2. Shin Lim Wins America's Got Talent: The Champions
--------------------------------------------
The Straits Times

Los Angeles - Magician Shin Lim has played the right cards yet again, casting a spell on Monday (Feb 18) to be crowned winner of the inaugural America's Got Talent: The Champions contest.

The 27-year-old, who was born in Canada and raised in Singapore before his parents relocated to the United States, beat 11 contenders from similar talent contests worldwide, including British singer Susan Boyle.

"It's crazy, to be honest. I still have to pinch myself. First winning AGT was crazy to me, but winning Champions was even more crazy. It's very overwhelming and super exciting," People magazine quoted Lim, who picked up US$25,000 (S$33,900), as saying.

"I don't think I can call myself the champion of champions because I don't really believe it. I mean, (contender) Deadly Games is throwing knives and I'm just doing card tricks."

Not all netizens were pleased that Lim, winner of season 13 of America's Got Talent in September last year and who once again showcased his card tricks, edged out favourite Boyle - who did not even make the top five.

But Boyle, 57, took the loss in her stride.

"Of course, I'd be lying if I said I wasn't disappointed, but also deep down, I didn't think I would win. Secretly, you hold out hope that you just might because that's what drives you to do your best in a competition," she told People.

"I've never really considered myself a champion, I'm just me, Susan Boyle."

Meanwhile, Lim has another card up his sleeve to please his fans - an invitation card to his wedding in August to dancer Casey Thomas in Hawaii.

3. March Issue Of Genii Is All About Guy Hollingworth
---------------------------------------
Join us at www.geniimagazine.com

I remember meeting Guy Hollingworth many decades ago and thinking, "Yikes, he's really good." Now I would say he is one of the best cardmen in the world. And if you were to take a measure of the classiest magician in the world, he would probably top the list. He performs pretty much only his own material, which is a great accomplishment. Even more so when one contemplates the difficultly level of the tricks. He seems to have done, and be able to do, virtually everything better than almost everyone else. I spent a few days in London last year interviewing Guy, and Dustin Stinett has turned it all into a wonderful article in our March issue.

We have an outstanding array of columnists this month, each bringing you their very best. Let me start with Al Schneider's routine "4fx," which uses four paper balls, in his column "Broadcast from Nowhere." Do not make the mistake of passing this by. I strongly urge you to watch the video in our digital edition before reading the secret.

* We have another new routine from Harry Lorayne, the second we've run in as many months. Card magic at its best, and exclusively in Genii.

* Andi Gladwin gives you lots of good reasons not to quit your day job in "Going Pro." * If you like to call the poker hands dealt from a shuffled deck, then you'll like John Bannon's installment of "Dealing with It" this month.

* Hannibal gives the word "peril" new meaning in "Happiness is the Road."

* In "Classic Correspondence" Mike Caveney shares another letter this time from Gustave Fasola to Howard Thurston.

* We run the final installment of Bob Read's wonderful "Hidden Treasures" this month. Bob died over a decade ago, but his personality and love for the obscure and a good pun has lived on in his Genii column. It has been my pleasure to run them.

* Jonathan Friedman turns in his second "Magicana" and by Jove there are more great tricks!

* Slant by Mr. Racherbaumer and reviews of books, tricks, and videos by Francis Menotti, Danny Orleans, and Nathan Coe Marsh round out the issue.

4. Ellen Amazed By AGT: The Champions Shin Lim
-------------------------------------------------

Shin Lim recently won "America's Got Talent: The Champions," and now he's back on Ellen to prove why he beat all the other "Got Talent" winners with an astonishing card trick.

5. The Magic Word Podcast

Richard Hatch - Searching for Erdnase

One of the country's most well-known magic booksellers is also a learned scholar and researcher on solving the mystery of who was the real author of "Expert At The Card Table". Richard Hatch (the "H" in "H&R Magic Books") has been trying to find the real name of the author of what may well be the seminal treatise on card magic. Richard is well positioned to help solve this mystery because of his background in reading and researching hundreds of tomes of our arcane art.

In this week's podcast, Richard talks about the formation of H&R Magic Books, plus some of the books he has authored himself (like the one on Hofzinser) and worked on with others plus some of his friends along the way such as Walter Graham, Martin Gardner, and Karl Fulves. But towards the middle of our conversation, we get into his research into finding out who he thinks was the real person behind the book that inspired Dai Vernon and generations of other card men.

This week's podcast is the first of a two-part conversation which concludes next week. But this week you can watch a video of Richard and what he is doing now with his "Hatch Academy", see some photos, read the blog, get some links, listen to the podcast online and download the MP3 file at: https://www.themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/476-richard-hatch-part-one

And don't forget to sign up for our weekly newsletter telling you who is on this week, what's coming next week, plus a suggestion from the archives.

6. Open All Day! - John Carey #32
--------------------------------------------
Message by John Carey (UK)
https://carey-scene.com/jc-main

The open prediction is a truly fascinating card problem. The following hands off self-working version does not adhere to the stringent conditions of Paul Curry's original problem posed but the tradeoff is pretty strong in my opinion.

Hand out the deck for shuffling and upon return spread through the deck and take out the Jokers and set them aside. Use this time-honoured ruse to secretly note the card sixth from the top. Let's say for the purposes of this description it is the King of Clubs. Casually false cut the deck.
Hand the spectator the deck and state you will make an open prediction. Call out the King of Clubs. Ask them to deal a card face-up to the table, followed by another then one more. Have them deal two more and then casually get them to deal the next card (KC) face-down for 'luck'.

Request they continue dealing faceup onto the tabled pile and deal another card face-down on impulse. Once again get them to continue dealing face-up cards and deal another face-down card. Have them repeat this one more time, so that four face-down cards have been dealt. Ask your spectator to turn their remaining cards face-up and drop them on top of everything.

Time misdirection will now be your friend. Comment on how you made an open prediction at the beginning and that they shuffled the deck. They dealt cards faceup and at four different points they randomly dealt face-down cards. Most of that is true! Be bold ;-)

Spread the face-up deck and slide out the four face-down cards. Table them and mix them around, tracking where your target card is. Now use a simple, standard equivoque or magician's choice to force the target card, the King of Clubs. I simply ask them to push two cards towards me. If both are x cards, I place them aside and ask them to hand me one of the remaining two cards. If that's an x card I discard it casually with the others and bring the trick home. However, if they push the target card and an x card towards you, discard the other two cards and have them hand you one of their two choices. If it's an x card then casually discard that. But of course, if it's the target card, you push the remaining card aside without fuss and not mentioning the dreaded death words eliminate or get rid off!

Either which way, you remind the audience of your open prediction and successfully conclude the mystery.

10. Broken Wand John Bohannon

Message by George Schindler

John Bohannon dies at age 82

Broadcaster and Magician John Bohannon died on January 8 of ALS at age, 82 at his home in Wantagh NY. John was a past President of PA#1 twice in 1979 and 1994, and was their 1998 "Magician of the Year". As a Houdini historian, he served for many years as chairman of the Houdini Gravesite committee. He authored two books; "Kickers" a nonfiction comedy about his broadcasts and "Abracadabra You're Dead" a mystery story.

Bohannon began his long radio career in Tampa Fla in 1955 and although he disliked country music hosted the "Hillbilly Hit Parade", and did a five-minute Sunday newscast. In 1956 he moved to WDAE a Tampa CBS outlet where he did Weather and newscasts. He came to New York as a deejay at WBAB in Babylon in 1959 and was hired as a news anchor in 1967 at ABC where he covered such news as the Apollo disaster in 1970. In 1972 he moved to NBC until 1977 and then spent the next five years at C BS where he covered the murder of John Lennon in 1980 among other news stories. John Bohannon retired (???) in 2004 from WLIW21 in Plainview NY but took on the "Jazz Cafe" deejay show at Hofstra's WRHU just to keep busy. He tapped his vast collection of over 2000 CD 's for this labor of love, staying with this show for the past 15 years.

Bohannon could always be counted on to emcee and appear in numerous after-meeting show for the IBM and S.A.M in New York with his dry, offbeat humor.
