3. Criss Angel - Greatest Of All Time Award
---------------------------------------
Message by Paul Romhany - Editor Vanish Magazine
The
Awards committee made up of professional magicians from
around the world joined together to vote Criss Angel with
the Vanish GOAT Award - Greatest of All Time. Every single
person who has seen his signature levitation agreed it was
the single best illusion in the history of magic. Performed
on a fully LIT stage it included a suspension, levitation
and so much more.
Wayne
Dobson himself said, "It is the greatest illusion I
have ever seen."
David
Penn, Chairman of the world-wide committee said:
"In
consideration for this award, the Committee wish to acknowledge
the contribution that 'Criss Angel's MINDFREAK Live' has
made to the art of magic and theatrical production. We believe
that the elements and cutting-edge illusions presented in
this production have cemented a permanent place in the history
of magic.
Criss'
Signature Levitation has been acknowledged by many scholars
as the greatest illusion of all time. The levitation, is
only one highlight in a show that can only be described
as 'A Concert Of Illusions'.

4. Preview Of S.A.M.'s March 2019 Issue
--------------------------------------------
Message by Lindsay Smith (US)
"Lawrence Hass, Ph.D., is perhaps the most unusual
magician you'll ever meet." That's the opening line
of this month's cover feature titled "Lawrence Hass:
Philosopher Magician, And So Much More" by Dr. Geoffrey
Grimes. But maybe you already met him - in one of his philosophy
classes, at one of his performances, read one of his books,
or learned from him in one of his classes as Dean of the
McBride Magic & Mystery School in Las Vegas. There's
all that and more in this six-page article by Dr. Grimes,
who was featured on a former M-U-M cover himself.
Following that, Lawrence offers "Two Routines from
Larry Hass," a version of Eugene Burger's The Haunted
Deck, and Skin in the Game, a routine requiring only an
ESP deck and a coin purse.
Protecting Our Magic Youth is the timely topic of "Q&A
with SYM Executive Director Dan Rodriguez" about recent
reports of a magician being arrested after being accused
of several counts of sexually assaulting students in magic
classes. The Q&A has important information for anyone
who works with children in their communities.
National SAM President Ron Ishimaru shares a self-assessment
worksheet in his "From the President's Desk" column,
and recommends that you fill out your own assessment with
your favorite trick or illusion. Ron offers two of his favorite
self-assessment results, the Ring on a Spring, and the Guess
the Number in a Covered Cube, both of which he has used
for many years.
SAM Dean George Schindler writes about Many Voices in the
pages of this month's "The Dean's Diary." You
will identify with many of the examples George puts forth.
He mentions examples of Tenyo tricks, smart phones, and
wonders if laymen view them as just novelties. He refers
you to Bruce Kalver's column, "Tech Tricks" for
some of the technical tricks. He suggests having fun with
the gadgets and novelties, and then getting back to being
magicians.
Bruce Kalver's "Tech Tricks" column does, indeed,
include a Talking Card Box routine mentioned by Dean George
Schindler in his column, along with two other tech tricks
that Bruce thinks may be of interest to other "techies."
Paul Draper writes about The Mentalist As Emcee in his "On
Second Thought
" column, and explains why most
mentalists are masters of the spoken word, making them ideal
candidates for the emcee role. While his column focuses
on mentalists and Paul's personal experiences, the information
here should be eagerly absorbed by all potential emcees.
"Nervous? Who, me?" Stage fright. That's the focus
of "Taking the Stage" column by Brian T. Lees.
No less a professional than Red Skelton said that everyone
gets butterflies before they walk onstage. He suggested
that those who say they don't are not telling the truth.
And it's just not performers who get nervous, it's your
volunteers too. Brian covers both this month.
"No Smoke, No Mirrors" columnist David Corsaro
interviews Michael Kent about pre-show promotion and self-promotion
for college or public shows. Their Q&A covers posters,
promotional "teaser" performances, getting booked
on local news shows, and social media examples. There's
valuable information here.
M-U-M's closest-to-the-Equator columnist, Kien Meng Wee
in Singapore, a.k.a. Mr. Bottle, writes about the creative
process and theming a show in "Magic in a Bottle."
Obviously, Steve Axtell's wonderful Magic Drawing Board
has made its way around the world and into the shows of
many, and Mr. Bottle offers some ideas for its use beyond
its basic presentation.
The always anticipated and well-read "Shop Talk"
column reviews two books, five tricks, three DVDs, and two
miscellaneous items this month by six knowledgeable reviewers
who give you their best pros-and-cons opinions. This is
no-nonsense, you-could-find-a-gem-here material.
David Goodsell's "The S.A.M. History Project"
column introduces us to Walter Truman Best, better known
as Edward Maro who traveled as "Maro, Prince of Magicians."
Don't know that name either? That's okay; this is a history
column. He was the first magician to travel a Lyceum circuit.
There's more about him in David's column.
In Norman Beck's life, he encounters a lot of interesting,
fascinating, and sometimes forgettable people, many of whom
find their way into his "Thoughts on Thinking"
column. This month's "educated idiot" is a highly
paid professional public speaker who Norman identifies only
as "AW." You'll enjoy reading their exchange of
emails and what Norman took away from that.
Of course there's much more. Editor Alan Howard's "Preshow"
column, "Correspondence," "Good Cheer"
and "Broken Wands," "SAM News," including
22 pages of "Assembly Reports," a report of "SAM
Assembly #89 performed for US Military Veterans in Hawaii,"
and an update of "Magic Week 2018." Then there's
"Diversions" with puzzles, IQ tests, and the Basil
the Baffling & Chloe cartoon. Our advertisers would
enjoy knowing that you saw their advertisement in M-U-M.

Richard
Hatch Part Two - The Plains Magicians on The Magic Word
Podcast
We
complete our two part conversation this week with bibliophile,
Richard Hatch, who talks about some of the magicians and
entertainers who passed through the Plains States such as
Utah. Dick lives near Salt Lake City, Utah and has been
doing extensive research on these entertainers such as Artemus
Ward, contemporary of Mark Twain and known as Abraham Lincoln's
favorite humorist (comedian). He focuses on Washington Simmons
who befriended Brigham Young (head of the Mormon faith)
and was quite well known as a Plains Magician in the 1800's.
You
can watch a video clip of Richard Hatch, see some photos
of those who are mentioned in this podcast (including a
picture of the fabled boots owned by Brigham Young), listen
online to the podcast, and download the MP3 file at: https://www.themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/477-richard-hatch-part-two

6. Open All Day - John Carey #33
--------------------------------------------
Message by John Carey (UK)
https://carey-scene.com/jc-main
In
John Bannon's latest book Destination Zero is a beautiful
hands off card at a number presentation called The ThirtySecond
Sense. I loved the effect but wanted an approach where my
spectator didn't have too much procedure to carry out or
remember. Luckily, Gene Finnell's wonderful free-cut principle
achieves this objective in a very expedient fashion.
Requirements:
A 51 card deck and a small change purse contains mixed coinage
total ing 34 pence or 34 of whatever currency you use.
Bring
out the purse and casually table it. State that you will
get a few people involved in the proceedings. Hand out three
packets of cards, each containing seventeen cards to three
spectators. The Elmsley technique of pushing off and silently
counting in groups of three is the most efficient way of
doing this. Request the cards to be well mixed and have
each packet tabled, forming a row of three packets.
Ask
one of the group to pick up any packet and lift away a portion,
look at the face card, say 5 of Clubs and drop that packet
on top of either of the two tabled packets. Get them to
drop the other tabled packet on top. Finally have them mix
the remaining cards they are holding and drop them on top
of everything and square up. Walk and talk them through
the Jay Ose false cut from Lorayne's Close Up Card magic
and you are in a very strong position. Their thought of
card is automatically thirty-fourth from the top, thanks
to the ingenious free-cut principle.
Mention
you will make a wager with your helper. Pick up the change
purse and open it. Take out all of the coins except for
a 5 pence piece and toss them to the table. Close the purse
and throw aside, as if unimportant.
Have
your spectator pick up the deck in readiness for dealing.
Pick up one of the
tabled
coins and call out its value. Have your helper deal and
count that amount into a face-down pile. Repeat the above
sequence with each of the remaining coins, your helper dealing
on top of the previous cards, forming a packet of twenty-nine
cards. Act confidently and ask them to turn over the top
card of the tabled packet. It will not be their mental selection...
Look
crestfallen as if the whole thing has gone wrong and say
to the spectator that he wins the money and the purse! This
should get a laugh. Pick up the purse and open it. Then
act surprised and 'notice' there is a coin left inside,
a 5 pence piece. Show this situation and remove the coin.
"My bad, please count 5 more cards." He does and
calls out the name of his thought of card. The last card
dealt is turned over to reveal his card and everybody goes
home happy.
Kudos to Mr Bannon and Finnell.

8. News From Germany

Message by Wittus Witt (Germany)
Some
German magicians are touring the country this year
In
June the Ehrlich Brothers will present their spectacular
show in Düsseldorf in a huge stadium with a capacity
of 38.504 seats to break their own record from 2016.
Since
Copperfield there has been no other magician who performs
in such large venues.
Florian
Zimmer is quite well known amongst magicians but not to
the general public. However he will also go on tour this
year to show his illusions in large halls with 2000 and
more seats.
Better
known to the public is FISM winner Nicolai Friedrich (the
creator of Mona Lisa trick) who is still on tour with his
show. He goes to theatres with about 1000 seats.
Also
quite well known is Helge Thun (leader of "Flicking
Fingers"). Since last year he has a brand new show
which he performs only in small theatres.
Not
to forget several close-up theatres which play regularly
every week: "Krist" in Munich (https://www.magic-theater.de/),
"Strotmann'a" in Stuttgart (https://www.strotmanns.com/),
"Stefan Kirschbaum" in Nuremberg (https://www.wundermanufaktur.de/),
and myself in Hamburg (http://www.galerie-we.de/Zauber-Salon.html).

Bradford
magician Dynamo raises awareness of Crohn's disease
BRADFORD
magician Dynamo has hit out after a national newspaper described
him as "fighting fit", saying "the way someone
looks isn't necessarily an indicator of health".
Dynamo
- whose real name is Steven Frayne and hails from Delph
Hill - was diagnosed with Crohn's Disease almost 20 years
ago.
Last
March, he shared a video explaining his health problems
brought on by a bout of food poisoning, which led to him
gaining weight.
Today,
a national newspaper shared paparazzi photos of Dynamo walking
his dog, exclaiming he was looking "fighting fit as
he continues to battle with Crohn's disease".
It
said he "looked slim and healthy after gaining weight
due to the illness" and "appears to be winning
the fight" against Crohn's
Responding
to the article, Dynamo tweeted: "Hey @MetroUK, I'm
doing better thanks, but as any Crohns/RA sufferer will
you tell you, the way someone looks isn't necessarily a
great indicator of health.
