National
Houdini Day & Week - March 24-30
National
Houdini Day-"Escape the Ordinary"-In honor of
the great magician-escape artist Harry Houdini who was born
March 24 in 1874. Escape the everyday and free of the negativity
in your life. Do something on this day and throughout the
week that is out of the ordinary for you. Step out of your
comfort zone and take a positive step for you and hopefully
others also. Perform a good deed that will even amaze yourself.
Houdini's mysterious death occurred on Halloween, October
31, 1926. One of his favorite quotes is, "No prison
can hold me; no hand or leg irons or steel locks can shackle
me. No ropes or chains can keep me from my freedom."
He was an amazing person and not only did he escape from
handcuffs, jails, strait-jackets and many other types of
restraints but he also escaped from poverty to become the
highest paid entertainer of the day. He was truly an extraordinary
person. He was also known for his generosity and good deeds.
Embrace good change and let the magic begin.
National Houdini Day and Week was first instituted by celebrity
magician Wayne Alan in 2019. Mr. Alan is writing a book
about Houdini titled Houdini-The Inside Story Of His Life
And Legend-A Behind the Scenes Look at the Man, the Legend,
the Magician and Escape Artist. He also announced The Houdini
Festival to be held at the Historic North Theatre in Danville,
VA on March 26-28, 2020.
Mr. Alan has traveled around the world researching Houdini
in libraries, theatres, and private collections. He has
collected thousands of pages of documents, letters, stories
and memorabilia relating to Houdini. His collection is so
extensive that he even owns architectural artifacts from
the hospital room where Houdini died in 1926.
Wayne Alan is the owner of the Historic North Theatre in
Danville, VA. Mr. Alan is America's only World Champion
Illusionist. He is the only American to ever win the gold
medal for Grand Illusion at FISM (1982), the World Championship
of Magic, which is considered the Olympics of Magic. He
has also appeared numerous times on national TV and 13½
times at the White House.
Mr. Alan is still looking for any new Houdini facts, stories
or anecdotes and unpublished photos. He can be reached at
The Historic North Theatre, 629 N. Main St., Danville, VA
24540. Phone 434-793-SHOW (7469) or email Wayne@WayneAlanMagic.com

3. New Magic Magazine. First Issue Free
---------------------------------------
Message by Jose Gonzalez Campos
My
name is Marko. For 14 years I managed The Learned Pig Project
website of which you were a member.
TLPP
was the first online library of magic books and documents
and was offered for free to magicians worldwide.
TLPP
closed five years ago but today I have a new project: The
Learned Pig Magic Magazine.
The
Learned Pig Magic Magazine will be a monthly devoted to
the description of exceptionally fine magic tricks and practical
articles about the art of magic.
I
want you to take a look at the first issue of this new magazine.
Just email me back and I will send it to you totally free.
Why
I'm doing this? Because I'm sure once you see my work you'll
subscribe to The Learned Pig Magic Magazine.
I'm
no newcomer in publishing magic; I've published a magic
magazine in Spanish since 1988 and also several magic books.
During TLPP years I published a magical newsletter in English
which you all got free of charge and was very well received
because of its valuable contents. So you see, I have the
necessary experience for this new project. I also have a
lot of great material waiting to be published in English
for the first time.
The
Learned Pig Magic Magazine will be an electronic magazine
in PDF format which you will receive once a month in your
email. Every issue will contain about 30 pages filled with
excellent and practical magic tricks... magic tricks you
will like and perform!
All
issues are perfectly formatted for printing. At the end
of the year I'll publish a complete Table of Contents so
you can bind all issues together in a beautiful volume.
The
subscription will be only 60 dollars a year. That's 5 dollars
per issue and I assure you will get more than your money's
worth.
But
you don't have to subscribe yet.
Just
email me back asking for the free first issue of The Learned
Pig Magic Magazine. I'll send it so you can read and study
it and then, if you are convinced about its worth, you can
subscribe.
I
think this is a deal where you cannot lose so don't wait
and ask for the free issue No. 1 of The Learned Pig Magic
Magazine. I know you'll be thrilled and delighted with its
content.
Understand
you are under no obligation to subscribe... but I know you
will!
Best
regards,
Marko

4. April Fools' Day Issue Of M-U-M
--------------------------------------
Message by Lindsay Smith (US)
Editor Alan Howard begins his "Preshow" column
this way: "Being an April issue, thoughts of April
Fools' Day were at least in the back of what passes for
our collective mind as we put this magazine together. It's
traditionally a time for pranks, jokes, tricks, and hoaxes
-- a day that many magicians and entertainers think of as
just a normal day. Hopefully you will find something in
this issue that you find amusing." Sadly, Alan then
transitions from foolery to sympathy as he notes the passing
of two magic icons: Marshall Brodien and Johnny Thompson.
This month's cover features "Frederick Eugene Powell:
Master of Magic and Mystery," the second Dean of the
Society of American Magicians, in a well-documented article
by Tom Ewing, national historian for the SAM. Ewing takes
us center stage with information from his new biography
of Powell by the same name.
Don't know the name Yasuo Kiga? You will after reading "The
Magic of Yasuo Kiga" by Arie Vilner. He offers a fascinating
interview with Yasuo, who was friends with and studied with
Shigeo Takagi, Tenkai, Dai Vernon, Slydini, Derek Dingle,
Jerry Andrus, and others. Sessioning with those names should
get your attention.
That interview is followed by "Routines and Moves from
Yasuo Kiga" who explains a Rabbit and Wolves routine,
his Half-Pass Undercut, and his Ultra-Mental Deck routine.
Want more from him? There will be more in an upcoming M-U-M.
Hawaii-based National SAM President Ron Ishimaru reports
from Los Angeles this month in his "From the President's
Desk" column. He begins with a report on attending
KAX-LA2019, the Conference of Variety Family Performers,
offers a quick Q&A on Cabalistic Questions, then concludes
with comments about the Midyear National Council meeting
held at the Brookledge Theater.
SAM Dean George Schindler devotes this month's "The
Dean's Diary" to stories about his friend Michael Ostaski,
better known to you as Mickey O'Malley. You'll learn how
he used his magical and artistic talents in Detroit; New
York; Colon, Michigan; and Hollywood.
When it comes to how you market yourself, David Corsaro
in his "No Smoke, No Mirrors" column writes that
it's the little things that matter. He examines three things
that make a big difference when talking to a prospective
client. You'll learn a lot from these three examples.
"Magic in a Bottle" columnist Mr. Bottle, a.k.a.,
Kien Meng Wee, offers some excellent advice on asking for
feedback about your performance and presentation. Sometimes
difficult to listen to, it's a positive step toward improvement.
He concludes with his rendition of the Hat Tear, almost
a must for kid show performers.
There's stage fright. And then there's TV stage fright.
Cinde and Dal Sanders delve into the latter in this month's
"TV or Not TV" column. Since TV stage fright is
a concern for many people, they offer the steps they recommend
to control the nerves that lead to TV stage fright.
Brian T. Lees in his "Taking the Stage" column
makes the point that announcing each trick is not the best,
or only, way to move through your performance. Phrases like
"For my next trick . . . " get old quickly. He
suggests an alternative to get around this: transition between
your effects. He defines the word and offers multiple examples
of its use. Ideally, both will find a place in your show.
"ShopTalk" is always a go-to column in every M-U-M,
and this month our well-posted reviewers evaluate five tricks
and one DVD. You can agree or disagree with their opinions,
but the objective here is to help you make the best buying
decisions. A second opinion is almost always a good idea,
and it could save you money or enhance your act.
Bruce Kalver is M-U-M's "Tech Tricks" columnist,
and SAM's go-to tech wizard who admits to being a podcast
junkie. Since he subscribes to about 25 of them, he definitely
qualifies. He mentions his appearance on Ken Levine's podcast,
Hollywood and Levine; recommends a Noty app for your iPhone,
and shows us a magical T-shirt that's available as other
items as well. Check it all out.
Not surprisingly, Norman Beck is a big fan of books. Again,
not surprisingly, not just magic books, although he must
have an impressive library of those. In this month's "Thoughts
on Thinking" column he mentions a book that he can't
read. Why? It's Norman's bias against the cover. Typically
Norman, there's more to it than that.
"Diversions" is not to be missed this month, with
"My Punny Dream" by Jim Healey, "My Crystal
Ball" by PNP Dick Bowman, and the regular "Magic
WORDoodles," "Number Grids," "Magic
IQ" also by PNP Bowman, and "Basil the Baffling
and Chloe."
You'll also find SAM member news, the SAM's "National
Council Minutes," "Broken Wands," and "Correspondence."
And don't forget "Assembly Reports." From the
staff of M-U-M, our columnists, and our valued advertisers,
enjoy April Fools' Day on April 1 and this magazine for
the rest of the month.

5. Les Arnold On The Magic Word Podcast
---------------------------------------
Message by Scott Wells, M.I.M.C. with Gold Star
Les
Arnold was one of the early members of the fabled "Long
Beach Mystics" that later welcomed names like Stan
Allen, Mike Caveney, Mark Kalin, David Deeble, Kevin James,
Dana Daniels and many others. Les was the President of that
group in 1962 and the organization lasted for over 30 years.
Les's full time job was as shop teacher so he had a lot
of building skills which came in handy for prop building.
In later life, Les and his daughter formed the team "Les
Arnold and Dazzle" which is a very funny, parody magic
act with lots of original material. That act has been seen
by millions around the world both live and on national television.
In this week's podcast, Les talks about all of this plus
how he has spent time, money and effort on developing new
material only to later "throw it out" since it
was not true to his performing, on-stage character.
You
can watch a video of Les Arnold and Dazzle performing on
"Master of Illusion", see some candid and promo
photos, read the blog, hear the podcast, get some links
to the items reviewed this week, and download the MP3 file
at: https://www.themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/482-les-arnold
This
week we also review three new items: Snapped, Mint-O and
Fully Automatic Card Trick (FACT), which are all quite good
and completely different from one another though all for
the close-up worker.

6. Stranger In The Crowd - John Carey #37
--------------------------------------------
Message by John Carey (UK)
https://carey-scene.com/jc-main
The
following impromptu effect was inspired by a beautiful Dai
Vernon piece, called It Stands Alone, published in The Vernon
Chronicles, volume 2. I wanted a more direct and easier
way to achieve the effect.
Have
the deck shuffled and tabled face-up. Ask a spectator to
cut off about 15 cards and hand them to you. Turn the packet
face-down and spread for a selection. Have them remember
their card and return it to the spread, then control it
to the top with your favourite method.
Secure
a left little-finger break underneath the selection and
ask your helper to cut the face-up tabled cards into two
approximately equal packets. As they do this it gives you
ample misdirection to half pass all the face-down cards
below your break, secretly turning them face-up.
Place
your supposed face-down cards on top of one of the face-up
packets and then place the remaining face-up packet on top.
Bring your right-hand palm down over the deck and slowly
revolve it face-up. Then ribbon spread the deck to reveal
there is now only one face-down card in the spread, standing
out like a stranger in the crowd.
Remove
it and turn it face-up to reveal the selected card and thus
conclude your mystery.

10. Magic Collectors Expo Magic History Event And Convention
--------------------------------------------
Message by Lance Rich
I
have a few updates regarding the Magic Collectors Expo magic
history event and convention this June in Minneapolis, Minnesota
USA. Check out The Magic Collectors Expo this year from
June 20-22.
www.magiccollectorsexpo.com<http://www.magiccollectorsexpo.com>
Because
registrants in 2019 have a guaranteed first chance at registration
for the 2020 Expo in Las Vegas (which includes the exclusive
tour of David Copperfield's International Museum and Library
for the Conjuring Arts), we've received a lot of interest
and even a few registrations of people who have obligations
in 2019, but don't want to miss out on the 2020 Expo.
Also,
the host hotel (The Double Tree Park Place) is approaching
Limited Remaining Availability. So, if you have registered
but haven't completed the hotel registration, you might
do that soon.
The Magic Collectors Expo is being produced by David Sandy
and Bill Smith. It will feature fascinating presentations
about magic's history, an expanded dealers' room, several
surprise events ... and the event ends in a recreation of
a supper club show ... dinner and magic as you might have
seen it in the 1940's and 1950's.
The
event is limited to 200 registrants.
Again,
check out www.magiccollectorsexpo.com
