3. MAGIC Live 2019 - Hotel Discount
--------------------------------------
Message by Stan Allen (US)
August
4 -7, 2019 Las Vegas, Nevada
In
just about three months, we'll all be gathering at The Orleans
Hotel in Las Vegas.
If
you have already made your room reservations...
You
should have received The Orleans confirmation email stating
that all paid nights are subject to a resort fee of $28.24
per night ($24.99 fee + tax).
But
that's not correct. This statement is part of the universal
confirmation the hotel uses, and cannot be updated to reflect
our discounted resort fee.
The
hotel has confirmed that as long as you book using our group
code (MAGIC9), you will receive the negotiated $15.99 resort
fee, which comes out to only $18.07 per night with tax.
If
you have not made your room reservations...
The
Orleans Hotel has sold out the last five MAGIC Live years,
and a number of our guests had to stay off property. Even
though the Gold Coast is just down the street, we all know
it's not the same as staying at the convention hotel.
When
making your hotel reservations, remember that our special
room rates extend before and after the convention dates.
So, come early or stay late - or do both. It is Las Vegas!

4. FISM North American Magic Championships
--------------------------------------------
Message by Joan Caesar (Canada)
FISM
North American (This is the competition for North American
acts to qualify for the FISM 2021 World Championships) are
just a year away. Quebec City, where it's being held, is
a popular convention town and is already hosting other events
at the same time as FISM-NACM so it's important to book
your room early.
The
host hotels are in a tourist area so they are more expensive
than what we are used to paying for a magic convention.
However, there are other options. I looked at Airbnb rooms
in the area of the convention, and there were several for
around $50.00/night and several more for less
than $100.00/night.
Another
option is Hotwire.com which provides the location and cost
of the hotel but not the exact address or name before you
book your room. I've used them on occasion and found the
hotels quite satisfactory. It would be smart to look for
alternative lodging fairly soon, before the
good ones are taken.

6. Preview of M-U-M's May issue
--------------------------------------------
Message by Lindsay Smith (US)
This month's cover features a photo of the legendary Johnny
Thompson, although "legendary" may not be a big
enough word to cover all he has accomplished in his life
and what he has done for magic and magicians. The nine-page
inside feature, "Call Him Great: Remembering Thompson
and Tomsoni," shares thoughts and stories by a few
of his many friends.
Sadly, M-U-M's second feature also involves the passing
of a well-known name in magic, "Marshall Brodien"
by Mark Jensen. As Mark points out, the breadth of Marshall's
career was amazing, going well beyond the fact that he sold
more than 18 million TV Magic Cards. You may still have
a deck in your desk drawer at home.
National SAM President Ron Ishimaru explains why Hawaii
has been a magical magnet and haven for world traveling
and home-grown magicians in his "From the President's
Desk" column. Beginning with John Henry Anderson, "The
Great Wizard of the North," in 1859, numerous well-known
magicians have visited, performed, or lived in Hawaii, ending
with - perhaps - you. He mentions the conventions the 50th
state has hosted, and writes about the Honolulu-based Hawaii
Wonderworkers Workshop, plus much more.
Anyone who has been through airport security screenings
will appreciate and maybe identify with the TSA stories
in SAM Dean George Schindler's "The Dean's Diary"
this month. He concludes by asking for any true TSA or Customs
stories you may have. C'mon, you know you have one. Write
George.
In Cinde and Dal Sanders' column, "TV or Not TV,"
they explain what magic to avoid on television. Television
studio lighting is always a problem, as is black art, and
smoke and mirrors. Early analog TV cameras have changed
to digital HD cameras with a shallower depth of field. Learning
what to avoid can save you a lot of challenging headaches.
David Corsaro's "No Smoke, No Mirrors" column
is all about exposure. No, not exposing secrets. This one's
about performing your show for "no fee, but excellent
exposure." Depending on the circumstances, there are
various ways of dealing with this situation. David offers
suggestions on getting the client to think value over cost.
There's one fabulous mentalism effect that continues to
be a closer in many excellent shows today. Paul Draper's
column, "On Second Thought
" is devoted to
this one effect and he shares his tips, thoughts, changes,
and updates with you. He directs you to books and videos
of this effect should you want to update how you do your
routine, or consider adding this to your act.
We've all seen stage magicians performing an effect where
they seem to be hiding behind their roll-on table. In his
"Taking the Stage" column Brian T. Lees simply
says, "Stop Hiding." Working behind a table can
create a barrier between you and the audience, he notes.
He suggests blending the table into your performance, remembering
not to confuse the working equipment with the entertainment.
Don't be anchored to your table; the whole stage is yours.
Daniel Garber, an award-winning children's magician from
Argentina, joins Kien Meng Wee, a.k.a. "Mr. Bottle,"
in his "Magic in a Bottle" column. The challenge
this month is to teach children the right thing. Daniel
gets one important message across about littering to his
audience during his Candy Wrapper Blendo routine, suggesting
that you think about how you can incorporate values into
your magic.
"Illusions of Grandeur" columnist David Seebach
devotes his column to the Disembodied Princess illusion,
also known as the Girl Without a Middle. David takes you
through the differences between the Abbott's version and
the Owen Magic Supreme version, the changes David made to
fabrication, design, and color. Professional that he is,
David writes about themes, backgrounds, costumes, and music.
As he says, "This is show business!"
As always, in an effort to help you make the best decisions
possible when it comes to buying new tricks, books, or DVDs,
our knowledgeable reviewers offer their opinions on the
latest offerings in "ShopTalk," always a go-to
section of M-U-M. This month they evaluate two books, six
tricks, and one DVD.
"Tech Tricks" columnist, online edition coordinator,
and all-around SAM tech guru Bruce Kalver offers three more
tech tricks to consider, based on his scouring the Internet
and using the apps and products he recommends. This month:
PhotoPrediction, a killer card effect using a Photos app;
a unique oval-shaped desk light to magically enlighten your
home; and Mindpower, a variation of the Princess Card Trick
on the Internet.
David Goodsell's contribution to "The S.A.M. History
Project" this month centers on the history of the wand
spin ball vanish, and three of its better-known practitioners.
You can learn it and add it to your Cups & Balls routine
but be forewarned. It'll take lots of practice. As David
writes, "Excellence doesn't come cheap or easy."
In this month's "Thoughts on Thinking" column,
Norman Beck gives a waiter at one of Dallas's finest upscale
(read: pricey) restaurants several things to think about.
As it turned out, and deservedly so, the dinner experience
for the waiter was more expensive than for Norman and his
friend.
In addition, there's more to look forward to, including:
"Preshow" by Editor Alan Howard, "Correspondence,"
19 (count 'em) pages of "Assembly Reports," "Broken
Wands" (sadly, eight obituaries), Alan Wassilak's "Basil
the Baffling & Chloe," and Dick Bowman's "Magic
IQ" under "Diversions," and SAM member news.
And, as always, our advertisers would like to hear that
you saw their ad in M-U-M.

7. Shep Hyken On The Magic Word
---------------------------------------
Message by Scott Wells, M.I.M.C. with Gold Star
This
week we harken back to a friendship that was rekindled during
MagiCuba in Havana in 2018. While at that event, I spent
quite a bit of time with an old friend and secured a deeper
friendship with Shep Hyken. Our friendship goes back for
several decades, but our individual schedules have taken
us in opposite directions. But now that we have "reconnected",
we go out of our way to find time to spend together whenever
we are in the same city. Well, such was the case recently
with Shep's speaking schedule had him in my hometown of
Houston, Texas and we spent time behind the MWP microphone.
Shep
is a professional and well-known (and in high demand) speaker
who gets paid big bucks for his advice. In this week's podcast,
you get more than your money's worth with his marketing
tips. He also talks about his early days in magic and developing
his trade show clients then later converting many of them
into clients for his keynote speeches. In this podcast,
Shep talks about making the transition and what he is doing
today.
You
can watch a video highlight clip of Shep at work, see some
candid and some professional photos, read the blog, listen
to the podcast online and download the MP3 file at: https://www.themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/490-shep-hyken
This
week we also welcome Craig Fifer as the newest Friend of
The Magic Word. Thank you, Craig, for your pledge to financially
support the podcast with your monthly donations. We hope
you will enjoy the many perks that go with your membership.
If you would like to help the podcast with a financial donation/pledge,

8. Three Chances - John Carey #41
--------------------------------------------
Message by John Carey (UK)
https://carey-scene.com/jc-main
I have always been fascinated by the classic mystery card
effect. There are so many nice possibilities to achieve
the effect. The following is my most recent addition to
this genre and is a no frills, very direct and practical
approach.
From
a shuffled deck in use slide out any face-down card and
table it. I refer to this as the card that represents the
future...
Have
a card selected and signed, and control it to the top efficiently.
State that you will have three chances to find their signed
card. Execute any in the hands false cut and deal off the
top card (signed selection) and place it on top of the 'future
card'. Then carry out a genuine in the hands cut and take
the top card and place it beneath the tabled pair. Hand
the deck to your helper.
Pick
up the tabled packet and hold it in left hand dealer's grip.
"Let's see how I did". Apparently deal your first
chance face-up to the table. Really though execute a stud
bottom deal, showing an x card. Drop the mystery card face-down
on top of your first miss. Turn the remaining card face-up
to show you missed again, exhibiting another x card. Drop
it face-up on top of the tabled cards, forming a sandwich.
"Looks
like my luck is out today, but wait a minute... This face-down
card was on the table before you even selected and signed
a card. And I did say I would get three chances. They do
say you can't be in two places at the same time, but maybe,
just maybe you can!"
Ask
your helper to turn over the card that represents the future
to reveal that it is their signed card!

and exclusive 4F Convention, and was the first Italian act
on Penn & Teller: "Fool Us". He has appeared
on international television many times and Starman works

and interpreting the show "Fantasy's Machine"
a creative encounter that has given rise to moments of great
involvement and fun.

10. In Memory of Steve Dusheck
--------------------------------------------
Written by Marsha Dusheck (USA)
On
March 8, 2019, magic lost one of its most inventive and
creative minds, that of Steve Dusheck.
Born
in 1944 in Hazleton, PA,
Steve
became interested in magic at a young age and spent his
whole life performing, writing, lecturing, and most of all,
inventing magic.
In
addition to authoring five magic books, Steve was also an
accomplished musician who played piano, organ, and percussion.
The
people who knew him described Steve as kind, honest, generous,
and a magical genius. His fertile imagination produced voluminous
inventions, including Wunderbar, Dollar Punch, Dusheck's
Dollar, Coin Card, Lethal Tender, C/S Transposition, Ringer,
and hundreds of others, including dozens of business card
tricks.
He
was well-known for having the most populated magic booth
at conventions, demonstrating his effects non-stop with
a passion that itself was magic. Steve was the guest of
honor at FFFF in 1983, featured in an entire issue of Tannen's
Magic Manuscript in 1989, and received the Creative Fellowship
Award from the Academy of Magical Arts in 2007, as well
as numerous additional accolades.
His
Waltzing Matilda was part of the Tenyo Magic's World's Greatest
Magic series, marketed as Ballerina Hank. Steve's death
was mourned around the world but most of all by his local
magic friends who held a tribute in his memory at Paul Mellan's
Magic Shop in Scranton where they told anecdotes about their
friend and mentor while performing tricks he had invented.
Steve is survived by his wife Marsha and his daughter Renee.

a brilliant mentalist. Come see why Mad As Hell, Australia's
Got Talent, The Logies, and Q&A trust him with their
audiences.
Lee Cohen: A second generation magician who began performing
alongside her father age 5, Lee brings a touch of elegance
to her magic. She also brings a rabbit.
