written by Douglas Houlden, published 1958. Got a
' Vent' doll (it was made in Australia) from God knows where, and practised like mad. I remember riding my bicycle round the streets with 'Melvin' (that's what I called him), on the bar, yelling 'hello - how are you - goodbye' to all and sundry. That was fun. Hey - it wasn't me -
it was the little fella - no, no, the other little fella - the wooden one!

I've also acquired (probably from the same source I got Melvin), three booklets all written by GEORGE TOLLERTON - New Zealand's most famous ventriloquist during the '40s. He became a house hold name with his radio show called, 'Chuckles with Jerry' (Jerry being his vent. Doll).
These booklets, titled respectively 'Chuckles with Jerry' pub. 1940 - 'Jerry Chuckles Again' pub. 1944, and, ';Chuckling Jerry's Micro-fun' pub. 1946, are full of scripts from the Radio shows, from which I put an act together, thus adding another string to my bow.

It was okay for a while - had some fun, earned a few 'pennies' but, not really my forte - besides, there was already a ventriloquist in Auckland at the time - the absolute best, and, still is, my friend Trevor Hodson - better known throughout the country as 'Jon Zealando' - he is an immensely multi-talented magician/entertainer. In the early '60s another 'vent.' appeared briefly on the scene - Alan Cox - called himself 'Alleni'- got some good publicity for a short time, then 'disappeared' to Australia.

I've got a little ahead of myself. For the first year or two after returning to 'civilisation' I felt very much like a 'fish out of water', having gotten used to the country way of life, which I loved - since then, city life never has agreed with me - much rather be outside of city or town limits - spoilt, you see, by Raupunga, although THAT was pretty extreme!

Finished off my schooling at Papatoetoe High School (a town about 5 miles north of Manurewa), but didn't enjoy that too much, I was always getting 'stick' because I was a 'cop's' son - many of the pupils, like me, came from Manurewa, and my father wasn't too popular with the local lads - he 'spoiled all their fun'.

The local Dairy (Milk Bar in the U.S.A. and Australia) was the 'hang-out' for everyone - it had THE JUKE-BOX -continuously pounding all the latest rock and roll hits of the day - the owner must have made a fortune. My father was always there, either trying to get the volume turned down, or breaking upsquabbles/fights, or looking for some yobbo, (they all were as far as Dad was concerned). I wasn't allowed near the place, so that kind of put me on the outer - apart from the 'crime' of being a policeman's son.

Every time one of the 'lads' or their father got into strife with 'THE LAW' revenge could be had via THE LAW'S son! It took an awful lot of magic tricks and hypnotic 'stunts' to save my skin behind them bike-shed, - it's little things like that which my Dad knew nothing about, until now. Self-preservation played a large part in my becoming a 'better' entertainer and I very quickly learned how to talk my way into, and out of, most situations!

Events seemed to move very quickly in 1959/60/61. I shall expound further next issue. Have fun, everyone!
