2. FISM North American Magic Championships
--------------------------------------------
Message by Joan Caesar (Canada)
FISM
North American (This is the competition for North American
acts to qualify for the FISM 2021 World Championships) are
just a year away. Quebec City, where it's being held, is
a popular convention town and is already hosting other events
at the same time as FISM-NACM so it's important to book
your room early.
The
host hotels are in a tourist area so they are more expensive
than what we are used to paying for a magic convention.
However, there are other options. I looked at AirBnB rooms
in the area of the convention, and there were several for
around $50.00/night and several more for less than $100.00/night.
Another
option is Hotwire.com which provides the location and cost
of the hotel but not the exact address or name before you
book your room. I've used them on occasion and found the
hotels quite satisfactory. It would be smart to look for
alternative lodging fairly soon, before the good ones are
taken.

3. The History Of The Continental FISM Competitions
--------------------------------------
Message by Joan Caesar (Canada)
In
2003, a new level of Continental Championships was added
to the FISM World Championship of Magic. These continental
championships are designed to both elevate the level of
magic presented a year later and to give the Continental
organizations on opportunity to put their best foot forward.
The
year before the FISM World Championship of Magic, the individual
continents each hold a competition that will decide which
performers from their area will compete the following year.
In 2020 there will be continental championships in FISM-Europe,
FISM-Asia, FISM-South America and FISM-North America. The
winners from these competitions will compete in 2021 at
FISM in Quebec City, Canada.
The
last three FISM continental championships in North American
have been sponsored by the Society of American Magicians
in Pittsburgh (2011) and by the combined IBM and SAM conventions
in St. Louis (2014) and Louisville (2017). In 2020 the FISM-North
America Championship will be sponsored by Le Club Magie
de Quebec and the Canadian Association of Magicians and
held in Quebec City May 6 - May 10. The only way a North
American competitor can earn a place at the 2021 FISM is
to compete and win at the FISM North American Championship.
The
FISM World Championship of Magic will also be held in Quebec
City the following year (2021) in July. Don't let the different
dates in different year in the same city cause confusion.

Message by Stan Allen (US)
Once
again, we've teamed up with over fifty of the world's finest
magic manufacturers and merchants to create the most incredible
"magic shop" you've ever seen. And, as in previous
years, many of these dealers will be unveiling brand new
items at MAGIC Live!
This
year, our newly designed vendor hall will also feature four
mega-booths produced by ProMystic, Vanishing Inc., Tannen's
Magic, and Abstract Effects.
It
all adds up to over 17,000 sq. ft. of WHAT'S NEW!

5. Penn & Teller Auditions Coming To Australia
--------------------------------------------
Message by Helen Coghlan (Australia)
The
dates, venue and performers are still being finalised but
we're so excited, we just had to tell you about it!
One of the highlights will be the Producers of Penn &
Teller: Fool Us are coming Down Under searching for magicians.
This is their first visit to Australia and the only chance
to meet them in the Australasia region. If magicians are
keen on auditioning, we're encouraging them to register
their interest now as places will be limited.
There will also be lectures and special performances from
international guests at the Convention as well as a great
variety of dealers.
Anyone interested in registering their interest can do so

6. Obie's 4F Convention Updates - The Magic Word
---------------------------------------
Message by Scott Wells, M.I.M.C. with Gold Star
What
another week this has been. Last week I attended the memorial
service for Johnny Thompson and this week we see the passing
of another legendary creator, John Cornelius. I hope to
attend his service, too, if I am in the country when it
occurs. This has been a bad year with the deaths of so many
of our greats passing on. Aloha, my friends.
This
week as you read this, The Magic Word Podcast is in Batavia,
New York attending the 49th annual Fechter's Finger Flicking
Frolic, now known as Obie's 4F. I will be posting daily
updates from the inside of this invitation-only close-up
event that is attended by some of the top close-up workers
in the world. This year there are attendees from 21 different
countries and five continents. You can visit the website
each of the four days (beginning April 25th) for daily updates
on what is happening and hear from attendees, performers,
lecturers and dealers. This year we are honoring Mike Powers
as the Guest of Honor.
You
can visit the blog at https://www.themagicwordpodcast.com/
where you will see candid photos from the convention, read
the blog, see the schedule of events, and maybe watch a
video or two, plus listen online and download the MP3 files.
Of course, you can always listen for free from wherever
you get your podcasts. And speaking of free, please be sure
to subscribe to the free weekly newsletter to keep up with
what's happening on the podcast from week to week and get
additional material. And please remember to support us with
your financial contributions by visiting https://www.patreon.com/TheMagicWord
Thanks for your support.

7. Think As I Think - John Carey #40
--------------------------------------------
Message by John Carey (UK)
https://carey-scene.com/jc-main
The
do-as-I-do plot is rightly considered a classic in card
magic. Usually the method revolves around the use of a key
card - the following approach doesn't and has a nice, sneaky
thought of card aspect to it.
You
will require a red deck and a blue deck. The set up from
the top down in each deck needs to be: five spot cards,
King of Hearts, two spot cards and then the rest of the
deck.
Bring
out both decks and table them. Suggest a little experiment
in synchronicity with your audience. Ask a spectator to
pick up either deck and to remove the cards from its box.
You pick up the remaining deck and remove the cards.
Mention
that in Las Vegas and Atlantic City they have schools for
croupiers, where people are taught to handle cards neatly
and professionally before they are allowed to work at the
Poker and BlackJack tables.
Ask
your helper to partake in a card-handling lesson and to
copy you. Deal cards face-down into a packet on the table
until you have dealt at least six cards. Be sure to make
sure your helper does the same, sending the King of Hearts
sixth from the face in each packet. Continue by overhand
shuffling your remaining cards and have your helper replicate
you. Then cut off a packet and place it on top of your tabled
cards. The spectator is once again asked to copy you. Repeat
the above shuffle and cut sequence one more time, finishing
by dropping any remaining cards on top of your deck.
Your
helper copies you one final time with these mixing actions
as you comment on how well they have done.
Now
a sneaky ruse, courtesy of my friend, Dani DaOrtiz. "A
deck of cards consists of two types of cards. Number cards
and?" They will of course say picture cards. "Yes
indeed. I think it's fair to say that picture cards are
easiest to visualize, with lots of colour and detail."
Pick
up your deck and ask your helper to watch what you do. With
the faces of the deck towards you, say that you will spread
through your cards and think of the first picture card you
see. Act out these actions with your cards, spreading a
fair way into the deck as a subtlety. Ask the spectator
to pick up her cards and to think of the first picture card
they come to as you turn your head away. Because of the
set up and the deal, shuffle and cut ruse, this card will
be the King of Hearts of course.
Both
of you then shuffle the decks and then table them as you
recap what has happened. "Please remove the card you
are merely thinking of from your deck and this time I will
copy you." After the two cards have been removed, build
up the conditions and bring the trick home, showing that
great minds do think alike and a perfect matching of thoughts
is revealed!

Chad Long's Shuffling Lesson in the Art of Astonishment
inspired this with the hands-off deal, shuffle and cut ruse.
