4. Magician's Body Found After Failed River Escape Stunt
------------------------------------
Article forwarded on by Rob Thomas
CNN
Indian
police have recovered the body of a stuntman who went missing
in the Hooghly River Sunday while attempting a daredevil
trick, authorities confirmed.
Chanchal
Lahiri, 40 -- better known by his stage name "Jadugar
Mandrake", or "Wizard Mandrake" -- was undertaking
an escape stunt near the Howrah Bridge in Kolkata, where
he was tied up with steel chains and rope and lowered into
the water.
He
was expected to free himself and swim to the surface as
he had done many times before. Yet worried spectators, which
included team members and his family, launched a frantic
search along the banks of the river after he failed to emerge
30 minutes later.
Before
being lowered into the water, Agence France-Presse (AFP)
reported that Lahiri told the crowd: "If I can open
it up then it will be magic, but if I can't it will be tragic."

This
week on the Magic Word Podcast we offer the first of a two-part
conversation with Pat Hazell, one of the stand-out performers
at last year's MAGIC Live! convention in Las Vegas. We take
a deep dive and get a closer look at this comedy genius

times including with Johnny Carson and Jay Leno. He has
also appeared in many movies and television. But he may
be best known as one of the writers for "Seinfeld",
the popular American television series.

7. Twin Thoughts - John Carey #47
-------------------------------------------
Message by John Carey (UK)

The
following two-deck piece is designed for more formal performance.
With very little work, an uncanny coincidence and implied
transposition is created. My inspiration was a double brainwave
effect of Allan Ackerman's in his book Las Vegas Kardma.
You
will require a red deck and a blue deck. Take out the Jack
of Hearts from the blue deck and place it on the bottom
of the red deck. Reverse these actions and take out the
matching Jack of Hearts from the red deck and place it on
the bottom of the blue deck. Box both decks and you are
good to go.
Bring
both decks out and remove them from their boxes. Pick up
the red deck and spread it, without exposing the stranger
card. Swing cut about half the deck into the left hand and
as you complete the cut, secretly side jog the face card
of the right hands cards by pushing it about an inch and
a half to the right with the pads of the left fingers. Ribbon
spread the red deck from left to right and nearest you.
The blue stranger card will be nicely hidden because of
this hideout move of Charles Nyquist, published many years
ago in Hugard's Magical Monthly Magazine.
Comment on how earlier in the day you were spreading through
that deck and one card just seemed to pop out at you and
you just can't get it out of your head.
Pick
up the blue deck and spread, again being sure not to expose
the red stranger card on the face. Casually swing cut a
few packets into the left hand and as both hands come together
get a left little-finger break beneath the stranger Jack
of Hearts. Mention you would like a spectator to put the
thought of a card in their mind. Dribble force to your break
and raise the face of the right hands cards towards them.
Lower this hand and bring both hands together and secretly
side jog the force card, just like earlier in the piece.
Ribbon spread this blue deck nearest to your helper. The
Nyquist hideout once again comes to our aid and everything
looks copacetic. Slowly square up both decks and invite
your helper to cover her deck with her right hand. You mirror
her actions with your deck.
"So
Raj. You're thinking of a card and so am I. A card is made
up of a colour, a suit and a value. Form a mental image
of that card for me please as I do the same. My card is
a red card. Yours is too? My card is a Heart. And yours?
Very interesting. On the count of three lets both call out
our thoughts. One, two, three. Jack of Hearts!!! Now that's
spooky. So, my thoughts are yours and your thoughts are
mine. Please pick up your deck and spread it across the
table as I spread mine. Look there's a card in each spread
standing out like a stranger in the crowd. Please take them
both out and turn them over. Now that's what you call synchronicity!"
As
per the presentation above, you do the step-by-step colour,
suit and value coincidence and then both decks are spread
and a stranger card is revealed face-down in each deck.
Both are taken out and turned over and the mystery is concluded.

8. The Magicians Podcast

The
Magicians' Podcast Richard Young
The
second in our trio of interviews is with David Copperfield's
Executive Producer Chris Kenner. In this interview Chris
discusses his thoughts on creativity in magic and the overuse
of that particular word. He also talks about his generosity
towards young magicians and why he doesn't give them advice.
Chris also shares the story of his first meeting with David
Copperfield and how he made his way up the ranks to his
current position. He talks about why the Tornado of Fire
TV special was David's last and also shares an anecdote
about a disagreement with the boss in a high-pressure environment.

About The Magicians:
Dan Sperry - Anti-Conjuror, Dan Sperry has been described
as David Copperfield meets Marilyn Manson and is the only
illusionist to ever be awarded the title of most original
magician on FOX's "World Magic Awards." His show
combines illusion and the bizarre with satirical macabre
humor. It is non-stop mayhem set to an industrial musical
score with razor blades, buzz saws, voodoo, blood and more.
Sperry has toured with Masters of Illusion and is featured
in the 6th season of the hit television series Masters of
Illusion currently airing on The CW Network.
Farrell Dillon is known for his regular appearances on five
seasons of The CW Network's Masters of Illusion. He has
been nominated for Stage Magician of the Year by The Magic
Castle in Hollywood. When not headlining in Las Vegas, Dillon
can be seen on tour in some of the United States' largest
performing arts venues. He has been seen on television on
The Today Show, ABC, NBC, FOX, The CW, ESPN, The Food Network,
MTV, BBC, My Network TV and POP TV, to name a few. Dillon
combines hilarious comedy and mind-melting magic in a modern
style.
Michael Turco fell in love with the mystery of magic when
he was just five years old. Spending his summers just miles
from the strip in Atlantic City, Turco saw every magic show
in the area and was intent to master each trick and illusion
on his own. Turco has had his own show in Las Vegas at Planet
Hollywood casino and brought a little bit of Jersey to the
strip. The press describes Turco as "a natural born
talent
a true success story." Turco has been with
the Masters of Illusion Live! tour for five years now and
has been featured on the hit CW television series Masters
of Illusion numerous times, most recently on the 6th season
currently airing.
Tommy Wind is a magician from Staten Island in New York
City. He has performed in many of his own original shows,
combining illusion with Rock and Roll music, in New York
City, Atlantic City, New Jersey, and Las Vegas, Nevada.
Wind began his career when he was only seven years old after
his grandfather introduced him to magic by showing him the
disappearing hanky trick. He is now the youngest magician
to perform in Las Vegas to date. Wind is a hip, young illusionist
who combines his amazing magic and musical talents into
a fun, unique show for all ages. Wind is an award recipient
of the International Brotherhood of Magicians and was a
winner of "Magician of the Year" award on the
network television special "World Magic Awards."
He was recently featured in the Bally's Las Vegas hit show
Masters of Illusion Live! Wind has appeared multiple times
on The CW Network's hit television show, Masters of Illusion,
including the current sixth season now airing.

13. The Orchante Saga - Beginnings
-------------------------------------
The Orchante Saga - Beginnings
Written
by the late Tommy Orchard (The Amazing Orchante)
Major
Marshall and Bus, Wairoa College, The Great Benyon and Hypnotism
Major
Marshall, one of nature's gentlemen and his wonderful wife,
Mary, lived in little cottage up the Putere Lakes road.
Surrounded by tall trees and bush - a lovely spot, but boy,
was it spooky at night, especially after Mary had spun one
of her Maori ghost yarns. Outside, the wind rustling in
the trees, the 'mo-pork' cries of an owl, and the strangling
screams of possums - all contributing to massive goose bumps,
and hairs bristling on the back of your neck. Major owned
and operated the only bus service - Raupunga - Wairoa return,
5 days a week.
He
knew every twist, turn, boulder and pot-hole on 'the road
from hell'. I still applaud his fortitude, enduring for
years that tortuous return expedition. It was on this bus,
travelling on that awful road where every pot-hole bounced
the bus and all aboard, to Kingdom Come and back, that I
practised 'the Coin Roll', deliberately sitting on the back
seat; and spent a lot of time hanging on for dear life,
scrabbling around the length and breadth of the bus, underneath
seats, looking for my precious penny.
Why
on the back seat? Because there, you really bounce! A Tommy
philosophy - practise and perfect under difficult circumstances
- everything else then becomes easy. If you're just starting
out on the 'sleight of hand' road, learn to palm a coin
that has no milled edges. Got a pack of cards? - chuck in
sink; add water, soil and some booze, let soak, then throw
outside and let dry in the sun; NOW learn your stuff! You
will meet jokers who will throw such packs at you, sneering
'Okay, smart arse - put your fancy marked cards away' (even
if they're not) 'and use these'!!
Sorry,
skidded off the runway a bit - I'll get back on the flight
line! I left Raupunga school to attend Wairoa College. Major
would pick me up in his bus, from the Police Station at
Raupunga. The last 5 feet at the back of the bus was partitioned
off, only accessible from the outside,
to accommodate all the milk-cans that Major would pick up
from the farms, (I'd help Major load the milk cans on board,
and a full milk can isn't exactly light, but it sure did
wonders for my physique) and deliver them to the Wairoa
Dairy milk processing plant. Consequently, when Major picked
me up at around 7 a.m. I wouldn't get to College until around
10 a.m. A three-hour trip. I'd leave again at 3 p.m. sharp,
and would get home around 6 - 7 p.m. A long day, with not
much schooling, (okay by me, but not the college, or Mum
and Dad).
The
decision was made; I boarded in Wairoa, and came home for
the weekends. Didn't like it much - two things made it bearable,
and one major incident which got my name in print - (for
the first time - certainly not the last). The first, was
meeting (I have no memory of how) a chap named Willie Crarer
- an amateur magician. I vaguely remember that he lived
in a large home down a long drive-way.. I think he either
owned or managed a large store in Wairoa - Dalgety's rings
a bell - don't really know. Ken Boreham - who was at Wairoa
College at the same time
as I was, would know.
Ken
was 'into' Magic as well. (Met Ken again years later in
1972 when I was doing a show in a Wairoa Hotel). There was
a Magic club, but I don't remember attending. I have a book
- 'Magical Ways and Means' by Al Baker which Willie Crarer
signed and gave to me. It's stamped 'Wairoa Magician's Society'
- quite an advanced book for an 11 - 12-year-old. Perhaps
he had some precognition as to what road I was on; wherever
you are, Willie, thank you - you were right! I still perform
'The Magical Filtration of Four Half Dollars' from that
book - it's perfect.
The
second thing was - The Great Benyon hits town. To any young
Magic mad kid to see The Great Benyon was, well, Magic,
with a capital 'M'. It's all so long ago, like a dream -
the quick changes - I can still hear him saying 'Same man,
different clothes' (did notice that he lost a lot of
weight as the show progressed). The Linking rings, Substitution
trunk, and, the one that really sticks in my mind, was 'The
Ghost House'.
Then
there was the pseudo-Hypnotism segment - 'pseudo' because
I found out much later that it was a sham, but I was sold,
big time. I just had to find out how to develop this 'power'.
The name 'Franquin' is also floating about - rumours that
he can make anyone do anything just by looking at them;
The local bookshop had two books - 'Hypnotism and Self Hypnosis'
by Ralph Slater, an English Hypnotist, (circa 1952) and
'Open Your Mind - a Course on Hypnotism', by Franquin, 1954.
These two books became my 'bibles'.
So
began my 'journey' studying the intricacies of the human
mind, hypnotism, psychology, self hypnosis, yoga; and practising
the hypnotism lessons at College.
More
of this next week, - the 'MAJOR INCIDENT'.- BIG trouble!
