2. FISM 2021 In Québec City Canada
---------------------------------------
Message by Renee-Claude Auclair (Canada)

I would like to let you know that the 9th Edition of the Festival de magie de Québec and the 7th Edition of the Concours international de magie " Michel Cailloux " will take place from May 2nd to 5th, 2019 in Québec City, Canada. Our 2018 champion, Nikolai Striebel, from Germany will be back with us to perform with the new champion.

It is interesting to know that we will have an international level jury in Québec for the contest so this will be a great opportunity for the competitors to get comments about their acts. Also we will give a total of $3500 Canadian dollars to the winners.

For the Festival, we will welcome great magicians from 8 different countries. They will be performing on stage for the public and for the magicians. They will also share lectures all week-end long with the magicians attending.

So we invite you to register and visit us from May 2nd to 5th, 2019, in Québec City.

For more information about our artists and contest: https://www.festivaldemagie.ca

Finally we would like to say that the registrations for FISM 2021 in Québec City are coming in on a regular basis. We will publish information about the hotels by the end of February, on our website, so keep in touch by registering to our newsletter at www.fismquebec2021.com

3. MAGIC Live 2019
-------------------------------------------------
Message by Stan Allen (US)

With 80% of the spots already gone, MAGIC Live 2019 is on track to sell out for the fifth year in a row. So once again, the place to be this August 4-7 is Las Vegas!

There's still time to reserve your place, using one of our convenient payment methods:

1. You can either make the full payment of $445 and be all set, or

2. You can enroll in our easy payment plan: $165 deposit by February 1st, then four monthly payments of $70 (plus $2 processing fee).

By the way, MAGIC Live offers a lot more (and a little less):

More Talent - Well over 50 performers and presenters are booked each year at MAGIC Live, which means you'll see more talent (twice as much) than at other conventions!

More Theaters - We build custom venues for our close-up, parlor, and specialty shows, which means you see more of the convention live, rather than on a video screen in one big room!

More Vendors - The largest dealer room in North America (close to 60 vendors), which means more shopping opportunities for all of us!

More Magicians - Besides yourself, there are 1,599 other attendees at MAGIC Live, which means you'll see more magicians you know and more magicians you want to meet!

Less Expensive - Even though our registration rate is a little higher, our room rate at The Orleans is a lot less! When you combine registration and hotel, MAGIC Live is one of the best convention bargains of 2019.

Hope you can join us. Surprises await!

4. S.A.M. Preview of February 2019 M-U-M

Message by Lindsay Smith (US)

"Mario Marchese: Magic's Punk Rock Peter Pan Philosopher" by Chloe Olewitz is February's cover feature. Covering his life, magic performances, meeting fellow adventurer Katie Rosa, and Arduino (which you'll learn about) is a lot to fit into just eight pages, but this article is a great start.

"The Torn & Restored Streamer" by Mario "The Maker Magician" Marchese follows with a unique torn & restored effect explained and illustrated with 19 (count 'em) photos to make everything clear.

Of course you know the name Mandrake but, no, this is not the Mandrake you're thinking of. And no, it's not that one, either! This is "Narda Mandrake: Dancer, Assistant, and Magician," written by yet another Mandrake, Lon. Yes, Narda and Leon Mandrake began performing together and married in 1940. You'll enjoy reading about their performances and life together by Lon Mandrake, the son of Leon, a.k.a. Mandrake the Magician.

SAM's National President Ron Ishimaru devotes the majority of his "From the President's Desk" column to recognizing a number of SAM members who are significantly involved in the Society of Young Magicians organization, the SYM. These young magicians are the up-and-coming lifeblood of our organization and these dedicated members are moving that objective forward. Ron also highlights Brian South and Michael Rosander who were presented the Presidential Citation at the Discover Magic DMC2019 "Fun DUH Mentals" gathering in Las Vegas in November 2018.

Our Dean George Schindler continues his remembrances of Frank Garcia over the years in "Remembering Garcia 2" in "The Dean's Diary." The article begins with Frank's athleticism in high school and his dreams and becoming a prize fighter, and concludes with their publishing partnership, Million Dollar Productions, and coauthoring numerous magic books.

Just when you think you've experienced every possible mishap in your show, "Illusions of Grandeur" columnist David Seebach assures you that you probably haven't, based on two experiences that happened to him since he wrote his last column. These will get your attention. In the second half of his column, he writes about two well-known illusions: the Mysterious Duck Production prop, and Where Do the Ducks Go?

In Brian Lees' column, "Taking the Stage," he suggests that music is an element that can take a magician's performance to the next level. Brian explains that magicians use music in two postures - the first as background, the second is to choreograph magic. His examples for both are worth your attention.

Paul Draper addresses the pros and cons of "Strolling Mentalism" and the challenges of various strolling venues in his "On Second Thought…" column. Says Paul, "Strolling is a fantastic up-sell when added to any stage show you have already booked." Dozens of examples abound when you're considering a strolling gig.

Kien Meng Wee, also known as Mr. Bottle, suggests differentiating yourself from the competition by theming your show from magic to, perhaps, a Superhero or Magical Princess show. His contributor to this month's "Magic in a Bottle" column is Patrick Wan who shares his presentation of the Superhero Levitation.

"No Smoke, No Mirrors" columnist David Corsaro continues his real world marketing advice for magicians, this month emphasizing setting realistic and measurable goals, and avoiding those "marketing experts" who sell marketing courses that have potentially unrealistic promises. How will you define success?

Cinde and Dal Sanders open their "TV or Not TV" column with a back-and-forth dialogue about being always on. From there, Dal takes over and explains what happened recently and why. Call it being "always on," or being "camera ready," or "being a magician 24/7." He promises to always be ready in the future. And you?

"Tech Tricks" columnist and SAM's tech wizard Bruce Kalver recommends two more wonderful magic apps that are available in Magic Tricks by Mikael Montier. Need an opener for your strolling gigs? Bruce's third recommendation is The Momentum Tie that glows or pulses and absolutely begs people to start up a conversation with you.

Books, tricks, DVDs, and Miscellaneous effects all receive well-considered reviews from well-posted magicians in "Shop Talk," a monthly go-to feature that looks at what's new on the shelves. The evaluations range from "this could go into your show," or maybe "this is for you" or maybe not," or "maybe you should think twice about ordering."

If you have read Norman Beck's columns over the years, you should know by now that you should never place a bet, wager, or gamble with him. You will lose. In this month's "Thoughts on Thinking," he provides an excellent example using a simple coin flip. This happened in Las Vegas. Norman calls it a business transaction. You can call it what you will.

In addition to these regular features and columnists, there are a dozen-plus pages of "Assembly Reports," and membership information, "Broken Wands," and under "Diversions," another "Magic IQ Quiz" from PNP Dick Bowman, "MagicWORDDoodles," "1-2-3-Go," and "Basil the Baffling and Chloe" by Alan Wassilak. As always, our advertisers would enjoy knowing that you saw their ad in M-U-M.

6. Magic Festival In Holland
--------------------------------------------
Message by C Ros (Holland)

English spoken Magic Festival in Holland with new concept

In Holland a team of enthusiastic young magicians is organizing the Dutch Festival of Magic 2019. This team has been experimenting with the concept of conventions over the last couple of years. Talking about a medical convention where you expect doctors and nurses a magic convention seems to be oriented more towards magicians than towards the general public.

However, magicians exist thanks to the public. The Dutch decided not only to change the name convention into festival, which sounds much more inviting to the public, but also tried to find elements that are appealing to the younger magic generation, that is used to the speed of internet and social media. Although most of the usual modules of any convention are still part of the festival, the Dutch introduced what they call MagicTED, short presentations by different magicians each presenting a subject of maximum 13 minutes.

The general public can still come and watch an evening gala, this year with international stars like former world champions Scott & Muriel, Alana and many others, but a very new element is the International Hans Klok Trophy (HKTC) Competition for Young Magicians (under 19). The competition is named after the famous Dutch illusionist, who is this year starting with his own show in Las Vegas.

After two trials of this HKTC in 2017 and 2018, where Hannah from Japan won the first trophy and Luna from S-Korea the second, this year's HKTC is going to be really big. The beautiful fairy tale like venue De Reehorst in the town of Ede is the place to be from 30 May - 1 June 2019. The jury for the HKTC will consist of well-known people like Boris Wild (France), Andrea Baioni (Italy) and Vadim Savenkov (Russia).

Also interesting is the working language. Where most countries organize a convention or festival in their native tongue, in Holland the working language is English, opening up the festival for the whole world.
The festival also includes 'The Dutch Open', allowing magicians from any part of the world to participate in the national OPEN championships and try and win the Festival Grand Prix.

For all information about this unique Dutch Festival of Magic and the Hand Klok Trophy Competition go to www.dutchfestivalofmagic.nl. Contestants for the 'Dutch Open' and the HKTC are to apply before 1st April 2019.

7. Lies Damn Lies! - John Carey #28
--------------------------------------------
Message by John Carey (UK)
https://carey-scene.com/jc-main

The lie detector plot is deservedly considered a classic of close up card magic, and there are some truly superb versions in print. What makes the effect so strong are the choices the spectator gets to make and the ensuing entertainment value the effect can generate.

What I offer here makes an ideal opener. It makes wonderful use of what's become known as the Matsuyama Petal force, which with playing cards is a way of forcing one of two words. My friend John Bannon uses it in an effect called Petal to the Metal in his book Destination Zero. The actual force was published with applications by Steve Beam in Semi Automatic card tricks, volume 4.

Set the Jack of Clubs, Hearts and Spades at positions 1,6 and 11 from the top of the deck. Place the Jack of Diamonds on the face of the deck and you are good to go.

"I'm sure most of you here have heard all about the polygraph machine or lie detector. It's used by law enforcement agencies around the world to determine whether a suspect is lying or telling the truth. It's a highly sophisticated, very expensive piece of equipment. But: did you know that a deck of cards can be used as a lie detector? Much less expensive, can be carried in your pocket and usually gives remarkably good results. Let's put it to the test with you today Raj!"

Remove the deck and false shuffle retaining your set up. Push off a packet of five cards from the top and table them. Then push off five more and table them to the right of the first packet. Finally push off another five cards and table them furthest to the right of the row, forming three packets, each with a Jack on top.

This is done as you make your opening commentary.
Swing cut a few small packets into your left hand, leaving about a dozen cards in your right hand. Place this packet (with the Jack of Diamonds on the bottom) on top of the packet in your left hand, securing a little-finger break beneath it. Execute a dribble force to your break as you say you want Raj to put the thought of a card in his mind. Raise the upper packet and show him the force card.

Assemble the deck, keeping a little-finger break beneath the selection. Pause a beat as you ask him to lock the image of that card in his mind, then casually double undercut the forced selection to the bottom and execute a slip shuffle retaining it there.

Table the deck and ask your helper to cut off a fair sized packet. You then pick up the remainder and place them on top, but offset at an angle, setting up Max Holden's classic cross-cut card force.

"So, Raj, you are thinking of a card. These three small packets of cards on the table are our lie detector. I will simply ask you three questions and you may lie or tell the truth."

Ask the spectator if his card is red or black? Whatever his answer, pick up the packet on the left in readiness for the Matsuyama Petal force: Deal the top card to the table as you say "black" (opposite colour of force card) and then place the next card underneath the packet as you call out "red". Repeat this deal and duck procedure with the remaining cards of the packet as you call out black, red, black, red and drop the final card on top.

The last colour you call will, by nature of the maths of the deal, be the colour of their card (in this case red). Explain that this technique shows the true colour and, depending on his answer, comment on how the lie detector tells us he is either lying or telling the truth.

Pick up the next packet of the row and repeat exactly the above process after asking him whether he is thinking of a Heart or a Diamond? Be sure to call out the opposite suit to the Diamond as you deal the first card and continue the duck and Deal. Have some fun with the results here.

Pick up the remaining packet and ask your helper whether he is thinking of a number card or a picture card? He can again be truthful or Lie. Carry out the petal force as before, dealing the top card to the table as you call out number, then ducking the next card underneath as you call out picture. Continue and drop the last card on top, successfully forcing the word picture.

"Well we've had some fun there with your answers, Raj! You were truthful only once but the lie detector found you out. For the first time, tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth! What card are you thinking of?"

After he says Jack of Diamonds, slowly reach over to the remainder of the deck and slowly lift off the upper offset packet from above with the right hand. Slide out the bottom card and place it on his hand. A moment later have him turn it over to reveal his 'thought of card'.

To finish the piece, slowly turn over the three 'lie detector' packets to disclose the other Jacks and bring the trick home.
